I'm way past expecting any of my photo sales to cover an equipment habit. I
gave that notion up years ago when I acquired my 600.

Thanks Stan, - I pretty sure my days of lugging that combo around are over -

I captured several 'once in a lifetime' images during that stay at Denali. I
hope to return, but the 600mm will definitely not be with me.

I am not sure which is more impressive. The bear shot, the caribou shot, or
the fact that you hiked, in the bush, for several hours with a camera body
on a big mother 600/4.0 lens on a big mother tripod. All three are
remarkable! And the time spent was obviously well worth it.

Great catch and ideal bokehi.
You indicated it had been shot

Might it have been shot with the

Taken awhile back in Denali National Park, Alaska, early fall, with a

I hiked in the bush for several hours tracking a group of Caribou as

Do the wildlife authorities mark them with that large a splodge of
blue paint, or does the bear have diarrhea from gorging on
blueberries?

Rick, the blue on his butt is from the crushed berries he sat on while
gorging himself on the berries.
We saw scat in the area and it was pretty loose as you might expect from a
diet of berries.

Thanks to all that looked and commented.

This image was in one of the early PDML books.

FYI - it was one of the first images I took with the *ist D.
Taken with a 600mm f4.0 FA - only a minor crop - I was in a vehicle parked
as close to the bear as allowed by the park.

Cool!
Dan, I liked the image when I saw it earlier, and despite the weather,

PS. Many years ago, I was wondering what the number means when a movie
theater is called e.g. "Windchimes Cinema 18". And then I figured it out.

So, now, I know what "Monarch 12" means. ;-)

Yes, Mark this is the second one in the last few months. Both are
insect macros taken with my trusty old FA 100 mm F 2.8 macro, hand
held. I also am very pleased with the image stabilization of the K-5

This came as quite a surprise. I have been using Photo.net to store
most of my images that I intend to show here or share with others for
years, but this is my first photo of the day.

BTW, I chose another image from the same shoot for my PESO here of the
Sphinx or False Hummingbird moth, although this was among those chosen
for my GESO of the moth shoot.

As far as I can tell, the filter just looks for letter combinations. So

It's a play on right-click save. Sometimes there are NSFW photos on that
LJ, but the woman who posts there has pretty good taste.

I follow a bunch of photo blogs/image aggregators via LiveJournal and RSS
feeds (via Google Reader). Here are five:

http://ound.com/
Awesome image aggregator. Stuff ends up here from every corner of the web.
Occasionally NSFW.

http://industrialdecay.blogspot.com/
Photos of industrial and urban decay. NOTE: High-bandwidth site. LOTS of
photos on the main page, but worth every one of them!

http://awkwardfamilyphotos.com/
The URL is as much description as you should need.

http://npocto-kpacota.livejournal.com/
Russian (I'm guessing) LJ featuring photos that are usually heavily
photoshopped, but still quite pretty.

http://failblog.org/
Photos of failures of various kinds. Basically, schadenfreude and facepalm
moments.

http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42898000/jpg/_42898991_leaders20

I think this is a really extraordinary news photo, and goes right
to
the heart of what is great about news photography.

In or out of the context of the situation (which I agree is
 extraordinary and I hope sustainable)?

News photography is inseparable from the context. If it were 2
ordinary people the picture would be nothing, but to have a picture of
these 2 laughing together would have been unthinkable even a few
months ago. When you look back over the events of the last 40 years it
seems almost impossible to think that this could happen and that these
2 people could be leading it together.

Two of a small group that have brought more death, destruction and misery to
these islands than anyone since Hitler. They are happy because our
government has handed over power to them so they can continue to extort and
terrorise their local populace. Just in a more subtle way than before. It's
Blair's last-ditch attempt to be remembered for something other than the
quagmire in the middle east.
