I think Ancient Bath is my favorite. I love the colors and lines in this image.
At first I thought it’s the semicircular arches and circular decorations are
the ones doing it to me, but it’s the combination of those circular lines and
the straight horizontal lines. So beautiful and so silent, it does give the
feeling of antiquity.

I am not sure if Flour Mill screams “ancient” to me but I really like the
image. Same with The Last Plough.

Norfolk Island Cemetery just pushes my travel buttons left and right.

Thank you, what a lovely gallery.

RE: April PUG is up

2020-04-05 Thread jcoyle
Thanks Bob - Paestum impressed us more than Herculaneum, maybe because both
Pompeii and Herculaneum are familiar through the many TV programs on them.
Paestum however, is not as crowded, is remote - you must walk for a mile along
a country lane to reach the site - unfamiliar, has one of the best preserved
Greek temples in Italy, and also one of the finest small museums I have ever
visited. Well worth the 30-minute train ride from Salerno, or an hour from
Naples.

Yes I think the diver is very interesting. I’ve never seen it before and at
first it made me think of the bull leapers of Knossos, until i read the
caption. I’d love to visit Paestum some time - Sir John Soane made some very
interesting drawings there, which are now on show in his museum here in
Londinium.

Thanks Dan - when I first saw this fresco, in situ, I was blown away by the
sheer elegance of the design, and the simplicity of form. Jan and I both
stood there much longer than we would have thought, looking at the other

sociable man!

My favorite is John Coyle's "Diver." It certainly qualifies as "ancient,"
and the fresco itself is interesting and beautiful, while John does an
excellent job of capturing the scene. Henk's "Flour Mill" is not that
ancient, but he creates a very pleasing scene.

Re: OT: Coronavirus: Sophie Raworth's deserted London - BBC News

2020-04-05 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
I've had some bicycle parts on order from a supplier in China (carbon rims for
the new bike) since before COVID-19 became the only thing anyone discusses.
They're finally in the USA now. My friend there told me that their usual
premium shipping service was being restricted from any deliveries to the USA;
the only way they could ship was via DHL or FedEx out of Hong Kong, and even
that required both a double shunt there from the factory and then a wait for a
flight to be shipped on because *all* commercial cargo transports are down
85-90% at the present time.

Quite a different world since three-four short weeks ago!

No ride here for the past two days, and today, because of the on again/off
again weather, but I did get out for walks on both days (and will again today).
Everyone's expecting the big bump in the plague infections/deaths this week:
streets are becoming pretty deserted even for walks.

I did take the Leica with the 10mm lens on it out with me yesterday. I've got a
few exposures that I may post.

Yes I think the diver is very interesting. I’ve never seen it before and at
first it made me think of the bull leapers of Knossos, until i read the
caption. I’d love to visit Paestum some time - Sir John Soane made some very
interesting drawings there, which are now on show in his museum here in
Londinium.

My favorite is John Coyle's "Diver." It certainly qualifies as "ancient,"
and the fresco itself is interesting and beautiful, while John does an
excellent job of capturing the scene. Henk's "Flour Mill" is not that
ancient, but he creates a very pleasing scene.

Both are from the Jurassic geo period  -
Mine: the Entrada Sandstone is between 200 and 500 feet thick and hosts
to the largest concentration of natural stone arches in the world.
The Entrada Sandstone was deposited approximately 160 million years ago.
MIddle Jurassic.

but I like the figuratively ancient stuff some of you guys chose.

I settled for the Entrada because the photo had been scanned and it is
one of my favorite places. I have a couple of trilobites but they are

Re: Photoshop problems

2020-04-05 Thread Bruce Walker
Hey, John; glad to hear you are making progress.

The GPU is used for a whole bunch of large and small things.
Particularly for me the GPU is used to render the brush tool cursor
when I choose Full Size Brush Tip and Show Crosshair in Brush Tip. I
use this for more accurate dodging and burning (skin retouching).
It's also used for smooth scrolling around the image when magnified.

If GPU disabled is no different for you from enabling GPU options then
I expect that your graphics card isn't well supported and you'd be
better off just disabling it. Your unusual VGA hookup could be
affecting this. GPUs may need a reasonably modern monitor with a
direct HDMI or USB-3 (USB-C) connection for proper functioning.

Cheers!

By the time the dust settled it was probably about that long. But it wasn’t a
case of adding 3.5 hours to a 2 hour drive, it was taking the 3.5 hour route
home and spending a couple hours taking photos on the way.

It wasn’t so much a joyride, I needed to make the drive out for work, and I
just took a more scenic route home.

If you look on the map this route actually looks a lot more direct than going
North on 99, and South on 5 to cut across on 205.

Thanks, Larry. Nice to see what other parts of the world look like. So
the return trip took 5.5 hrs? We can only go out for essential stuff -
no joyriding.

after getting an awesome (take out) burger, I was facing a two hour drive home.
Fortunately I knew a shortcut over Mount Hamilton, which if I didn’t stop,
would only take about 3.5 hours.

I crested the summit just before sunset, and spent another big chunk of time
photographing in that area as well.

RE: Photoshop problems

2020-04-05 Thread jcoyle
Finished testing the GPU options. Went through each with sample files of
the same size (9 MB), using no GPU acceleration and then Basic, Normal and
Advanced settings, and had no problems with the Basic and Normal settings:
however, on switching to Advanced, the problem recurred. I found it
interesting that turning GPU acceleration off did not appear to greatly
effect the normal speed of redrawing the image after changes such as
cropping and resizing. So I wonder whether there is any advantage to using
it of which I am not aware? Just to add a complication, I am displaying my
work on an external monitor linked via the VGA socket through a VGA to HDMI
converter to an HDMI input!

Thanks again, Bruce.

John, a few things to consider:

Since changing the app is easier than Windows, have you tried downgrading to
an earlier version of Photoshop?
Try adding more scratch space. You can configure multiple drives to supply
Ps swap.
Try playing with the GPU acceleration options. I'd first try disabling it
completely to see the effects.

BTW, it's working fine for me on a 5K iMac. Ps version 21.0.3.

Good luck!

An interesting PUG but most are old, not really ancient. My Fav is
Rick's Pompeiian Crosswalk. I wonder if NYC ever had anything like that?

RE: Photoshop problems

2020-04-05 Thread jcoyle
Hi Bruce - thanks for the suggestions: I'm using just over 9GB of scratch
space on a separate drive, which is in the mid-range of what PS is
recommending. I'm going to switch through the GPU options to see what
effect each has, starting with it disabled.
