AFAIK, Pentax has never even publicly acknowledged this problem. It is present in a bunch of models, including K-5s, PS', and I suspect K-3, but don't know for sure. Re: OT - UHS-capable for SDHC/SDXC cards USB 3.0 card readers -- help needed
Hi Rob, Thanks for your response. After sending the message, I actually found this exactly model on BH and even put it in the shopping cart. So, you confirmation is helpful. I don't seem to see any that supports UHS-3, but I think I am not going to buy that expensive card at the moment either... It would've been nice to get a reader that would last longer, as I am sure one of the next generations of the serious cameras (DSLRs and possibly mirrorless) will start supporting UHS-3, - actually, as soon as they would add the gimmick of 4K video. I found that SanDisk Extreme PRO UHS-II SD supports UHS-II, but I am not sure if it is what UHS-3 is... I am confused by UHS-II... In any case,- it costs from $45 and up, and reported (on BH site) to be fragile... So, I am not going for it. OT - MLC vs SLC SD cards
I just dicovered that some of the faster SD cards, e.g. Ultimate from Transcend are MLC (Multi-level cell) as opposed to SLC (single level cell). http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/71ooxNtTTTL._SL1500_.jpg Panasonic also explicitly mentions SLC vs MLC in their lineup: http://panasonic.net/avc/sdcard/industrial_sd/lineup.html So, I wonder if all fastest cards in the lineup for other manifacturers are also MLC (e.g. SanDisk Extreme or Extreme Pro?). I was unable to find that information about SanDisk lineup. Does anybody here know that? From what I know, MLC are cheaper and can be faster than SLC, but have short[er] life-cycle (number of rewritings). see e.g. here: http://www.oempcworld.com/support/SLC_vs_MLC.htm On another hand, I am not sure if that matters. I am thinking, how many time each of my cards gets completely written-over. I guess, roughly about once a month (at most). So, even with the endurance of 10k cycles, it should be sufficient for about 5-7 (or even 10) years that I expect to used the card. Any thoughts on MLC vs SLC in SD cards? In the past months I had two cases of a glitch on two different cards (one - SanDisk, the other one - HP), so, I am a bit hesitant to rely on those. Hence, I am considering buying a couple of new cards. Re: OT - Epson 3880
Mark, Just in case, - I just saw that there is a $200 rebate for 3880, and it is ending today, August 31. I don't know how it is with Epson, - it might mean that there will be yet a lower price or a different rebate in September... But in any case, - it looks like BH has that rebate, and their price is lower than at other places: $1139, and the rebate is applicable. (double check it yourself though.) When I went to fire up the print last month the photo black was also empty then - though then as now it shows nearly full on the printers usage gauge. My guess is that the PK ink is slowly draining into the maintenance tray when the printer is idle. I'm thinking about replacing this with a 3880, basically the same printer but with the updated K3 inks (vivid magenta). Is anyone here using the 3880 now? Any comments on it? I have found that the 3800 has met my relatively low volume needs for the past 6 or 7 years, with my only complaint being that it is a little flimsy on the build quality. If the 3880 is the same that would be OK. Does anyone know if the 3880 can use the same ink cartridges as the 3800? The ones I have in the 3800 are all 80% full or more and I have 8 new cartridges on hand - all tolled that is almost $1,000 worth of ink. I may be able to sell the sealed cartridges but am sure I could not sell the ones installed in the printer now. Darren, You probably are aware of this, but just in case: I found that the metallic paper is less forgiving with respect to the blown highlights. In addition, the color gamut for that paper is slightly smaller than that for a regular paper. So, to avoid surprises, I encourage to you preview function in Photoshop (I am not sure that it is possible to do in LR, at least up to LR-3) for the proper mpix metallic paper profile. Re: OT: Sandisk Extreme failure and it gets HOT
