[Ql-Users] QL screw set needed :)
Howdy people! :D Finally I finished the mods on my QL. I'll put it on a proper page soon, but a list of the mods is: - Changed 7805 for a swtiching regulator, so no more intense heat - Changed ROMs' sockets (they were green...) - Changed ROMs for a Minerva home-made board (MK1 of course) - Changed 8749 for a Hermes coprocessor - Cleaned the green goo of the board with some MEK - Repaired power input (and I still don't have an original power supply, but I can live with mine) - Made a "connector" for the microdrives' cables, so no more messing up with bare wires for connecting to te board - Home made RGB cable - Home Made mouse interface + PS/2 mouse adapter - Changed that dammed push-lock connectors for the speaker and leds to more common (and easier to handle) dupont connectors - Disabled the RF modulator - 512K memory extension But something bad happened: Since I left it on a shelf (and another, and another, and another...) for some time, I lost the screws of the case. Is there a good soul who could sell me a set of the 8 screws and send it in a letter to Brazil, please? :o) Thanks! Alexandre --- ___ QL-Users Mailing List

I keep my point - wizchip offloads the work of the (already underrated) QL processor. Having the (entire) TCP stack into a coprocessor only makes things fast. I'd like to help in development. --- Enviado do meu Motorola PT550 Meu site: http://www.tabalabs.com.br - Original Message - From: Dave Park d...@sinclairql.com To: ql-us...@q-v-d.com Sent: Monday, April 14, 2014 6:39 PM Subject: [Ql-Users] Ethernet chit chat... I have been presented with two good contenders for an ethernet solution for the QL. There might be others; I am open to suggestions and may add more to the list. I would like there to be a *polite, friendly, respectful, constructive*debate about the relative merits of the two devices. Once you have expressed a view, that's enough. No need to restate it, unless you add something further. It is very important that discourse be *focused entirely*on solving the problem of getting ethernet onto the QL. Please read the data sheets and form an opinion about which would perform better on a QL at 7.5MHz or a SGC system at 25 MHz. There is already a TCP stack in existence; whether you wish to use it or not is a matter for you - one of the chips is a microcontroller that has its own stack. Here are the contenders: Wiznet WS5300 http://www.wiznet.co.kr/UpLoad_Files/Re ... _V128E.pdf versus Cirrus Logic CS8900 http://www.cirrus.com/en/pubs/proDatash ... 00A_F5.pdf If there is a clear consensus, I will assemble some functional prototype boards using the favored device, then send boards and documentation out to a limited number of people who express an interest in doing development work with them. There would be some gentle conditions: 1. You'd join a developer mailing list and report occasionally on progress you'd made to the other three people and me. Others could join the list to provide feedback, etc. The list would allow you to self-co-ordinate your efforts within the group. I would not be the boss of you. I would not own your work. There is no schedule or deadline. 2. Anything you do, once reaching a state of development greater than alpha, would be open source and freely distributable. A GIT repository or similar would be nice. 3. I would, upon release, host information and downloads at SinclairQL.com so people can explore the code or develop it further. If anyone develops anything to a point that it becomes possible to add ethernet to a future board, or standalone, I would work out a way to produce them for the community. If not, you can keep the card as a curio/plaything/collectible, or send it to someone else who has shown an interest. It's a surprise extra project. Up to 896K of static RAM, simply the fastest RAM expansion for the black box QL. It shadows internal memory and video RAM too for an extra boost. Also, it has a through connector, so it can make any floppy interface into a Trump Card beater! Should be shipping in late June UltimIDE Not much to report here. There is progress. I have laser etched the CompactFlash cards that will be included. They look amazing. There will be a lot more to report in 3-4 weeks... :) If anyone has any questions about the swap meet or Sandy developments, I will happily answer them here... RWAP will have stock of felt pads, QL on a Stick, Minerva and SuperRAM as they become available. They will also be available direct from the Sandy store. I have made the decision to not list prices or link to sale pages because this is not an ad - it's an update. Re: [Ql-Users] Developer assistance request.
May I add 2 cents to the subject? With the W5300 on-chip implementation, you depend on one specific manufacturer. If the TCP/IP stack runs on the QL side, one is more flexible to use different hardware. In my case, the NE2000 or Realtek on the Q40 and Q60, but the CP2200 on the Q68. Even TCP/IP over SER instead of ethernet is possible. Wizchip devices are around for about 10 years. I've used that with lots of products, with no troubles and cheap cost (facing a stronger processor to put an entire tcp stack into). Of course, anything is possible. But with wizchip, you need only a SPI connection and no stack whatsoever. In my case, it means a socket library, since existing internet applications were written in C, not S*BASIC. An extension which interfaces to S*BASIC is doable, just had low priority for me. I vote for basic, since wizchip takes most of the work. I'd even expand the capabilities of the old (and outdated) MCS-48 processor on QL, and put an AVR on its place, creating expansions like a dedicated I2C/SPI/TWI interface to the outside world. Maybe I need to get more into QL workings... :o) As always, I can not promise when I can finish something. So if you have already implemented a lot of things around the W5300 and plan to finish soon, don't let my info regarding the CP2200 hinder you. Sure! By the way, does the W5300 include a unique ethernet address? IEEE registration can become an expensive issue if you need to do it yourself. Not that expensive. But the MAC number can always be reused from an old (and broken) ethernet card, or like. ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

