Re: PESOs: Domesticated fauna, shot with new-ish lens

2010-09-14 Thread Walter Gilbert
I think there may have been a bit of camera shake in the dog photo. I
kept having to call his name to get him to look at me, and his attention
span isn't very long. So, I had to rush the shot a bit, which probably
contributed to the softness.

Thanks for the kind words!

  Thanks, Frank.

I am a bit of a saturation and contrast junkie, at least at this stage
of my development. I can see where some might find it a bit cloying,
but I figure if I'm taking photos of generally unremarkable subject
matter -- and, let's face it, cows aren't the most electrifying members
of the animal kingdom -- I need to do something with it to grab the eye.

1:4-5.6 tele-macro (1:2). I noticed some pretty severe fringes at f/4, but
otherwise, I feel it's a pretty competent lens for under $200 US.

(Note the blue around the nostril in this one -- I'll need to do some
desaturation on that.)

Anyone else had any experience with this lens, and advice on getting the
most out of it?

And, of course, suggestions, critiques, and inappropriate comments are
always welcome.

Not a bad lens at all, if these samples are representative.

I have no idea how to get the best out of a lens. I just shoots
pictures is all.

I like the saturated colour renditions of these, though. Interesting
photos, too - well done, all of them!

cheers,
frank

It's almost assuredly a rebadge of the Sigma 70-300 APO, and as such
quite a reasonable performer considering its cost.

To get the most out of it, stop down 1-2 stops and stay away from the
last 50mm of the range where it will soften somewhat noticably.

Re: PESOs: Domesticated fauna, shot with new-ish lens

2010-09-12 Thread Walter Gilbert
Thanks for the info, Adam. It seems to be really well-built compared
to some others I've used and handled. Plenty of resistance in the lens
barrel, and a very smooth, crisp responsiveness. I'm pretty pleased
with it, construction-wise. And, giving up a stop, and the last 50mm
doesn't seem like too much to sacrifice.

The look is reminiscent of some Sigmas I've seen, so I suspect you're right.

Thanks again,

Walt

Too late. It's already out there. You can't stop Steve from seeing it.

Especially since I already forwarded it to him off-list.

ps: just kidding - didn't forward anything to anyone. Steve went
through a bovine period a few years ago, but I don't recall seeing
many cow shots from him lately...