I won't bother telling all the details of my story with SanDisk. However, the resume is as follows (limited on my very long conversations with several people of their customer service, including their managers): If you are willing to return the broken card to them, you don't really need any receipt. I don't remember for sure, but I believe they might ask _where_ you purchased it and maybe when (approximately), but even that might not be neceswsary, since it's a lifetime warranty. If you have information on the card that you are not willing to share with them, then it would be hard to get anything from them. I was able to get them to agree to some point, but in the end decided just to drop that case (the card was already to inexpensive, and smallish, 8GB). So, when talking to them, don't try guessing if the chair came onto the cart. You don't know that. So, as long as there is no visible extrenal damage, I think it's fine. In my case, e.g. the problem was in the protection switch lever that fell off (by itself). They had no problem with that. Hope this helps. Just yesterday I had my second incident with the SanDisk Ultra 64 GB card (The first one was a small glitch, when one file was corrupted). After recording a short video, I saw that the light was still blinking as if it was still recording... After a minute, it was still blinking ... Turning the camera off didn't help. SO, I had to pull the battery. After that the camera started giving random errors: no card in the slot, the card is full (while it was not). Then it showed a correct number of the shots remaining. At that point I removed it from the camera and inserted in a different card. I'll see if it is readable later, when I get time. Igor P.J. Alling Wed, 06 Aug 2014 21:57:07 -0700 wrote: I've gotten a couple of card error messages on older class 4 4gb Sandisk cards I originally used with the K20D. On the first, I tried putting the card into the K20D which then formatted the card and it worked fine, the second card appeared to format in the K20D but then failed when I attempted a test photo with the K20D. The first actually worked in the K-5II after being formatted by the K20D. I don't really trust that first card, but it's there in a pinch. I figured I'd take advantage of the lifetime guaranty from Sandisk, but gave up after realizing I couldn't prove I actually bought the card. Both cards were bought at the same time, and neither had given me any trouble before. Maybe it was just their time to fail. I turned the camera off, and upon removing the card, I noticed that it was VERY WARM. Repeating the cycle yields the same results. There are no external signs of damage - but I guess it's remotely possible that my office chair rode over it on the carpeted floor. Has anyone else ever seen a failure like this? While I have only tried Pentax AF540 with K-7, I didn't like it, and bought Metz 58 (not 2 yet), that I've been happily using ever since, with both K-7 and K-5IIs. IMHO, it works much better (but not universally perfectly, - so you have to use it smartly). I've been using it in two modes: either in A, where the flash decides when to cut itself off, or in PTTL. In most cases, I find that A mode works better, especially when I turn the main flash up, and have the front fill-in sub-flash enabled. I use PTTL often for forward-facing (typically longer-distance) shots. Also, PTTL seems to work somewhat better at the very close range (1-3 feet), maybe because camera's CPU is faster to cut off this powerhouse. I agree, however, that the buttons of Pentax AF540 are more convenient than the menues of Metz 58. Those menues are frustrating. But I choose a better functionality. Also, there were some problems (and I don't remember all the details), that Pentax AF540 didn't not keep its settings upon power-cycling, and it might not allow a manual mode. (Larry might still remember this part, - he complained about that more recently.) It looks like Metz 58-2 might have a better hotshoe mount, which is welcome, as the one in Metz 58 is becoming a bit loose after a lot of use, and may require occasional adjustment after insertion. See my earlier response about Metz 58 in this thread: https://www.mail-archive.com/pdml@pdml.net/msg656989.html HTH, Igor Thu Jul 31 16:36:09 EDT 2014 Paul pentax1941 at gmail.com wrote: I have both the Metz 58 and the Pentax AF540 and would pretty much concur with the Amazon review from Darren's link. Both will tilt and swivel, features that I prefer for better lighting. The Pentax is a little quicker to use since you can make most changes via buttons rather than spending time in menus. The secondary flash on the Metz is very useful for a fill light and the Metz is upgradeable via a USB cable. Either one will serve you well. The Pentax *is* pricier by about $50. -p On 7/31/2014 1:19 PM, Darren Addy wrote: I've never owned a modern Pentax flash. Re: PESO: Flying into the Sunset
