Re: Devil's Punchbowl

2024-05-24 Thread Rick Womer
Larry, there are some really nice photos here.

For me, though, the many near-duplicate images dilutes the impact of the whole
set—for example, were 11 similar shots of the raven and 8 of the eagle really
necessary to post?

Pittsburgh

2024-05-13 Thread Rick Womer
We took a short trip to Pittsburgh last month, and were able to enjoy this
pleasant city in beautiful weather.

The city is where the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers join to form the Ohio
River, which flows west to the Mississippi River. My family had driven through
Pittsburgh when I was a child, and I remember smoke and steel mills. Now only
one steel mill remains, the smoke is gone, and the city is prosperous.

The views are excellent from Mount Washington, an escarpment south of the
downtown area, served by two pairs of antique funicular rail cars (we went up
and down the Duquesne Incline; the other (Monangahela Incline, about a mile
away) was closed.

The visible bridges are among 446 in Pittsburgh, the most of any city in the
world (and 3x the number in Venice).

The bronze figure on the bench, “Sidewalk Judge,” is by Seward Johnson, an heir
to the Johnson & Johnson fortune and an artist.

Lightroom Classic + Sonoma upgrades = Trouble (still)

2024-03-03 Thread Rick Womer
I have been using Lightroom since 2005, and it has worked well. There are
over 50,000 photos in my library. Last week I upgraded the Mac OS to Sonoma
14.1.2, and upgraded LrC to 13.1.

All hell broke loose. Since the upgrades LrC simply doesn't work: opening a
library opens only a fraction of the photos it contains, and those cannot
be edited. When I try to import new photos from an SD card, LrC re-imports
existing photos from the catalog along with some of the new ones; and once
they're "imported" neither I nor the Finder can't find them.

I removed LrC 13.1 and re-installed it, but the problem persists. Disk
Utility finds no problems, and my other apps are running without problems.

Advice that leads to restoring a usable LrC will be greatly appreciated.

Thumb drive fart under pressure

2024-01-30 Thread Rick Womer
I’m taking a photography course at the Fleisher Art Memorial here in Philly.

As per our first assignment last week, I brought in ten .jpg images on an
MS-DOS-formatted flash drive, as did my classmates.

Three different MS-DOS computers in the classroom did not recognize my flash
drive =at all=.

I don’t know what computers my 8 classmates use, but none of them had a problem.

Any ideas?

Wow!

My favorites of this =excellent= collection:

- The house fronts reflected in the water ( # 75? A more viewer-friendly
numbering scheme would be nice.)
- The houses fronting on the canal, with reflections (#60)
- The roomful of bottles of beer,
- The church front (last shot)

We really like Brugges, but my photos weren’t nearly this good!

System damage from surge--still struggling

2023-12-20 Thread Rick Womer
Well, I have the Mac OS working again, and Lightroom Classic opens… but I can’t
get it to open my catalog.

I have spent =many= hours struggling with this, and I need professional help
(much more of this stuff and I’ll need psychiatric help as well as cyber help).

How does one search for a cyber-professional familiar with Macs and Adobe apps?
A Google search yields dozens of consultants for Apple and Adobe products in
greater Philly, but they’re all oriented toward business systems and big
projects.

Any suggestions?

Headphone query (waaaay off-topic, I know)

2023-12-12 Thread Rick Womer
One of my non-photographic passions is listening to classical music.

I have a pair of Sennheiser PXC 550 II headphones that I like a lot, usually
playing recordings stored on my iPhone.

I learned that Sennheiser had "upgraded" its software from the
venerable-but-versatile Captune to Smart Control. I installed Smart Control on
my phone.

Big mistake. With all but the latest headphones, Smart Control is stupid
compared to Captune, able to do nothing but select a recording, start, stop,
and change the volume. Most annoying is the absence of a graphic equalizer,
which I used a lot with Smart Control.

I emailed Sennheiser customer support, and their response was basically “Suck
it up, sucker!”

Sooo…

Can anyone recommend an iPhone music player app with a graphic equalizer,
compatible with my headphones?

Re: Let's test the list!

2023-12-07 Thread Rick Womer
I don't know about the server gods, but some gods somewhere weren't happy
with my photo computer .

On the night of November 13 it seems that our house had a massive power
surge. The victims were (1) my photo computer setup, consisting of a Mac
Mini and two on-line OWC hard drives. A few days later we learned that the
control circuit board and some of the wiring for our house's minisplit
AC/heating system were partially melted (we are now using our hot water
heating system).

We're waiting for a new circuit board and valves for the minisplit system,
and I've been chipping away at the computer problems. The OS on the Mac
needs replacing, and both external drives have media and file system errors
on Disk Utility which are making them flaky.

