Ofcourse it is horses for courses.

There are several ways to control image size before you get to jpegging.

From camera, RAW, SHQ or HQ and others depending on device.

Your graphics client (Oh how I hate that misuse) normally uses a 24bit BMP
you can crop before setting linear or pixel dimensions and/or pixels/inch or cm

Saving as you want it, if that is jpg you have control of compression
ratio, if you have had to redit for some reason you dont have to compress
again, your choice to choose or forget to adjust.

Then you could also print to a pdf file. The data size is controlable, from
enormous for large full colour with text overlay, such as Quark output and
favoured by offset printers.

To very modest bw for economical transmission or storage.

I could not find a pdf on Geof's site to download, I seem to remember from
a good while ago that pdf of a Toady was rather large.

The Survey should of been proof read before being published.

That was all my fault.
When testing the survey I did spot that there should have been an indication
to which was Strongly Agree/Strongly disagree but I forgot to ask Keith to
change this.

The spellings and inconsistencies were also all my fault.

I did try to incorporate the suggestions that had been sent in when it was
initially planned, and each time we do this, hopefully we will get better.

I notice that Keith and Dan have now added a comment to which is Strongly
Agree on the scale and Dilwyn's suggestions on some of my spelling mistakes
have now been corrected.

The reason for the lack of collecting a name or email address was down to the
idea that the results should be available to all and I did not want any
possibility that someone could complain about lack of data protection if they
could be identified.

Any comments about the survey are welcomed as I would like to see it run much
more regularly so everyone can see how we are changing.

I suppose while I am writing I do have a question?
Has anyone produced a virtual machine containing an emulator that could be
moved from machine to machine, OS to OS?

[Ql-Users] HDD problems

2008-04-13 Thread David Tubbs
I have a large suspect drive and in surfing for low level formatting info I
chanced on the following, just had to share the thought.

=
Fixing a hard disk crash

It's really not too difficult to fix your own hard drive, if the problem is
a head crash, or the infamous Seagate stiction problem, if you know what
to do. You will require #4/0 steel wool, Varsol, WD-40, a few hand tools,
and about 45 minutes.

First, you need a clean room, so make sure the garage door is closed before
you begin. Move those old lawnmower parts off the bench.

Disassemble the sealed unit and carefully wash all parts with Varsol. Bend
the read/write heads out of the way and then disassemble the platter stack.

VERY CAREFULLY buff the platter surfaces with the #4/0 steel wool.
This will remove any existing data, level out any surface defects, and help
to redistribute the magnetic media and fill in those pesky bad sectors
that most drives have.

Reassemble the platter stack, and using a .015 feeler gauge, bend the
read/write head back to the platter surface, using the feeler gauge to set
the gap. This is a slightly higher gap than the factory uses, but it
reduces the chance of head collisions with any flotsam you neglected to
remove.

Give the head and platters a good shot of WD-40 and reassemble the unit. If
your drive has a filter, replace it with a clean section of gauze pad. All
that's left is to low level and DOS format the drive, and you're back in
business.

I haven't tried this yet myself, but my friend's wife's cousin's,
sister-in-law's husband knows a technician who does it all the time.

Re: [Ql-Users] Connecting Disk Drives

2008-03-18 Thread David Tubbs
Hi Rich,

You must surely have something else in which to check the drives ?

I never used ED's but never seen fuses on flp's or HDD's

You did pump juice into your GC when you connected, did you create or
aggravate a problem on the card ?

DT

At 20:35 17/03/2008 +, you wrote:
OK so I have blown a fuse on a disk drive tonight - and still not
resolved the issue with my Gold Card

How did I blow the fuse?

Well I have 2 x bare ED disk drives and was going to fit them into a
case. They are jumpered as DS0 and DS1 to enable easy installation!

I powered flp2_ (DS1) and connected it to my Gold Card - the stripe was
on the side numbered 1 on the 34 way connector on the disk drive. Drive
was on constantly, so I turned the cable over and the light goes out.
DIR flp2_ and the QL tries to read a disk. OK - puzzling about Pin 1
but what the heck.

OK then connect flp1_ (DS0) the same way. Before I touch it with the
power cable (I had forgotten to turn off the psu), I plug in the flat
ribbon and BANG goes the fuse - now why?? turning the cables over should
never cause this, whether the drive is powered or not! Yes the other
end was connected to the Gold Card, but the QL was off

OK turn off the power.

Gold Card and QL on its own working. OK. Turn it off.
Reconnect the disk drive (flp2_ ) to see if that is still ok.
Turn everything on.

QL makes the horrible noise from the speaker I was getting with the two
JM ROM version QLs before.
Turn off everything.
Disconnect the disk drive - power on the QL on its own - fine
Plug in the Gold Card - again the horrible noise.

By the way, the one machine which had started working with the Gold Card
when I upgraded it to JS ROM, stopped working with it again last weekend.

Any suggestions!?

do not use a green wire. The only pin neither ground nor a given voltage
is the P(ower) G(ood) pin which is orange - but since this stabilises at
+5 VDC, I don't think that shorting to ground would be quite the thing

I have no knowledge of what is required by the Qx0 but I am sure you have
the full range from the AT pack.

I am not sure what is meant by shorting to ground, tho' it could be the
PowerGood needs to be taken low.

I remember that it is necessary to have a sufficient load on the 12v supply
or they do not work, but an HDD should suffice. Or a 12v auto bulb if needed.

The RU command (read unformatted - binary) is missing, and I lauded it only

Discovered as I wanted to change default devices in QRAM, just like

Ah, I see.

Yes of course, an editor or Filed or something similar could be used.
Some people prefer to have a dedicated program to do MDV to FLP

this was an existing old program it was a handy exercise to update it,
that's all.

It's there for anyone who wants it, those confident with editors or

I didn't mean an editor(s), in my minds eye I can still see Freddie
