If you're going to be using the external HD for any real time work,
you're going to need USB 3.0. The way to tell, if they followed
convention, the USB 2.0 ports are white the 3.0 are blue.

It kind of depends on the bus speed. However all other things being
equal, the Thumb drives should be faster than a cd/dvd drive. All
things are seldom equal.

The one thing that is sure, the 32 gig thumb drives will require less
user intervention assuming you packed as many files onto the thumb
drives and dvd's as possible.

Re: PESO -- The Red Boat.

2016-11-24 Thread P.J. Alling

I've thought about the suggestions that I received and well, maybe.

The wooden construction is the remains of an erosion control jetty, they
were made out of various materials, the earliest seem to have been of
wood or stone, though there were later ones of wood as well. The middle
period, say from the 1930's to the 1960's were made of steal or iron,
those have fared the worst and most have almost completely rusted away.
Most places, trying to control beach erosion has fallen out of favor, so
few are now being built and few of the existing ones are being
reconstructed.

Re: K-1 Turning Off Auto ISO

2016-11-20 Thread P.J. Alling
Which is exactly the way the K-5[II[s]] works. To set auto ISO the
K20D required a trip to the Fn ISO menu. Maybe the manual writers for
the K-1 assume that the only people who'd buy a K-1 at one time used a
K-7, K-5 or K-3, so they didn't need the information.

On 11/20/2016 6:09 PM, John wrote:

In the Index on page 123 it lists:

ISO Sensitivity ... 49

You set ISO AUTO by pressing the green button while holding down the ISO
button.

Turning the rear wheel while holding the ISO turns ISO AUTO back off and
resets the ISO Sensitivity to where-ever you leave off turning the wheel.

Index page 125 lists:

Sound Effects ... 28

That takes you to "Set-up Menus" where All of the sounds appear to be in
"wrench 1" where you can control the volume of the sounds & turn
individual sounds on & off.

Also lets you turn sounds on/off for Fx1 & Fx2 Buttons.

owned. Odd that in a professional-grade camera, there is no easy way
to turn off a feature designed for beginners.

Re: K-1 Questions

I think you turn of Auto ISO the same way as with a K-5 or K-3 hold down

It's in the menu under Roadrunner ;-). No it's probably the same as the
K-7 thru K-3 too. Which if I remember correctly it's on one of the menu
pages under the wrench, labeled something really confusing like BEEP. I
don't have the K-5 in front of me, and I may have confused that with the
K20D but it's probably close to that.

On 11/20/2016 12:48 PM, jtainter wrote:

So, can someone please help me with a couple of questions?

1. How do I turn off Auto ISO?

2. How do I turn off the focus beep?

Re: K-1 and Photoshop CS6

The only reason to use PEF format is if you're shooting a *ist-D since

Re: Are the lenses really that good?

2016-11-18 Thread P.J. Alling
I don't know from first hand experience the quality of the Pentax
28-105mm, but I think you're asking the wrong question.

Whether the D FA 28-105 is that good or not is irrelevant. Look at the
prices for equivalent lenses from other manufactures that offer cameras
with FF sensors.

I haven't actually done an extensive search but, to start out with the
only lens I could find that actually matches the gross specifications of
the Pentax is an older Tamron Adaptal which B is selling for about $500.

Nikon doesn't have a FF in that exact focal range, but their 24-85mm
f3.8~5.6 is selling at B for, oh look at that about $500.

Canon has a 24-105mm f3.5~5.6 which is selling selling for $600. Canon
also has a 28-135mm f3.5~5.6 selling for $300. I suppose you could take
the average and say Canon is about the same but selling for less...

Sony well they don't have a pro-sumer zoom in A mount, according to
their site anyway, so you go straight to their 24-70 f2.8 pro offering
at about two grand, for the E mount they offer a 28-70mm f3.5~5.6 for,
oh, look, about $500.

So there's your answer if you want a second tier normal zoom for a full
frame digital camera in any current system, you're going to pay $500
whether it's worth it or not.

