Really, to speed it up you'll have to look at your player code and try to get that as efficient as possible as it'll be running every single frame. Instead of processing a music file every frame and calculating values for the SAA registers on the fly, you could have all the register data ready in chucks to be OUT'd every frame, although it would eat up more RAM you would benefit from a faster playback routine. Chris - am I right in thinking that you (and perhaps Cookie) had written a fast e-tracker player? Cross Complier n Debugger (Was a thought (was RE: Moment of truth))
The problem is that without an IDE, then a debugger is pretty useless. You need something which will allow you to track the current position of code and refer it back to a particular section of source, and automatically take you to that source. But this could be taken the route SN Systems did and intergrated into MSDev say, this could then be AS ONE, but as Frode Said You don't NEED that. I have no problems whatsoever having source code in one window and the debugger/simulator in another. Compiling in a third. Actually, I prefer it. , and I would agree 100%, and we could take MS Os as a point and say intergration helps, but also cause more issues etc!!!. I have done Gbc/Gba/ps1 now ps2 without any form of intergrated Debugger , it helps but not in everyday codding , only in starting out, however on the sam theres not much else that could be done , just maybe a little better n faster :) The Compiler in question works wonderfully , and it only takes a small Watcom (or any other maker) to get working I personnaly don't think simcoupe should have anything intregrated as then it would no longer be a emulator in it purest form, but then again that's not my call lmao Just my 1/2 p worth (not worth anymore than that lol) C -- Sig On -- Ppps. RE: a thought (was RE: Moment of truth)
But tight integration = faster development = more software. It's an initial time investment which brings significant long-term benefits. Geoff But I have to disagree here, the coding mostly takes less time than the GFX/Presentation etc, how will intergration help you with that ? By this I mean , if you have pages of TXT to enter , and the IDE is trying to set it out as source with tabs etc, remember the coder is only 1/5 of the whole development process (Designer, coder,Artist, musician, testers), and sometimes they are the same person !! This is just my experince , nothing more, intergration only helps to a point , after that it becomes a hinderence. And as for more software , first we need to create good software , how many more Fifa's can there be, next there will be versions everytime a play is injured pmsl. C -- Sig On -- Ppps. Nope 4) How many bits of sam software have you got? About 30 Titles 5) Do you still actively seek new sam bits and pieces? Nope 6) Would you buy a new game for the sam coupe if the price was right? Nope 7) What price would be right if you would? See above lol 8) Would you develop a title for the sam still? Maybe , but would take something I really wanted to do 9) Would you help develop a title for the sam? If I could yes 10) Do you think that all the work put in to keep the sam alive is a waste of time? No, peeps will do what they want and if it makes them happy so be it 11) if yes to 10 then why? Cause peeps should do what they please with their time Just curious :D

I thought I might not make myself clear, oh well. I didn't mean the play of the game, ie the computer's play, I meant rather the gameplay as in the intuitiveness of the controls, the learning curve etc. Just silly things like not having the same after-touch mechanism on the game pads (contrary to the words in the printed manual, incidentally) so you need to use analog sticks which makes sending the ball in a straight line nigh-on impossible. And the goalie being computer controlled was a mistake. I understood why the decision was taken: novices -always- send the goalie the wrong way when control changes from a defender; but it just meant that I had less control over the outcome of the game than I had before. Same core was taken across to Gba if my info is correct That surprised me: given that it's an ARM chip, why not just use the code from the Acorn conversion? It's in relation to the File Library I'm putting together for the SC site. There's two camps in the copyright arguement - those who don't give a monkeys about copyright on SAM software, see it as a dead machine and think all its software should be free. Then there's the people who stick to the copyrights religiously (at least in public!) and see no way round it. I'm going to try and adopt a sensible compromise with copyrighted software. I will make every reasonable effort to get in touch with the author and/or publisher to seek permission to make the software available for download. If I fail to make contact, I will post on the mailing list, Usenet and this website, asking people to help me out. If after a further month, I still have not made contact with those involved, I will assume it's okay to make the software available. People's opinions will be taken into account, so that if it's reckoned that the author would not the software distributed, that's the way it will stay as far as this site is concerned. It's basically an attempt to keep SAM software available where possible, without annoying people. Thanks for any opinions...

