I assumed he was referring to the previous Word formats. But my point is it's no use ordering M$ to "publish" the formats, Office2000 or otherwise, if you can't check if they correspond to reality. I don't think even the M$ programmers know, their software must be a can of worms by now. Maybe the approach that governments should take is (similar to the IETF): Only use "standards". Anything can be a standard as long as the details are published and there are _two_ independantly developed, inter-operating implementations. In order to be such a standard, and therefore used by the government, MS would have to publish enough detail for a re-implementation to succeed. It's _possible_ that the most inexpensive way for them to do that is to publish the source code. I doubt it, though, because the inter-operability mechanisms in, for example, StarOffice, seem to be getting pretty close. If Sun publish the source for StarOffice soon (as they've promised), then that must open a lot of this sort of thing up to scrutiny just as well as if MS had done so for MS Office. It would also satisfy the French politicians, I suspect. MS may be pretty worried. -- Andrew -- SLUG - Sydney Linux Users Group Mailing List - http://www.slug.org.au To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe in the text
Re: [SLUG] modules for sound
Your right, it is a CS4372. I've read the help files, yesturday, on the CS4372 and changed the conf.modules, and ran sndconfig, but it still didn't work, I'll have a go at modeprobe and insmod you need to configure the modules in /etc/conf.modules. If you are running RedHat, try using 'sndconfig' (as root); this should be able to set up your sound drivers for you. I'm not sure how any other distributions automate this. Otherwise, you will have to do the configuration by hand. If you are not familiar with this (and with commands such as 'modprobe' and 'insmod') have a read of Documenatation/modules.txt in your linux source directory. I don't know the details of the CS4372, but I'd imagine its based on the CS4232. Have a read of Documentation/sound/CS4232 to see how to set one of these up. i think you have to wait for the small rectangle to flash on the right hand side upper corner of the screen. when you see this hit F10, or F12, can't remember. this will call up the configuration screen. i think this screen configs the bios as well. When booting, watch for the white, filled rectangle block to appear in the top RIGHT hand side of the screen {just after the double beep from the BIOS, usually}, then press F10. Re: [SLUG] Arkeia no go - any other backup solutions?
On Thu, 27 Apr 2000, Richard Lane generated: How about Amanda? http://www.amanda.org That was I was about to try, it's a client / server open source backup solution. Wasn't much good 3 years ago when I last tried it, but it has suposedly improved a lot since then. Does anyone on the list have any experience with it? Yup. We use it at work with a 4G DDS-2 tape drive, and it runs once a night from cron. Very smooth. The only problem i've had with it has been due to cron deciding not to run. I suggest getting "Unix Backup and Recovery" from O'Rielly, also look at www.backupcentral.com, the website behind the book. There is a whole chapter devoted to amanda. It's quite configurable, it claims to work with jukes as well as single tape drives, optical boxes, write-once drives, etc, though i've not had the hardware to try out anything fancier. It is based on tar or dump, but from the way it lays out the backup on the tape, this isn't a shortcoming (you are given instructions on how to recover from tapes when the amanda system packs it in too, using mt and tar) As it's free software, it does require a lot of work to start it up. Previous backup experience would make it a lot easier (something I didn't have ;) But it's well suited to our operation, and i like it ;) -- jamesw Hoju Keyboard solo! skskskskskskskskskskskskskskskskskskskskksksksksks -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- SLUG - Sydney Linux Users Group Mailing List - http://www.slug.org.au To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe in the text

Re: [SLUG] Trouble with ftp
Simon, The user is listed in /etc/ftpusers and the permissions on that file are 755 Big big mistake, ftpusers is a deny file, put the use you DON'T want access to the system in here. And yes I agree, Me thinks that this is the wrong way round, it should be unless you are specifically granted you are denied. But as with every thing Linux you can fix that by editing the file /etc/pam.d/ftp and changing the first line so that sense=allow instead of sense=deny. rgds Pete -- SLUG - Sydney Linux Users Group Mailing List - http://www.slug.org.au To unsubscribe send email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with unsubscribe in the text
[SLUG] ppp / gateway setup
Hi, my thanks to everyone for the PPP replies, they were really helpful. I finally got connected using netcfg, and I noticed pretty much everything was set up except the modem init string. I'm still not sure which files netcfg looks at, and how it knew where to find them. That is one thing that is making me uneasy, but I'll try finding out. Now to my new problem, I have a working RedHat 6.1 dist installed on a PII. I have a 486 that I want to use as a gateway, with just the ppp and routing stuff. I was going to try an ftp install (before transplanting a CD drive), using the PII in which I would host the RedHat CD. A previous RedHat 5.2 bootdisk gave me the option of installing from ftp, but 6.1 did not... I am forced to install the CD drive. After restarting from the bootdisk, I get up to the installation part where it asks if I want to add other devices. After selecting Done, the installer starts loading, and after a minute, it says it has caught a signal 7, and is exiting abnormally. Does anyone have any ideas of what could be the cause of this? Hi Michael, Don't use telnet over the internet unless you like other people sniffing your details and logging in as you. Use SSH, turn telnet (and nearly everything else) off. The timeout thing is a Redhat default configuration issue - someone who likes Dead Hat can probably let us know where its stored if you really want to change it. [SLUG] Automated DNS entry question
Hi, Suppose I have a machine (domain.com) in the US with a static ip, that is also a DNS. Another machine (ftp.domain.com) is the one I use at home to dial in to my ISP, and has a dynamic ip address. Both machines are running Linux. When I dial in through my home machine, I want it to automatically update the old ip in domain.com's DNS entries to the one just assigned by my ISP. Basically, as long as the home machine is online, I want there to be no trouble accessing it using the name ftp.domain.com. Is this the best way of doing this? Re: [SLUG] dialin products
You could just grab a p200, stick in a multiport serial card and plug in lots of modems. Alternatively you could use USB modems and skip the serial card bit. However im not too sure of the state of usb modems in linux. www.linux-usb.org. You cant use them in NT4 as it has no USB stack and MS arent going to make one. I saw one from some company (sorry i cant remember) that HP uses for its printers in NT. It seemed ok, it ran in your system tray, however i only had a logitech camera to test with it and no it didnt work (Well it saw the device but couldnt provide a driver) anyway yeah, i dont know about isdn, but i think usb modems are potentially a good option for small dial in clusters.