Hi Dan, I've been busy to write any comments, but I thought I'd quickly on this photo. First, it took me some time to figure out _who_ is flying. Then, I realized what it was. I like the colors and the light, but I think the framing is not that good to make a connection between the helicopter and the sun. If you didn't crop it, and hence don't have more around the helicopter, I would actually consider chopping [!] it off completely, for a nice picture of the sunset. Re: OT: Timelapse Tour of Europe
It is a nice set of photos, thanks for posting the link, Dan. I was thinking about it at a philosophical level: time-lape photos as a new genre. There is a recent (~20 years?) trend when we don't have time (and desire) to focus on watching anything for longer than a few seconds. So, this type of video is an alternative way of showing that. Does it look cool because of this or it is just cool? So, is it a trend du jour, or a genre that was enabled by technology and will last? I wonder what fellow PDMLers think about it. Hi Paul, That is a nice shot. My comment is that it can benefit from a bit of a CW rotation. I understand that the ground is sloped, but the tree (or a pole?) in the background is a nice guide how to restore the correct direction of the gravity. Having seen these and those posted by Dan recently, I've been thinking about two things: 1. There are many of these deers in our neighborhood, and especially in the spring, I call them kamikaze. 2. Re: PESO strawberry
Hi Larry, The picture on the face is interesting, but I don't think the strawberry fits into that picture. I don't know why: either the color gamma is wrong, the texture is different (smooth face vs. textured stawberry), the size is small, or something else. Of all photos with strawberries, the better one is probably LRC30829. But there are two things that could be improved: 1. She should have a strong, definitive hold of that strawberry: holding the strawberry itself, not the green tail. (the same applies to all photos) 2. Something is missing in the face expression. I think these are the best photos in this series: LRC30749 LRC30720 These could've been a nice shot showing the full picture, but the face expression is subpar on it: LRC30873. This face expression is much better: LRC30745, but there other problems here. Re: OT - And YOU didn't like how photographers were treated?
Ken, I've never had elite status with the SWA, so I don't know their rules. United and American Airlines both allow extending that privelege to your companion(S?): relative/friend/colleague. How many? I don't remember. I know that some priveleges (e.g. choosing priveleged seat) can be extended only to one companion. But with the priority boarding it might be for up-to 4-5 people. In any case, I've never had a problem bringing two people with me, using my status. More over, I've seen my colleague taking three with him (some very high AAdvantage status, flying on LAN). It typically costs airlines nothing, so, such an attitude over such a small detail is WEIRD. Yes, I know that in the confrontation game that is inflicted by most airlines constantly tightening existing and inventing new rules, (this feeling of a confrontation from the airline is especially apparent when anything starts deviating from normal, i.e. flight delays, cancellations, etc.), some passengers may have a short fuse and become unreasonable. But Tweet as a threat??? Threat of the world learning about that agent's attitude? What I was glad to see that the story received a good resonance, and hopefully other agents would be more thoughtful about their actions, regardless of their mood. Bob, I hear you, and agree, that often, one can avoid a confrontation and discharge growing tension. When I am traveling, I am usually trying to be in the up-lifting mood, and greet people with a smile. (In most cases, I am afraid to make compliments to women, especially of a comparable or younger ages about their appearance, as that can be taken a wrong way, but I am happy to thank for being helpful when that happens, especially when the person does some thoughtful work.) However, every time I see one of such little lords enjoying their small power over other people, it bothers me. In those cases, I usually wish these little lords' actions would backfire at them. It looks like it finally backfired in this case. Cheers, Igor Bob Sullivan Thu, 24 Jul 2014 12:39:07 -0700 Southwest is a lot like taking the bus. Quicker, but not much of a ride. Re: backpack for stuff as well as cameras - Lowepro Fastpack, anyone?
