Re: OT Mac help

2024-05-15 Thread paul stenquist
Hi Dave,

You might have a format problem with the older drives. If there’s enough free
space on one to hold all the files, you might want to move them over and
reformat the empty drive. Then, repeat with the other drive. Or simply by a
hard rive of 2T or more and move the files to that drive, then reformat the
empty drives.

PESOs: Backyard Birds

2024-04-29 Thread paul stenquist
Finally getting back to shooting a few birds. A nice morning here, so I sat
outside for a bit. The pair of Cardinals are either expecting or doing amazing
ritual, but the male has a seed that he will give to the female. The last one
is a white throated sparrow. I only see these in spring. I think they go
further north for the summer.

Re: Problems reading SD cards

2024-02-22 Thread Paul Sorenson
Since Win7 was working for you have you considered backing everything up
and re-installing Win7?  If all you use that computer for is photo
processing there shouldn't be a lot of software to re-install.

OTOH, if you have a computer running (or able to run) Win10, Win10 has a
compatibility mode that you can activate that allows you to run aged
games and software.

have all of my images copied off of the memory cards onto the computer

Part of the reason for this is the default for Pentax Raw files is
"IMGP" and a couple of my cameras have rolled over past and
the K-1 numbering was reset when I had to send it in for repair after
I fell & yanked the screen off the back.

So it's K10D-1, K20D-0, K-3-0 & K-1-1 ... I pretty
much kept up with it WHILE I was downloading images from the camera up
until Covid (when I got lazy and sometimes wouldn't download the
images for months after I took them)

ANYWAY - The K-3 has been giving me fits downloading images today.
Adobe Bridge "get media" seems to fail after pulling down about 8
images. I'm having the same problem directly copying from the card to
the computer - 8 images & an error.

When the error comes Windoze says the DCIM folder is empty & can't
even see the card to eject it. If I just pull the card reader out &
plug it in again the sub-folders are still there in DCIM and I can go
into the sub-folder and copy images manually ... but if I select more
than 8 at a time it's going to have the same error copying.

If I just select 8 images they seem to copy fine and then I can select
8 more and they'll copy, but rarely works for a third batch of 8.
Repeat remove & reinsert & select the next 8 ...

I only had the problem with the K-3 cards - 2-32GB Sandisk Extreme
SDHC and 1-32GB Sandisk Ultra SDXC.

I'm pretty sure I only lost a single image to corruption. Sucks, but
at least it's not worse. I copied all the images over to my file server.

I don't know if it's the camera, the cards, the card reader or the
computer. I hope it's not the computer because it's Windows 7 &
Photoshop CS6 Extended (which I don't think will run on Windoze 10 &
Windoze 10 definitely would not install on this computer (I shall not
repeat my previous rant about the attempt to install Windows 10 ...)

I'll shut the Photoshop computer down tomorrow, open it up & give it a
good cleaning inside & see where we go from here.

Re: Thumb drive fart under pressure

2024-01-31 Thread Paul Sorenson
For the most compatibility across operating systems FAT32 file system is
your best bet.  It does have a couple limitations - a max file size 4 GB
and a max partition size of 8TB.  These limitations are not usually a
problem with a flash drive unless you're trying to save something like a
movie.

FAT16 is so old it's pretty much dead in the water and NTFS, standard
for Windows machines, can be both read and write to Windows, but read
only for MACs.  EX FAT eliminates the file size and partition size
limitations of FAT32 but is somewhat less compatible machine/system-wise.

Assuming you don't have any files larger than 4GB, if you have two flash
drives, format one to FAT32 and the other to EX-FAT.  Put your files on
both of them and see which works in the class machines.

Beautiful car - great shot.  The dealer had one in the show room when I

523 - Beechcraft 18 (commonly called a Twin Beech)

This album is fighters, attack planes, trainers, observation & recon and
related.

We did luck out and the skies cooperated, so some of the photos actually turned
out pretty nice.

I had my 18-270 on the K-3iii and my Irix 11/4 on my K-1. In retrospect I
would have been better off with the 15-30 on the K-1, though it was rather fun
shooting with the superwide and just needing to remember to adjust the

In honor of Dan, I started off with the F4s.

I was able to ID most of the planes in this album. Some unidentified ones are:

It’s a cage but well hidden. The owner is an amazing craftsman. Built it from a
wreck of a C-code ‘’65. It’s a road racer and cruiser. 575 horsepower all
aluminum stroked Dart 302. 365 cid, 575 horsepower, 5-speed Tremac, beautiful
aftermarket suspension. Owner says it handles like a go-kart. He just runs
track days. It’s the owner’s vision of an improved Shelby 350 GTR.

