My Fulvia's muffler lost a dime sized hole out of the end of the main muffler

Yeah, you are not in the target market for a half frame P camera just like
the target market for this camera is interested in a view camera.

I remember when I was a kid all of the anti-drug propaganda that was made by adults who
were desperately trying to send out messages that were "cool", and failing
miserably.

I also look at every fashion trend that I think is incredibly lame, but which is the hot buzz, from
wearing trousers hanging so low that half your underwear is visible to "stanced" cars,
that I think is incredibly lame, but nonetheless is "cool".

I can't tell whether this is a case of Ricoh cluelessly trying to be cool, my being clueless
at what actually is cool, or both. There is a lot to be said in favor of the not just being
a 'me too' company and trying new things. I personally would prefer a K-1 III, and I'd also
prefer a UI that put less effort into being a large heavy expensive point and shoot, and
more into making it easier to get the best possible raw file. Unfortunately, once again, I
am not what large companies perceive as their target market, otherwise I would have been
able to find a sporty rear wheel drive hatchback (estate or shooting brake) car that gets
>35MPG on the freeway, has a manual transmission and doesn't have all sorts of
"features" where the car does things that the driver doesn't explicitly tell it to
do.

Over on the Forum of Pentax this camera is getting quite a bit of buzz from
people who still treat photography as a fun experiment.

You mean that there are people who think that photography is actually fun?

I was quite surprised that it is a vertical half frame, but the logic behind
that decision is that a vertical format is what the target market is already
comfortable with.

I'm inclined to suggest that one of the biggest advantages of film is that
every frame does cost money, it is what forces you to slow down and think about
each shot.

If Ricoh were really thinking outside the box, they would take a film SLR and
replace the focusing screen with a sensor. The viewfinder would be electronic,
and it would be able to take digital images either as proofs or cheap snaps,
but when you wanted, you could flip a switch and expose a frame of film.

Re: Problems reading SD cards

On 2/22/2024 4:55 PM, Bob W PDML wrote:

If you put the cards back in the camera can you still see all the photos in
preview?

Yes. The photos were all still there on the card when I looked at the
little TV screen on the back.

I finally did manage to copy them all (except for one that was
corrupted) over to the computer ... by various means.

I figured out it was pulling down approximately 8 images before the
error would occur, so I went over to Windows where I could pull up the
DCIM folder & view the sub-folders.

I made a DCIM "copy" folder on my desktop and then copied the
sub-folders one at a time. When it would error out, I'd remove the card
reader from the USB and reinsert it.

I could see which files had copied before the error, so I'd take the
next 8 files & copy them ... then the NEXT 8 until I got an error ...

At which point repeat removing & reinserting the card reader and carry
on ...

Once I had all the photos (verified I can see & open them from Bridge) I
have since reformatted the cards.

Can you use the camera as the card reader? That is, connect the camera to the
computer and download from there.

I don't have the necessary equipment to do it that way so I don't know.

Can you download to a non-Windows device, such as a phone?

Ditto ...

EXCEPT I did the process I outline above on a different Windoze computer
(my game & goofing off computer) and then copied the images over to my
file server and then pulled them from the file server to the Photoshop
Computer.

Since then I've been going through ALL of my photos on the Photoshop
Computer & verifying them.

It's been 20 years plus 1 week since I got my *ist-D. The *ist-D, K10D &
K20D have all rolled over past at least once.

I'm up to 2016 so far. The only thing I've run into is there are periods
when I didn't rename the photos upon uploading ... IMGP to
istD-0; IMGP to istD-1 and so on for the K10D, K20D, K-3 &
K-1 (the K-1 got the numbers reset when I had to send it in for repair,
so it's already at "K-1_1" even though it hadn't rolled over).

And I've found duplicate folders where one will have the images IMGP1234
and the other will have Kxx-01234. Takes me a while to compare the
folders and make sure there are no images I haven't duplicated in
renamed images folder.

I keep ALL of my images - good, bad & ugly - because having gaps in the
numbering confuses me and I worry I've lost images somewhere, but once I
have verified that I have all the images in both folders I will delete
the folder that doesn't have the images renamed.

Anyway, I've got less than 10 years worth of images still left to verify
... so back to work.

distracting elements, nicely framed, just the sun and moon.

