Colin - just checking - did you get my subscription

--- Colin Piggot [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I am now pleased to announce that on the 8th June
 the prototype of the
 Mayhem Accelerator was finally completed.

With work on the accelerator starting in January
 2004, then first unveiled
as a work in progress with an initial (and dodgy!)
 12MHz speed at the ORSAM
show in November 2004. There's been plenty of
 hiccups along the way,
including the latest just a couple of weeks ago when
 I somehow killed the
prototype, so for quickness I built up another one
 from scratch and carried
on where I had left off as I really wanted to get
 the hardware finished!

What does the Mayhem Accelerator offer? Speed! It's
 what the Sam Coupé has
been crying out for and the Mayhem Accelerator
speeds up the Sam to 10MHz,
16MHz and 20MHz speeds, with uncontended memory
 reading for a further boost.
The final design also offers a 6MHz 'legacy' speed
as well, to run at stock
speed without having to unplug the interface.

Using 'BogoMIPS' (by Frode Tennebo) and 'Fractal
 Explorer' (by Dr Andy
Wright and Simon N. Goodwin) as two test programs to
 give some benchmarks of
the final design here are the results:

Fractal Explorer (generating the default Mandlebrot
 image)

 Normal Sam: 21.30 seconds
 Mayhem @ 10MHz: 10.56 seconds (202% speedup)
 Mayhem @ 16MHz: 7.20 seconds (296% speedup)
 Mayhem @ 20MHz: 6.06 seconds (352% speedup)

 BogoMIPS

 Normal Sam: 0.360 BogoMIPS
 Mayhem @ 10MHz: 0.748 BogoMIPS (208% speedup)
 Mayhem @ 16MHz: 1.208 BogoMIPS (336% speedup)
 Mayhem @ 20MHz: 1.513 BogoMIPS (420% speedup)

The final stage now is to complete the designs for
 the PCB for the
production version and build one up to go through
 testing, then the
Accelerator will be ready. All going well it will be
 available in 8 weeks
time at the start of August.

  Hi all,

I've written a few programs and a Linux kernel
 module that allow a SAM
Coupe to be used as a keyboard under Linux.

To use this, you'll need the SAM Comms interface
 and its driver disk,
  and a serial cable.

For the programs, and information on how to use
 them, see:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/wholehog/stuart/samkbd/index.html

It's very slow at the moment (but good enough for
 me to write this
email). I will try to write a faster version in
 machine code.

BTW, it uses the standard PC layout. If you want
 to use the SAM's
layout, it's best to create a new keymap and load
 it with loadkeys.

  Questions and feedback are welcome!

  Cheers,

 Hi,

Thank you for attending our ORSAM 2003 (Spectrum and
 SAM) show and helping
to make it a success. As the show is in its second
 year, and there is
going to be a Quanta workshop as well (with Z88 and
 ZX81 supported
officially now also), there will be more stalls and
 more visitors. The
show will be advertised in Retro Gamer, and a
 representative from the
magazine will be present at the show.

I hope you can join us on Sat, 6th November, 2004
 and would like you to
book again; everything is free as before. I would
 appreciate it if you
could let me know in advance of anything that needs
 publicising. i.e.
special offers, or items you want to buy. Tell me
 what you want, give
me feed back of your experiences from last year.
 Can you give a talk,
or know anyone else who can?

Please could you pass on through your channels news
 of this show, so
that the attendance will be good. There will be an
 official dinner
after the show, attendance is optional, venue not
 yet decided.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Depending on your time of arrival a train would be cheaper.
Taxi's are always present at Schiphol but extremely costly, a train runs
from underneath Schiphol right into the centre of Amsterdam, you could
take a taxi from the station to your hotel.

True, the Taxi's are expensive (90 Guilders from Schiphol to where we
stopped in Amsterdam!) but depends on if you have the patiencce to find the
right train :)

Is there anyone on the list who knows of anybody who may be interested in
obtaining a 512k SAM with various items of software?
If so, please let me know and I'll forward details on.

Interested - but mainly in the software (hopefully!) magazines!

While I'm here, can anyone tell me if they have heard any news about SAM
 community.

No idea - they're supposed to be re-releasing the Persona titles as
charity-ware and I've heard nowt about it :(

I've not been to the web site for ages, and once again I was contemplating
obtaining a copy of the newsletter for myself. Alas! The website has
vanished. Any help would be appreciated.

I think it's moved - Gav's about... but not heard what's going on yet :(

Thanks in advance for any help,

No probs!

 web : http://www.sam-coupe.co.uk

And a jolly good site it is too!

A few people have been emailing me asking about the url as my email
address
is the only one that appears on the old page at the www.samcommunity.co.uk
address as there is a small news bit (from last year!) linking to my site!

Anyone else recieving double copies of emails?

 Hi All,

Perhaps some of you would like to know that SAM Defender has been updated.

Great work Chris!

SAM Techy info wanted...

2001-10-05 Thread David Ledbury
Regular readers of CSS may have noticed a clever chap by the name of Mike
Wynne has been working on a very clever Spectrum Clone called Speccy Bob
(unfortunate choice of name perhaps ;) ?

http://www.speccybob.2y.net/

Well I've asked if he'd considered adding SAM Compatibility to the new
improved bells and whistles model... which he is interested in, in theory at
least, but would like some techy info

Can someone provide some...? After all, this is the closest we're ever going
to get to a new SAM!

Thanks in advance

David

PS: Can u send any relevent info to: Mike Wynne [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Thanks

Nope - that one wasn't me :-) Although I do remember having a copy of
it -
not an official one though - so either I or someone else I knew could
crack
 the protection.

Wasn't it Daniel Cannon?

Well... IIRC, that would mean that it was bad-track or missing-track
protection. We muthas with hge egos used different tricks ;-)

I remembered upsetting Daniel by cracking his protection in 4 seconds on

 IIRC Mr R P Brenchley's father.

Bob used the name as a pseudonym in format, he even published some of
my stuff under that name, and later as an alias on here.

That explains the odd postings I found a while ago under

Ken Elston ([EMAIL PROTECTED])

Bob and I fell out a few times over his use of multiple personas which
I did, and still do, feel is wrong. I tried to treat it as a game but
with hindsight I see that many here did not think it was a good game.

It may have been intended that way - but it's a bit like creating people to
back you up ... a bit easy to abuse as it turned out ;(

Now that so much time has passed I don't have any qualms about saying
what I believe to be the truth, but as I said elsewhere, even I don't
 know the whole story.

When I first started on-line Bob let me use the samsboss account on
pipeline as the news feed from my own isp was crap, hence many people
 thought I was samsboss.

I believe that he was also Bill Ritman but I never got him to admit
that to me. Again IIRC Ritman is his uncle or some such aquaintance.

Figures.

I never said any of that. You've not seen me, you never heard it from
 me. OK :-)

My lips are sealed

Actually, I'm with Mark on this; I'm surprised you feel anything about him

relevant to anything any longer. Let him go, forget him, otherwise you're