Hi Charles, Sorry, I don't have information about Fastpack 200, but I have used Fastpack 250 since April of 2008 (so it is not too new). Here are my two postings about my first experience with it: https://www.mail-archive.com/pdml@pdml.net/msg444934.html https://www.mail-archive.com/pdml@pdml.net/msg445138.html They contain some of the answers your are looking for. Back then, I was also considering Computrekker, when Jostein wrote his opinion on that one: https://www.mail-archive.com/pdml@pdml.net/msg440026.html Now, let me share with you something that you didn't ask for. Since that, I have discovered Vanguard Up-Rise bags. I bought a messenger style Up-Rise 33, but I also saw their analogs of the Fastpack line, and I liked those as well. Here is my impression of Up-Rise 33: http://pdml.net/pipermail/pdml_pdml.net/2013-March/340066.html Today, I would probably have bought Vanguard Up-Rise II 45 or 46, depending on the size need. Here are links for you with nice pictures: http://www.vanguardworld.com/index.php/en/pv/products/photo-video/detail-1-1-247-849.html http://www.vanguardworld.com/index.php/en/pv/products/photo-video/detail-1-1-247-850.html Mind that the Inside Dimensions (under specs) are quoted incorrectly! The build quality is also very good. The only negative side for my bag I see is how the rain cover is implemented. Essentially, I didn't find a way how you can put it on the bag, and carry it on the shoulder for any long period of time: it tends to get off the bag. This is due to the way how they designed this cover. So, the only reliable way to keep the bag inside the cover while carrying is to hold it under the armpit. However, I am not sure if this would be needed in a light drizzle, only in a substantial rain. I don't how the rain-cover is designed in the backpacks. Cheers, Igor PS. Disclaimer: I am not related to Vanguard company in any way, except for being happy with the quality of their product(s). It looks like access to the innards of the bag is relatively straightforward when you need to root around for extra gear (most backpacks make you take them off and lay them carefully on the ground before opening them up), and I like the quick access for pulling out the camera/lens combo if you've been walking around with the camera stowed. Xtol is also fairly fine-grained, but I think it will also provide better shadow detail than Rodinal. I would expect your old film to behave much like underexposed film, and Xtol should be quite good at pulling out whatever detail is still there. I just don't know how to deal with the uncertainty in the time, as they are using a machine, not manual processing. I wonder how much is X-Tol forgiving for the variation in time... Does anybody know? Even with the major US-market BW films, the development time was different for every film (not to mention longer, but non-standardized, times for push processing). I would expect that AI's equipment can develop for whatever time they tell it to. I would suggest discussing the concerns with them. They might, for example, want to extend development because of the age of the film and the fact that it was exposed a long time ago. Also, whether the negatives come out thick (unlikely) or thin, a lot of further adjustment can be made in the printing or scanning process. -- PDML Pentax-Discuss Mail List PDML@pdml.net http://pdml.net/mailman/listinfo/pdml_pdml.net to UNSUBSCRIBE from the PDML, please visit the link directly above and follow the directions.

Developing old BW film -- need help
Hi All, I discovered a few rolls of undeveloped BW film that are 20-some years old that I shot in late 1980s. I don't expect anything extremely valuable, but some shots might have some sentimental value. I wonder what would be the best way of trying to develop them. (I don't have any equipment for many years). 1. These rolls are Russian-made Tasma and/or Svema. Does anybody know by any chance (I didn't google this question in detail yet) if the process would be much different from that used for BW film in the US/the rest of the world, and what is the correct name for that process (like C-41, ...). I found mentioning about the processing was similar to ..Agfa 12, but any other developer (D-76, Microphren, etc.) will do. I don't know if this is correct, but assuming this is, - maybe that would help in the next question: 2. Is there any lab that still develops BW film and does that by mail (in the US)? 3. For these Russian films, the processing time was not standartized, and was specified on the individual boxes. If I were to find a place that would agree to develop these films, would they agree to use the timing I request? 4. Any other suggestions of how to proceed? 