Re: catching up on a hot summer day (Where's Ann been?)

2022-08-09 Thread Bulent Celasun
Hello Ann,

I have been using the Internet only occasionally since May and I
dislike checking my emails on phone.

Anyway, I am really happy to read your complete 'story' .
It is good to know you are doing quite well after all those traumas.

Best wishes from this Covid-dodger to you - fingers crossed..
(And I hope these too hot days normalize soon).

Re: OT: (or not OT:) process vs. outcome

2021-03-28 Thread Bulent Celasun
Stan,

I think the two mindsets you described serve different purposes.
Even the same person can employ either depending on the occasion.
In a hurry? An average result is fine? The less precise, casual,
on-the-go approach would be fine.
Have time? Need some satisfaction? In a meditative mood? The latter,
more satisfying, enriching approach is appropriate.

Perhaps the essential requirement is the knowledge of the existence of
these separate pathways.
Personally, I would be very happy to reach an "outcome" like building
a box like Bill's.
Yet, I may still enjoy the "process" of trying to make a box like that
even when I fail.

Your bike looks very good as a whole, by the way, and I think it is
much lighter than mine.
Unfortunately, local driving habits does not permit much cycling here

Re: Unclogging printer head

2021-02-16 Thread Bulent Celasun
Mine had remained unused for about 4 years, maybe 5.
At least a year or 2 of it was in a box.
I was rather too busy with other matters and wasn't surprised when I
found it dead.

The inks were originals like the ones I still have sitting somewhere unopened.
I remember thinking about selling them as such but I doubt they will perform
as good as films past their BB date.

I used to have a lightly used Epson Stylus Photo R2880 Inkjet Printer
which was neglected for years
(totally unattended with the ink set mounted).
Tried everything I might and failed to make the head sing again.
I had to leave it on top of an electronic garbage pile.
Now I have a lower spec model (L805) and try to keep it happy by turning it on
(even when nothing is to be printed)
every now and then.

Alan,

The plant(s) are indeed less than half the height of the flower stems
(spikes) which grow very fast.
The spikes are always vertical, unlike the parts of the plant which
run diagonally.

Ours are like the one below, only lens of lesser density.

Re: PESO - Aloe vera (flower)

2021-01-24 Thread Bulent Celasun
Dan, Toine and Alan,

Thank you all for visiting and commenting.

Alan, the plant itself is a rather neglected one in a pot waiting to
be trimmed and
transplanted into garden soil about a month or two later.
Also, the flowers are on a stem which is far taller than the plant itself.
It might be unfair for her to be photographed in such a shape. : )

The truth is I might have considered some trick to get a shot, if it
wasn't 10 pm here.

For the inconsistent colors I thought the below link might help (see
iridescent colors).
I noticed a little bird (towards the end of your series) with cyan-ish
feathers and then I wondered
if the color had something to do with the angle of view.

Bipin,

Thank you for sharing your experience and advice.

My inks are declared to be pigment type and understand that
this might have something to do with my problem.

I think I will be looking for different papers first.
While refilling, I will certainly consider non-Epson ones as well.

OT - Printer ink fails to dry completely for a long time.

2020-11-21 Thread Bulent Celasun
I used to have an Epson Stylus Photo Inkjet Printer (Probably R2880)
which was using Ultrachrome K3 ink set. The print quality, even on
common garden papers, was above my expectations and I had no problems
ever when it was operational. Due entirely to my long neglect,
clogging problem killed that printer.

Now I have an Epson L805, a simpler and cheaper model with a cheaper
(read, lower quality) ink set (EcoTank).

I have quite a stock of inkjet printing paper (mostly Kodak, labelled
as premium, ultra etc). Unfortunately, my recent L805 ink set
(especially the dark tones) is notoriusly late to dry. A fairly dark
print takes more than a week to dry. Even then, if you put a glass on
top, there are little foci that stick (or, if you press some plain
paper on the image you still see a few ink droplets transferred to the
paper).

Original Epson inkjet papers are very expensive and practically
unavailable. There is only the A3 size (not suitable for my L805) and
it is sold for about 3 dollars each. I guess there should be no ink
drying problem if one can use those.

Now, here is my question:
Can I do anything "after printing to an ordinary inkjet photo paper"
to make it dry quicker AND completely without damaging the image?
Would sunlight or heat or wind or ... work?

By the way, the printer accepts a command to print on a no-name card
and uses somewhat less ink for that (on the premise that it may not
absorb the ink well). So, there is practically nothing I can do
"before" printing.

Comments and help appreciated.

Re: November PUG is up

2020-11-06 Thread Bulent Celasun
Thanks Brian, for making PUG possible.
Thanks also for including my photo.
My line of thought was exactly like yours.
I have Pentax cameras from 6x7 to 110 (seven, I guess).
And I have far too many lenses for each...
Unfortunately, they see little use these days...

...

Anyway, I enjoyed the gallery much and
my favorite "straight lines" are in
Mark Roberts' Walk and
Bruce Walker's Geometry 1.

I have been a keen user of LZ since its first days. I have learned photo

had to leave LZP due mostly to my software driver problems. I do not know

using Linux (also available for W. ). Learning İt takes time for sure. I
consider it time well spent. Bulent (on

Due in part to the moving target (in addition to other issues),
a precise comparison seems impossible.

Still, I found the "no teleconverter" images a bit more satisfactory.

Perhaps, that is a kind of contrast:

Re: Information to be announced on new Pentax APS-C flagship tomorrow

2020-05-14 Thread Bulent Celasun
Good to know.
DSLR does not seem to be dead, as yet.

I believe the K3 will likely remain my last DSLR (if it doesn't fail),
and Ricoh GRiii my last non-DSLR APSC camera for the foreseeable future.

Film cameras live much longer, by the way.

Thank you, Ann.

Happy to hear from you and knowing that you are fine.
We have been home for more than a month now and
I do not expect going out freely before June.

Photographically speaking,
I appreciate geraniums more than
apples,
kitchen utilities,
book shelves
and selfies.

Seriously speaking (finally),
limitations are expected to feed
creativity.
We'll see : ))

The outbreak has not (technically) started here, in Turkey, although

I guess it will be declared "started" within this week.

Re: Exposure techniques

2020-03-09 Thread Bulent Celasun
I am aware of the problem of red channel data clipping
even while the camera histogram looks fine.

All the digital cameras (non-DSLR Canons, Panasonics, Ricohs) I used
had this "feature".
It usually matters little IF the red (especially dark red) is the subject.
So while shooting a red-rich flower I always underexpose.
Trying to "expose to the right" never works for those.
The newer cameras (including my K3) are better in making files
which can be adjusted later with much less penalty of noise.

The same may apply to blue flowers as well but my experience with
dark/rich blue flowers are not much.

>Most of the time the dynamic range on the later sensors is so good,
>that running a bit under on the raw images is no problem at all.

That's what I feel, exactly,

Shot using a Fuji GX680 with a 100mm lens.
I really enjoy shooting with this camera.

You are right.
Real sixties' models are very rarely seen here these days.
Most of those in fairly routine use are those of early seventies.

I found the solid grey background distracting (for a photograph).

Re: PESO bouquet

2020-02-23 Thread Bulent Celasun
Larry,
I have looked at all and I liked some of them.
On reflection, I've noticed that all the ones I liked had either a
black or almost black background.
Perhaps I feel that the background color (does not matter which) is
competing for attention and
somehow overpowering the colors of flowers.
I also liked the effect of light coming from our left in creating a 3D look.
