[RCSE] F3J Team selections

2001-09-13 Thread Tom Copp

This was my 3rd team selection (2 F3J, 1 F3B) and I really like the high
level of competition you have at team selections. The normal TD contest like
the FSF, are more social events and much less challenging as a whole. Don't
get me wrong you don't see my name at the top of the leader board at most
contests but I like good high level competition and I found it at the team
selections every time.

Thoughts for next time:

Team Protection: In the future I would like to see 4-man team protection as
the norm. F3J is labor intensive and we all say we want more participation
in F3J contests. 4 men are the max allowed on the field, 1 pilot 3
helpers. If everyone on the team is also a pilot then you don't need to
Hire a tow man. Of course in the fly off all protection is out.

Carrying scores: For us bottom feeders carrying scores wont help us make the
team at all but it does allow the better pilots to win a competition not a
crap shoot.

2-man tow w/stake: It has worked every time for me and it equals the tow
power available. With a 2-man stake tow and a little wind the launch power
is very equal for all the teams.
I am sure there are 40+ other stories about the F3J team selection, for me I
would like to thank my teammates for caring my weight thought the
competition (I couldn't tow this time) and I would like to thank SOAR for
hosting the selections and rounding up the workforce to put on a good show.
I know my club in So Cal wouldn't have the manpower to run such an event
If you like great competition and want to learn more about the finer points
of our hobby I highly recommend getting involved in the team selection
process, until we get more FAI type events in the USA it's the only game in
town. BTW. Aren't you all bored with the regular launch and land contests
yet?

Which 10%? That would mean the terrorists would have been allowed weapons also.
I would rather relinquish my pocket knife than have any weapons on the plane. Kick
'em in the balls. If the passengers would have known what we know now, they would
have rushed them all together - can't rush an automatic weapon that easily.

 - How can we make sure, or at least fairly sure, this won't happen
 again?

Yes, that is the question. Last week most Americans would have bulked at
being photographed and fingerprinted before being allowed to board an
airplane. Perhaps not today. I do not believe my personal freedom would
be
diminished if required to have a 'domestic' passport
SNIP

I have a real aversion to the knee jerk reaction of losing more freedoms in
the name of safety
Benjamin Franklin said
Those people that would give away their hard earned freedoms for security
will end up with Neither!

Any jerk can have a false identification card and get on to a flight.
If they had 3 or more people, they wouldn't even have needed weapons.
Most people freeze and deny what is going on until it is too late to react.
An armed guard or flight crew (with a better cabin door) is the only thing
that could have thwarted this sort of act. They will also have to have a
protocal wherein the crew and passengers are expendable rather than giving
up control of the plane.
I have heard they are already screening for knifes and even plastic cutlery.
This is utter nonsense focusing on the weapon instead of making examples of
criminals before anything escalates to this degree.
There are plenty of sharp objects that will make it through a detector.
Maybe they should pass out large knifes as you board the plane.
How far do you think a hijacker would get against an armed mob of passengers
now?
I'm not trying to start a flame war, we are all in a bit of a rage, but more
public control is ALWAYS the worst solution and it never works anyway...

Gordon,
Jim's animal friend was Joe Dirr, of the Cincinnati Club !!
Joe towed the whole event, primarilary for the McCarthy team as a relief and

Based on what he saw, the whole contest, Joe has gone and bit the dust and
now has a couple of fine F3J machines on the way...guess that he figured out
that flying was gonna be even more fun that towing..
Look for him in the future...

So what did happen? What was the REAL story behind Gordon flying out of
 turn? Any other facts?

There was some confusion (most of it in my head) as to which round we were
flying and who was in it. We had a 4 man team, and as such flew in *every*
group in *every* round. I stepped up to fly one group early (in Darrell
Zaballos' slot), an error which was not pointed out by the official timer
(who had the pilot's name on the score card for reference). Not that it
was the timer's responsibility, but after a day and a half of
Gordon/Joe/Gavin/Darrell/Gavin/Joe/Gordon/Darrell/Darrell/Gordon... You
get the point. Or maybe not. I can blame it on jet-lag, since we were
still pretty much on Czech Republic time during the trials.