As to the macro reflection issues, I don't have a good answer. It might
depend on what are you using for light sources. Flash or continuous.
If continuous, tungsten, florescent, or LED. Maybe you can change the
lighting type to alleviate the problem. I really don't know it's not an
issue I've run into.

On 11/18/2016 9:01 AM, Collin B wrote:

I read a good review on the D FA 28-105. But $500?
While I appreciate Pentax, ok Ricoh, apparently pulling a Sony and going
largely pro-sumer with some quality glass, I need to be able to afford it.
:-)
Has anyone compared the three film 28-105 lenses to the D FA?

Also, I've put the FA50/2.8 macro on a DSLR in shop. Have to be careful
about light intensity as I can get a blue spot in the middle of the images.
Have read of this on Nikon forums as well. It appears to be a conflict
between the character of the old film coatings against reflections off the
sensor. But it only happens under product lighting (FL). (Never happened
with the A50/2.8 Macro.) Anyone else here dealing/dealt with the issue?

2016-11-15 Thread P.J. Alling
This is only marginally on topic, because it's an upgrade item for my

I'm on Amazon's list for Gold Box deals, which I pretty much ignore
because there's usually nothing I want to buy, and if I don't want to
buy it a better price isn't going to persuade me.

Today lo and behold I get notification that something. that I've had in
my Amazon Shopping cart for ages, is a Gold Box item. Hot damn,
something I want or need is actually on sale, at a door buster price!

Well no, not really, it's the same damned price it's been for the last
couple of months. But, maybe it's a different vendor that has that item
at a lower price...

So I start paging through the Gold Box deals. Geez, either the
programmers who write this stuff are surprisingly untallented, or Amazon
thinks their customers are surprisingly "simple"*. 288 pages of deals
on with duplicates on every second page of the exact item I've seen on a
previous page. What a freaking waste of time. I just gave up. If they
think I'm that easily influenced to buy crap they don't want my money.

I've used the 600mm Vivitar S1 Solid cat. It works pretty well when you
get the focus right. It is really tough to focus correctly when
shooting the moon, everything looks to be in focus, but since they focus
beyond infinity, you can be off enough to get really soft photos.

I wonder if anyone has ever tried the mirror 800 mm lenses for

(IIRC they were Korean: Samyang/Rokinon ?)

I don't know that much about Macs but on Windows the you only need about
twice as much paging file as actual physical memory, and if you're hard
drive which you seem to have. But if your drive is fragmented then even
with enough paging file, it can slow down the system when more paging
space is allocated. I don't know if disk defragmenting is a thing with
a Mac, but if it I'd try that first.

This appears to be a finch, and I shot it with the D FA 150-450 and
the A2X S converter. Like the other pic I posted it’s f8, 1/320th
and about ISO 28,00

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18307583=lg

For this one I put on the DA 1.4 AF converter and slowed the
shutter speed down to 1/80th, I was able to get the ISO down to
about 1500. (The bird, a Junko, was also in better light.)

http://photo.net/photodb/photo?photo_id=18307586=lg

The much slower shutter speed works fine if the bird down’t move,
but if he takes off I’ll lose what might be a good shot.

Tons of fun in the backyard.I shot the pics sitting in a lawn chair
with the camera on a tripod. I think sitting s a plus because it
minimizes my size.

Re: It's time for a digital flash

2016-11-07 Thread P.J. Alling
You can use pretty much any modern auto-thyristor flash, if you set the
aperture properly you'll get images pretty much as well exposed as you
would with a fancy P-TTL capable flash. The command interface on a late
model AF280T is even partially supported so in the auto modes it will
set the proper f stop and shutter speed.

"GUM" - "Upper Trading Rows", and iconic store in Moscow, Russia:

http://pug.komkon.org/16nov/slides/IR-%20IconicPlaces-Igor_IR34361.html

I am not sure if anybody read the Wikipedia linked below that image:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GUM_%28department_store%29
It is a historic building with the first of its kind (at the time it
was built - more than a century ago) engineering design.

Yet another structure built by the same engineer is the hyperboloid
"Shukhov tower": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shukhov_Tower

(on the UNESCO's "Endangered Buildings" list).
Unfortunately, I don't have any of my own photos of it.

