Re: [q] Replacement Hard Drive for a Preforma LC 575

2005-12-24 Thread Brett Forrester

Michael,

Be sure also to check (or just replace since it's inexpensive) the
PRAM battery. This is located on the motherboard and provides power
to maintain necessary info for startup, like date and time, etc. If I
recall correctly, the 575, like the 630 series, uses an alkaline,
instead of a longer life lithium, PRAM battery, and if that battery
is shot, various odd startup problems can also result. Be sure to
consult the archived info on the Low End Mac site about the 575 for
additional information.

Good luck!

Brett

Hi,
I recently acquired a Preforma LC 575, though it seems the hard drive
has died because whenever I start it I just get a flashing question
mark.

Re: [q] Replacement Hard Drive for a Preforma LC 575

2005-12-24 Thread Matthew Lawrence
Changing the PRAM battery might be a helpful solution, in this case. A
severly weak PRAM battery can cause a whole host of performance
problems, from file corruption to funky hardware behavior. This might
also be a cheaper solution than a replacement HDD, and you're not really
out anything to change the PRAM battery, if your problem does turn out
to be a bad/non-existent HDD. In this case, either way you're simply
buying future performance insurance by changing the battery.

A flashing question mark on startup means that the computer is unable
to find a suitable operating system to boot from. That might mean the
hard drive is bad, but it might also mean that the OS is missing or
corrupt.

You can try and start from either a boot floppy or from a CD. If it
starts and a hard drive icon appears on the desktop you would simply
need to install or reinstall an OS on the computer.

Thanks for the tips Bill,
Unfortunately whenever I try to boot from the 'Install Me First Cd' or
the floppies that came with the mac, the message 'Welcome to

this is correct but i have been told that if it can not find a hard
drive then it wont be able to boot from cd or floppy.
Thanks agin,

Re: [q] Replacement Hard Drive for a Preforma LC 575

2005-12-23 Thread Chuck Bush
It certainly could be the hard drive, but it is not necessarily. The
question mark means the system simply cannot find a start up system. Do you
have an internal or external CD drive? Start the system with a OS CD, and
see if the hard drive mounts. You may just need to reinstall the Operating
System. When I maintained many of those in a school district, they often
forget how to use their operating systems, and I had to reinstall to totally
fix them.

Re: [q] Replacement Hard Drive for a Preforma LC 575

2005-12-23 Thread Chuck Bush
The reason I mentioned an external CD drive is often the stock CD drive that
came with the LC575 was not fast enough to boot the computer. Also, you
would do much better to start it up with a system 8, 8.6, or 9 (not 9.1 or
higher) CD than system 7. Even if you eventually reinstall system 7, I have
found the other OS CDs to be much better on emergency startup and repair.

If you do get it going with a CD, you probably should reformat the HD (Drive
Setup program on the CD), and then reinstall the system. You can run the
System 7 CD in the built in CD Player, while an external CD Player is your
startup drive. I have then found it helps to restart with the CD again after
installing the new system, holding down the option and command keys to
rebuild the desktop folder before actually starting the computer with your
new system.

Again, you may indeed have a bad hard drive, but if it is something else,
replacing the HD may not solve your problem.

Being a 68k, the LC575 will only go as high as 8.1.

The OP should probably open the back panel and look to see if there
is a HDD in there at all.

It will boot without an HD. But I have run into a few cases where it
wouldn't boot with a corrupted HD.

So try disconnecting the HD and then booting from FD or CD. If it
does boot then you can try (if possible) this:

Leave the data cable connected to the HD but leave the power cable off.
Boot from FD or CD.
Connect the power cable to the HD.
Launch Drive Setup.

Then Either

Try mounting the drive.
See if the drive is accessible.
Update the driver on the disk (sometimes the problem is a corrupt driver).

or

Format the drive.