5. Is there anybody on the list who still does wet-processing him/herselve and has everything handy and running (within US and maybe Canada)? If so, would you agree to develop these films for me (there are only 3-4 rolls)? I would be happy to compensate for the nominal expenses and mailing them. Thanks to everybody who responded with suggestions. Darren and P.J., - thanks, - I had not known that resource, it's useful. It looks like the optimum process for both films would be Rodinal. Stan, - thanks, - but it looks like the information on the pages linked by Darren and P.J. is sufficient for figuring out the process. Matthew, thanks for the links to AI and Rocky Mountain Film Lab (RMFL). I am considering AI as a candidate. Does anybody know? RMFL is too expensive for what I need (36.50 per roll even though it includes scanning), and their service time is Please allow between one and twelve months for return. Combined with what they have on the News page circa 2012 about open-ended reorganization, that doesn't sound very encouraging. Re: Need help choosing from a pair of photos
Thanks a lot to everybody for the input! It looks like most people (almost everybody) prefer off-center placement. A tighter vs. loose crops preference is different for different people. These photos are a part of a larger gallery from the botanical garden of Moscow State University, which I visited during the first week of July, while attending a large international conference on magnetism. I've been told that all plants in this garden are from various parts of Russia (or possibly former Soviet Union as it was planted first in 1950s [at this, new location]). I'll be finalizing that gallery soon. Alan: in response to your question: BTW, water lilies are tropical flowers - are those growing in a controlled environment? In this particular case, to my surprise, I've been told that at this botanical garden, they remove these lilies for the winter. The reason I was surprised is that in Urals (Chelyabinsk Region, about 55N, 61E), where I grew up, the climate is even harsher (what is called ultracontinental climate, which means very wide range of temperatures with some extremes in summer and in winter). There, the same water lilies live naturally in lakes. So, they are not really tropical flowers. I think that even though the lakes freeze, the fact that the water at the bottom of the lake remains at about +4 degrees C allows all the vegetation to survive. Re: Need opinions on photo choice for contest entry
Darren, Many people have already chimed in and the leader photo is clear. But I thought I'd add my comments in case they'd be useful. My first reaction (I looked at the photos on my phone) was that the champion would be between #3 and #4, and #1 would be the next. And when I was choosing between #3 and #4 I chose the latter, because of the more dramatic contrast. But then when I looked more carefully, I noticed that #3 was actually in color (and I liked those colors), while #4 was in BW. And at that point I thought that in the current state #1 is winning. But, if #3 could be played with a bit so that the contrast between the tree and the background cloud stands out (the tree sort of glows in #4), that would be a more powerful rendition of that photo. I am not sure how to do that, but I would try playing with the selective sharpening (in LR that would involve moving masking slider very much to the right). Overall, I see several powerful images! And a few other comments: I don't have problems with the horizon (as somebody else has commented) or leaning trees. (And I am usually sensitive to these issues, especially in somebody else's photos. ;-) ) As for #5, what is missing for me is the ground at the bottom. That tower is hanging in the air. Re: Interesting emails on SanDisk SDHC Card Storage Case
Bipin, It looks like you are talking to an automated script or to a script-reader-button-pusher. SanDisk is notorious for such clowns (quite likely from some answering center). I've spoken with a bunch of them when I tried to replace my SD card that became unwritable through the loss of the write-protection slider and contained sensitive information that I was not willing to send to them. The hoops they asked me to jump through (in addition to the time wasted on the phone until I got to someone somewhat intelligent) was not worth the cost of the replacement card, so, I gave up at some point. I've seen similar automated responses from customer services of other large companies, e.g. Verizon Wireless. The purpose is to drive you to exhaustion (or insanity) so that you give up. Hi P.J., It's a colorful photograph. Sorry, I might be missing something, but I am not seeing anything that needs to be mocked. Are you making fun of the official event photographer? If you want them to be invisible as a shadow at the event, - I don't think that is a problem here. I don't know this company, but after looking at the company's website, I see that they are taking huge number of photographs at farely large sport events. Steve, I might be wrong, but to set up an iCloud e-mail account you have to own (use?) one of the internet-connected Apple devices. An assumption that all people have them might not be true. E.g. in my