Re: [svg-developers] Re: Announcement: Adobe to Discontinue Adobe SVG Viewer
Jon, That was beautifully written. Thank you for your work and advocacy in the SVG community. What's the next step for our community to take, regarding items 3, 4, and 5? Margie On 9/6/06, jon_ferraiolo [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hi Pat, Now that I am a member of the community and no longer an employee of Adobe, here is my reaction: (1) First off, I believe that Adobe deserves a great amount of appreciation for their contributions to SVG and the open standards world for their activities in previous years. Adobe provided a high-quality free implementation of an SVG viewer at large expense. (Pat, you know this perhaps better than anyone.) Adobe also has provided (and presumably will continue to provide) excellent support for SVG in some of its products, particularly Illustrator. Adobe has also made large contributions within the standards community on SVG. (2) It is understandable that at some point Adobe would announce the end-of-life for Adobe SVG Viewer. Since the Macromedia acquisition (at least, perhaps even earlier), it is clear that Adobe doesn't consider the SVG viewer to be strategic. Also, browsers are adding SVG support natively. (3) HOWEVER, I believe that some of the details regarding this end-of-life announcement are unacceptable to the community and not in Adobe's own best interests. To me, it is OK to stop support (presumably developer support and security fixes) on Adobe SVG Viewer in the relative near-term, but instead of giving four months of advanced notice (i.e., 1/1/07), it should be something measured in years, something in the range of 2-4 years. (Note: 5 years is the usual amount for developer-oriented software.) (4) It reflects badly on Adobe that it did not donate the ASV source code (at least the higher-level logic that sits above the graphics rendering engine) to open soure. If Adobe isn't going to use ASV, then it should give it to the community so they can use it. Given how Adobe promoted industry adoption of ASV in the early days and thereby convinced many developers to build mission-critical applications using SVG, it is the least that Adobe could do. (5) But the worst part of this announcement is the removal of ASV downloads as of 1/1/08, with no option for others to host a different ASV download site. As others have pointed out, this will be devastating to those poor souls who made a commitment to ASV in the past and need their deployed SVG applications to continue working in IE, which today has something like 80% market share and is unlikely to support SVG natively before a couple of years go by. This particular decision reflects badly on Adobe as a business partner with developers. If nothing else, I appeal to Adobe to rethink this part of their decision. How much does it cost a company to maintain a single web page that is already working? If ASV quits working in some situations, such as ASV not running under Vista, then just add text to the download page alerting people that ASV has been EOL'd and is known not to work with Vista. (But the better approach would be to open source ASV so that the community can fix any such bugs.) Jon Ferraiolo IBM Adobe has decided to discontinue support for Adobe SVG Viewer. There are a number of other third-party SVG viewer implementations in the marketplace, including native support for SVG in many Web browsers. The SVG language and its adoption in the marketplace have both matured to the point where it is no longer necessary for Adobe to provide an SVG viewer. SVG is an established vector image format. Adobe currently supports SVG in several of its authoring and server products, including Illustrator, InDesign, GoLive, Version Cue, Graphics Server, FrameMaker, and FrameMaker Server. Adobe customer support for Adobe SVG Viewer will be discontinued on January 1, 2007. For more information on this decision and answers to questions about the discontinuation of Adobe SVG Viewer, please see http://www.adobe.com/svg Messages in this topic http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers/message/56704;_ylc=X3oDMTM2cGwwcGptBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzEyOTg0MjEEZ3Jwc3BJZAMxNjAxMDMwMzg5BG1zZ0lkAzU2NzIzBHNlYwNmdHIEc2xrA3Z0cGMEc3RpbWUDMTE1NzU4OTQ0MgR0cGNJZAM1NjcwNA--( 12) Reply (via web post) http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers/post;_ylc=X3oDMTJxMXB1ZjZzBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzEyOTg0MjEEZ3Jwc3BJZAMxNjAxMDMwMzg5BG1zZ0lkAzU2NzIzBHNlYwNmdHIEc2xrA3JwbHkEc3RpbWUDMTE1NzU4OTQ0Mg--?act=replymessageNum=56723| Start a new topic http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers/post;_ylc=X3oDMTJlaGJqa3IwBF9TAzk3MzU5NzE0BGdycElkAzEyOTg0MjEEZ3Jwc3BJZAMxNjAxMDMwMzg5BHNlYwNmdHIEc2xrA250cGMEc3RpbWUDMTE1NzU4OTQ0Mg-- [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! It is available here: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/ I just used the zip file and extracted it to a separate location so I didn't have to reinstall each time. After starting it up, type about:config in the address bar, scroll down to find svg-enabled and change it to true. The Firefox developers are doing a great job! I am impressed with how well this demo worked. http://www.wpsenergy.com/JayNick/OfficeBuilding/OfficeBuilding.svg Here are some things I found converting this svg from ASV to Firefox. 1. default namespace is required (ASV did not require it): xmlns=http://www.w3.org/2000/svg; 2. CSS definition for font-size must include units (ASV must default to px): font-size:10px; 3. xlink:href is somewhat broken. It only works by opening a new window. If popup blocker is enabled (default), links are blocked. (ref bug report: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=267657 ) 4. script should not include type attribute as there is no value compatible with both ASV and Firefox. (ref http://www.mozilla.org/projects/svg/faq.html#script http://www.mozilla.org/projects/svg/faq.html#script ) 5. There are Doctype issues as well. Firefox expects: !DOCTYPE svg PUBLIC -//W3C//DTD SVG 1.1//EN http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/1.1/DTD/svg11.dtd; ASV gives an unrecognized warning. Taking it completely out seems to work for both. 6. Animation is not yet implemented in Firefox/Mozilla: http://www.mozilla.org/projects/svg/status.html I used getURL() for ASV and xmlHttpRequest() for Firefox to dynamically update the SVG so it works in both IE (with ASV) and Firefox. Thanks to all the developers contributing to Firefox/Mozilla SVG project. Keep up the good work! If I weren't going on vacation, with many things to get done before then, I'd offer to create it for you. Basically, you can create maps from any GIS data. Whether it's free depends on a lot of things, but if you tell me what you're looking for, and point me to a free data source (in shp or mapinfo format) I could try to get it done, (but no promises. ) Our community should try to create a really rich area of maps in openclipart.org http://www.openclipart.org/cgi-bin/navigate/geography There's not really a lot there, right now. Let's all add to that site! Having a rich map area (in addition to other content) there could do a lot to promote SVG, I think. [svg-developers] US County Map, working toward thematic mapping...
