G'day Dave (and everyone else on the PDML). I've been lurking but not posting as I have not been doing much in the way of photography lately. While I wasn't expecting it being available locally yet, I found it disturbing that the rep seems unsure if it will even be imported at this stage. I already knew that I could get one from the States. I guess CR Kennedy wants us to buy Sigma instead. I'm taking it with a grain of salt, but I'd be disappointed if CRK don't end up importing it. I'd be interested in knowing what others in Australia are hearing. Dave -- No virus found in this incoming message. Checked by AVG Free Edition. News from Tanya (Fairygirl)
G'day All. Below is a note from Tanya (Fairygirl) She says to say G'day to all on the list. Hooroo. Regards, Trevor Grafton Australia Hey there Trevor!! How’s things!?! It’s lovely to hear from one of the “old clan”. I haven’t been lurking on the PDML for some time now. I just find that I can’t fit it into my day anymore, things are just too crazy in my life! Yup, I’m still using the *istD – I just got through a wedding season (Sept, Oct, Nov) where I shot no less than 30 weddings and it is still going strong!! The bike ride is still on the cards, however, we have some major changes afoot and unfortunately, may be forced to postpone it yet again. Steve and I are getting married on Valentine’s Day, which in itself doesn’t affect the bike ride, BUT, we have just discovered that we are also expecting a baby! S, I will be around 7-8 months pregnant during the ride, and obviously, that is not the most optimal condition for riding in! So, back to the drawing board at present to come up with some kind of a solution. Suffering MAJOR morning (well, all day) sickness at present, so just trying to get through that is in itself a huge mission. I usually remain really sick until I am well over 6 months preggers, so I have about another 4 months of that to look forward to as well. Aaaand, to top it all off, amidst wedding preparations, morning sickness, shooting and bookwork for the business etc, we are also moving house in a couple of weeks time! Like I said, it is crzy around here! The kids are great, and I’ve enjoyed a 4 week break over Christmas as they went to be with their Dad. Missing them like crazy though, and can’t wait for their return in just over 1 week. My daughter in particular is a bit worried that I will have replaced her with the new baby by the time they get back, as we only discovered the pregnancy after they’d left, and she can’t quite comprehend what it all means at the moment. I just can’t wait to give her a great big kiss and cuddle! Anyways, it was great to hear from you, and I may even resubscribe to the PDML just to let them know that I’m still breathin’ – but feel free to fill them in on all my news if you like, and give them all a shout out for me. Hope you had a great Chrissy and New Year! Hugs, Tan. Studio TmP 1/60 Berwick Street, Fortitude Valley, Qld, 4006 Australia www.studiotmp.com -- No virus found in this outgoing message. RE: Another introduction, and Happy Seasonings
G'day Keith. Mate, Welcome aboard. Ditto what David said. Enablement is habit forming. There are a few of us from OZ on this list. We're pretty well spread all over the Continent. All the best for Xmas and New Year. No signs of a Cyclone up your way is there? ;-) Hooroo. Regards, Trevor Grafton. I'm a lapsed Pentax user, happily returned to the fold. The first real camera I owned was (actually, is, as I still have it) a Pentax Super-A, bought in 1984 (along with a few lenses, flash and other bits and pieces). I loved using that camera but...a familiar story...got doing other things... As some others have found, the convenience [For me! No debate will be entered into!] of working digitally revitalised my interest in photography (as a hobby, although I teach biology and do use my pictures for that). When I finally decided to get a digital SLR I found, to my great delight, that I could get a Pentax AND use my old lenses. So I am now the pleased owner of an *ist DL (the DS2 not being available here -- Darwin, Australia -- or so I was told, perhaps wrongly; and, anyway, I like the DL just fine). I find the volume of messages on the list a bit daunting but there's some great stuff here. And I like the idea of PESO, PAW and PAD. Best wishes to all, where-ever you are and what-ever you are celebrating! RE: Which mid-range zoom do you prefer?
