Re: [RCSE] Nats News...

2003-07-11 Thread Jack Iafret
The days of entry level ships in RES has been over since day one. Any time
there is a competitive event with only a limited restriction on the plane
(one-design is an example of a restricted event) the event will quickly
progress to a more money, more experience event and it should.

I do not condone restriction on the plane development but for the entry
level people out there so believe that ranking the pilot is the only way to
go. I think we all know who the top 10 or 20 are in the country in TD and in
a 6 to 10 round event (as RES and NOS should be) those 10 guys will always
be in the top 10. I think we all know that but compete just to see how close
we can come to the masters.

BTW, if you want to compete with old technology, fly NOS but even here the
experts will always win over enough rounds so again its the pilot, not the
plane (within reason).

Bacus, I was out Wednesday with the RESQ I picked up from Ben in Louisville
and because it was a rare calm day in Michigan kept thinking how easy this
was compared to the moldies. Took the E4 out for practice and got tense all
over again. If I could land the RESQ I would probably do better in UNL than
with the moldies especially if the thermals are way out there (the eyes are
going and the moldies are hard for me to see). I guess what I am trying to
say is that RES takes some of the load off the pilot and as you get older,
this is not a bad thing.

Dunno, Jim, but I'm glad to see it. Maybe it's esthetic -- there's
something about the look of a bent-wing plane, especially one you can
 see through.

I expect the commercial availability of the Ava to spur a mini-boom in
RES. It's a wonderful plane to fly for sport or competition, different
in so many ways from wooden planes of yesteryear. Perhaps more
thin-wing, carbon-spar RES planes will evolve -- that would be cool.

I think there are some very nice RES ships out there, and I have one that I
am considering flying in F3J because I think I could hit FAI landings with
just a spoiler on this model. (And I think it would make a killer light
air ship)

BTW, I donated a RES-Q to the Nats raffle this year, some lucky Nats worker
will win a very nice RES model this year.

Jim,

I dunno I think its because its another chance to compete. And lets
remember that RES is unlimited in wingspan so you don't have to be as quick
to find lift off of launch as you do with 2meter, nor do you have to fly as
well to get hang time. Some guys value these attributes.

Just to be contrary, I don't really see any hi-tech RES ships out
there. Sure some are made of fiberglass and carbon but I don't think that
buys you very much. These materials are no longer uncommon or hard to
obtain. A good spar on a built up will keep you in the game if you are
adept and practiced at flying it. The real leveling factor is that you can
only have rudder, elevator and spoiler controls. That means fewer servos
and that a 4 channel radio can do the job. How hi-tech can a plane be if
you don't need a computer radio to fly it? ;-) It appears to me to be a
nice step up for new guys who want to move up from their initial 2meter
ships without jumping directly into a computer radio and all those
additional control surfaces and mixing nightmares. It is also an
inexpensive long wing 2nd ship for backup for the primary unlimited ship.

As for competition, I don't see how we could rationally get much simpler
than RES unless we promulgated a single design ship. Nostalgia doesn't
even level the competition playing field that much since even in nostalgia
wing span and designs vary greatly. And for those of us who took up RC
soaring after 1990, nostalgia is kind of a mystery. Those are just old
airplanes to us.

Just some rambling thoughts

The Bubble Dancer and its side kick the AVA are good examples of high
tech RES in my mind. Not only for the construction techniques, but the
entire design of these models are quite interesting.

Dudes, I'm a sloper. Yet, even I find pleasure in thermaling a polyhedral!
I consider thermal and polyhedral to be almost synonymous.

What looks sweeter than a Paragon cranked into a thermal? Or, a GL? Sure
they won't do 50MPH to the next thermal. But, they just LOOK RIGHT. And I
love the way they wrap.

So for all practical purposes this will be the east side NATs. If the west
side guys have a NATs of their own (??) maybe we could have a fly-off in the
middle of the Mississippi with float equipped sailplanes : ).

That illustrates what I was saying about the Ava. The light moments and
huge spoiler produce a really excellent landing machine, much different
from the RES experience most of us are used to.