family, the only Apple-made device is an iPod-nano (Gen. 2 or 3?) that is used as a compact source of music for my little daughter. I don't hate Apple devices, I don't even have any... (... except for a tiny iPod-nano [Gen. 3] that was given as a gift at my wife's previous work.) Actually, I came close to having an Apple ID when I bought iphones for my brother. The moron (aka personal Apple consultant) who did the sales over the phone has enabled their e-mail spam to be delivered to the e-mail account that was used to receive the receipt for the purchase. Everybody I spoke to at the Apple support told me that they cannot disable it, and the only way to do that is to actually activate the Apple online account (from the phone [that I don't have]) or possibly on the web) and to change the e-mail preferences buried in it. Instead, I set it so that, all those messages from Apple are bounced to the person with the title Apple Senior iOS Technical Support who told me that. Apple support need to enjoy Apple experience. To be fair, in general, I think Apple provides a good service for the average mass customer, and that's why they are praised and loved. If your needs are different from their vision, you may have many problems with that. I am anything but the standard user. Stan, yes, I saw that but decided that I shouldn't be too picky. :-) Back when I was a kid, there was a very popular program Radio-Nanny. They were discussing a bunch of different things, but occasionally they were discussing some grammar questions in a funny way. One time there was this dialogue: - ... I saw it with my own eyes! ... - Hold on .. Do you have eyes that yours but not own(ed)? - I saw it with my eyes!... - Hold on... Can you see with somebody else's eyes? - I saw it with eyes!... - Can you see with something besides your eyes (maybe ears?) - I saw it! - There we go... What did you see? Back in the college, one of my faviorite professors wrote as a part of the autograph in his book: Tautology yields emphasis! Keep learning, Igor! Indeed, frequently, the intent of tautology is the emphasis. And that is a known effect and trend. I believe it has been even discussed on the popular radio program A Way With Words http://www.waywordradio.org/ It bothers me neverthless, I am with you on that. Re: Another one bites the dust -- Ilford
Paul, Thank you for the reference to the RR papers. Actually, right around the moment I was sending the message to PDML, I was checking your previous response to my quesiton about metallic papers, and checked out RR website for the pearl papers. I saw those satin papers. I am tempted to try them, but a combination of a few factors stops me at the point: 1. The shipping for just one pack of paper is a bit too expensive, about $7. Since I am buying Epson inks, I considered buying those from RR, instead of Atlex. While the nominal shipping is cheaper than that at Atlex, the prices make up and bring the overall cost some $15 higher than what I'd be paying at Atlex for a comparable package. I was also considering buying a sample pack, and I was very disappointed by the way they do their sample packs. They actually mark the paper on the FRONT side. They say that you can cut 8.5x11 pieces to a useable 8x10 size, but I have much smaller use for 8x10, and besides, I don't want to cut where I don't have to. You might consider it a caprice. To some extent, it is. When I see that Atlex sells _fully_ usable sample packs, (and has cheaper inks) I feel that RR makes their sample packs awkward way for no good reason. So, I am considering if I should vote against that with my wallet. But I am still thinking.. Re: GESO - above the fold
Hi Bruce, I also like the low-key shots better. If you are interested in some more detailed comments, their a below. Please excuse the amount of text and the critical component of these comments. There are two main reasons why I like the low-key images better. First, in the high-key, the paper-white (pun intended) background makes the entire composition sort of hanging in the air. (And, in a more subtle way, if I realize (from seeing the floor) that they are actually against the wall, that gives a strange impression of them being pressed against the wall.) That's why the shadows in the low-key shots do their job well. The second reason is that the low-key shots do not contain the problem discussed in the second part of this message. As for other minor comments: I would consider bringing the shadows up a bit on the second image, as it appears a bit darker (especially with the darke skin tone). To be very nit-picking (and I don't have much of personal experience of setting up the studio lights this way), - in the image 3 (2b), I would have the model turining her head just a few degrees to her right (or widen the lights on the photographer's right), to reveal a bit more of her shadow-side [left for her] eye. That's about the purely photographic side of this gallery. Now, I would comment on