Sad to hear of Dan's passing, I loved the shots he shared years ago
from his time in service, an impressive fellow indeed.

Re: How large is too large...

2023-02-17 Thread Rob Studdert
Late to the thread, my main LR classic catalogue currently shows 689k
images, I prefer it this way as I'm regularly needing to revisit
previous edits and I shoot a lot of recurring jobs. I have no problems
with speed during use, though it resides on a fast SSD (7GB/s), the
problem is that with previews the cat occupes 143GB of storage space,
it also takes a long time to check/compact and back-up the cat and
when I revisit old folders where the previews have been purged already
it can hang for a little.

PESO Astro pano

2022-11-26 Thread Rob Studdert
Hi Team,

Just popped my head in to see what everyone is up to. Not shooting my
Pentax kit much at the moment but I did get away with it on a short
holiday a couple of weeks back. I did some night shooting which I
haven't done for years, I think it worked out nicely but it's
inherently a dark image which doesn't suit social media presentation
at all well.

It's a five vertical shot cylindrical stitch, there were more source
images by LR could manage to work out how they fit together, I may
revisit the edit using Hugin to stitch all the images but it's way
more effort than I am prepared for at the moment. Hope you enjoy.

Re: Ricoh direct marketing cue wailing and moaning and gnashing of teeth

2022-01-20 Thread Rob Studdert
Australia may have been a testbed of sorts, there's now virtually no
Pentax to be seen at bricks mortar stores or their on-lline portals.
For some years they have been selling direct and they have an agent on
eBay that often undercuts the buy price of retailers (product is
direct shipped from the importers CRK). As a consequence they have
largely faded into obscurity here.

Hi Larry,

Yes it wasn't the day I would have picked, some colour in the sky

PESO The Rocks

2022-01-20 Thread Rob Studdert
Hi Team,

I was in the city shooting façades for a client last month and I took
the opportunity to grab a quick shot for myself (have hardly shot
anything for myself in the last two years).

The image was shot using my pano head with the vertical angle set to
optimise the balance between the road and the tops of the buildings.
It's a 3 shot x 12 HDR sequence, all assembled in LR using the HDR
panorama option. I then used the guided transform tool to set my main
verticals and rotation.

I had a cut down kit with me which meant that I had to set the tripod
level by adjusting the leg lengths so it's not quite right, I left the
image uncropped to display the overlap/stitching (and my levelling
error).

Re: PESO - PanESO - Grand Teton

2022-01-20 Thread Rob Studdert
Hi Igor,

I'm not sure that PS has the same size limitations as LR, the way LR
works is it produces a composite DNG so I think that the issue is
mainly a limit on the RAW/DNG engine (one of my friends is on the LR
dev team so I will ask out of interest). Pano prints are amazing :)

I think my images are hidden from the public, I have to share a direct
link for them to be visible.

I have a pano head but if I'm shooting hand held or just off a
conventional head I tend to overlap by 50%. This typically makes it
easy for the stitcher and it's easy to set by eye, you just place what
was at the edge of the frame in the centre on the subsequent exposure.

Cheers,

Rob

Re: PESO - PanESO - Grand Teton

2022-01-14 Thread Rob Studdert
Nice work Igor, what software did you use to stitch the images? I know
that LR, though quite capable and by far the best option to assemble
RAW image files, does currently have a maximum pixel dimension
(vertically or horizontally) of around 65000px and a maximum overall
size of 500Mpx total therefore limiting the max image size to around
64000x8000px.

I did see that original post re-hosting panoramic images but forgot to
reply. It is difficult to display them in a meaningful way on-line,
the most practical option I found was the Gigapan site. It's a little
long in the tooth, clunky and seems to be fairly niche these days but
it does still work, I put four images up about 5 years back and they
still appear to be accessible.

I did manage it in Chrome, not too difficult, open the menu item "More
tools" then "Developer tools" then there's a screen type toggle at the
top of the console, there's even a list of mobile emulations to choose
from.