G'day John. I also have the DA 18-55 f:3.5-5.6 AL. It really doesn't float my boat. The 28-105 really is the preferred lens that shares the *istDS with the 35-135. My sister-inlaw has just bought the Gladstone Hotel just north of Kempsey. We went down there on Sunday, and the ist DS with 28-105 got a workout taking general shots of the Pub for her to supply to her insurance company. I also got a few shots of the river. I would have liked to have had the 35-135 with me. There was a few ducks cruising the river. The 28-105 just didn't have the legs to do them justice. I get to Brissie every now and then. Mostly for work of a daytime. I produce Hardwood timber flooring and do floor inspections for problem installations. I'll definitely give you a Cooee one day when I'm up there. G'day Don. I find the 35-135 to be a handy walk around lens on the *ist Ds. The Macro comes in handy every now and them. I find it to be sharp enough @ 5.6 and above. The only down sides are the rather long close focus distance and the crop factor at 35mm. At 135 with the crop factor, it reaches out very well. Hooroo. RE: F35-135 Minimum-Focus Distance at Wide End
G'day Greg. I have 2 of these SMC F 35-135 lenses. One lives on the PZ-1p. The other lives on the *ist Ds. I've found it to be a very good lens on both the Ds and the -1p. 35mm focus is about 8 to 10 feet (I haven't actually measured it accurately). 135 mm focus is about the same. What body are you using? It's a shame it doesn't focus closer as it is a very sharp lens with a very usable zoom range. The second lens was CLAed by C.R.Kennedy in Melbourne a few months ago. For a walk around lens, it's great. It allows you to reach further than a 28-105 and be less intrusive in public. Hooroo. Regards, Trevor. I understood it was sharp lens, though that was based on only one quote at Stan's site. I haven't looked at test shots yet, but I'm startled at the very long minimum-focus distance at the wide end. My rough measurement shows that it's around 15 feet! That makes it useless as a normal for family snaps; I'd instead have to step way back and zoom in closer to 135mm, where it focuses the closest. At 135mm, my rough measurement showed that it focused down to about 4' 9, longer than the official 0.75 meters. It has 3 extra focus markers marked 135, 50, 35. The one marked 35 seems to suggest that the minimum focus distance at 35mm is around 7 feet. The FA24-90 and the FA28-105/3.2-4.5 both let me focus very close at the wide end -- roughly 1.5 feet for both -- even though not quite as close as at the long end. Given this limitation of the 35-135, I'd be much better off using the 28-105 and cropping more at the long end. Is the 35-135 very unusual this way? Is something likely wrong with my copy that wide-end minimum focus is more like 15 feet than the seemingly marked 7 feet? But even 7 feet is really long compared to the others. Is 35-135 a difficult range to design? Many Thanks, Greg
RE: F35-135 Minimum-Focus Distance at Wide End
Oops. Forgot to mention. The Macro focus also helps for close focus. Some times at 35mm you can actually get close focus 2 to 3 feet by going to macro at 135. Regards, Trevor

G'day Tom C. I picked one up from a pawn shop here in OZ. It had a few marks on it. I then got a mint one from KEH only last month. So, at the moment, I have a spare Grip and Strap. Even the grip strap F for the SFXn improves the portability of the camera. It allows the shoulder strap to remain attached to the camera similar to the PZ-1P with Grip. Hooroo. Regards, Trevor. A very brief background before I get to my question: I have a K1000, MX, *ist(film), 6 M series primes, and two auto focus zooms. The *ist's complete lack of metering with the M lenses has become frustrating. So I'm in the market for a body that will fully support all the K mount lenses I currently own. The MZ-S is the logical choice here, but the budget (read: wife) says no. I'm considering either an ZX-5(n) or a PZ-1(p). After digging through Boj's site, I'm still unsure about the differences between the ZX-5 and the ZX-5n, and between the PZ-1 and the PZ-1p. The latter of both models seems to be a bit more desirable, but are the differences significant enough to warrant ruling out the previous models? Would those of you with experience using these bodies have any recommendations, advice, alternatives, etc.? Also, I've never really understood hyper manual and hyper program. Would anyone care to briefly describe them? Thanks a bunch! -- Scott Loveless http://www.twosixteen.com

