The information that Rachel refers to was very useful in treating a textile
infestation I worked on last year. But lists of commercial items do have to
be updated from time to time as models are discontinued. I found that to be
the case with some of products in the freezer list. To help update that list
(when it goes back online) I had the museum I consulted for purchase
an Arctic Air brand model CF20 commercial 61 chest freezer.

It has worked satisfactorily though the lid seal wasn't as tight as I would
have liked. Some moisture infiltrated into the non-self-defrosting freezer
when closed. This was solved simply by adding some pressure to the lid and
by inserting a custom cut lift-out insulation board just below the lid. The
insulation board also lowered the minimum operating temperature a few
degrees to -23ÂșC. Among the final choices the Arctic Air model was chosen
for its lower price (~$850).

 Jerry (and others),
In fact your plea has been answered!

The Integrated Pest Management Working Group did take on this topic and
compiled a number of resources including tips on freezers which are posted
on the www.museumpests.nethttp://www.museumpests.net website in the
Solutions section. Unfortunately we had a recent incident with unauthorized
access on the site and so a few of the pages (including this material) are
not back up yet. I hope that people will be patient as we restore all the
content and links and that you will check back soon to find the useful
resources created by Emily Kaplan and the rest of the IPM-WG Treatment
subgroup. I will post to this list when the assets are again available.

 Best,
 Rachael

Every couple of years there are new questions about what freezer to buy,
 recommended temperatures, etc.

I recommend you check the archives at CoOL:
 http://cool.conservation-us.org/http://cool.conservation-us.org/

 especially the distlist archives:
 http://cool.conservation-us.org/byform/mailing-lists/cdl/

If someone could gather this data and condense it, the result might be very
 useful

[pestlist] Squirrels

2010-10-06 Thread Dennis Piechota
I hope this is the appropriate place to ask about larger urchins.

We have a storage area for archaeological materials (almost all inorganics,
typically ceramics, stone and iron) that keeps getting attacked by
squirrels. They like to eat the glue in our corrugated boxes, thus
destroying our provenience data. Then they will sometimes nest in the boxes!
Very disheartening. We keep trapping them and plugging up their outside
entry points. We prohibit all bonafide food sources from storage and are now
switching over to glueless twin-walled polyethylene cartons with duplicate
labelling. Still with all that I've learned not to under-estimate these
critters. Is there anything else we can do?