So, in the midst of other activities, I've been chipping away at the
problem. I'm shifting files from two other external hard drives (which
aren't in daily use) so that I can shift my files off the damaged drives
and reformat them.

Then I'll be able to transfer a bunch of files, reformat the external
drives they were on, transfer files back, and hope that Lightroom
cooperates in getting everything accessible.

Stay tuned.

Computers! Aargh!

2023-11-14 Thread Rick Womer
I’ve accumulated a lot of photos recently, from travel and walks through groves
of autumn color.

Today I sat down to post some. But…

When I launched Lightroom the window that should have displayed the photos was
blank. Both my primary and secondary external hard drives had errors that Disk
Utility couldn’t fix. I have no idea why.

Not sure how to approach this yet, but I will likely spend several more hours
sorting things out.

Sometimes I really miss film, a light box, and a loupe.

GESO - Mercer Museum

2023-09-09 Thread Rick Womer
Yesterday we took a trip to Doylestown, a well-preserved town incorporated in
1838, about an hour west of Philly.

Among its assets is the Mercer Museum, established by Henry Mercer in 1916, and
filled with his (very idiosyncratic) collection of tools, baskets, decorative
tiles, stoves, carriages, dolls, pottery, and a fire engine, The exhibits are
very haphazard and not very well labelled or annotated, but it is a very
interesting place nonetheless.

So, herewith a haphazard collection of photos:

LrC and travel

2023-07-26 Thread Rick Womer
I have Lightroom Classic running on this here Mac mini, with my photos on
external hard drives.

We’re going to be doing some traveling, and I’d like to have LR on my MacBook
Pro. There is loads of room on its internal drive.

What flavor of LR should I install on my laptop that won’t insist on using the
cloud? Will Adobe allow me to download another copy of LrC?

Their website is completely un-helpful, alas.

GESO - Walk Along Kelly Drive

2023-07-24 Thread Rick Womer
Kelly Drive is a curving, pleasant road (except for a few would-be Formula-1
race-car drivers) that follows the east bank of the Schuylkill River through
Philadelphia. It has a nice foot/bicycle path, that we followed a couple of
mornings ago.

Rowing and racing 8-person shells on the river is a Big Thing, and the
boathouses in the first three pics house the clubs that constitute the
“Schuylkill Navy.” The shells are mostly on racks next to the buildings (as in
the second photo), though some of the clubs have boathouses capable of storing
the craft.

The last five pics are other things that caught my eye on the way.

GESOs - Woodmere

2023-07-21 Thread Rick Womer
Woodmere is another 19th century mansion on the northwestern outskirts of
Philly. In the late1800s a wealthy businessman bought the mansion to create a
gallery to show his 9000-item art collection.

We took a trip up there in June, and it was very enjoyable. Herewith two
galleries:

- a few shots of the galleries:
https://rickwomer.smugmug.com/2023/June-2023/Woodmere-6-23/Woodmere/

- a few shots of a remarkably detailed doll house. The realism and detail
amazed me:

GESO - Cliveden Mansion

2023-07-19 Thread Rick Womer
Cliveden is a mansion in the Mount Airy section of Philadelphia, built in the
1760s, and home to seven generations of the Chew family. The house and
surrounding fields were the site of the Battle of Germantown during the
Revolutionary War. The National Trust for Historic Preservation now owns and
operates it as a museum and research center.

These are photos of the interior. Pouring rain and sodden ground discouraged me
from photographing the impressive grounds and gardens.

All were taken with my K-5 and DA 17-70. The ISO was 3200; the new Denoise is
Lightroom is amazing.

Re: Angry glitz chicken

2023-07-04 Thread Rick Womer
Larry, I like these pics! I’ve never seen peacocks this close-up, and so
haven’t appreciated the details of their colors.

The exposure is tricky, as the bird is dark-colored and there is dappled
sunlight. I imagine that you already did what you could with the exposure
sliders in LR.

A friend suggested using the “dehaze” slider for scenes with uneven exposure,
and that tool has become one of my faves.

GESO - Philly Art Museum, Outside

2023-07-04 Thread Rick Womer
A photo-friend and I took a walk around the museum last week. It stands on a
hill next to the Schuylkill River, on the site of Philly’s first public water
reservoir (circa 1815). The dam was built in 1821, and powered pumps via
waterwheels to replace unreliable steam engines. The Art Museum building opened
in 1928, replacing a much smaller building a few miles away in Fairmount Park.

