Re: Design of Cards for Campbell Stokes Sunshine Recorder
Hi Brooke, The cards have to be impregnated with a fireproofing solution or a mini bonfire may result. I have, I believe, two types of cards to fit my slots. I don't remember what each card type is meant for, however. The glass spherical ball is about 92 mm diameter. One card is 35.9 mm wide with straight sides; the other card is 30.18 mm wide with curved sides. Both cards have a blue face with white nomenclature; printing on the back is in German. If helpful, I could scan the cards. Larry On 4/18/2014 4:05 PM, Brooke Clarke wrote: Hi: I just got one of the Campbell Stokes Sunshine Recorders but it came without any of the cards. The fireproofing is saltpetre if I remember correctly. Mike Shaw - No virus found in this message. Checked by AVG - www.avg.com Version: 2014.0.4355 / Virus Database: 3882/7365 - Release Date: 04/18/14 --- https://lists.uni-koeln.de/mailman/listinfo/sundial
Re: Design of Cards for Campbell Stokes Sunshine Recorder
I think Mike may have the wrong information. I can speak from personal (teenage) experience of making very good fireworks and soaking paper in saltpetre solution for the touch paper, which will then smoulder nicely. Saltpetre is one of the essential ingredients in gunpowder. I suspect that there are other nitrogenous compounds that have fire prevention properties, but certainly not the nitrates! Re: Design of Cards for Campbell Stokes Sunshine Recorder
There's a very full and well-illustrated description of the Campbell Stokes sunshine recorder, with a reproduction of the equinoctial card in Handbook of Meteorological Instruments, HMSO 1956, reprinted 1961. This tells us, inter alia, that the cards are made from good quality paste board, not ordinary paper. The Meteorological Office specification lays down that their length must not change by more than 0.01 inch after immersion in water for 18 hours, and must not contract by more than 1 per cent on redrying. I can't help adding that as youngsters we painted designs on paper using a strong saltpetre in a continuous line with a paper toy pistol 'cap' at the end of the trail. When thoroughly dried and ignited at the start, the 'picture' appeared gradually with a small 'bang' on completion. Happy days!