A few interesting engineering facts about it:
Shukhov invented hyperboloid towers (Patent of 1899, applied 1896).
The original design called for 350 meters height, and that would weigh
2200 tons (metric). For comparison, Eiffel Tower (324 meters) weighs
over 10 000 tons. Due to the shortage of steel, Shukhov's tower is
only 160-meters tall.
Based on this idea, in 2005-2009, a 600-meter-high hyperboloid Canton
tower was built in Guangzhou, China. (For a brief moment it was the
tallest tower in the world, taking over that title from the CN Tower
in Toronto.)

A curious fact:
In 1941, a postal airplane that was expriencing technical problems,
touched with its wing the cable that was going from the top of the
tower to the ground (at an angle), - a leftover from the construction,
which was hanging there for several years since the tower was built.
That torn off the winch that was at the ground end, but the tower
remained intact and did not need any repairs. The plane crashed into
the nearby house's yard.

I try not to think about bags, or my dissatisfaction level would rise
exponentially.

I've got this old bag, that was gifted to me, it's 1970s vintage in a,

messenger bags being a thing). It's the best working bag, if you just
want to carry a couple of lenses one body and a flash, or forgo the
flash for a third lens, I've got, and haven't found a modern bag that's
better. Even thought the pockets leave something to be desired.

It's falling apart and I can't find a replacement. The worst part is it
probably wasn't even an expensive bag when it was new.

I really think bag designers actually design bags to /almost/ fit a
photographers needs so they'll become subtly dissatisfied and go buy
another bag.

Damn, now I have to go and have a stiff drink.

banged it around enough that some of the elements decentered, not the
most robust lens, though there was a lot of metal in it's construction
for a bargain all in wonder). The 18-250 actually has a much better

Unfortunately you have two focal points in the image but your lens is
only capable of rendering one in focus at a time. Right now I feel like
I want to see the rose in focus, and the church in focus. I had a
solution of sorts, (actually it was a way of showing off how good I was
at judging exposure, since is was done with a film carrier, modified
to, print both adjacent frames at the same time. But, it worked for
this too), I'd take two exposures one with the near point in focus one
with the far and print them as a diptych. I don't know how successful it
was, as art, but I liked them. It would be a lot easier to do digitally.

Re: Thoughts: pocketable compact with filmic ergonomics?

2016-11-05 Thread P.J. Alling
I've handled a Canon G12 felt solid like a 1970's compact fixed lens RF
camera. I expect any in the series would have the same feel and
capabilities. They were supposed to have very good image quality. The
optical viewfinder made that on a Kodak Instamatic 100 look good
unfortunately. The latest replacement in the series had dropped the
viewfinder entirely so don't go there if that's important to you.

Then there's also the Fujifilm X10 and X20 with the lovely hybrid
viewfinder. I haven't actually tried out one of those but supposedly
Fuji has seriously improved the usability with firmware updates. The X30
seems to have done away with the hybrid VF and only has a EVF. I have
played briefly with a Fujifilm XPro1 and the viewfinder is lovely so I'm
assuming the viewfinders on the X10 and X20 are as well.

If it were me looking for something like this I'd look at a Fujifilm
X20, but I've got a lovely Kodak Retina IIIc which is an old school RF
camera, so I'd probably just slip that in my pocket and be the envy of
hipsters everywhere, (are hipsters still a thing?)

So what I'd like is pocketable and with the "feel" of an old school
film camera. That is, simple ergonomics. Simple interface, with
buttons and dials for the important most-used functions. I need
reading glasses to see closeup and I prefer devices I can work largely
by feel. Best if it has a viewfinder. Willing to consider EVF if I can
see it in the flesh and it convinces me.

I'd be okay with a fixed lens, but it would have to be a normal. 50mm
FF equiv. Subjects would often be landscape features, and the wide
lenses on smartphones just drive me nuts.

As a fellow Pentax user, what compact camera like this would you recommend?

of which is the nature of the film coatings and the light

I only see the situation under the fl product lights.

