They are totally different products serving totally different markets.

Pentax DSLR are bought by amateur photographers who are long-time Pentax
users or individualists who look for something different from the usual
big names.

The typical Leica buyer is a lawyer or dentist who is looking for a way
to spend some of that money made under the table. Cars, boats etc. are
no longer an alternative, at least not here in Europe, because the
taxman would get wind of it. In most EU countries you can't even pay
cash any longer for anything over 3000 euros.

In my opinion it is important for R/P to hold on to their line of very
versatile rugged APS-C and FF DSLR's, but not to eliminate features in
striving to (more) compactness.

Olympus was doomed because of all their cards on MFT format and the
trend to greater sensors.

Sony has decided to spend all it's corporate treasury to capture the

I have a tilt-up screen on my 645Z which I *never* use. I only ever
shoot using the OVF so the LCD remains flat against the body.

Ironically, I am considering substituting a (tilting LCD) K-1 for my
(non-tilting) K-3 as my backup/alternate body, and I would treat that
tiltable K-1 LCD the same way: stuck resolutely to the back. Can't use
an LCD viewscreen for shooting; don't need an LCD viewscreen for
shooting.

And really, since Ricoh/Pentax has decided to stick with the OVF and
forgo mirrorless designs, favouring the OVF is a reasonable way to go.

I remember it, but I didn't realize it was that long ago. You just made me feel
old, because I remember seeing it when I had the *ist-D and counting back I
realized I got that 16 years ago.

It was marketed that the TV camera clipped onto the view-finder in place of the
eye-cup and when you held your camera overhead with a monopod, the little TV
screen could be clamped onto the monopod to put it at eye level (not snarking
this time).

IIRC, you used a long cable release to fire the shutter.

I thought about getting one, but IIRC they didn't have a version that would fit
onto the *ist-D eyepiece. Already back then Pentax wasn't being supported by
third party vendors.

Maybe mount the camera on a monopod to hold it up in the air and duct tape the

At one time Asahi Pentax offered a right-angle finder attachment: this fitted
to the viewfinder and allowed the user to look down into it with the camera at
any lower level required. Of course, the eye still needed to be close to the
eyepiece to view: possibly this is why not many were ever seen in use, and the
piece was dropped from the line-up years ago. Perhaps if it had been a good
seller, it would have continued to be made.
I'm not much into macro or other shots which might require me to get down on
the ground - mainly because of aged muscles! - so I am not hanging out for a
flip screen.

Re: story 3 of the new APS-C flagship (PESO)

2020-09-05 Thread P. J. Alling

That's very impressive, and I understand your point.

I also see their point, and having gone partway down the path to trying
to get a Pentax DSLR repaired out of warranty recently I can see the
need to minimize points of failure.  I simply replaced my K-5II rather
than getting it repaired.

By the way in it's current condition it's worth about $25.00 US, (if
anyone's interested in it for parts they can have it for the price of
shipping), but it could be worse the K20D is beat all to hell has a
cracked viewfinder lens and I have to hold the SD card door closed with
tape, but it still takes photos as good as it ever did, and it's worth
about $6.00 US.

either they are great bargains at the moment, about half what I
expect the new flagship to debut at. Sure you give up some battery
life and some buffer, but what I would want a flippy screen for
buffer and battery life are probably the least of my worries.  I also
expect that given current sensor tech you won't see a lot of
difference between results from them vs the new flagship.

Not having an articulated screen does have the advantage of avoiding
another point of failure.  I'll bet that Ricoh has a lot of internal
data showing more screen repairs on those models than on any of the
others.

Re: story 3 of the new APS-C flagship

2020-09-05 Thread P. J. Alling
I've ranted about Pentax and now Ricoh marketing and their naming
conventions or lack thereof a while ago.

I must admit I haven't handled either a K-70 or a KP and have no
particular interest in either.  The big selling point of the KP was it's
small size, but really it's not a hell of a lot smaller than a K3 and
not really any smaller than a K-5, three dials for the exposure triangle
would be nice, but I've gotten used to having two, and a button.

I can however see that having a flip out back screen or not is a
question of preferring a robust body vs convenience in certain
circumstances will effect future repairs as well as cost. Personally
I've never felt the need for a flip out screen, but I can see why people
would want one.

I have a few moves Ricoh could make for me to decide to ditch Pentax,
chief among them abandoning support for all those legacy lenses I've
collected over the years.  So far they haven't done that.

I'm still annoyed at the loss of the aperture simulator, none and I mean
none of the explanations make any sense except for cost.

Re: story 3 of the new APS-C flagship

2020-09-04 Thread Henk Terhell

I wonder how customers will appreciate the lack of this feature.
Of around 20 DSLR's now offered on the market only 2 low budget and 4
top professional (sport)camera's have a fixed screen.

None of the  mirroless camera's (except one Leica) has a fixed screen.
For nature photography (flowers, mushrooms) a tilted screen has become
an essential tool.

With the K-1 I experienced that built-in GPS is extremely  useful for
automatic reporting to datasets of nature observations.

So for me Ricoh/Pentax will have nothing to offer in APS-C format.
