Hi John - I'm currently using Trend Micro's Platinum AVprogram - I've used its 
predecessors for
years and have never had a virus, Trojan or malware infection.  It does 
slightly slow down some
internet sites where there are a lot of graphics files, but otherwise does an 
excellent job.
Prior to installing TMP, I relied on Windows Defender and my router firewall, 
and they were
effective and did not slow down sites at all.

alternative solution.

I've asked a few people I know for recommendations, and I've been pointed to 
either Kaspersky or
Avast as good products. 
Nobody, however, seemed to think that relying on the McAfee product was a 
particularly good idea.

Would anyone care to weigh in on the subject, and let me know what they would 
recommend for someone
in my situation?

Defender Pro - came with my Hp iwth Windoze pro installed... that was 
over a yearago -- I don't knwo if I paid extra for it or it was part of
my package onthe refurbbed machine, but they haven't asked me for any 
more money and it works great.

McAfee & Norton-Symantec seem to install something extra in their
software that makes them particularly difficult to get rid of. The
problem isn't with AVG, it's with McAfee (and Norton-Symantec).

This site claims AVG does have offline installers, they're just hard to
find. It has links.

In addition to anti-virus software, I use a HOSTS file to block unwanted
sites.

I found that Avast and malwares bytes are good.

But this should not lull you into a sense of false security. Malware and 
viruses can often spread faster than companies can update their systems.

Windows 10 firewall and defender have a good reputation as well.

Often attacks are spread by impersonating reputable organisations and 
convincing the user to download a file or to fill in a form with 
personal information. No security software can prevent this.


One issue is ransomware that encrypts you data files and demands money 
for the key to unlock them. The recommended practice is to have 
versioned backups of your data as a single backup may be encrypted as 
well.


So whatever software you use be careful.

Having dealt with Kaspersky professionally (I helped integrate their
OEM stuff into my former company's security products, and I dealt with
Mr Kaspersky himself), I would recommend that _very_ highly. Super
responsive to changing threats and less intrusive than many products.