The latest SimCoupé release has preliminary support for the Atom disk interface and an IDE hard disk. It lacks the UI to create/manage the disks, so you won't find any mention of it in the front-end. If you're keen to try it, you can do the following: - Edit your SimCoupe.cfg, and change the 'Disk2' entry to have a value of 2 (for 'Atom' instead of 'Floppy 2'). - Create a file called HARDDISK.DAT in the SimCoupé directory that's as big as the hard disk you want. 4MB will give you about 10 records (it's 800K per record/disk, with 512 bytes for the boot sector, and a bit more for the record name list BDOS uses). Note that the early support only works with BDOS version 1.6 or earlier, as the later versions added CD-ROM support which queried some ATA commands that were not supported (and BDOS didn't seem to fail them gracefully). The current development version (available in CVS) handles all BDOS versions, and doesn't require a HARDDISK.DAT file. Instead, it dynamically creates a virtual hard disk from the floppy disk images found in a sub-directory under the main SimCoupé directory. So, each floppy image found becomes a record - makes copying to/from the hard disk much easier. It still lacks a UI to configure this from the front-end, but it's in a much better state for that to be done now. Si

I've kinda moved away from SAM stuff these days and I'm mostly writing console games. Over the Summer myself and other people are working on a GameBoy Advanced game that requires an isometric engine that can also handle vertical walls and 45 degree slopes as well as flat bits. My problem is that I have no idea how to do this. In broad pseudo-code-esque terms, can anyone tell me a good way to represent a world like this, and a way to begin putting it all on the screen? Cheers Stephen McGreal (Mungus Software)
RE: Momentum question
Slopes Walls need no special stuff , as you would draw from back to front , so again its just 2D map , that's drawn isometric, collision will need 2 Height arrays , else all the normal 2D Style nothing else Honest if you can do 2d Scroll + deblock , you can do Isometric C -- Sig On -- Ppps. From what I can tell GBA is a bit limited in graphics memory but there won't be that many different textures to a level so I can work that problem out. The difference with momentum is that it has slopes and walls and I have no idea how to store or draw that... Cheers for the links, I will go and explore them to see what I can find, but if anyone can help me out in a bit more detail I'd be eternally grateful... Anyway, I've had a change of heart. I think the people who are holding on dearly to copyrights for games over ten years old are neing quite astute. The way I see it is this - nobody wants the Medal Of Honor or Black and White's of this world anymore. They resent paying £10 for Deus Ex on budget when for only £5 more they can buy Mind Games 1 or SAM Strikes Out. In fact, the PC, as I see it, is dead! All those businesses are tired of paying huge licences to Microsoft and are going to abandon using Windows 2000 and Office and instead run all their applications from SAM Basic, using Outwrite for their letters and SC_DTP for their presentations. Who needs networking? We've got the RS232 connector, ever reliable I'm sure you'll agree. Yes yes, hold on to them games, hold on. Keep them all locked away and keep the SAM market to the little closed shop it has always been. This topic is dead, admittedly, but at least we stirred some interest on the list for a bit. In the mean time, if anybody has any SAM .dsk images they want to zip up and email to me so I can sit and break all the copyright laws in the world from the comfort of my own bedroom, please do. I've got a few lying around somewhere, so perhaps we could start some kind of rebellion and eventually overthrow the evil rulers that try and stop us playing Manic Miner in 16 colours. The stupid thing about the entire debate really is that much of the SAM market that is still alives thrives outside of the UK where copright control is somewhat less than perfectly observed. --- On another note, Colin MacD's SAM History is, I'm sure, STILL hugely interesting and would, no doubt stir up some good debate on this list. Any chance of a few leaks here and there Colin, or are oyu waiting for all the protagonists to die first, like in the JFK murder case??!?!?! --- and finally, anyone know what Alan and Bruce are doing now after all these years? Anyone still in touch? Did they ever get back into the pc industry again? --- Enough from me for now. Yeah, I don't see why not, especially as there have now been a couple of requests for it. How long it'll take to go in is another matter though! I bet it'll actually end up being more useful for loading Spectrum tapes than SAM ones too. What I'm not sure is if some is already available, and therefore there wouldn't be much point?!! I noticed the comment in the TZX file says Don't Know If This Works ?, which suggests it's a blind untested conversion of the tape (we'll find out eventually!). RE: Help me :)
