The photo that I took with the K-5 of the NYU  rule breakers was in PUG

liked and screamed pandemic life better, some with some humor but taken with my

Re: March PUG is up

2022-03-08 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
Thanks, Rick!

I was in the process of releasing several newly hatched Monarchs, and I had
this one on my hand. When I decided to try to get an image before it flew
away, I placed it on a a sheet of white fabric I sometimes use to
photograph flowers and other smaller items. When I noticed the shadow, I
rearranged the fabric so that the shadow clearly included the antennae,
which I thought would make the image a bit more interesting.

Re: March PUG is up

2022-03-08 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
That is an interesting and varied gallery. Thanks, Brian, for all your
efforts in maintaining the gallery each month.

There are a lot of interesting interpretations of the theme. I had taken
many similar images -- of my vaccination card, of restaurant shelters, of
dog walkers, of empty buildings, of vaccination centers, etc., but they
were all iPhotos, so I couldn't use them and had to go a bit afield instead.

My favorite image is Mark Cassino's "Hand Sanitizer." It is an unexpected
and effective concept, very well implemented.

"Badge of Honour?" by Alan Cole gets my award for most appropriate to the
theme.
I like the mood of "Walking the Dog" by Henk Terhell; that is a real
keeper as well. I also particularly like "Elevator Lobby, 4pm" by Rick
Womer.

I couldn't figure out why Ann' photo featured a vape shop until I read her
comments and realized she was focusing on the restaurant coverings around
the corner.

Overall, a very enjoyable PUG!

Re: March PUG is up

2022-03-08 Thread John Sessoms

> John, I hope “476 of 500” doesn’t mean 500 guitars… or does it?

It does. But I don't have all 500. I only have number 476.

Rickenbacker produced a limited run (500) "Carl Wilson Signature
Edition" guitars in 2000-2001. It was produced in the style of
Rickenbacker guitars made in 1965 with the checkerboard binding.

http://www.rickenbacker.com/news_item.asp?news_id=35=old

Mine is a 360/12CW in "Fireglo" finish, number 476 of 500.

I have somewhere around 30 or 31 guitars and that's too many because I
can't play them all as often as they need to be played. And it's
probably going to get worse as I move them into storage while I make
repairs around here.

I've been playing guitar since 1965. I didn't mean to become a
collector, I just bought guitars when I wanted to play them and had the
money to pay for them.

Over the years I've sold only one guitar and I've had two of them stolen
(years ago before I ever thought of documenting them photographically),
so they've kind of accumulated.

March PUG is up

2022-03-07 Thread Brian W
G'day all

A late flurry of submissions enabled a reasonably-sized gallery. Lots of
variations on the theme.

Enjoy the new gallery here:

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the gallery,
let me know.

Next theme: 'Red'.

Re: March PUG is up

2021-03-07 Thread Stanley Halpin
Thanks Brian for redoing the gallery with Bill and Rick’s submissions; they
both fit nicely!
And thanks to all who viewed and/or commented on my Penguin shot. I have
another taken within a few minutes of this which has two penguins, arms
(flippers) raised high as they run toward the sea. Titled "Surf Is Up!" in my
mind. It was a close call which shot to post this month…

I particularly like Rick’s Exeter shot, and I thought Bill and Paul and Don
nicely worked around the handicap of their distance from any ocean.

I was disappointed not to see at least one shot of an actual Marine in uniform.

I agree; it is a very pleasing PUG.

I wish more members would participate. It is very well presented, and once
again I thank you, Brian, for all the effort and skill you devote to the
gallery each month. I appreciate it very much, and it is a big part of the
glue that holds this group together.

As for the images, I also find County Courthouse by Don to be a stunning
photo, sharp, clear and full of interesting detail.
My other favorite is Ann's Pick Tulip. It is simple in concept and
composition, yet quite powerful i effect. The colors are pleasing, the
background is fitting, and the detail in the flower petals quite
fascinating.

March PUG is up

2020-03-04 Thread Brian W
G'day all

A small gallery but some nice work. Personal favourites are "Brise Soleil -
Closed"
by Paul and "County Courthouse" by Don:

http://pug.komkon.org/

(you may need to refresh your browser if you see the previous gallery there).

Note: The automated submission process usually works well but it's not
infallible. So, if you made a submission and you don't see it in the gallery,
let me know.

+

Next up: 'Ancient'.

Re: March PUG is up

2019-03-04 Thread Daniel J. Matyola
It's a very interesting gallery this month, with quality work.

My favorites, in order of preference, are:

Paul Sorenson's Apple Blossom. Just a perfect composition, with pleasing
bokeh. The red bugs really jump out at the viewer.
Bruce Walker's Dynamite. A startling and eye-catching image, with
pleasing, neon-like colors. Very nice subject, adeptly displayed.
Henk Terhell's Tandem Flight . This image confused me at first glance, but
the more I studied it, the more I liked it. It is an amazing capture, very
deftly rendered.