And then there is Paul Sorenson’s Fiesta!! I like the colors, the overall

The PUG is always a treat. Thanks again Brian.

Excellent.

My sister lives in Collinsville, North of Dallas. I'll be staying with her,
we'll probably watch it from the place of a friend of hers about 120 miles away.

480 miles day 1, 452 miles day 2 & two days rest before & after the eclipse ... 452
& 480 returning.

Made damn sure I printed out the confirmation emails and double-checked they
have the correct dates (after the fiasco with that hotel in Albuquerque).

I'll likely couch surf with friends in Albaquerque, it's about halfway. My
most Banzai trip was Austin to San Francisco, solo, in 24 hours. Leaving
Austin at midnight and napping in rest stops on the way.

I've located a Texas Safety Rest area on of I-10, near Kerrville, that's
approximately 12 miles off the center-line that I think I can set up in. I
should get at least 4 minutes of totality from that location.

You should plan on getting there very early. For the last eclipse, I scoped
out a place a couple days ahead, and it was jam packed and had to find another.

That's why my plan has me arriving in the area two days ahead of the
eclipse. It'll give me time to scope out the area ahead of time.

In 2017 I didn't settle on a location until the morning before & ended
up driving all day & all night to get to Hopkinsville, KY. (weather
predicted to be SEVERE CLEAR on the Saturday before ...)

Didn't have any problems finding a place to set up. The small shopping
center that had the JCPenney store was renting out spaces (about the
size 4 parking spaces) for $20.

Last October's trip was a practice run. Because it wasn't a TOTAL
eclipse, I found most people I talked to didn't even know there was
going to be an eclipse ... except for the people at the "National Museum
of Nuclear Science & History" (where I bought a new pair of eclipse
glasses because I'd left mine at home).

San Antonio is right on the edge of the path of totality.

All of the hotels I checked (Kerrville, TX) in the path of totality
appear to be well aware of the eclipse ... the normally $90/night hotels
have prices jacked up to $600-$800/night.

The one I found in San Antonio DOES NOT have their prices jacked up.

MS-DOS? Really? I believe MS-DOS defaults to FAT16, while Windows went to
FAT32
a long, long time ago (with, I believe, Win95). If they really are MS-DOS
machines
then there may be a reason why they can't read your "MS-DOS-formatted flash
drive";
the FAT32 partition size limit is 32GB, and today's thumb drives are larger
than that.

Larger drives will probably use either NTFS or exFAT; Most modern systems can
read
and write either of these, but it's possible that the classroom computers can
only
read one of those formats, and your disks (but not, presumably, your classmates
disks) are formatted using the other one.

It doesn’t have to be UTC of course - it could be any time you choose as the

the cameras have the same time. It’s not like you look at the camera to tell
the time in whatever non-home timezone you may find yourself, you have a watch
for that, presumably.

I have a hard time even remembering to "Spring Forward/Fall Back" ...
the "fall back" part isn't that big of a problem, but the week after
"spring forward" I'd be late for my own hanging.

What I've got is I got the *ist-D early in 2004 and set the time to "New
York" (aka Eastern US time zone) and shipped out to Iraq a couple of
weeks later.

I didn't notice the time zone setting until I'd been in country for
several months. And after I did notice, I was back home for several
months before I noticed the camera was still on "Moscow" time (Iraq time
zone)

So I've got more than a year's worth of photos where the time is off by
12 hours. It's not a world shaking problem, but it BUGS ME - like ALWAYS
being pursued by a cloud of mosquitos. Low level irritation, but
constant and forever.

Whenever I've tried to fix it in post it ends up screwing with the DATE
(trying to change Date Taken to the current computer date/time).

To a lesser extent I've had the same "problems" with the K10D, K20D, K-3
& the K-1.

A camera that could automagically determine the local time zone & keep
the internal clock updated would suit me just fine. My cell phone can do
it, why can't my camera?

I use the cell phone camera occasionally, but I like my DSLRs more. I
couldn't have done the eclipse on my cell phone.

I’d expect the satellites to transmit UTC. Local time is a function of UTC and
the time zone offset and savings time, derived from the GPS coordinates.

If I were you I’d set all my cameras to UTC, then you shouldn’t have any
problems merging image files from different cameras and getting the date/time
sorting all stuffed up.

