Re: [Ql-Users] It's not a QL on a Raspberry Pi yet, but .....

2013-07-08 Thread Urs Koenig (QL issues)
Hi folks,

got my Raspi (just the board and a power supply) two weeks ago. Had to do quite
a bit of web research to get what I need to start my projects (which are -
among others - run QL software on it). Yes, SMSQmulator runs, stable, but is
too slow (especially the screen handling) for serious usage. uQLx (thanks to
Tobias Fröschle) runs well and with handy speed. In addition to the software
part, I’ve started to make some hardware for the Pi, 1st project completed is a
custom case for the PCB made out of LEGO bricks. Long story short, there are a
few videos on those topics on my YouTube channel (link in the message footer
below).

Enjoy the summer!

QL forever!

Cheers, Urs

[Ql-Users] QLers meeting in Switzerland 2011 - Coffee, cake and more...

2011-10-30 Thread Urs Koenig (QL issues)
Hi all,

it all started earlier this month with an invitation for coffee and cake in my
offices.
Yesterday afternoon
some of the Swiss QL fellows met. There was even a South German QLer who joined
the party. It was not only about coffee
and cake (even we enjoyed that). We found the time to do some QL tinkering.

Here’s the video:

The pictures are in the Shows/2011 Lake Valley CH folder of my Sinclair
QL Picture Gallery (see first link below).

Cheers, Urs

Re: [Ql-Users] Pengi

2008-06-17 Thread Urs Koenig (QL issues)
I loved Pengi back in 1986. It was a fast fun game even on a standard QL.
Would be great to see it back on track. What about a patched version
for emulators or even QPC2.

To be a bit more precise: this is stuff which is so old, that it must
be in some of the boxes still left at Im stillen Winkel or in the
cellar, still unpacked from the move.

Some people have shown general interest in Pengi ... I will report to
them as soon as I found something.

unfortunately, he has been unable to find a copy - does anyone else have
 one?

The QL 2002 DVD is now available to view for free online at
YouTube.

Both in Low Res (for dial-up users, although some problems may
persist -
Video and 56K Dial-up generally don't work well) and the full DVD
high
res quality versions. Its been split into manageable chunks to
aid
viewing, all less than 7 or 8 minutes each.

Just search for QL2002DVD and you'll find all of them - we
welcome
feedback.

Thanks to Steve Reyal who spent a lot of time transcoding it over
the
weekend - enjoy.

Darren.

Re: [ql-users] A QL Trip Down Memory Lane

2007-02-11 Thread Urs Koenig (QL issues)
Hi all

One of my remaining QL tasks is to let the ITC profs remember from
where the real experts/technologies are (were) coming from. Doing
that
I experienced the same impressions as Rick did. Once the young ITC
profs hear and see what and how a QL and QDOS operated some 20
years ago they get very interessted/impressed.

Eg. Our company is in a network of about 30 ITC companies. In
summer
2004 the monthly First monday event was organised by me around
my
private QL thing. It was named The roots, the cousins, the
innovations.
We had a very special guest. Tim Bucher, cousin of my wife and
Vice
President at Apple (at that time). Both Tim and I had very
personal
speeches and presentations. I did some live QL demos. Eg. having
100 jobs running in parallel under SMSQ/E compared to Windows NT
4
where NT went down on that. Tim did impress us all with his
inventions.
My computer museum was on display with different QL systems
running
software. We even had a working original Macintosh from 1984.

The 40 or so attandes were impressed and even today, almost 3
years
later people talk about it one day or another.

I just thought I'd share a recent QL experience with everybody!
The
company I work for is very keen on promoting personal development
outside the normal boundaries at work. Think outside the box is one
of
the MD's catch-phrases.

Anyway, as IT Manager of this company, it became my turn to
organise
something concerning to my field but not directly work related: so
I
organised a little presentation and history tour, using my
collection of
PCs as illustrations. People were able to have a go, play with
them,
run programs and generally see how computers have developed over
the
years. To illustrate my presentation, I used my ZX81 (the first PC
I
ever owned), BBC Model B, BBC Master, Spectrum+3, Amiga 1200, Z88
and of
course the Sinclair QL. I was wonderful to see the amount of fun
people
had with these older machines, and some of the younger members of
the
company were really surprised at what had constituted a computer
back
then! It's such as shame that for many youngsters today, learning
ICT
(as the schools irritatingly insist on calling it) is simply
learning
how to use Microsoft products . . . .

One of the most interesting comments was how cool the QL looked
. . .
it seems that well-designed retro is in

Re: [ql-users] Is there was any virus on QL ?

2007-02-10 Thread Urs Koenig (QL issues)
I remember briefly that one or some Germans which were member of
QUASAR wrote at least parts which could be used to build a virus.
Those parts adressed infection of an _exe and once such an _exe
was
started (EXEC) randomly infection of other _exe on the disk
occured.
As far as I remember infected _exe were some bytes longer than
uninfected ones. Binary compare of such files showed that the
startup
code in the _exe was modified and at the end of the file the
virus was
in place.

I would love to get a hand on this code/source/documentation.
Not to build bad things but to play with and understand in my lab.

met some viruses on Apple II, C64, and Amiga but I don't remember
if there
was some on QL..

So is there any viruses on QL ? I would appreciate any screenshots

Thanks,
