I really like the picture of Chris. Is that an ice cream van, as another
message stated? It looks most like a Popemobile to me, but the setting
makes that seem unlikely, and I don't think there were Popemobiles that
long ago, and on closer inspection, there appears to be a refrigerator in
the passengers seat...

It looks like a good little group, and it looks like a great time.

I really like Image L129; the negative space of the wall creates
a feeling of alone-ness, and the presence emerging from the wall at
right adds mystery and a slight sense of danger. I also like the
texture visible on the upper wall, although I can't explain why. G

It hasn't opened yet. I'd expect it to be extremely busy indeed, especially
at weekends. The blockbuster exhibitions are often best seen on late Friday
evenings - it's open until 10pm, so getting there at about 7.30 - 8pm should
give plenty of time to see it with the least people. At other times, even
with timed tickets, you tend to be pushed around the exhibition by the
crowds.

If you know of any other interesting goings on we'd be
 interested to hear about them.

There's always something. Borough Market is a nice place to meet of chilly a
morning for a late-ish breakfast, photo-shoot and meander around. Most of
the markets are quite interesting - Smithfield, Brick Lane, Weymouth Street,
Camden Lock, Portobello - all worth a visit. Or you could tour the Olympic
site by bicycle along the canal towpaths (East London has more canals than
Venice. Bit short on Doges, though. Although I suppose there is the Isle Of
Doges, or is that a misprint?).

The days, of course, are very short - the clocks went back this morning, so
you don't get much light, but what you do get is usually very nice for
photography.

Well, I've just finished watching a doco on BBC1 about the exhibition, so
that will probably at least triple the number of people who come to see it.
It is probably a once in a lifetime chance to see all these pictures in one
place, but I don't think it will be the most relaxing of experiences.

If you've ever seen the Mona Lisa in the Louvre you'll understand something
of the crowds that this sort of thing can attract. This is what they look
like:
http://www.web-options.com/Paris/content/L1000127_large.html

However, in the gallery behind them, through the entrance you can see in the
centre of the photo, there are several other Leonardos which practically
nobody stops to look at, they're so caught up in the headlong rush to stand
in front of the famous one. You can spend as long as you like in front of
them, and get close enough to touch them if you were minded too. I expect if
they are in the London exhibition they will attract the sort of crowds they
haven't seen for decades. Perhaps even some Parisians will come and see
them.

There are however plenty of interesting and uncrowded things to see and do
other than markets and block-buster exhibitions. What sort of thing would be
of interest?

Classical music. Early music in particular.

Thomas Tallis was a local boy from Greenwich and the parish church, St.
Alfege, often has free concerts of his music, often given by students of
Trinity College of Music, which is in the old Royal Naval College here. I'll
see if anything's on.

In fact, the world's largest early music festival is taking place here in
Greenwich in less than 2 weeks' time - 11-13th Nov. It seems to be largely
about instruments, but there are also recitals.
http://www.earlymusicshop.com/More/Greenwich_International_Early_Music_Fest
ival/diary_of_events.aspx

St. Martin in the Fields, next to the National Gallery, often has concerts
on - I think (not sure) that they specialise in early music.

These wacky funsters give concerts in some of the nicest churches in London
- Wren, Hawksmoor, Vanbrugh etc.
http://www.renaissancesingers.com/The_Renaissance_Singers/Home.html

And of course there are all the usual venues for classical music: Royal
Festival Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall, ...

So there's plenty going on just before you get here, and just after you've
left...

That's already 50% larger than my usual tolerance level for galleries of
any kind. Some I can't even enter. Don't get me started on Pollock.

So... tell us about Pollock.

Iliotibial Band

Aah.

Iliotibial band syndrome (ITBS or ITBFS, for iliotibial band friction
syndrome[1]) is a common injury to the thigh, generally associated with
running, cycling, hiking or weight-lifting (especially squats) by people
who are getting on a bit and should really be sat at home with mug of
tea and a book.

Indeed, but next week the attractive physio is going to work on my glutes.

I'm up for that. It's also the Wildlife Photographer of the Year at the NHM,
but likely to be crowded at weekends.

Yes, I'll come on down too. Maybe Karin as well, but she's hedging her bets
at the moment...

How about JB in the morning, a spot of lunch and then the British Library
thing?
