He made more from accountancy I reckon. The car only cost him around
£17000 - it was worth a lot more.

I have had three very good shows this year. Considering I only sell
hardware, and only for original/Aurora based machines, that is very
encouraging.

That would be a good idea - if advertised, it might attract more people.

He was, err, discrete about it.

I remember an incident at an Indian restaurant when he and John Norton
had a 'discussion' about something. Freddy ordered a dish of chillies
and managed to slip them into John's curry when he wasn't looking.
John requested a fire extinguisher soon after.

Freddy could manage this quite often. It happened to me in a hotel
where there was a minor dispute about a deposit payment with which I
was
doing quite nicely with thank you. Freddy behind me in the queue
intervened (not sure if he was trying to help or just p***ed off with
the holdup) and it ended up taking twice as long.

Do you remember the incident at that hotel in Eindhoven where the

Indeed.

I will _never_ forget him on foreign trips.

6:30 am at the 'Cap de Nuit' in Brussels. We arrive just in time- they
_close_ at 7am. Freddy has the statutory three omelettes - and gives
away the 'rabbit food'

The pile of egg/bacon at the Eindhoven motel - a good 9 inches high.
How come he did not f**t all day (8-)#

Bus load of suspicious IRA looking people in a Transit on the way back
from Eindhoven. I was happily joking with quite a dishy customs lady
about the bomb making equipment in my electrical toolbox. Freddy
marches up and announces (in his humorous way that we all knew) "You
have no right to do all this to him". Nice friendly lady turns into a
'real' customs officer.

Overnight ferry to Zeebrugge. At 4am I fall asleep watching Freddy
talking (at his usual express pace to three remaining sleepy people.
I wake up at 05:30 and Freddy is still talking at them - but I could
swear they were asleep!

Driving at a good 95mph round the Brussels Ring, with cars passing to
the left and right of me. He was grabbing my arm and saying 'faster,
faster'. The car was pretty new, and he actually was impressed at the
quietness and smoothness at that speed - quite something for Freddy to
like a Volvo. He was used to his explosive Mazda with rock suspension.
No ordinary car - he got it half price 'cos the person selling it didn't
realise it was a special ZX. it did 180mph, and he had proved it many
times.
He did wheelies in a hotel car park after a QL show - just to show what
it could do. He said he was doing 50 in a small circle.
He was _very_ proud of escaping from a whole batch of police cars on the
M20 - where he averaged 145 into London.
I escorted him back from a Paddington car park to home. Down a round
parallel to the station (from Bishops Bridge Road to Praed Street), he
was upset about my getting one car ahead of him. With Ben in his 'racing
car' he did 80 mph round the wrong side of a keep left sign.

What have I forgotten?

Life is so much quieter without him.

At least one majordomo service that I subscribe to manages to truncate long
sigs. I'm not sure if this is a part of the majordomo software or an
add-on. If the list owner can truncate long sigs then that would be a
blessing.

No, he was only up in North Wales for a day or two, he did say he was
still in or around London. As I was at work at the time, I kept
getting interrupted (in fact Freddy being Freddy supplied more answers
to the questions I was aksed than I did!)

Indeed. More to the point (John Taylor: take note) he said he still
uses Perfection for some tasks which he described as faster and better
suited to many of his needs than many of the PC Wordprocessors he
dislikes using).

Not all of those, but I did mention some. The conversation though was
pretty disjointed because of the interruptions and not very long as he
had a train to catch and he had a friend or colleague with him waiting

It's actually pronounced 'Freddy' (that's how he introduces himself to
one and all).

On the rare occasions he mentions his surname it is Vak-A (not Vatcha,
or Vassa for example). For years I misspelt it as Vaccha until someone

I had the pleasure of meeting Freddy Vachha (formerly Mr Digital
Precision Ltd) the other day at work. We had a brief chat while he was
waiting for a train.

Although he would hardly describe himself as an active QLer these
days, but he did say quite plainly that he still has a QL and Gold
Card, and still uses Perfection which he described as less frustrating
at times than many word processors he has used.

He said he was unaware of QL2000 last year, or at least if anyone had
mentioned it he'd forgotten about it, and may well have attended had
he known. He is open to invitations to such future events, as he still
has a soft spot for the QL, despite not using his that often these
days.

Those who know Freddy will be glad to know that he is still his usual
happy, bouncy self, happily making money (forgotten what he said he
was up to and where he lived now, should have written it all down and
used it all in evidence!)

I always thought of it as 'Vas ha', i.e, an 's' sound for the 'c' ...
then again I never asked the man himself :-), and it could just as well
be a hard 'c' sound as in 'Vac ha' ...

How in Heaven's name you is the pronunciation of Vachha? Is it vaKha or Va
-TSH-A

Don't laugh :-)

Do we have an email for him, as I suspect his old address no longer
works. I sent QL 2000 snailmail to 222 The Avenue, but he didn't return
the postcard.

It is amazing how may 'vachha's there are on the internet (ditto
'digital precision') without one useful hit.

[ql-users] Freddy Vachha

2001-10-22 Thread Dilwyn Jones