Re: GESO Leura Gardens Festival 2019

Hi Paul, I'm glad it brightened up your day. It's quite surreal here
today, the smoke is so thick over Sydney that the sun is rendered a
deep red, it feels like we're living in a Sci-Fi movie.

HI Brian, You should do it (assuming that it's not all cinders by
then), some of the gardens were as good as I've seen in Europe. The
Waratahs were almost perfect samples, very impressive.

Cheers,

Re: GESO Leura Gardens Festival 2019

2019-12-02 Thread Rob Studdert
Hi Rick, Glad you liked them, I know that gardens aren't everyone's
cup of tea but this lot were pretty spectacular, I'm aiming to get a
preview before the crowds next year if I can manage it, then I could
really go to town.

Hi Ann, Thanks, given how the FB god stuff with the view algorithms
I'm not at all surprised that you missed them.

Hi Cotty, LOL, no nekkid ladies in this lot, I think you might have
mistaken me for someone else with a 645z ;) I have a nice Nikon work
kit now, no Nikkor glass though, it's all Tarom zooms and Sigma
primes, I certainly can't complain. So butcher as many NIkkors as you
like :)

Hi Pete, Glad you liked them, there's a big bushfire front way too
close at the moment, I think everyone is just crossing their fingers,
I saw a shot from last night at Echo Point looking over the Three
Sisters and there's just a wall of fire behind, very sad.

Cheers,

Larry it's definitely a pain to share pics that don't originate from
the phone cam or the app directly, they really don't want desktop
access so that's why most solutions end up failing, not quite sure of
the rationale there. That said I don't find it too onerous, I just
have an IG folder in Dropbox which I pre-load from my desktop then
export to IG from the DB phone app.

Hi Guys,

I don't get much time to pop in here these days, I'm still shooting
Pentax regularly but most of my work is done using Nikon gear these
days.

If you are into gardens I shot this set of images recently, all hand
held using the 645z and superb 28-45 zoom, PP in LR, I did post this

The challenge of the day was not to capture 50+ random people in each

Re: What are the advantages of ransomware Lightroom? Also copying off an external drive

2019-12-01 Thread Rob Studdert
I'm late to the party but I'll chime in, much like Doug my income is
highly variable these days (photography being what it is) but still I
value the work-flow inherent in LR enough to submit to their
ransom-ware tactics (which I loathe). I stay within LR for most of my
edits if possible and venture out to PS only when absolutely
necessary, all my images are accessible via a single catalogue (as I
am regularly required to delve into past shoots) and it's currently
sitting at just shy of 600k images without a hitch.

In the last year I've also been running an Xtouch Mini MIDI mixer via
MIDI2LR to facilitate direct control of my major adjustments and image
selection and this has significantly increased the pace of my
work-flow when managing larger shoots.

Re: The Dog & Pony Show

They need to review their MF lens line-up as people are leaving the
645 line for the new boys on the block. I've now sold the majority of
my K-mount kit, it's quite refreshing not to constrained however my
new kit is quite limited in scope and will remain so for the
foreseeable future, it's doing what I need it to (and many of those
things Pentax kit simply can't at the moment).

Re: Strobes, studio and students

I've used generic Yonguo RF-602 Radio triggers in group shoots, the
spill from the adjacent strobes would end up triggering the all the
others regardless of the lengths taken to shield the sensors. I keep a
couple of sets in my kit as the Elinchrom Skyports aren't always
reliable.

Re: Sounds like Pentax/Ricoh's resources are spread pretty thin...

2018-04-10 Thread Rob Studdert
Mine is up on eBay at the moment (reluctantly), it's a gorgeous lens,
better than the FA* version but its AF sucks and I need AF these days
so it's more a lovely curio for me. Given its status as a collectors
piece and the condition of my copy I've put a premium on it, if I get
no bites I get to keep it.