In the German forums, I meant. How many others like you will turn up, I have no idea. Soldering fine pitch SMD devices isn't that hard, if you have the right equipment, or tons of patience. I've done lots of these jobs without the right tools, and it worked. Took longer than reasonable, but it worked. If you want I can do a video showing an easy way of soldering SMD ICs, but I believe there are lots of videos like that on the web. Of course, as soon as I put my dirty hands on the project and have the boards and ICs on hand, I'm planning in doing a video showing how to build it :) And of course, I hope I can be of any help to the QL comunity with my simple resources. Re: [Ql-Users] Newbie question follows: How to join Minerva ROMand ToolKit II?
It took a quite an amount of email and phone support, even providing complete working samples, until someone (very skilled at building hardware) successfully reproduced the QL-SD. QL-SD has a much higher difficulty level than the other projects you find at the forums. Nobody else wanted to do it himself yet - for good reasons. Peter, I don't want to be disrespectful, but I can't see problems in soldering fine-pitch SMD devices. Of course the board will have to be made in a professional setup (ever tried OSS and other chinese low-volume suppliers? They make quite good boards for a very cheap price!) but I have a smd oven with proper reflow curve, and I'm used to building panels of devices with fine pitch SMD. This is what I do for a living :o) I'm crazy to try it :oD Thanks :) Alexandre ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
Re: [Ql-Users] Newbie question follows: How to joinMinerva ROMand ToolKit II?
Building QL-SD at home would be very hard, because of 0.5 mm pitch SMD components and a thin two layer PCB with 0.15 mm tracks. It took more than a year until someone came up, who has the skills and equipment to do it. I don't think so. I have resources to build a board like that here at home QL-SD is fast as a harddisk. But if speed is not an issue for you, there might be a simpler solution. From my Q68 project, I have spinned off a compatible SDHC driver which just needs three simple registered output bits and an input bit mapped to some specific adresses. A tinkerer here in Germany has successfully intergrated this concept into his own hardware. However, I don't have the time to support this repeatedly. Someone else would need to write instructions. Well, I'm not an expert in QL but I can try :o) Thanks! Alexandre ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm

Cool - I really had no chance to expect that you're a professional electronics manufacturer :) Well, I'm not that kind of professional you're thinking of. I work at home and make small runs of electronic devices for small companies which doesn't fulfill the numbers needed for a run on professional manufacturers. I work in my garage :o) Pity that our continents are separated by currency, shipment and customs overhead. Someone like you would be great to produce QL hardware stuff. It would be great, but I believe shipping in both directions (in to Brazil with very high customs taxes and out to germany) would take most of the profit. Anyway, I'm here to help if I'm needed. [Ql-Users] Newbie question follows: How to join Minerva ROM and ToolKit II?
Sorry for the newbieness :o) I've seen around the net photos of internal ROMs of Minerva AND ToolKitII. How do I join both codes? Is that a matter of just concatenating files or there is something I should learn? I need to get better educated about the QL system, but I still think it is missing a newbie FAQ :o( Thanks, Alexandre (Minerva Board Ready! I'll install it today :D) --- Enviado do meu Motorola PT550 Meu site: http://www.tabalabs.com.br ___ QL-Users Mailing List http://www.q-v-d.demon.co.uk/smsqe.htm
