From this, it appears that φ is used for 500. This makes more sense. It must 
be a mistake in Layton's book.

I had never before heard of عدد الكتب. Were these used by Arabic-speakers in 
Egypt before عدد هندى? Or are they just the hand-written versions of عدد قبطى?

My apologies for posting in English.

I have been trying to learn Coptic from two English-language textbooks
