Thank you to all who provided great solutions on solving tearing
effect from
mobile mounts on thin autobody metal vehicles. It all may now be moot

because, We all should be aware of legislation being proposed in many
states
such as Driving While Distracted or Inattentive Driving laws.
These new
laws will curtail mobile radio operations. CT, NY, NJ and DC already
have
laws prohibiting people talking on cell phones while driving. A
proposal in
NJ while not yet introduced for voting but being formulated:
New Jersey clarifies that a distracted driver may be charged with
reckless, careless or unsafe driving when so warranted, a law
enforcement
officer may charge a person with a violation if that person, while
operating
a motor vehicle, engages in distracting behavior including, but not
limited
to, the use of communications technology such as wireless telephones,

pagers, facsimile machines, locator devices, AM/FM radios, compact
disc
players, audio cassette players, video players, citizens band radios,
and
dispatch radios; engaging in personal grooming; consuming food or
beverages;
reading; or tending to unsecured pets. So heads up, be careful, keep
one ear
to your state capitol and the other to the mobile rig while driving
under
those low hanging tree branches. Soon we may not need mobile
antennas.

You could scale the part values into a low band range.

The Z matcher is a pi section filter/tuner/match circuit
with a diode sampling line section built in. You could
find the scaled values for 6 meters in a lot of different
ARRL Publications.

I remember seeing that thread, but no one ever posted a concise
explanation of how to do that.

Is best efficiency of the amplifier -- when you get the maximum RF
power out for the least current draw?

That sounds fishy to me as overly-simplistic, so if this method truly is
better, someone may wish to explain it fully...?

Or... is having a Z-matcher slapped on late in production a typical
American company style fix... Just slap that thing on and they'll think
they have a fix for the problem?

No offense meant to anyone involved in adding it, it's more a jab at the
American business process where old products are neglected vs. new
products.

Knowing that the Z-matcher was added late in the MASTR II PA's life says
  two things to me:
1) Someone found and finally documented and quantified a real problem
with the design.
2) GE may or may not have fixed that problem properly, but saw the
problem as big enough to make a change.

Of course, that's the LOGICAL conclusion, and U.S. companies constantly
surprise me and do illogical things, like fix problems that don't exist
to counter the (false) claims of the other guy's sales and marketing pukes.

The real story could have been:
1) Hey boss, someone at company M keeps telling people our PA's blow
up. We found a small problem that affects like 5% of the deployed units
out there, but it's not really that big a problem.
2) Good, it'll give our sales guys something to say that we fixed.
Ship it.

Who knows...? Someone does.

Does it matter? Not really.

How do you properly tune the thing for maximum efficiency is all
inquiring minds really want to know. :-)

[Repeater-Builder] Re: Low Voltage Disconect

2006-04-26 Thread Dave VanHorn

I've been looking for some dc low voltage disconnects
and it apears Newmar has just the ticket.

LVD-12-30LVD-12-70 are two very usable units.

Sounds like a 6V relay, and a couple of resistors, maybe a zener.

RE: [Repeater-Builder] Low Voltage Disconect

2006-04-26 Thread Eric Lemmon
That's odd... all solar charge controllers worthy of the name include a
low-voltage disconnect as an essential feature, so there's no need for a
separate device. Was this a jury-rig?

Another radio site battery bank bit the dust yesterday!

The original installer didn't put in a low voltage
disconect and the solar charger went belly up (died).

If I can keep from being a cheap skate and making my
own...