what has been increasingly bothering me recently (my pet peeve, if you wish). Usually this is not much about the photographer, but the subject of the photos (models in this case). Typically it happens in the shots that do not include much of dynamic motion. Those are either posed shots (studio), i.e. the shots where the motion is completely frozen, or on-stage shots (e.g. not-the-top-level-show musicians on stage, not-the-top-trained fashion shows), where the motion is not considered to be the 1st priority for the main action (as in musicians on stage). The reason for this is that the subjects are not properly trained for the positions of their body, and especially limbs. AFAIK, the top-level fashion models have at least some dance/ballet, ... training as a part of their walking technique training. The same is applicable to many top-level music performers, especially in pop, pop-rock, musical, etc. -- Those genres that give a lot of attention to the on-stage action, and the musicians (especially the soloists) get trained how to move on stage. I think this is the first time I noticed this in your photos. In this GESO, it is especially noticeable in the last two photos. Those poses are rather awkward and non-ergonomic as seen in several aspects (to various extent). The first thing that struck me is how the feet are turned in. This is most noticeable in the last two shots. The models appear as they can barely walk in high-heels. (My wife tells me that there is some niche of mid-level fashion shots, - such as Macy's, J.C.Penny's, etc. sales advertisements, - that suffers this problem. She says that apparently some consider it to be fine and even beautiful.) The knees are also turned in (that's a concequence of the feet position). The right hand of the light-skinned model in the last shot also has a bit awkward position. (The photographer can be partially blamed for this, but I would argue if the model were well trained for this, and the rest of the pose were less frozen, she wouldn't have had this awkward hand position). In the second to the last photo, even though the hand positions are less unnatural, they still seem to be somewhat like those of a barbie-doll. I actually discuss some related concerns in my dancers and photography workshops, - primarily for the benefits of dancers, but also for photographers to know what to watch for. There, it is even more important, as most of the time the dance is the transition between poses, not a frozen (struck) pose. Last December, I was shooting at the jazz concert of the daughter of our friend, a prominent professional photographer. At that concert, I saw exactly the same situation: the poses the singer held (and the moves) where at times very awkward. I discussed that situation with my wife, who had exactly the same impression. But the situation was such that we were not in position to offer our advice. We both thought that it's possible that nobody ever pointed it out to the young lady. As a result, I scrapped a bunch of shots that contained an awkard pose, and, in some cases, had to go with a somewhat technically inferior shots (the ambient stage light was harsh, and I was shooting from a fixed point in the middle of the audience, 4th or 5th row, frequently pulled by my little daughter). So, in most of the shots posted, the awkwardness of poses/motion is not noticeable: http://42graphy.org/music/olivia_harris/ Igor PS. Apparently, I am not the only one concerned about this trend. Here is a fashion blog (in Russian): http://fashiony.ru/page.php?id_n=33076 that featurs a bunch of fashion photos that suffer the clubfootness. Google
Re: GESO - above the fold
Bruce, Well, I guess that on the account of a few of my comments, -- they are that way by design. As for charleston, - I guess it was the fact that they didn't know how to do it well that resulted in such an awkward legs/feet positions. I photographed many swing dancers, including those dancing charlestone. I don't think I've ever seen anything as awkward. But, indeed, you can get the toes twisted inside. The first (albeit not the most representative) photo that I found among those posted online: http://42graphy.komkon.org/swing/lonestar-2010/_IR_3744.html This is an older photo, and hence the quality is not as good, but it shows the poses: http://42graphy.org/swing/raf-2007/krd/content/IMGP0736_large.html And you can see how it looks in dynamics (I am sure you are familiar with the original looks): http://youtu.be/grayhuxwGv4?t=2m16s Cheers, Igor Mon Jun 9 15:34:19 EDT 2014 Bruce Walker wrote: On Mon, Jun 9, 2014 at 1:50 PM, Igor Roshchin str at komkon.org wrote: Hi Bruce, I also like the low-key shots better. You are actually getting my intended meaning and look then, Igor. I wanted them to look 2D, flat like paper -- paper-white even (though the wall is actually warm off-white). I arranged the three softboxes around me where I was shooting from so as to give the scene completely flat lighting and produce