Re: PESO: Rediscovering the K-7

2020-12-03 Thread Alan C
I used a K7 (ex Mark Cassino) for 5 years until I upgraded to his K5.
The K7 sensor is poor in low light & noisy above ISO400 but I found that
used within its limitations it could give excellent results. TAV mode
was useless with the ISO difficulty. The K5 solved that problem & so far
I am very happy with its performance. I may yet upgrade to a K3 if I can
find one at a bargain basement price.

Yet, when I look at some of the photos I've taken with it, they have a
special quality about them. A certain crispness, the restrained
colours...

Maybe the fact that I was less lazy, in those days, and made much more
use of primes, tripods, and low ISOs also has something to do with it.

Just came across this one and thought some of you might like it:

Re: Enablement!

2020-12-03 Thread P. J. Alling
I did a little research before buying and Sigma seems to have made a
number of similar lenses.  It looks like at least two slightly different
variable aperture versions from f4.0~5.6, though the only real
information available is on the latest one with the HSM focus motor, and
the f3.5 constant aperture version that I picked up.

It seems to be the best optically based on the reviews I've read, and
based on the pluses and minuses, probably better than the other 3rd
party variable aperture APS-c ultra wide zooms in the range from 10mm to
2Xmm, maybe even better than the low end Nikon and Canon offerings.

So far I haven't shot anything except stupid tests.

I went out for a Drive to scenic Stonington CT., but didn't see anything
I wanted to get out of the car for, I can't say it's real cold here, but
it isn't exactly warm either...

It was part of a deal where I got the 10-20mm, a 35mm f/1.4 and the
"Bigma" all used for $1K.

It's a VERY wide angle of view at 10mm (110° IIRC).

Back to my original point.  I just received my "new", refurbished
actually, Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 from KEH.com along with a Pentax silver
(MZ/ZX), strap, with snap pockets, which are just the right size for
SD cards.  Both are now proudly on my K-3.  It's a late birthday
present early Christmas present to myself.

I'll post a mini review after I have a chance to play with it a bit.

However, my first impression is pretty favorable.  This lens is one
fat stubby little sucker.  The finish is typical Sigma, feels solid
in the hand, rubberized everywhere,  focus and zoom rings are well
damped, there are no hard stops on the focus ring.

Just off the bat, it would be nice if there was a mark on the zoom
ring where the lens is at it's minimum physical length since that's
somewhere between the 17mm and 14mm focal length marks.

I've fired a couple of shots using the K-3 just to see if everything
is working correctly and it seems to be.

So why didn't I get the Pentax DA* 11-18 f2.8 or Pentax DA 12-24
f4.0? Well price of  course in the case of the former.  The KEH.com
refurbished Sigma was Less than a quarter the cost. The 12-24 has now
become difficult to find, and the price for a "New" Sigma lens was
outstanding so  I have a new adventure.

I think mine's the same - about the size and weight of an aluminum baseball bat.

This on the "business" end:

Never want to use it that way, but I could if I had to.

That's another thing I hate about getting old, being afraid of strangers.

That thought has crossed my mind. Without the ballhead, and with all but the
smallest section extended it has similar size, weight, balance and handling to
a bokken, though I hesitate to consider how well the carbon fiber would hold
up to actually striking anything with it.

I've never had much luck with ball heads on a monopod. Just too wobbly. I like

Ball heads are great on a tripod, but I've just never gotten the hang of using

Re: PESO: Rediscovering the K-7

2020-12-03 Thread Bruce Walker
That's lovely light, Ralf. A fine shot.

The K-7 was the immediate successor to the K20D, with a very similar
(but updated) CMOS sensor. I was very fond of my K20D and shot with it
for a good seven years. I really loved the rather filmic look to the
images -- I don't have the same issue with grain/noise that gets other
photographers into a tizzy.

I sold it cheap last year to a young budding photography student and
it's still being lovingly used.

Re: Enablement!

2020-12-03 Thread John
I have that lens. I think I have that lens - there were two versions, an f/4 &
an f/3.5 - f/4, but I think they're both really f/4. I don't know which
"version" I have.

It was part of a deal where I got the 10-20mm, a 35mm f/1.4 and the "Bigma" all
used for $1K.

It's a VERY wide angle of view at 10mm (110° IIRC).

On 12/2/2020 17:37:42, P. J. Alling wrote:
Fun fact, Thunderbird wants to correct Enablement to Enfeeblement, could be more
right than I want to admit.

Back to my original point.  I just received my "new", refurbished actually,
Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 from KEH.com along with a Pentax silver (MZ/ZX), strap, with
snap pockets, which are just the right size for SD cards.  Both are now proudly
on my K-3.  It's a late birthday present early Christmas present to myself.

I'll post a mini review after I have a chance to play with it a bit.

However, my first impression is pretty favorable.  This lens is one fat stubby
little sucker.  The finish is typical Sigma, feels solid in the hand, rubberized
everywhere,  focus and zoom rings are well damped, there are no hard stops on
the focus ring.

Just off the bat, it would be nice if there was a mark on the zoom ring where
the lens is at it's minimum physical length since that's somewhere between the
17mm and 14mm focal length marks.

I've fired a couple of shots using the K-3 just to see if everything is working
correctly and it seems to be.

So why didn't I get the Pentax DA* 11-18 f2.8 or Pentax DA 12-24 f4.0? Well
price of  course in the case of the former.  The KEH.com refurbished Sigma was
Less than a quarter the cost.   The 12-24 has now become difficult to find, and
the price for a "New" Sigma lens was outstanding so  I have a new adventure.

PESO: Rediscovering the K-7

2020-12-03 Thread Ralf R Radermacher

The K-7 and I never really took to each other and I got myself one of

Maybe the fact that I was less lazy, in those days, and made much more

James Smith & Sons, the umbrella shop in Holborn, London, still show
swordsticks on their shopfront, although I think it’s highly unlikely that
they’d make or sell you one.

Unless you’re John Steed, of course.

Capt. Sir Richard Francis Burton, one of my great heroes of the Ripping Yarns
variety, was the finest swordsman in Europe, literally as well as
metaphorically, and always used a heavy metal walking stick to keep his sword
arm strong.

In the good old days you could have your walking stick made with kind of
knobbles or large knurls along the length so that if you were approached by a
ruffian, a member of the working classes or a foreigner it was a simple matter
to run the knobbly bits swiftly and forcefully across their shins or their
skull and they would think twice in future about breaking the social distancing
code.

Re: OT steak and potatoes

2020-12-03 Thread Bob Pdml
That’s very similar to pommes Macaire, which uses chives rather than onion, and
sometime a mashed baked potato (without the skin) rather than a boiled or
steamed potato.

Mashed potato with caramelised onions piled on top is classic, and of course if
you have boiled cabbage or similar greens lying around then bubble and squeak
must be on the menu.

Instagram is OK for showing pics to family and friends on their phones
without getting the junk messages of facebook.
Professional photographers tend to use instagram for promoting their

Flickr is still my preference as it doesn't limit the format/size of
your photos and the groups function gives you many possibilities to find
people with common interests of subjects.

For $66/y I've got there now 60 GB of photos (> 8 K) with unlimited storage.