GESO - 30th St. Station

2023-07-02 Thread Rick Womer
I haven’t posted in a long time, but I’ve been taking lots of photos. Three of
us who took a photo workshop at a local art school last year have been taking a
photo walk together every couple of months, and then gathering to view and
comment on each others’ work a few weeks later.

A recent outing was to 30th St. Station, Philadelphia’s still-busy train
station. Here are some of my shots from that outing:

https://rickwomer.smugmug.com/2023/30th-Street-Station/

In the first pic, the glass-roofed bridge-like structure serves the commuter
rail lines. The more solid structure on the right is the “real” station. The
tracks for the Amtrak trains are below its floor.

Inter-city trains are below the station; the people emerging from the escalator

Slide scanners

I’d like to start digitizing some of my 35mm slides.

There are about a dozen slide-and-film scanners on Amazon, with prices ranging

Any recommendations or warnings?

Thanks for posting this, Bruce.

Somerville is only 1 1/2 or 2 hours from Philly (depending on traffic), but we
never managed to get together. He was indeed always kind and helpful on PDML

Broad Street Photo-Walk

2023-05-03 Thread Rick Womer
A couple of weeks ago two photo-friends and I took a walk down Broad Street,
Philadelphia’s largest north-south street. We began at City Hall (beneath which
the subway lines have stations), and walked about 2.5 km/1.6 mi south, and then
north again on the other side of the street.

I spent electrons with reckless abandon, so here are links to my six favorite
shots:

The front of the Union League:
https://rickwomer.smugmug.com/2023/April-2023/Broad-Street-Walk/i-dxZpKRt/A

Window washing:
https://rickwomer.smugmug.com/2023/April-2023/Broad-Street-Walk/i-DKd57hD/A

The most elaborate mural of the walk:
https://rickwomer.smugmug.com/2023/April-2023/Broad-Street-Walk/i-dL7rRSX/A

Subway entrance:

Creative and Performing Arts High School:
https://rickwomer.smugmug.com/2023/April-2023/Broad-Street-Walk/i-CrSSxxW/A

Looking north to City Hall (statue of William Penn on top):

GESO (9) - Penn Campus Magnolias

2023-04-03 Thread Rick Womer
Friday afternoon had perfect weather, and we walked over to the Penn campus.
The main quad’s magnolias were in full bloom.

https://rickwomer.smugmug.com/2023/March-2023/Penn-Campus-Magnolias/

After a windy weekend, things weren’t as pretty today.

There is a refreshing Monty Python flavo(u)r to this—the shop assistant and
John Cleese are behaviorally very similar.

I may not have been clear. Your message header has Comcast as your name. One
has to click on Comcast to see that it’s really you. Some peoples’ spam filters
might discard a message without offering a chance to do that.

For me, the list has been a friendly place where I can see good photography,
and get comments on mine from people I respect. I would like to see more posts
from more people too, but I’m not ready to leave. Where would I go?

Bob, pics of Spitalfields on line look considerably more up-market that the
place was when we lived in London 40 years ago (Egad! That long!). There’s also
no market in Old City that compares with the current Spitalfields market. Old
City is very compact, about 1/4 mi north-south and east-west, and ranges from
run-down to fairly pricey in that small space.

Hoping to get over to London again some day…

Re: GESO - Fences and Shadows

2023-03-21 Thread Rick Womer
Thanks, Ann!

The last shot is of “The Bowl” in Clark Park. To make a long and complicated
history short, Mill Creek used to flow through it on its way to the Schuylkill
River, about a half-mile farther along. There were docks where barges were
unloaded, and during the Civil War wounded soldiers were also brought here by
barge, as the Satterlee Hospital was about 100 yards to the north.

Generations of city employees have tried to get grass to grow in The Bowl, but
it is lousy clay soil and is heavily used so all efforts have failed except on
the slopes. The Bowl is used for dogs, sledding (when there is snow—not this
winter!), a youth soccer league, and plays and concerts in the summer.

Re: Hi kids!

2023-03-16 Thread Rick Womer
Welcome back Mark!

The only change here is that fewer people are posting and commenting. Sigh.

My condolences to Lisa. The last time I saw her was at a pre-pandemic COG
meeting—seems like a time warp ago.

Mouse/trackball question

2023-03-14 Thread Rick Womer
I have been using a Logitech trackball for my photo computer for years, and it
is wearing out. It has a red ball operated by one’s right thumb, and a vertical
scroll wheel and two buttons operated by index and second fingers.

What should I replace it with?

I have a Kensington Expert Mouse on my work computer; it has a huge trackball,
four buttons, and a scroll wheel surrounding the track ball. I tried it on the
photo computer and it was awkward.

Other suggestions?

Rick