That's basically what I do, my pano rig is now optimised for use with
the HD35, I'm then not limited if the vista is relatively static. The
28-45 is too long for my pano rig, I don't have enough adjustment in
it to find the lenses nodal point.

Re: K1-II spec leaked, seems like minor improvements only

2018-02-17 Thread Rob Studdert
Yeah that would work, the action is there then gone quickly too giving
the buffer time to refresh. A lot of my shoots are pretty intense,
dance, fire and music shows. The fire stuff is over pretty quickly and
you need to overshoot to get a few decent frames it's happening so
fast. A lot of music pr teams now only give you the first three songs
and for some reason often poor lighting really limiting opportunities
during the allotted press time.

Re: K1-II spec leaked, seems like minor improvements only

2018-02-17 Thread Rob Studdert
The K1 to me is an ideal portrait/landscape camera, not so great for
events, the fact that they managed to deliver the trio of pro-spec
zooms at launch was admirable but they seem a miss match for the body.

A couple of high quality portable primes (the 15-30 is a great lens, I
have the Tamron version but it's huge and weighty) to satisfy
traditional landscape and portrait shooters should have at least
closely followed the launch of the three f2.8 zoom lenses IMO.

I needed a new solution to cover my events shooting with better speed
and low light performance (was previously using K3/K3/K5iis
combination) but I knew that the K1 buffer would limit its usefulness
to me so I finally jumped ship. I would have stuck around for another
5 plus years on top of my 30 or so if they had produced a K3/ii
replacement in a timely fashion.

The K5IIs actually made the K5 useful, I'm still using my mK5IIs, my
pair of K5 bodies are long gone, their focus speed/accuracy in low
light was appalling. If these specs are true it's really offering a
very very limited advantage over the original K1.

We have just come back from 11 days in Tassie, nice spot, a bit like a
smaller version of NZ with less snow LOL

I'm still editing from December, at one point I shot 10 shows in as
many days, about 20k images all up.

Cheers,

Re: Road trip storage

2017-12-13 Thread Rob Studdert
I have big cards but also one of these,
https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1244324-REG/wd_wdbp2p0020bbk_nesn_2tb_my_passport_wireless.html

It will copy your card to the drive without need for any additional
equipment and will also double up as a 5v USB charging port for phones
etc.

Thanks Rick, har, generally mics aren't a problem as I use centre
point focus and AF-S with BBF, auto-ranging AF rarely gets it right :)

Very nice, I saw that it was about 640mm, on crop I assume? TAv is my
go-to mode for a lot of my shooting these days too, riding the ISO
isn't as problematic as it once was.

Re: PESO a pre-gig shot

2017-11-08 Thread Rob Studdert
Thanks for all the comments, it's an interesting juxtaposition when an
image like this is put beside the images shot when the musicians hit
the stage. Prior it's a still life
but as soon as the performers hit the stage the focus shifts to almost
entirely to facial expressions, though essentially all shooting
parameters remain the same.

PESO a pre-gig shot

2017-11-07 Thread Rob Studdert
Hi Team,

Ann caught one of my recent images on FB and suggested that I should
post it as a PESO, not being one to argue and being one of Ann's many
admirers the image in question follows.

I have been dribbling out images that I call my pre-gig pics, they are
incidental images shot whilst checking my gear before shows start, I
think some stand on their own reasonably well.

dance and other live performance, my RAW library is approaching 450k
images but that's less than I've shot as I have started outright
discarding images that I know will not be used in any way.

Hi Team,

Just popping my head in whilst coming up for air.

This a pic from a current edit that I'm in the middle of, its a live
shot from a show called Red Light Confidential that I've shot for the

something interesting to shoot, the light wasn't bad this night
either, though it's not always that way.

Re: K-5 20K

2017-10-31 Thread Rob Studdert
Thanks Rick, I do give my cameras quite a workout, my main K3 is just
past 225k shots I think, my just new D750 has about 20k shots on it
already.

