Juan,

Inspired by this discussion, I dug out my Pentax Optio, with a whopping 3.2 MP
and a 1 1/2 in LCD for framing.

I’ll have to try it out, just for grins.

Hmmm… Will have to dig out my CF card reader too, if it still exists...

If I may return to the subject of the subject line, there is another use
for small sensors:

“ But the Pentax Q

their tiny sensors are at their Best for *Long Reach* Astro-Photography
Why ?
Simply because thousands of Deep Sky Small Objects will Never fill an APS-C
sensor !
Even mounted on a very affordable SkyWatcher 1000mm Newtonian !
+ these tiny sensors are Very Sensitive ~ DxO *ISO 5680* FF-Equivalent for
the 1/2.3" in the Pentax Q

 !”

Geo444 has great posts in that thread.

I might ad the smaller/lighter body is a good match for the Meade ETX
90/105/125 at prime focus. I’ve got an opportunity to get a Pentax Q-S1 for
$40 (no chargers) 5-15mm zoom & might snag it for that low $$.

2021-04-23 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Hallo!

Back from Waukegan last night about 11pm. It was cold there the entire time I
was…! I think the overnight temperature at least two of the days I was there
was in the middle 20°F range, in mid-April… and it never rose over 48°F until
the end of the last day. Rather different from here in balmy Northern
California, where a chilly overnight is 45°F and daytime temps in the 65-75°F
range are the norm at this time of year. Brrr! I was cold.

I did see some hardy bicyclists pedaling about, obviously geared up for the
temperatures and used to them. :D

There wasn't a lot of free time to run down into Chicago. I did have an
excellent dinner with the guy I was doing business with at Inovasi's restaurant
in Lake Bluff, and I bought a very tasty small plate of ribs at Hillerie's
B-B-Q as well. That small plate was enough food for three people by my
standards…! I guess I don't eat midwesterner style quantities, I was stuffed by
the time I had eaten about a third of it.

No chance to use the gym, and only one side trip to see the BaHa'i House in
Willmette (which I promised to get to if I could and make some photos for a
friend here). I carried only the iPhone 11 Pro and the Minox B, made 131 photos
with the iPhone and 26 with the Minox. The BaHa'i House temple is a pretty neat
piece of architecture, would be fun to photograph that with the Hasselblad. For
traveling light, my "Invisible backpack" was awesome, and I could get in and
out of planes, buses, etc with it easily. Could have carried the Leica CL with
two lenses stuffed into the top of it easily too, with plenty of room to spare,
but I knew there would be minimal time to do any "real" photography so didn't
bother.

Good to be home, and the purpose of the trip was successful. The Toy I went to
inspect and acquire is on the way home. Now I know I'm in deep trouble… LOL!

The thing about YouTube for music is it has exposed me to such a wide range of
musical styles & genres that I would not have otherwise encountered.

When I run across a "keeper" I play it into a program called Audacity and save
it as an MP3 file. My car radio has an input where I can connect a USB stick
with MP3 files and play them when there's nothing on the radio I'm interested in

I have about 100 hours worth of music on the stick before I have to repeat a

2021-04-17 Thread Godfrey DiGiorgi
Thank you, Juan! I appreciate the compliment! :)

The lure in all technical subjects for technically minded folks is to
concentrate on the technology, whether or not the results have a positive
impact on the results of the endeavor or not. I do my best to avoid the
'constant search for perfect, noise-free images' and try to think about making
photos I like from a different perspective. I don't get annoyed at what others
do other than when I get suckered into doing it too … which happens,
occasionally. 

It's a lot easier to talk about cameras from the perspective of megapixels,
sensor size, et al, than it is to discuss photographs. Discussing photographs
means we have to think about what we're seeing, capturing, and why/how it
affects us ... what our intent in presenting it might be. Can't just look at a
spec sheet for information on that…

The Moment camera app allows you to save captures as DNG raw files. It works
well, but there are some circumstances when the Apple Camera app does a better
job due to combining captures from multiple cameras and outputting an .HEIF
file. I use both camera apps with the iPhone 11 Pro and have gotten some
excellent photos out of it.

The iPhone 12 has a couple more features in the cameras than the iPhone 11. I
haven't spent any time with a 12 yet.

