No not really, I was shooting from a ditance with a 300mm on my K-3.

A few days after this the entire nest of 4 young robins was cleaned out by a 
group of crows, not only ending their life but ruining my chance to capture 
a sequence as the matured on the nest.

Nice illustrative shot Frank, it's so difficult to make a well
composed shot of birds in trees, especially when they are up high
with bright sky behind or branches between, you did good!

I was hoping he'd be wearing a cape.  Despite that, it is one of
the most impressively un-theraulitian bird photos I've seen in a while.

ROFL! Did I mention I shot this in my friends garden (while drinking
beer) as an example why Pentax is superior (he spend days capturing
the bird with his Nikon). He is now pondering if he should start a
stamp collection or switch brand.
As for the gear thanks to the 540 flash which had enough power and in
wireless mode I could handhold the flash closer to the lens (on camera
the shadow in the nest box was to big).

Our little fantail friend came and helped us in the garden again today but I 
was too busy with the pruning to go inside and get the camera.

He was behaving a bit like a cat, getting in the way all the time.  I realised 
that my pruning was shaking the plant enough to scare insects out of the 
foliage which he'd eat in flight.  Then he'd perch again and watch.  Very 
chatty too, I think he was quite enjoying himself.

leading my eye away from the bird.

I think the shooting distance on my robin was about 20 feet. The
AF 400T is poweful enough to give you some fill at that distance,

high synch mode that allows high shutter speeds with the D
camera, even though the camera's native synch speed is very
limited. Even the AF400T could benefit from the magnifier. If
memory serves me correctly, it was inexpensive. I bought it from Kirk.

I haven't seen our first robin of spring yet.  Hopefully soon.  It's
been colder than seasonal of late (odd, as most of the winter has been
unnaturally mild).

poweful enough to give you some fill at that distance, but you need a camera

Thanks for your nice comments. And yes it's a Robin (erithacus
rubecula). In the Netherlands we call it Roodborstje (red breast).
It's a very funny bird and defends it's territory aggressively.
I considered cropping the shot but I like it this way (very small bird
against a big background) and this way the CA errors of the lens don't
show.

Some of the most difficult creatures to identify with certainty are  
the microlepidoptera, very tiny moths.  There is one series of genera  
with the names Perplexa, Vexata, Exasperata and Damnifica.  All were  
named by entomologist J.F. Gates Clarke to express his mood at the  
time of attempting to classify them.


When I worked at the Smithsonian Institution many years ago we had a  
jokester who used to create weird bugs and slip them into the  
collection.  One notable example of his work was a large beetle  
carved from plastic that we found in one of the collection drawers

A technically well done shot.  The only downside for me is the bird is
just sitting there - almost like it was stuffed.  Somehow I'd like it
be actively doing something.  As it is, it would be a great shot for
learning what this particular bird looks like.  Food for thought.

It is doing something.  It is staring intently at the photographer in  
an alert pose.  Birds like this robin with eyes on the side of  
their head are looking at you when the side of their head is toward  
you.  They arrived here last week, and the males like this fellow are  
busy picking out their territories and squabbling with other males  
over the prime real estate so they'll be all set when the females  
arrive.  Sort of reminds me of the people around here!

to wait for a shot with the camera in place. If you raise the camera 
while the bird is in this position, he'll fly away.

I haven't done much bird photography in recent years.  Mostly these  
days when I go for hikes I just take binoculars and come back with  
memories.  But I used to do a lot of bird photography in earlier  
times, and may make a return to it when I can take life at a slower  
pace.

Although I've sold a few as stock, I don't shoot birds seriously. But I 
find it a relaxing diversion. I sometimes walk three miles through the 
woods without getting off a single shot, cut it's still a good time. 
Today I got four or five keepers in just a mile or so. That's rare in 
my experience for anywhere other than a migratory fly zone like Point 
Pele in Ontario. Speaking of Point Pele I went there last May. Looking 
forward to making the trip again this year. Some list members are 
regulars there.