Then photograph a town name from time to time so you have an embedded record of
where you were. Modern operating systems can recognise and select text in image
files, so you can copy and paste it into the metadata if you want to.

Wouldn't be a problem if it had been in one of the little towns. I'm
pretty good at sorting out the landmarks.

It's the photos "I know it was out in the middle of nowhere along the
highway between Stephenville and San Angelo" that give me fits. That's
where the built in GPS would come in handy.

I'll have to think about changing over to UTC.

So, in the midst of other activities, I've been chipping away at the

Then I'll be able to transfer a bunch of files, reformat the external

Stay tuned.

There are a couple of lenses on my wishlist. I don't have an immediate need for
them, but they're always on the back of my mind and I could be motivated by a
particularly good deal.

85/1.4 I can find an FA* 85/1.4, with hood on ebay (from Japan) for $650,
which is about half of what a dfa 85/1.4 would cost, even used. I love my
77/1.8 but when photographing musicians I always seem to want a bit more reach
and a bit more speed.

Sigma 18-35/1.8 Now that my K-3 III is my daily driver body, and my K-1 is my
special purpose body, the 18-35 would be very handy for shooting indoors and
save me from swapping between my 20/1.8 and 31/1.8.

24-70/2.8 I've got the tamron 28-75/2.8 and it's a great fair weather daily
driver, but for foul weather I'm stuck with the 28-105 which is generally fast
enough for outdoors which is where I usually need weather sealing.

A modern "long" lens. My 50-500 bigma has given me many years of good service,
but its focus is a bit slow and a bit noisy. There have been many times that I've tried
to photograph a critter and as soon as I tried to autofocus the noise of the lens scared
the beast away.

Can't really help with any of the other. I too would like to have the
85/1.4.

What do you think would be a *fair* price for a 50-500 "Bigma"? What
does the list think would be a fair price?

I have one that I don't think I'll ever use again now that I do have the
600/4.

I also found out that the "HD Pentax-DA 1.4x AW AF Rear Converter"
(which I DID get from KEH) noticeably vignettes on Full Frame.

I think I can crop in and/or dodge the corners sufficiently that it
won't matter that much ... otherwise I'll just have to take that into
account & live with it.

But I don't know why Ricoh Pentax didn't make it so it would work with
their "flagship" camera?

I've used it since the days I mostly carried only 3 lenses - Tokina

or K20D) with the other carried on my sling with FA-50 f/1.4 mounted

... or alternatively with the other body carried on the sling with the
28-70 f/2.8 mounted & the FA-50 f/1.4 in the bag.

Plus a Sigma 1.4 tele-converter, strobe, spare batteries, chargers & a
few other accessories.

[... and later the K-3 & K20D ... and later still the K-1/K-3 and most
recently K-1/K-3 with the IR converted K20D - 1 in the bag, 1 on the
sling & the K20D on a neck strap]

If I need to carry any more than that I have the Lowepro Nature Trekker
AW II.

Haven't thought about looking for another bag for a while, but I might
get a Lowepro CompuTrekker AW - just looking at them it seems to be the
same as my workhorse Mini Trekker, but with room for a laptop.

I also HAVE the Lowepro Fastpak 350 - got it real cheap from Tiger
Direct when they had a retail store in the area. Didn't take too long to
figure out WHY it was so cheap - didn't have enough carrying capacity to
be useful.

You do realize that IF you could find a general purpose, all-around bag
suitable for EVERY occasion, it wouldn't be an unending quest.

storage and transport, aka camera bags and related. I will observe that
preferences for camera bags, tend to be even more personal than preferences in
the bedroom, and one’s individual needs, even more diverse. Hell, my camera
bag needs will change dramatically depending on whether I’m driving some place
for astrolandscapes, or going for a hike in the woods. So…

Before you tell me what works for you, think about what I say about my needs,
and first let me know of what you think would solve my problems, then you can
mention why your preference is the one true camera bag.

For many years, I used a Lowepro Fastpak 350, it was big enough to hold all, or
then most, of my lenses. Then two things happened, they stopped making them,
and I got my K-1. With my K-1 I got a bunch more full frame wider angle of
view lenses, many of which are modern designs which are also bigger and
heavier. There just wasn’t room in the 350, and I replaced that with a Tenba,
which was a bit bigger, and also had external straps for a tripod which worked
until I expanded my lens collection even more. Now that bag is just way to
effing heavy if I want to be prepared “for whatever”.