Yes!  .. but don't call it's location "downtown"  there is no"downtown"
in Chicago in the sense you mean .. in Chi town it is "the Loop"  so
called because part of the elevated section of the subway system makes
that shape ..

Uno's has a sister location nearby which is a bit larger and absolutely
the same pie - and my fave of the two locations.. BUT
looks like they are just doing take out due to THE virus.. it is at the
corner of Wabash and Ontario. .. Possibly Uno is only takeout/delivery.

What hotel are you staying in?  We should talk when you are on your way

Is it possible you have NEVER been to Chicago?

RAW on the 12 pro max is excellent. You get all the Adobe raw converter tools

My old Huawei P20 Pro outperformed my 1st generation Q. My wife's iPhone 11
outperforms my old P20 Pro, and as an aside, the camera in my Note 10 plus.
The Q was an odd camera. There really wasn't a market for it even when it
was fresh on the market other than the Japanese teenage girl brigade and
nutbars like myself that will buy pretty much anything that takes pictures
and has the name Pentax on it.
The teenage girls have long since moved on to cell phones.
It was a clumsy size, not big enough to be a real camera, but too big to be
an easily pocketable point and shoot if the standard zoom lens was on it.
Even with the standard lens it was kind of thick.
They should have made a retractable lens for it, but that would have been
throwing money out the window.
It did punch above its weight regarding image quality, but this was negated
by it's slowness.

It was kind if cool with the standard lens and clip on viewfinder. I never
came to like cameras that don't have viewfinders.

The compact camera market is pretty much done, I suspect the bridge market
isn't far behind. The future of cameras is expensive higher end products
with sufficient separation from cell phones that it will be a while before
they catch up.
Hence the 2k APS-C camera with a real optical viewfinder.

Thanks Godfrey!

Great photo! I think there's something really annoying with the constant
search for perfect, noise-free images. I get it, cameras nowadays can
resolve every photon in a scene without noise at all. Boring. Art is a play
between lost and found, between what you show and what you suggest, or
better yet, what the viewer thinks you show and or suggest. This photo by
Godfrey is a good example of this.

Having great tools is just that, great. But seeking perfect sharpness and
rendition regardless of whether these things contribute to the image at all
is what I said--boring.

However, I'm grateful to those who review photo hardware and show the rest
of us what's sharp and what bokeh looks like. That helps my effort, when I
want a sharp lens or something that does this or that, I can find that info
by looking at what the pixel peepers said.

It's a different mindset from the "ultra-shallow DoF" look that seems so
popular in recent years.

Hmm. I'm headed off to Chicago for four days to conduct some business. I was
debating on what camera to take along … don't want to carry much. Now I think
I'll just load up a Minox and slip that into my pocket. Thanks!

And of course we have phones with 11 megapixel sensors, shake reduction, RAW
capability, panorama and portrait modes and more. They’re making small cameras
obsolete.

I made a video about how I like cameras with small sensors. Featuring the
MX-1, Ricoh GR Digital IV and photos from the Q7

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQWxUFJR7Xk

These cameras have become basically unnecessary given that we have things
like the GR with an APS-C sensor (and the 16MP GR2 is one of my favorite
cameras of all time). But I really think there's something about the images
coming out of 1/1.7" or so sensors at around 12MP that compares well with
grainy 35mm black and white film.

I gotta agree too. I've been pocketing a Olympus XZ-1 for years, and
recently upgraded that to a XZ-2. These, too, are equivalent to the
MX-1, GR IV, etc. Both have their custom settings set up for B, with a
little extra sharpening and contrast, and get used at ISO320/640.
They're terrific little devices.

Thanks Ann!

FWIW, I don't want my videos to be about the tech talk. When I look at a
lens or camera I care more about how it makes me feel than anything else.
Sharpness is a bourgeois concept, anyway :)

I totally agree. The MX-1,Q7 and Q-S1 are my favorites. Nowadays my
daily photobag includes two small sensor cams. Q-S1/wide 08 and a
coolpix P950 which gives me a range from ultra wide to ultra tele.
The examples in your video are very convincing and noise from raw
isn't any problem. And not just any examples. Chapeau!

Yet another proof - as if any was needed - that the camera is far less