Time is difficult to juggle at the moment, I don't get enough time to
do things that I really need to so I only have time to pop in here
once in a while :(

All those shots come with consequences, I'm steadily working my way
through a backlog of shoots, so not much time to post anywhere and
less time to do my own thing.

One day I'll get it under control :)

Re: K-1 grumbles

2017-10-20 Thread Rob Studdert
The buffer issue is partly why I bought a D750 instead of a K1,
there's plenty to love about the K1 but AF and buffer depth aren't on
the list.

The D750 has a buffer depth count-back that lest you know as you're
shooting how many shots you have left in the buffer, not that it's
really a problem as it clears so fast. But the point is the Nikon
recognises the buffer clearing to be an important aspect of camera
performance so much so that they built an indicator so you always know
here you are rather than being literally left in the dark.

The D750 isn't as capable of achieving AF lock in really low light but
it's so good in other ways that I'll forgive it.

Re: Stuck Battery In Pentax Q

2017-06-02 Thread Rob Studdert
Ouch, you're between a rock and a hard place there. If it was me I
would take the brutal approach, the battery is toast so I would opt to
destroy the battery however there is a danger to it. If you open the
battery and it gets sufficient oxygen even if discharged it can
spontaneously combust (burn, not generally explode if there is a
vent).

I would take it outside and bring a drill, electric screw driver, a
screw with good deep thread, a pair of robust pliers and a drill bit
slightly smaller than the screw. Drill into the battery, quickly screw
the screw in and yank the lot out. Otherwise send it in for service
(where they would very likely do exactly the same thing).

I must say that I couldn't image shooting an EVF in studio, the 645
works really well for that, I'd love a good low light EVF based camera
for some of my more quiet live performance jobs but for now I just get
by with the RX100.

I still have three scanners, LS8000 for roll film, V700 for generating
contact sheets, rough scans and 4x5+. For 35mm film stocks I use a
dedicated 35mm scanner which is optimised for the task, it's a Konica
Minolta DiMAGE Scan Elite 5400 II, it's the bee's knees, that said any
scanning is a PITA. If you throw good $$$ at a decent scanner it's
pretty easy to get similar money back when you're done, cheap rental
really.

Re: GESO Art Party All Stars Sydney Finale!

2017-02-24 Thread Rob Studdert
Thanks Bruce, it was, everything happens there, drama, live reading,
spoken word, music, poetry, burlesque, fire, I've seen it all there.
Sadly that's the last one for Sydney, it ran for four years monthly, I
covered 11 of the events including two anniversary editions that were
pretty epic. The problem is venues are difficult to find, that place
is a studio during the day, you can see the two wall cyclorama in the
background and they risk losing their main business if the council
finds out that they are using it for a performance space. The little
venues are being squeezed out due to lock-out laws and
redevelopment/gentrification.

GESO Art Party All Stars Sydney Finale!

2017-02-24 Thread Rob Studdert
Hi Guys,

I don't get much time to hang out here these days but I'm still
shooting Pentax for the moment, two K3's and a K5iis. The following
gallery is an example of one of the types of events I shoot these days
(for those not on FB). There are shots in there for the producers, the
artists and the audience, many of the audience are performers
themselves so it's an interesting gig to shoot.

Typically the light is pretty poor and mixed, I just generally wind up
the ISO and get on with it. Some shows I'm rarely below ISO3200 and
occasionally up to ISO26500. I work with a pair of cameras, one fitted
with a long zoom and one with a short one, that way I don't have to
swap lenses during pieces and I can grab the other camera when I have
run out of buffer, which happens pretty regularly.

There are some stitched panos at the end for a broader horizontal FOV,
all shot hand held and stitched in LR6. Logos and copyright notice are
all pre-programmed for particular events and are automatically applied
on export direct to Dropbox, Clients all have their own Dropbox root
folder.
