Ford and Dodge do not offer the diesel in the 1/2 ton I have asked
dealers specifically and been told they don't.

Re: [biofuel] Is it OK to heat BD to remove water?

2002-04-15 Thread Joe Giacomini

Re: [biofuel] cloudiness (followup un my 2nd Titration - to Keith)

2002-04-14 Thread Joe Giacomini

I have had a continuing problem with that also. The only thing that has worked
is to reclaim the alcohol, or boil it off, first then let the BD settle out for
several weeks at which time I get an inch or two settling out of 5 gallons.
This is at varying temperatures that were between 55 degree F and 75 degrees F
in our
sun room in the winter. Drain/syphon off the clear stuff and then wash. Some
thing is remaining in the BD I have tried very low amounts of Lye to high
amounts
and nothing seems to work. With higher amounts of lye It will be clear at room
by won't wash clear. It does seem that it clears better no matter the amount of
lye used with the alcohol removed first. Let's keep in contact on this one.

Christian wrote:

 Hi Keith,

My batch of BD settled the glycerine out nicely, though the BD still seemed a
bit cloudy. It was translucent, but not crystal clear... Is this suspended
 water?

I now bubble-washed it (not for long... the first few minutes produced an
emulsion of BD+water which seemed murky white-ish/yewllow-ish.

Now I«m settling it. The first wash water is very white (almost like milk).

QUESTION: If the BD remains non-crystal-clear after some washing settling,
should I take it to 105 deg C for some minutes?

 Best wishes,

 Christian

Re: [biofuel] Biodiesel

2002-04-11 Thread Joe Giacomini

I routinely get 0.87 to 0.88 for biodiesel from WVO. 0.89 is probably
ok if the wash left a very clear liquid. You should be able to read
text when looking through 20 cm of BD at room temperature or even
slightly below. If there is any cloudiness you may have left over water
in the mix.

Re: [biofuel] Gel point benefits of Acid Base processing

Do you have a comparison between batches processed in the single step
method and in this dual stage method from the same starting material?

Keith Addison wrote:

Is there some quantitative data on how the gel point is improved by
using the two stage conversion process at:

 http://journeytoforever.org/biodiesel_aleksnew.html

,known as the Foolproof method for making biodiesel.

This method has twp parts where acid (sulferic acid and methanol) is
used first to remove FFA's then a base (lye and methanol)to perform
the transesterification. It seems logical that this should greatly
 improve the gel point.

Lab tests of fuel made this way gave these results:

 Spec. grav. (density) 886g/l
 Kin. visc. 4.7 mm2/sec
 CFPP -9 deg C
IR spectrum equal to control samples from commercial producers in
 Austria

CFPP = cold filter plugging point
