I think that what I'm going to need to do is to get some strobes set

Re: Pentax KP camera size compared to K-5 and K-3 (long).

2017-01-26 Thread Patrick Nelson

Hi

I do believe I need to clarify something first. I born without thumbs
and this does influence how I look at and use things. I bought my first
SLR - a ME Super because it was the smallest SLR at the time and worked
best for me. The 2 button interface which many don't like I actually
prefer. Reading this post and thinking back at some other posts I have
seen I do feel I have to comment.

Last year I was looking at getting a new camera to upgrade from the K10
I had been using for 9-10 years. All the posts on the list about how
much better low light performance is on the newer camera's finally
penetrated. Here in South Africa we can't walk into a shop and look at
Pentax camera's so I got hold of the distributor and got the KS-2 and K3
sent to a shop for me to look at. I did not even look at the K3 as the
KS-2 fitted in my hands so well. I just feel I have to ask if we are not
tending to knock camera design changes without actually trying them.

Hum, well now where do we put that pesky front wheel? Ah vertically
on the front panel the new replaceable grips will protect it.

Now we have to have some kind of unifying element. This is a break
with the past, we're going to use the new three wheel metaphor from
the K-1 so make the prism/flash look like that.

Maybe later someone said hey that looks like a Nikon. But I doubt
they started out to do that. They just wanted it to look small.
That's what marketing wanted, that's what marketing got.

Having used the K-5 I think that it was an engineering/photographer
centered design. It was as small as it could be while being as big as
it had to be. The same seems to be true of the K-3.

After that the marketers took over design and the K-S1 was the result.

The new current result is the KP. Not as garish as the K-S1 but I see
the same heavy handed design team somewhat chastened, but still there.

Pentax said they learned their lesson with the endless *ist-D
variations that didn't improve anything just made cheaper cameras
using older technology. DS, DL, DS2, DL2, all cut out with the same
cookie cutter.

For a time the engineers took over and the results were an amazing
advancement in technology for Pentax. Right up to the K-7. Then Hoya
took over and the K-5 which was probably the last real Pentax design,
was cheapened and sold for the highest profits possible. Under Ricoh
the K-5II/s fulfilled the promise of the K-5.

But really still good solid usable cameras. What a photographer
want's. Substance over style mostly.

The K-3 was a fantastic camera it impressed even Nikon fanboys, and
you don't get much more rabid than that, it brought back the fn Key to
explicitly change the behavior of the multi function pad, but it also
made a few design decisions that were pretty meaningless such as the
switch that used to control metering pattern become a switch to
control the center locking button on the mode dial.

Ricoh cares about quality but they also care more about marketing and
in the current era their marketers are just as clueless as Pentax's
were. The K-S1 was obviously marketer driven, and it was a failure.
Only a few of it's features, the less harmful and ridiculous ones,
were carried over to the K-S2 and the merger of the K-S line into the
more or less mainstream Pentax cameras line, we're going to see those
influences continue and not for the better, I'm afraid.

I think the K-1 is the last Pentax engineering design. Designed and
built mostly by engineers who are also photographers.

Tue less said about Pentax's previous forays into Mirrorless the
better it seems, even Ricoh want's to shove them down the memory hole.

On 1/26/2017 12:59 PM, John wrote:

I'm curious because I am right-handed and have always (unthinkingly)

G'day all,

Another good sized gallery with some interesting interpretations of the
theme.

My top three are Ann's 'Tulip Blossom' - both simple and elegant; Stan's
'Beach Stone' - sums up the theme well; and Joe's 'Moon and Venus -
that's a stunner!.

Ok, OK - let's have another couple... Bruce's 'Queen Anne's Lace' -
love those shadows and Ken's 'Reeds' - seen it before and it still grabs
me.

You'll find the gallery here:

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery
there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the
gallery, let me know.

Next up: 'World Photo Day - August 19'

Re: Travelling to South Africa ..

2012-07-14 Thread Patrick Nelson

As I live on the outskirts of Johannesburg I suppose I should comment.

As always in a large city there places to avoid and places that time of
day make a big difference. Things to consider are not leaving items in a
car in view, drive with windows closed and car locked to prevent smash
and grab thefts happening. As with anywhere avoid dark places at night
on your own. Transport from the airport I am not familier with as I live
15 minutes away and normally fetch visitors. Most people are either
fetched, hire a car or catch the gautrain (high speed rail link) if it
goes where you need to be. As you did not say where in Johannesburg you
are staying I can't get more specific.

Feel free to contact me off list for more info.

Curious - any safety concerns that I need to be aware of ?

I've never been to South Africa so I don't have pe4sonal experience,
but the Australian Government issues 'Travel Advisories' for visitors
to many countries. The advice for South Africa might help,

especially

the 'Safety and Security' tab.

http://www.smartraveller.gov.au/zw-cgi/view/Advice/South_Africa

Other governments probably issue similar advisories.

US Department of State also posts those:
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1008.html

In addition to those advisories, you may want to check if any
immunization is needed. E.g.:
http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/south-africa.htm

I haven't been there myself, so, I don't know anything beyond this.

I spent a few weeks in South Africa in 1998, so my experience may be out of
date. I stayed there for a few days with a friend who was getting married,
and her family who still lived there. The advice they gave to all their
guests coming in through Johannesburg airport was not to leave the terminal
building except with a pre-booked taxi driver, and not to go with one of the
taxi touts who cruised for business.

While driving me around JB my friend's father adviced me not to rest my arm
on the window - he said I'd have my hand cut off by people trying to get my
watch.

One of their sons was burgled at gunpoint in his home some months
afterwards, and it was generally considered a miracle that he wasn't shot
dead, which was apparently the routine at the time.

So the impression I got was that Jo'burg was not a good place to wander
around naively.

We also spent some time in Cape Town which was much more relaxed and one of
the world's great cities, although even there there was a double-shooting on
the Waterfront one day - we weren't affected by it in any way though.

I have no idea what it's like there now, but I wouldn't hesitate to go back
- it's a wonderful country. You should get some advice from locals.

RE: Macro

2009-04-21 Thread Patrick Nelson
Thanks for the answer. I agree with what you are saying but I think my
question is as follows. Assuming I needed 1:1 to fill the frame on film with
a specific subject I would obviously need to back off a bit and a lower
magnification to fill the frame on digital with the same subject. I would
now be working at less than life size would I not? Is this difference also a
factor of 1.5 like on telephoto?

 Hi

I have a question arround the magnification factors on macro lenses. If
 you
use a 1:1 lense on film the image is life size on the negative. What does
this translate to on an aps-c size sensor 1.5:1 ?. I use the a100 f4 macro
which is 1:2 would this then translate to 0.75:1 or 3 quarters life size.
 I
know that as I am not doing any measurements on the resulting image and
 use
the lense as the size and framing I want it is imaterial. I wouls however
 like to know.

Life size is life size.
35mm film sees more real estate than APS-C.
