We have talked about this before, but I don't think anyone has posted any hard data. (Is there any actual data out there?) Please tell us more about your experiment. What process are you using for your biodiesel? What kind of engine is it being used in? How long had the engine been operating before you began the experiment, and what kind of condition was it in when you began checking the quality of your oil? This is a topic of interest to many people on the list. [biofuel] New to the group
Hello, I recently "joined" the group. I have been making biodiesel for about one year, have some formal training in chemistry and some automotive mechanical experience as a "shadetree mechanic." Currently I am running a little experiment using bypass filtration and synthetic oil (using professional oil analysis) in my biodiesel powered vehicles. I am not changing the crankcase oil until it does not meet specs. This is important because synthetic oil improves fuel economy and takes a lot of used motor oil out of the waste stream. Potentially synthetic oil could last over 100,000 miles but I am unaware of any studies on vehicles running neat biodiesel. This topic may have been covered previously so I will end..here. Looking forward to being involved with the group. Lurch Yahoo! Groups Sponsor ~--> Yahoo! (If it were, then you and I and all other human beings would be classified as gross polluters and be sent directly to the scrapyard, since we exhale CO2.) About five years ago I did read that emissions for Honda cars were approaching emissions levels of fossil fueled power plants and so perhaps by now your claim may be at least close to correct, at least for certain current cars. I do think that the characterization of electric vehicles as "zero emission vehicles" is, at best, highly misleading. I have owned an electric vehicle for eight years but am about to sell it since my SVO powered VW Jetta TDI is so far superior in performance and range, not to mention that it runs on renewable fuel. Now, if anyone would like to join in on the design of a diesel hybrid electric vehicle that would run on SVO or Biodiesel, possibly for use in third world countries, then I am all ears. (I have already designed and built the diesel engine powered SVO/Biodiesel generator for such a vehicle.) John, You do not seems to know very much about hydrogen, do you? http://energysavingnow.com/hydrogen/ Electric cars, with the hybrid cars as a variant of them, are much more feasible. Re: [biofuel] New to the group
Think about it. Electric cars have the same problem as hydrogen cars. There is no free supply of electricity. The only way to produce relatively polution free vehicles would be to have all electrical power produced by nuclear energy. Right now any increase in electrical energy consumption is generally produced by coal. Net CO2 output from coal after inefficiency of batteries and the like are taken into account is far higher than gas vehicles. As my air modeling friend told me. Electric vehicles are just a moving the smoke plume issue. - bfn - JAW -- Original Message -- From: Martin Klingensmith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Reply-To: biofuel@yahoogroups.com Date: Fri, 18 Jun 2004 17:33:14 -0400 >John Woolsey wrote: > >>Things that have been irritating me: >>Electric cars produce more polution and CO2 than gas cars. Re: [biofuel] New to the group
I find this things very hard to believe. My father was telling me about how in the 70s someone put together a book that said we where going to run out of nickel copper and various other metals. The book quoted mostly dates in the 80s. It is now 2004 and we are recycling some stuff, but we are not going to run out anytime soon. David Szuki in Canada has been predicting complete environmental collapse since the 80s. Like some cult he keeps moving the date out when it becomes obvious that it isn't going to happen. Certainly some of these things are risks, but there is not solid evidence that any of them are going to happen. In fact as we speak algae has started growing better in the oceans and is partially reversing the greenhouse affect. Stop preaching doom and gloom. There is no proof it is going to happen. Just as there is little proof it isn't. So far the evidence seems to support life is a lot less fragile than we thought. It is certainly more stable than David Szuki was intimating. Now back to reality. We need to find recyclable ways to replace parts of our society that are throw away. Possibly the way we get there is by waiting until the cost of the recyclable product drops below the cost of the throw away product but I would like to see it happen sooner primarily but considering throw away a sin tax. And taxing it appropriately. Things that have been irritating me: Electric cars produce more polution and CO2 than gas cars. Remember marginal electricity is produced by Coal in NA. The Green party in Can has their heart in the right place but can't seem to do basic scientific research so they promote electric cars. The Green party in Can claims they believe in science and financial responsibility and they push unscientifically proven remedies on people. Why the vast majority of people who believe in the environment are so left wing no one is willing to take them seriously. For that matter most right wing governments don't seem to get the environment. Why most left wing governments don't understand you need a strong business economy to pay for all of the stuff to help out the little guy and the environment. Why most right wing governments don't understand the only thing public corporations want is money. They don't EVER care about anything else. Ok I admit I am in a bad mood and am done now. - bfn - JAW Ken Provost wrote: > on 6/15/04 7:48 AM, Dan Fitzpatrick at [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: > > > >>I'm very interested to learn how far we could go towards >>completely replacing fossil-fuels without sacrificing lifestyle. > > > > Probly not very far. [biofuel] New to the group
Howdy folks, I'm new to the group and relatively new to the concept of biofuels. From what I've read so far it looks like a very exciting field with a lot of potential to do a lot of good things in terms of providing a renewable and environmentally friendly alternative to fossil fuels. I hope that as I learn more and more that promise and hope continues to grow. Does anybody know of any good resources to learn about production capacities and the like for biodiesel base oils? I'm very interested to learn how far we could go towards completely replacing fossil-fuels without sacrificing lifestyle. Also, if anyone can point me to some good numbers for fuel yields from base oils and other such data, I would be very grateful. Thanks!