Good night all :-)

Before I turn in...   my fave is Pat's Big red ball.. so odd and
interesting   -   clowns scare me,  but i like Don's photo a lot,
Ken's cardinal is wonderful , and Rick's overburdened car is beautifully
lit and rather comical.   But overall handsome gallery,

even if March should have been GREEN :-)

Really interesting gallery - well done everyone who submitted.

Bong's pic is superb. And I like Malcolm's Bubbles (if you'll pardon the

Everything from big weather to no weather Lots of good stuff for
your viewing pleasure, although still only limited interest in the 'Open
Gallery' concept.

You'll find the gallery here:

http://pug.komkon.org/

Please note (in case you missed the recent 'PUG image sizes' thread).
There is a slight change in how images are displayed. Any image too
large to display without scrolling on most desktop monitors, will be
seen at a reduced size. In this gallery the images most affected by
this are those by Bong, Matthew Hunt, John Coyle and Bruce Walker. To
view an image at its original size, just click on the displayed image -
the original size image should appear in a new overlaid window (if you
have javascript disabled, the original size image will still appear but
you will need to use the browser's 'back' button to return to the
gallery).

If you have problems with this, please let me know. I've tested it on
Firefox 3, IE8, Opera 10, Chrome 9 and Safari 5 (Win version) and it
seems to be working OK (but how did Chrome get to version 9 so
quickly?).

Actually, one of the curses of maintaining the PUG is that I have to

No - your submission was a portrait format image and it's the vertical
800 pixel dimension that determines whether an image is displayed at a
reduced size. In the gallery, your image displays at about 356 x 533,
but the full sized image is displayed when you click on the gallery
image (although, because the gallery limit was 720 pixels on the longest
side, I had to resize your image (and several others) to fit within that
limit, so the 'full size' imaged displayed is actually 481 x 720 rather
than 534 x 800).

I'm not sure I'm explaining that well - does it make any sense?

The 800x800 box limit applies to galleries from the April PUG onwards.

I think that we are still at cross purposes a bit because portrait sized
images can be submitted up to 800 pixels high - they don't need to be
limited to 533 pixels high.

The idea behind the way the gallery now works is twofold:

* to enable viewers to see all the images in the gallery without having
to scroll those that are deeper than the browser window, and
* to allow viewers who want to see the images at the largest possible
size to do so.

I might be being a bit pedantic here but (hopefully) for the sake of
clarity

An image deeper than about 533 pixels (of any aspect ratio) won't be
physically resized, it will just have its height attribute reduced to
533 pixels within the associated html file - the rescaling to that
height is then done by the viewer's web browser. However, when the
viewer clicks on the displayed image, the full-sized image will then be
displayed (and will need to be scrolled).

As an example, if someone submits an 500 x 750 pixel image, it will be
displayed in the gallery at 355 x 533. When the viewer clicks that
image, the full 500 x 750 pixel image will appear.

The only time that I will physically resize an image is if it exceeds
the 800 x 800 limit.

There are some really great shots in this set. One of the things
I've always wanted to do as a photographer is to head out into the
central planes of the US and do a little storm chasing. I don't know if
I'll ever get that opportunity. But, I've always had a fascination with
Big Weather.

The only thing I have in my collection of shots that would have applied
to the theme is a few shots of some mammatus clouds I caught last
spring. Unfortunately, there wasn't much to the shots to speak of other
than the fact that they were of mammatus clouds. I wish I'd captured

Cheers

Brian

Thanks, Brian for your work. Excellent gallery as always.

I just might try the Open Gallery next month, you know... I was kind

Nice gallery. My favorites are Mark's Forbes Avenue Fantasy, Scott's
Crutch, and Rick's Long Wait? Many other excellent pics here.

Indeed. Scott, you should send that shot over to
http://thereifixedit.com/

I immediately gravitated to Dag Thrane's shot (I could have guessed it
was one of his before even clicking on it). Rick Womer's shot is also
great.

Some great stuff there.

In the spirit of always grabbing the low-hanging fruit, may I just say that
I particularly like Scott's crutch?

Dave Brooks's gorilla is also one of my faves. He looks as if he's trying to
figure out whether gorillas are supposed to have legs or not, and if so
where the hell his are. He could probably make good use of Scott's crutch.

Rick wins :-) - hillarious shot -- wish I'd taken it - and very
bewildering, indeed.

Dag - spot on for the theme , I have no clue what that is and the lines
are nice

I love Dan's skyline but don't find it bewildering, just beautiful

And Scott's isn't bewildering, either,(to me)

but fun I gerryrig things all the time and
might easily have done something like that if I couldn't find the
correct gizmo

or it was too pricey.

I broke the rules and sent a photo too late to use the form - but you'd
all seen it anyway and it

wasnt all that bewildering.

Scott I promise .. I'll get something in for April in time... I
certainly have lots that fit the theme

already hehe