Also, my job moved to Riverside (about 400 miles south of my home base in Santa
Cruz) and I’m spending most of my time there, where I now need to rethink how I
store the gear that I’m not immediately using.

I’ve been muddling along, and yesterday saw an ad for a think tank rolling
airporter bag. At first the system looks awesome, if pricey and there’s a
Neewer 2 in 1 for less than half the price, that also has backpack straps.
But, I really don’t need wheels, and don’t plan to do much flying in the near
future anyways. Besides I have a Pelican case, which in many ways is great,
but all that protection weighs a lot and takes up a lot of space.

One challenge that I face is that lenses tend to come in three size ranges:

small: classic Pentax primes, and most micro 4/3

Medium: modern primes and classic zooms

Large: modern zooms, and classic telephoto

The challenge is that a camera bag that fits medium/large lenses could carry
the small lenses stacked two deep, or stacked over a compartment filled with
speedlights etc. but end up with the smaller lenses rattling around loosely.

I have found myself with three systems:

Micro 4/3: I carry my micro 4/3 on my bike. It does better than my phone
(though my phone is catching up) and is about half the weight of my APS Pentax.

APS DSLR: My K-3 III makes a great daily driver system. In most shooting
situations the results are either indistinquishable from my K-1, or often
better. It also has the advantage of the lenses being lighter, and my
telephotos have greater reach (yeah I could crop on the K-1 but it still has a
faster frame rate, and better autofocus).

Full Frame DSLR: When I need a wider angle of view the K-1 still works better
than the K-3III because physics. The K-1 lenses all work on the K-3 III but
often at the cost of weighing twice as much.

What I think that I’d like is a few camera bags, one primarily dedicated to
each camera body, with the lenses I most use with that body, and

Peso: Prince in IR

2023-11-06 Thread John Sessoms
I'm finally beginning to look through the photos I've been taking this
year including the ones from my recent trip.

Starting with something frivolous - my little buddy in IR, in his car
seat on our first day on the road.

I was just messing around with the K20D I had converted. I don't really
have the hang of it yet. Don't really know what's going to make a good

Re: Good find today (not Pentax)

2023-09-29 Thread John Sessoms
It was a VERY TINY, little, dingy camera shop the width of a door and a
counter ...

Maybe 10' wide (3m) and 25' or so deep (7.5m) although I think there was
a back room.

You walked in the door and there was a counter running the length of the
right hand side; couple of hanging fluorescent light fixtures running
lengthwise - just bare tubes.

The owner sat on a stool behind the counter. I think he was the only
employee ...

There were shelves stacked up to to ceiling running the length of the
room on the right behind the owner, and maybe shelves along the left
hand side.

I was only in there a couple of times because I couldn't afford to buy
anything & it's been more than 50 years, so all I have is a vague visual
impression ... almost a monochrome memory.

I think he sold Nikon and a lot of used stuff - trade ins.

That's what the camera I bought was.

https://www.google.com/maps/@35.7791792,-78.6381585,3a,75y,99.69h,91.35t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sjpfrujhXv2hiAlA_cbAKJg!2e0!7i16384!8i8192?entry=ttu

I may be wrong about the "hole-in-the-wall" not being there any more.

If you load the Google Map, it could be the store-front at "107 S.
Wilmington St" (white building with grey & rust colored trim & window
A/C unit over the door)

... but it hasn't been a camera store in a long, long time.

I'll have to go over to the Library where they keep the old phone books
and see if I can find a listing in the Yellow Pages, but IIRC, the name
was "Capital Camera".

That's cool. My very first SLR, back when I was in college (1968), was a
Praktica. It's been a long time, but I don't remember if mine had the
"USSR Occupied" stamp on the back.

Bought it from a hole-in-the-wall independent here in Raleigh; long
since gone, I don't even think the hole is still there in the wall. Got
a fairly good deal - camera, two lenses & a flash (bulbs).

I wore the shutter out and took it to a guy who repaired cameras in his
garage (recommended by the store I bought it from because he was the
only guy who worked on odd brands).

The guy moved out in the middle of the night & left no forwarding
address, so I never got my camera back. But I THINK I still have one of
the lenses around here somewhere.

Any idea what year it is?