After the flight the error was detected, the CD (Phil Renaud) was presented
with the facts: I, as team manager and pilot, fouled up. His choices
were:

1) Zero both of us.
2) Zero Darrell for not flying in his slot. Let me fly in the correct
slot.
3) Zero me for being stupid, let Darrell fly in my slot.
4) Apply mercy, swap the flight order.

Phil went for #4. This went unprotested at the contest.

Stop just throwing insults, and explain SIMPLY AND CLEARLY what your
perspective was and let people know. Right now there is no one on your
 side.

The other controversy: 4 Man Protection

The CD decided to extend protection to 4 man teams (from the original 3 man
team protection). There were two 4 man teams, and no teams larger than 4.
The CD put the change in protection to a vote and no team opposed the
procedure change.

I think that Phil's decisions at the team selection were strongly driven by
a desire to see the team selected in the air, rather than in the usual
ground/rules war that seems to accompany every FAI event.

One Last Note:

I'd like to thank my team mates (Gavin Botha, Joe Wurts, Darrell Zaballos)
for whatever it was they did (and it was plenty, to be sure) to get me on
the team. Huge thanks go out to John Asplund (tower and caller), and the
towing services of Jim Bacus, Rick Griebenow, Karl Miller and Jim's animal
friend (whose name regrettably escapes me). You guys were great, and great
launches were the norm.

have sent the person from whom I bought the plane but I suspect he has not

but they have not answered.

Does anyone have the documentation that lists the control surface setup and
the CG?

Any help would be appreciated.

 - How can we make sure, or at least fairly sure, this won't happen

Silly as it sounds, why not put sling shots and steel marbles in every
seat? Individually not much damage can be done, but passengers as group
could subdue a few individuals with knives. This or any other majority
rules type weapon would help, and reduce the risk of harm to the
passengers (sling shot has some range). Supplemental bats to finish
off the job might help as well.

Haveing a good flight without a official timer made into a reflight?
It always helps to have your own unofficial timer. Usually the CD
will accept that if there is a problem with the official time. We
really ought to have two official timers for each pilot, but where would
  you find them all?

After we get two official timers for every pilot we can then work on having a
field large enough so that every team has an exclusive 200 meter circle to
operate in...(or maybe a giant turntable to set the field into the wind) I
would propose that we have turn signals on our planes to signal lane changes,
but I'm guessing nobody would use them...

Hey, no one is bitching about the voice on the official clockMaark

Now that you mention it, how about a count down to the start of prep time?

And while I'm at it, a word of caution to nobody in particular. Remember,
only one helper within 15 meters of the landing spot. I know that the towers
can come up and help spot and call, but when the move is made to the landing
spot, only one helper can go along!

[RCSE] Artemis K/C for Sale (New in Box)

2001-09-13 Thread Jane Langhofer

Fellow Soaring Enthusiast,

I have a brand new Artemis K/C for sale. I have just received this
kit a few weeks ago, after waiting for months. This is my very first hollow
molded ship and after inspection, I realized that I could never fly it at my
slope flying site. There are just to many rocks and I would destroy it on
landing. Live and learn. I have not done anything to it. It still lives in
the box. It sports a custom paint job (blue, red and white). I would just
like to recover my investment of $850.00.
The Artemis is an all molded thermal duration or F3J glider.
Evolution of the very popular Hera, the Artemis KC (kevlar/carbon)(F3J)
received some technical improvements. The Hera has great handling and is
very hard to beat in thermal duration contests, it also has the best value
to performance ratio on the market. The Artemis retrieves the best from the
Hera and adds the following features:

The center panel now has one degree of dihedral.
The wing saddle integrates the wing to the fuse more aerodynamically.
The tips feature a very subtle curved shape.
Premolded servo pockets, can receive JR341 or similar servos.
Top exit for the flap linkage, leads to a stiff and very accurate flap
control.
The tail attachment has been modified to ease the control attachment.
One ballast tube standard.
Longer nose to ease balance with less lead.

If anyone is interested in this excellent kit, please e-mail me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] . Thanks.