those curious surround shadows typical of ring-lights. They become paper cutouts themselves. They look a little other-worldly and unnatural You are free to choose whether you like the look/effect, of course. ;-) That's why the shadows in the low-key shots do their job well. The second reason is that the low-key shots do not contain the problem discussed in the second part of this message. Yeah, that too-dark eye bothered me too. I'm trying to embrace shadow more though, and I've got plenty of examples of faces even more severely shadowed so I figured I'd leave it for now and see if it grows on me or what. That's about the purely photographic side of this gallery. Now, I would comment on what has been increasingly bothering me recently (my pet peeve, if you wish). It's interesting that the first thing that Google search for nadege returned (at least to me, YMMV), is that patisserie: https://www.google.com/search?q=nadege It would've been cool if the subject turned out to be the namesake of the place (e.g. Nadege du Bospertus). Re: PESO - Natural pendants (corrected link)
Thank you, Jack, Bob and Attila for the comments and suggestions. As for them not being vertical, - at the time of working on the images, I discovered that, even though I think I made sure my camera was actually vertical. Since all of them were at an angle, I suspect either I tilted the camera, or it was the effect of the wind (it was windy that evening). While it was easy to correct, I made an executive decision that it was windy, and left it as is. Sorry, I don't know the species. I realized that for all my flower/plant shots I made that evening at the Finnerty Gardens, I should've taken shots of the labels. There is a self-guided walk tour: http://www.uvic.ca/finnerty/assets/docs/FinnertyGardensWalkingTour.pdf but I am too lazy to google each of those plants to match to the images. I know that different people see bokeh from highlights differently, but it is still interesting, that Bob and Attila had directly opposite impression of those in this photo. :-) Below is an additional comment to Attila's suggestion. Sat May 31 14:34:41 EDT 2014 Jack Davis wrote: Jewel like and certainly unfamiliar to me. Shouldn't those Pendants be hanging straight down? Uniquely beautiful! Sat May 31 14:23:48 EDT 2014 Bob Sullivan wrote: Looks like it isn't straight, or it's a windy day? Out of focus highlights in the left background are a distraction. The background in the right is too busy, I would try a different angle to fill the background with that creamy bokeh form the left. Maybe keep a few leaves for context, but try to keep them above or near the top of the pendants. This needs careful positioning and framing, but if you find the right angle it could be very nice. Since those pendants look so small, I'd also try to isolate a group of them in a macro shot. That would be a totally different picture, but might worth trying if you can go back there. What plant is it? I actually tried a few other shots, and this angle seems to be giving the most interesting light. When I tried to zoom in (macro), as you suggested, the light effect was not as apparent. 10mm lens in Pentax K mount
I just discovered that Samyang introduced to the market a new lens in Pentax K mount: Samyang 10mm f/2.8 ED AS NCS CS Lens (Pentax K Mount) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1024857-REG/samyang_10mm_f_2_8_ed_as.html I seldom get use of ultra-wide lenses. And when I tried Pentax 12-24 couple of years ago, I found that it was too wide for my typical use. However, in my two recent trips twice I wished I had something wider than 17mm of my 17-70 and not fisheye (8mm). Still, it probably wouldn't justify for me buying a new lens now. Re: 10mm lens in Pentax K mount
AFAIK, all [recent] Samyang lenses come with the mount that analogous to A lenses of Pentax (i.e. KA mount). I didn't have a change to read the release documents that you mentioned, but I suspect they might mean something different by that automatic. (I saw mentioning of AE for Nikon.) Note that what has caused some confusion previously is that many merchants were posting images of Samyang lenses in different mounts onto the Pentax-mount product page. HTH, Igor Fri May 30 12:34:02 EDT 2014 P.J. Alling wrote: It looks like a decent lens, by all accounts, but the release documents quoted at a couple of sites don't look encouraging, in that only Nikon mounts are said to support automatic operation. What ever that might mean. What I'm taking it to mean is that all mounts except Nikon are plain old machined metal mounts with an aperture ring, while Nikon has the electronics for open aperture metering. KA mounts are simple enough to engineer but Samyang didn't bother to acquire whatever rights are now required to make anything other than plain K mount lenses. I could be wrong about that, but you would think that they'd tout having full metering compatibility with Pentax if they actually supported it.