Sorry I don't know what make of car it is, I will comment that I had

Malcolm

Phone cameras have pretty much displaced Bridge Cameras and P
cameras. I've even seen 8" tablets being used because the user thought
the big display thought it equaled "quality".

However when I was at Gillette's Castle a couple of days ago I saw a
couple of other DSLRs one looked like a D300, the other was too far away
to identify, but looked to be about the same size as a 70/80D or D90.

There weren't that many people there, but everyone else who probably
would have been using a P or Bridge a few years ago were taking
pictures with their phones.

Also given that most bridge cameras are designed to mimic DSLRs, thats
probably why you don't see a lot of DSLRs these days, you may not have
been seeing a lot of DSLRs before.

That's what I did in my example the filter used was red. I've played
with it a bit more, and a virtual green filter maintains the tones of
the original in B better, and a virtual dark orange filter is a better
compromise. Maintains more detail in the shadows, while not darkening
the sky quite as much. I'd post that one but I've already messed quite

Re: Fast Normal Zoom. (for APS-C)

2016-10-31 Thread P.J. Alling
OK, at this point I'm leaning towards the Tamron 17-50 f2.8. The one
report I've had from the list about it is that it's optically very
good. The outside reviews complain about it's plasticy build, and noisy
AF motor, but hell large numbers of even fairly expensive lenses are
mostly plastic these days and all my current AF lenses are screw drive,
I wouldn't know what to do if a lens didn't make /some/ noise. The
kicker is that Amazon is selling the damned things for a tiny bit less
than $250.00 grey market.

Optically it appears to be on par with the Pentax DA 16-50, and Sigma
17-50 for approximately 1/3 and 3/5 the price of the former and latter
respectively. True it's got the same warranty you'd get if you bought a
used lens but even then it's less than 1/2 the price of a LN used
Pentax, and about the same as the LN used Sigma.

The only fly in the ointment is that the USA version of the Tamaron has
a 6 year guarantee, does it need it. I know that was the selling point
of early imported Hyundai automobiles, they had the longest warranty in
the US market because you /needed/ it.

/deserved/ insecurity, about his lack of skills comes through in his
writing style. The actual tone of most of his writing could basically
be described as the digitalrev guys in print, something that doesn't
translate well, without the actual talent and sense of humor. A man's
got to know his limitations and stick within them.

Now I've actually given his review /more/ time than it deserves. Reading
it was 10 minutes of my life, I will never get back. Venting actually
felt cathartic.

You are an evil man. I was curious "what now?", so I went to his
website. I must not have ever actually seen any of Ken Rockwell's
photos, now I have, and I can't unsee them. I blame you.

Re: Fast Normal Zoom. (for APS-C)

2016-10-30 Thread P.J. Alling
It's only a stop slower than the other 16/17mm-50/55mm lenses, and the
same speed as the Pentax 17-70mm. Everything I've heard about it is
good, but I ruled it out because I've been looking for something that
fills in the gap between the short zoom and one of the 70-210mm lenses I
tend to favor.

I have the 16-45 Pentax DA F4 and am quite happy with it. It may not
be fast enough for you, but for me it works well.

It doesn't look like a Full Frame camera is in my budget for quite some
time, and let's face it, I've come to terms with APS-C. The K-5II is
more than sufficient for most of what I do, in fact is better than most
needs. A more identical backup body is what I'm more likely to get than
an actual full frame camera, maybe a K-7 another K-5[II(s)], or K3
thought the latter would have some of the same problems as using the
K20D as backup, though the K5II hasn't failed me yet.

So I'm looking at APS-C lenses.

I've kind of narrowed it down to five lenses, at this point, based on
reviews.

Pentax FA* 16-55 f2.8 available new.

Somewhat to my surprise, my DA*16-50/2.8 became my daily driver lens once I
got my K-5, which had enough sensor sensitivity that I could get by with a
slow lens. It's reasonably sharp, reasonably fast, waterproof and a handy
range.

However, if I didn't have the K-1, I'd be looking at a Sigma 18-35/1.8. The
downsides are a bit less range, and it is not weather sealed.