I will render a “before” with normal conversion but no haze filter when I have

;No offense taken. But I do like the results at 4800. And with a 35mm

some adjustment. Here’s a full res scan of a 50 year old BW negative that I

Re: Slide scanners

2023-05-01 Thread Paul Stenquist
I scan slides on my Epson V850 Pro flatbed scanner. It has slide holders that
position the slides correctly and hold about a dozen at a time. I find that
automating slide scanning isn’t very efficient as exposures vary. I have the
same storage as you: binders with slide holder pages. But i scan only the best
and others as needed. Scanning all seems a formidable task, given that you’ll
also have to render each scan to get an excellent result. The epson will scan
them at 4900 dpi native, generating very nice hi-kres files.

when a local photographer posted that she was looking for models for a project for her
photography class. We had a fun photoshoot last weekend, and that also got me to pull
out the lights and do some selfie work in "the studio".

My favorite is this nude, from the back. If there had been an actual
photographer guiding my pose I think it could have put my figure in a better
light, by better using the light, but even so, I think it works:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/52820141685/in/album-72177720307520597/

C, as always, are appreciated.

For those that are interested, here's a bunch of the artsier photos. Laura wanted to use
my "costume" axe in some of the photos, so in the selfies, I tried some with
it, and also a couple of my swords. She let me have the raw files from her shoot, and
also gave me her finished JPEGS. Her photos were all taken outdoors, mine indoors so
it's easy to tell who the photographer is with each. I think it's also easy to tell who
processed which ones, we have very different aesthetics.
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720307520597

Again, the difference in processing is apparent in the regular portraits she
took:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720307534794

I suck as a model, particularly in selfies if I don't have someone else to bring out an
"honest" smile.

I'm nearly as bad at judging which photos of me are flattering. I'll try to
get some feedback from these and put together a smaller album.

PESO: Snowdrop

2023-03-21 Thread Paul Stenquist
I had despaired of getting my snowdrop pic this year. The plants were buried in
snow, and a tree fell atop them in the last storm. But the tree has been
cleared and the snow melted, so I managed somewhat of a pic. Not my best
snowdrop, but at least I keep my string of about twenty years alive. K-1 with
the DFA 100/2.8 macro.

I have a Kensington Expert Mouse on my work computer; it has a huge trackball,

Other suggestions?

Re: Fun in the rain

2023-01-10 Thread Paul Sorenson

Larry -

Glad to see/hear you're OK so far.  Is your house set back from the
river a little more than some of those on the other side?  Felton was
specifically mentioned in articles on CA flooding in our local Milwaukee
paper today.  Our son and his family live about 15 miles from SLO and
have been out of power for over 24 hours.

Good to see first hand pix of what's happening our there - keep 'em
coming - but more importantly, keep safe.

I actually did use my Pentaxes to get some photos of the weather fun we've been
having. I used my K-3 and 16-50 back on New Years Eve, then mostly played with
my Irix 11/4 today after last night's rains. The funny thing is that I had
taken a fair number of photos before I realized that I had put it on my K-3
rather than my K-1, so I went back, swapped bodies (I often wish I could do
that with my own body) and then got some real wide angle photos.

If a few of the photos you can see my home made depth gauge. The photos at the
end of the set show the river after it had dropped to 16 feet, a little deeper
than it got on the 31st. At its deepest this morning I think it was a bit over
18' deep.
Granted, that's 18' over the portion of the river bed that is usually not under
water, the normal channel is maybe 1/3-1/2 as wide as it is when it goes cliff
to cliff.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellarsee/albums/72177720305120476

Like a fool, I figured that today was going to be nice and dry, and while they
need to do some work on 17 on the side heading home, they'll be long done with
that before I need to go home. It turns out they finished a bit before 10PM, I
had to take some back roads, with mud from slides, missing pavement, and some
trees here and there, but I got home even it took me an hour and 15 minutes
rather than 45.

We're supposed to get another nice big storm tonight, and I'm planning on
working from home tomorrow.

My sharpest lens may be the D FA 70-200/2.8, or it might be the K 28/3.5. Hard
to say definitively. But I know which one is more expensive! And heavier.

I turned to Pentax many years ago because I had some screw mount lenses. This

Re: September PUG is up - Again....

2022-09-08 Thread Paul Sorenson

Thanks to all for looking, liking and commenting on my "jetty".

Of all the definitions I found, the most popular was an object extending
into the water to create a harbor. In my defense, however, a couple
secondary definitions called it an object extending from the shore into
the water for the purpose of fishing and/or tying up a boat.

In any case, thanks for the positive comments and the lively discussion.

I didn't see (either) Paul ask about a pier vs a jetty  but I had been
bothered by that as well..
which is partly why I gave up trying to find a Pentax taken shot for
this month.. and
the one shot I had (that would have been a repeat PUG submission ) was
only a pier... ;-)

With Ralf's image, that makes 14, a rather respectable gallery.

To answer Paul's question, no, a pier is not a jetty.  Still, his Avila
Pier is my favorite image of the month.  Strong perspective, nice
patterns

and textures, and a definite mood.  I also really like Misty, by Patrick
Nelson;  a fine, moody, minimalist image.  I think the long light pole,
jutting out from the main object of attention, really makes this shot
special.