G'day Marcus You are right of course. The SFXn is a bloody great SLR. I have one in mint condition fitted with the Pentax SMC F 35-135 and the AA battery grip. It gets used for BW shots or roaming candids at weddings etc etc. It's fitted with the Pentax Gripstrap F. This makes it handle almost as well at the PZ-1p with the grip strap FD. It is a bit loud. Fact is, I unsubscribed in early December to allow for my relocation to Brisbane and things are now going along swimmingly. I see that there are a few new faces around so welcome and hello to you too! Some of you may remember that I mentioned late last year that my new partner and I will be doing a bike ride from Brisbane to Perth (5700kms in 40 days!) this year? Well, it is all VERY full on. We have gained some huge sponsorship deals (Telstra, Cannondale, Woolworths to name a few), and are now in HEAVY training. We are currently on our bikes for a few hours a day, carving up the roads around Brissy and covering around 100kms per day in our preparations. We have press releases and television appearances coming up and those of you in Australia can expect to see us on Good Morning Australia (with Bert Newton), Rove, Channel Ten weather reports and possibly the Panel. We are also going to appear on the Breakfast show with Merrick and Rosso! wooohoo! Upon our arrival in Perth the West Coast Eagles (footy team) will be jogging along side of us! It is all so very full on! So yep, as usual, I am busy, busy, and oh, yeah, managing to take a few pics here and there (hehe). My *ist D has captured well over the 20,000 frame mark now, and still going strong. I have SO many weddings this year already, and it is even harder due to the fact that June, July and August will be out on account of our bike ride. We are also planning a bike ride through Mongolia and a hike on the Great Wall of China (early 2006), so I'm pretty certain that unfortunately, I won't be able to make GFM this year! hehe. Plenty of photo ops ahead of me though, and yes, I really should stop being so slack and start contributing to the PUG again. On the home front, things are going great. My new guy is fantastic and my kids adore him. They go back to school on Monday, so hopefully I will have a little more time on my hands soon and will be able to work more efficiently. Hell, I may even get to contribute to the PDML again from time to time! hugs, tan.x.

Many have dislliked this model. I, for one, loved it. Ergonomics were right for me. It blows the other models you mentioned out of the water. The hyper-program mode was right up my alley. Comparisons have been done between the Z-1 and similarly spec'd Nikons at the time. I was interested in the N8008s at the time. The Z-1/Z-1p blew them out of the water when one considers it could be purchased for about 1/2 what Nikon was asking and included an on-camera flash. A Pentax produced battery grip was not available. Unfortunately, now that I have the *ist D, my poor PZ-1p sits for months on end without use until I feed it a roll from time to time. It now feels largish when compared to the *ist D. If you wanted an AF film camera, you got a good one. Metering was always great and AF performed up to my expectations. Tom C. G'day Larry Thanks for the reply. As for the Overlapping Glass. I have these lenses. But some are bound for Ebay. As well as a MZ-50, Z-10 and a MZ-7 I am going to shoot a roll with each lens and try find the best ones for the Z-1 and flog the rest off. Hooroo. Regards. Trevor Australia Trevor, You'll love it. I've used a Z-1 since they first hit Asia (was working in Singapore Malaysia) as the next step from my Super-A. Everything very quickly became intuitive (and it's an ideal predecessor to the istD - my latest fascination) and it feels good in my hands. It's bigger than the istD and handles better with the (NON-Battery) grip which also makes it less likely to drop. It works fast and is bright and easy to frame. I guess that I'm one of the few that use the power zoom (except when the sound would be intrusive). Since a lot of my shots are food related, and paella doesn't easily startle, I use it. However, your lenses won't use that feature and it is a battery eater. It also works well with 42m lenses (a legacy from my '68 Spotmatic - which still works quite well) using the Pentax adapter. RE: SMC Pentax-F 35-135/3.5-4.5
G'day Kostas. I have been using this lens on a SFXn for the last month. I have found it to be great for indoors with the popup flash or the AF400FTZ. Images are sharp. Focusing is quick. The only drawback is that is has a long minimum focus distance. But Macro is useful. Also, I don't use any filters on this lens. The images appear better without the UV or the 1B filter I have also used it on the ZX-L outdoors as a walk around lens. It works just as well outdoors as indoors. The lens is compact enough not to get hung up on obstacles or other people in the street. For me, this lens is a keeper. Hooroo.