Okay some seemed to not full understand , so heres an overview There is a bod called Cowering . who does dos apps for renameing roms/images into a global regonised format for archiving and sharing etc He has just released his first GoodSamC , and it regonises 507 images , of which i have 244 , some of them was ripped from many of the websites/nvg , but missing 200+ seems high Now if you run this tool with commands Rename,List or New , it will do things like Rename file , List unknown files , List Newest addition files and It will output TXT files SamCHave.txt,SamCMiss.txt,SamCNew.txt etc etc , and as i have collected all other roms (GEn,Snes,Gbx,Gba,gg,Nes,Sms,Jag,Lyx,Speccy,Cpc,Amiga,St,C64,C16,V20,Vectrex etc etvc etv ), This is now his new project to identify all KNOWN sam images , and what a better place to ask but here for help on collecting all he has identified and submitting all that he has not So back to the original Question , if anyone wants to help then email me off list and i will emial the 48k app (zipped ) , and lets see what we can do to help C -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Chris White Sent: 23 April 2001 18:21 To: sam-users@nvg.ntnu.no Subject: Help me :) I have a exe that will scan thought a list of SAM COUPE Images , but I seem to be missing as few its 47kb so assume its small enough to post here , but request if you want If anyone can help out with collecting a Comlpete set them email off list C -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of David Ledbury Sent: 23 April 2001 00:27 To: sam-users Subject: Re: Ping? pong - Original Message - From: Womoteam [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: sam-users@nvg.ntnu.no Sent: Sunday, April 22, 2001 9:23 PM Subject: Re: Ping? Use Aley's 2SAD program, which can convert to DSK or SAD (versions 1 and 2) ftp://ftp.nvg.ntnu.no/pub/sam-coupe/utils/disk/2sad.zip Alternatively, create a new DSK file in SimCoupe, mount both images and do a disk copy between them :-) Dsks appear to be simple raw 819200 byte (800k) files. DSK files are that fixed at that size because they're always 2 sides x 80 tracks x 10 sectors x 512 bytes. The blocks of sector data are ordered: side 0 track 0, side 1 track 0, side 0 track 1, etc. SAD files have a 22 bytes header, which contains a rather large text signature and some geometry information. You can specify the number of sides, number of tracks per side, number of sectors per track and the bytes per sector. The SAD data order is different from DSK images, so you can't just chop the header from a 2:80:10:512 SAD image; instead it uses: side 0 track 0, side 0 track 1, side 0 track 2, etc. So what's a sad version 1 and a sad version 2? Is version 2 *exactly* the same, but gzipped? Indeedely-doo! And finally, SDF seems to be nice, but official format haven't been introduced yet. And - more sadly - the .SDF creator is not available. What does SDF do (which SAD doesn't do)? Though SAD provides some geometry control, it's a regular format used for the whole disk. So if you specify 1024 bytes per sector, that applies to every sector on every track. SDF represents a lower-level view of the disk, allowing more flexible control of what's in each track. So you can mix sector sizes within tracks, have unformatted tracks, and generally format up anything that you'd be able to do on a real SAM. It can also store deliberate disk errors, and allow tweaked ID FIELD values - the sorts of things that copy protected disks require. The overall SDF goal is to have a single disk image that can be used for any SAM purpose, as you can do with a physical floppy disk. The only trouble is that SDF still hasn't been finalised... There are SDF disk images of Prince of Persia and Lemmings on Chris White's web-site, but they're early test versions that I'd not really planned on releasing. I'll continue to support reading them in SimCoupe, but will only write/create newer format files. I've been discussing disk formats with an Atari ST emulator author, in the hope that we could used a shared disk format to represent disks for the same floppy controller. One technique often used by ST games was to store small amounts of data in the inter-sector gaps or data fields - something not covered by the original SDF format. The only way to read this hidden data is to use the 'diagnostic track read' command to read a raw track. To cover software examining any part of this raw track data we'd need to store the full ~6250 bytes for each track, which works out at 1MB of data. This diagnostic track read command seems like an ideal way to scan disks to create an image of each track - something that should hold all the data we need! Unfortunately, there's a weird quirk with the floppy controller that causes certain values stored on the track that gets the MFM decoding part of the controller out of sync, so anything read from that point on seems like garbage. So the data read using this command will be different (maybe in a predictable way?) from that read using the normal sector read commands, etc. So for the perfect disk image we'd need to keep the current ~960K of regular data, and also store the 1MB of raw track data just in case something needs it. I'm not actually aware of any SAM software that would require it, but it's something I'd like to have covered if we need it! Almost 2MB for a disk image is a bit much for general use, so I'm thinking of having it as an optional tagged field in the SDF image format, so the 960K version will be a 'normal' image (all these images can be compressed with gzip of course). I've disabled some of the SDF code in the latest SimCoupe while I continue to ponder what to do, but it's still on my mental ToDo list to be finished off 'soon'. If anyone has any thoughts on the subject I'm open to suggestions... Si

RE: Console Coupe
Hello my turn now :) Si Wrote I guess as long as sector 1 of track 4 is a regular 512 bytes in size, and contains the BOOT signature and some bootable code, it doesn't matter what the code is or what the rest of the disk looks like. SimCoupe only needs to be concerned whether the signature is present to know that it's worth pressing F9 to run the code... Trk4:Sec1 , can be anysize you wish ( think one of mine was 1024 , can't remeber which ) , But i also agree with Aley , in that a Rom Alteration should be made ( if this is decided a want thing by most ) , and should be added to the No Dos call to load a pre-stored image of rom/ram or just have a Image file with a dos on and boot that , that way the user could chose what dos they wanted just my say , and thank godness theres no more silly maths in here , we all know that x/0 = crash , and in a computer world thats bad , Chris
