Dan, Wonderful photo, easy to see why it made it into the Pentax gallery. The scene is beautiful with the flowers and walkway, plus the person and pillars gives it a real 3rd dimension. Hey, always good to know an old Marine. I retired as a W-4, USN type, but Marines were my favorite people. Did you ever transpac through Guam back then? I was at the Photo Lab there, NAS Agana, from 65 to 68. I got some great photo's of a Marine F-4 that blew a tire on takeoff roll and he creamed into one of the concrete jbd's at the international airport on the other side of the field. They both climbed out as the fire trucks were pulling up. I might scan a few and put on my website. Anyway, great photo's. Glad you are represented in the Gallery. You deserve it! Hi swabbie! No, I never made it to Guam. I passed through Okinawa instead, on my way to Da Nang, Iwakuni and Chu Lai. I'd love to see your F-4 photos and any other Navy shots from those days. Re: PESO: Garden Walk
Thanks, Bob! I had several shots near this location, most with my wife in the frame. None of those, however, came out quite right, perhaps partly because of the light rain. As we were leaving San Michelle (which is a fascinating place), I returned to the walkway, and framed this shot as a stranger was entering the garden. Re: PESO: Garden Walk
Thanks. The self portrait was from my very first roll in a Pentax. I had just purchased the Spotmatic, and loaded it with firm. I took a few shots from the aircraft -- nothing special. on the way home, I decided to finish the roll. I adjusted the rear view mirror and the camera so I could see the front of the lens in the camera. I figured that if I could see the lens, and it looked like it was pointing directly at me, then the camera should see my reflection in the mirror. As you can see, it isn't very well centered, probably because the camera was tilted just a bit too high. In any event, I liked the result, and decided to leave the empty space at the top of the frame, rather than cropping most of it out, since it seemed to give a feel of being in the cockpit and of the large clear canopy overhead. Re: PESO: Garden Walk
Thanks, Frank. I submitted more than 12 before I got some in -- a lot more than 12. First, I submitted my favorite images: all rejected. Then, I submitted the ones that had received positive feedback here or on another forum: all rejected. Then, I submitted my prettiest images: all rejected. Then, I submitted the ones I thought were unusual or artistic: all rejected. Finally, I went back over a large number of photos, and picked out several that I thought could be improved by cropping, cloning out distractions, or using different contrast or brightness settings. In two cases, I took wide angle shots and used the transform function of PS to remove or reduce the distortion. (Those two are still Under Review, while some submitted several days later were already rejected.) The three that were finally accepted were from the best of this last process. Since they rejected the House of the Sun image I entered in the PDML photo book, a found another shot from that some day that was a bit wider and less abstract; I cropped it a bit, added a little more contrast, and it worked. One of the first images I submitted to Pentax was the image of the iron spiral staircase in the Barnegat Lighthouse. Almost everyone here and elsewhere commented that the bright light in the image was distracting, and I agreed, so I cropped it out. The cropped image was rejected. Then, I went back and cloned out the light, a difficult and time consuming process. That was also rejected, Finally, as an afterthought, I submitted the original image, with no cropping and no adjustments in PhotoShop. That became the first of my images accepted by Pentax. I was quite surprised. The shot of the Jellyfish tank in the Maui Ocean Center is still my favorite image, which is why I submitted it for our photo book. It was rejected by Pentax, so I tried a heavily cropped version, which was also rejected. I am determined to go back to the original files, and start all over, to see if I can somehow make them see what I see in that image. Probably a waste of time, but I think I have learned a lot by trying to figure out what they like and how I can tweak an image to make it better. Thanks again for looking and commenting.