I didn't get another SLR until sometime in the mid-80s when I first saw
a Pentax at the PX.

I did a quick Google Maps search of Brisbane and there are a bunch of
camera stores in Brisbane. Checking just a few via their web pages, some

You could check them online & search to see if any of them stock the B

I didn't do a search for Perth ...

Re: IR Photography

2023-07-13 Thread John Sessoms
I watched a video on InfraRed photography that emphasized the utility of
shooting when the light is NOT so good; too hot, too harsh, to specular
in the middle of the day.

Even before Covid, I was having problems getting out and shooting in the
golden hours & IR looked like something I could do with the time when I
WAS able to go out & shoot.

With digital you can get some kind of immediate feedback so it's not
like shooting film. I hope it's going to complement my other
photography, not replace it.

AND I think some of the apparent problem with the focus is the softness
of in camera JPEG conversions. AND ALSO ... I'm at the very beginning of
the learning curve.

Further, I've re-read the explanation about (665nm) IR. I now think it
cuts off the color in the blue & green part of the spectrum leaving the
spectrum ABOVE 665nm - oranges, reds & invisible InfraRed ...

Anyway, I'm still learning.

On 7/13/2023 2:53 AM, Alan C wrote:

special filter to block out visible light - made a slide on holder from
thin cardboard. Exposures were around f8 from about 0.5 to 5 sec (pot
luck!) which made a tripod mandatory - still have the very same tripod.
Manual guesstimate timing on "B" with a cable release. Focusing was a
nightmare because the filter was so dark I had to focus without the
filter & then slide it in and adjust to the IR mark on my Supertak 55/2
(which I still have!). Pity I didn't think of Larry's sticky tape astro
method to lock the focus. Only 2 or 3 shots out of the 48 were even on
the verge of acceptability so that was the end of my adventure.

Yeah, that bit me when I took my K20 to burning man after having it

"IF" I understand what they did, they replaced the regular IR filter

light PLUS the upper end of the IR spectrum ... ???
You *should* be able to get shots indoors just as you would with a
standard camera.

IR is supposed to be really good for harsh daylight (shooting in
the middle of the day), so I took it out from 1:00 to 3:00 today to
photograph a field of sunflowers that are just coming into bloom.

I had it at F8 using the SMC Pentax-DA 1:1.8 50mm lens it seems
like everything is really soft (out of focus?) except for stuff out
on the horizon.

I've got to go out and make another test, but anyone got ideas?
You'll need to focus based on the live view, which is what the
sensor sees, either that or manually focus based ton the distance
scale and the little red dot that shows the IR focus point.  The
autofocus system focuses for the visual spectrum, but IR focuses
differently.

H? The K20D has live view?
Hmmm, that’s an issue.  Maybe take some test shots and look at the
preview screen zoomed in.

If you photograph under LED or fluorescent light there should be no IR.

OT: Getting settled

I'm in the new house now. Starting to get settled in - unpacking;
getting furniture out of the POD; assembling my home network so my
internet computer, my Photoshop computer & my file servers can talk to
each other;

... getting an electrician in to fix the F#*@-UP with the kitchen wiring
(IDIOTS cut off the ground wires - GFI won't work because there's NO
GROUND for it to detect ground faults).

Got to get that fixed right away. Soonest I could get an electrician
scheduled was tomorrow (Monday) from 12 - 3. I hope he can get it fixed
in that time, but if not ... it will take however long it will take.

I did get out today and found the nearest access point to the Greenway
System, so I'll have a place to walk & maybe finally get to take a few
photographs.

Took Prince along with me and then we went to Lowe's & bought what I'll
need to mount devices on the walls.

Anyway, my life is getting back to semi-normal and maybe I'll be able to
get back to productive photography soon. I had my K20D converted for
infra-red several months back and I haven't had a chance to test it out yet.

I kinda winced when I read that, Dave. ;-) You really need to leave
Time Machine alone to manage its own files. Many snapshots are
dependent on earlier data being there to be coherent. Normally it
clears space automatically as it needs room for new backup snapshots.

Sometimes the best thing to do with a malfunctioning Time Machine is
format the drive and restart TM using it. Basically, just reset and
start again. Of course you lose all the backups until now so you are
taking a risk, but just take care for the first few days until you
have a full and complete backup and a snapshot or two on the disk and
you should be good to go.
