Re: A pain in the Arnold...

2018-06-01 Thread Stephen Blair
Hi

You don't mention whether you checked the Arnold log for warnings.

If it was tessellation errors, then you would see it with or without a
texture. You can try using the Utility shader (Primitive ID with polywire)
to check that.

The Utility shader also has UV modes for debugging.

Re: Arnold old and new

2018-04-20 Thread Stephen Blair
Arnold 5.0 and earlier can use RLM only, so if you buy new licenses from
Autodesk, you need to request previous versions licenses for "old Arnold"

New licenses use Flexlm.
Previous version licenses use RLM

*Which features were especially useful?*
The ability to built solid output pipelines with the creations of
customizable passes was without any question a very important Feature in
XSI.

These Features where also very usefull:
1. GATOR to transfers any surface attributes
2. Ultimapper to grab normal maps and occlusion maps.
3. The Render Tree to build complex shaders
4. The Fxtree to do practically everything with image clips.

Re: Softimage to Arnold going open source

2018-02-21 Thread Stephen Blair
Hi

If you purchased a license, you purchased an Arnold license. SItoA itself
is not licensed.

Permanent licenses are permanent, and work with any Arnold released before
the version date specified in the license file.
The version date is the expiry date of the support contract.

If you renew your support, then you'll be able to use the new Arnold
versions as they are released.

If you let your support expire, then if you want to use a newer Arnold, you
need to either buy a new permanent license (available until 30 April) or a
subscription.

Re: AD contract emails about Arnold

2017-09-05 Thread Stephen Blair
It's a migration of your existing contract. If the dates are wrong, contact
arnold.sales

An Autodesk equivalent of your RLM license is provided. You don't have to
use it, but if you renew support, your next license will be an Autodesk
license, not an RLM license.
At that point, you'll have to use the Autodesk licensing system.

It's called Arnold 2018 because you get a 2018 license token. The link
under your account should just take you to the solidangle.com download page.

There's no price for the new contract, it's just a migration of the
existing contract.

Renewing maintenance is 225USD per year.

Re: Flexlm problem

2017-05-22 Thread Stephen Blair
You can probably ignore FlexNet Licensing error:-125,147, since this
happens only when you're running diagnostics:
http://upandready.typepad.com/up_and_ready/2012/02/general-licensing-flexnet-licensing-error-125147.html

I'd do a Status Enquiry to see what licenses are available
and on the client, check for lic errors, or set FLEXLM_DIAGNOSTICS=3

What is Softimage Scaling Anyway?
January 30th, 2006 by Brent McPherson - Viewed 20572 times -
http://www.softimageblog.com/archives/84

and from isner.com:

*Visualizing Softimage Scaling Transforms*

So the next algorithm we are going to look at is the default in XSI, built
for the purpose of defeating shearing distortion problems.
First lets start with the algorithm:

*Scale Change Matrix = Child Scale Matrix * Parent Scale MatrixRotation
Change Matrix = Child Rotation Matrix * Parent Rotation
MatrixTranslation Change Matrix = Child Translation Vector * Parent Matrix
(full SRT)*

*Global Matrix of Child = Scale Change Matrix * Rotation Change Matrix *
Translation Vector (Extracted from Translation Change Matrix)*

as a simpler set of instructions:

1) Get the difference between the Parent and Child's scaling
2) Get the difference between the Parent and Child's rotations
3) Multiply the translation vector by the full Parent Matrix ie (place,
rotate and scale the start of the stick in the space of the Parent)
4) Place the Scale and Rotations from step 1 at the end of that vector.

In diagram form:

So you can see the end result is almost identical to Classical Scaling. In
fact the result is exactly the same expect for when you have non-uniform
scaling. If you ever needed to mimic or break down this behavior yourself
in scripting, here's a function that does it. It could probably be better
optimized, but I kept it simple for legibility:

/*
Softimage Transform Multiply
*/
function SoftTransMul(inTrans1, inTrans2){

var scale1 = XSIMath.CreateVector3();
var scale2 = XSIMath.CreateVector3();
var rot1 = XSIMath.CreateVector3();
var rot2 = XSIMath.CreateVector3();
var trans1 = XSIMath.CreateVector3();

var scaleChange = XSIMath.CreateVector3();
var rotChange = XSIMath.CreateVector3();

var S1 = XSIMath.CreateTransform();
var R1 = XSIMath.CreateTransform();
var S2 = XSIMath.CreateTransform();
var R2 = XSIMath.CreateTransform();

inTrans1.GetScaling(scale1);
inTrans1.GetRotationXYZAngles(rot1);
S1.SetScaling(scale1);
R1.SetRotationFromXYZAngles(rot1);

inTrans2.GetScaling(scale2);
inTrans2.GetRotationXYZAngles(rot2);
S2.SetScaling(scale2);
R2.SetRotationFromXYZAngles(rot2);

// Get result of multiplying scale + rot
S1.MulInPlace(S2);
R1.MulInPlace(R2);

// Get the position result from the matrices multiplied

inTrans1.GetTranslation(trans1);
trans1.MulByTransformationInPlace(inTrans2);

// Bring it all together
var resultTrans = XSIMath.CreateTransform();
resultTrans.MulInPlace(S1);
resultTrans.MulInPlace(R1);
resultTrans.SetTranslation(trans1);

return resultTrans;
}

//--

So the next thing to look at is how these transforms cluster together in
hierarchies of objects.