Hi all, I've created a national county, MSA, and state map of the United States. It's at: http://www.margieroswell.com/svg/nation.htm It has some drawbacks: - It's large and therefore sluggish. (Zipped svgz file is 2 mb. The original FCC MapInfo file was not very generalized.) - Also, this doesn't do much. In fact, it does little but default viewer behavior That's where you come in! (well, if you want to.) (Actually, apart from default behavior, there is some nice javascript for turning on and off layers that seems to work well. Another feature is that the IDs match the state and county FIPS codes) What else can we do with this (if anything)? First of all, looks like I need to find tools to generalize boundaries (or maybe it's easier just to purchase pre-generalized county maps?) I want to eventually be able to do choropleth mapping, and variable sized pie charts. Here are some good county-level data sources, in case you want to work at that level: http://www.census.gov/popest/datasets.html http://www.ssi.nrcs.usda.gov/CustomData/DataCounty.html http://fisher.lib.virginia.edu/collections/stats/crime/ (That's Uniform Crime Reports County Data) I do promise to release a state file (subset of this--just the state layer) so that screen redraw isn't a problem, over the weekend. When that's up (it's not yet) it'lll be at: http://www.margieroswell.com/svg/states.htm The Holy Grail (great sample SVG map applications): http://www.carto.net/neumann/cartography/vienna/ http://www.carto.net/papers/svg/us_population/index.html http://www.statistics.gov.uk/about/methodology_by_theme/area_classification/la/svg/index.html http://www.InstantAtlas.com/ I'm aiming to climb the learning curve, and welcome others joining in the merriment, at whatever level. If anybody comes up with something interesting from this, carto.net has mentioned an interest in hosting innovative solutions and basic tutorials...Carto.net is truly an awesome resource. On the homepage front, I should add that my margieroswell.com site is, alas, hopelessly out of date (well... a year old) ..Will maintain as time permits. Have to dig up some old MySQL password, I think. I welcome participation by others in learning and sharing information on building GIS-style SVG apps. Drop me a line if this sort of mapping interests you... Let's see if we can figure it out together, and maybe give back to carto.net, too, as we develop our skills. Re: [svg-developers] Re: Learning curve... and development environment
What features and capabilities would you like or expect to find in such application? Well, one of the main features would be to be able to open my files. I mean, I know that sounds basic, but for instance, amaya, and others don't open files generated by Bill Thoen's wonderful little MapInfo export utility (maybe the SVG programs have trouble with the coordinate system, I don't know.). Also, a number of apps won't open my Instant Atlas (instantatlas.com) files. I wrote to RapidSVG, for instance, and they bascially said that you can open RapidSVG-created files, but not necessarily other SVG files So, honestly, that's my first battle: getting the file open! Then, being able to interact with the graphic and the DOM together... I downloaded Sketsa, a basic viewer, but it's slow (maybe a memory problem on my home computer?), and also doesn't have any sophisticated interaction tools built in. Batik's Squiggle also seems to be in essence just a viewer. I tried looking at eclipse, which someone mentioned in this thread, but couldn't really figure out what to do with it. SVGComposer is so far the best tool I've seen to figure out what's going on in an SVG file. And, thankfully, it actually opens my files. But it doesn't have any tools to teach me how to do more interactive stuff. The holy grail of what I'm after, looks either like instant atlas or like http://www.carto.net/papers/svg/us_population/index.html Andreas (thank you, Andreas!) has a nice tutorial on how to do that last one, and Tom (on this list) and I are going to try to figure it out, but so far, we haven't even found a tool that can open my geographic file, click on a state or county, and see the associated elements. (the file is around 5 mb, since it has all the counties...) SVGComposer has the ability to flash when you select an element in the DOM, but the file is so big, I can't seem to even find it. Not sure it actually is selecting in that file. Anyhow, I am completely smitten with SVG (and although at work I'm limited to non-open source programming environments, by fiat, and most of the samples out there use open source stuff), I do intend to figure out how to do wonderful stuff, even if I have to do it in just a straight text editor. So in sum: - opening the file (most necessary) - tools for basic interactive operations. - tools specifically for building GIS applications in SVG - a good book (not written yet) on building GIS applications in SVG. Andreas, would you like to write one? I'd be happy to help! BTW, when I get some time (which isn't now) I'll make my state, county, and MSA SVG file available, and see what tools people can figure out to interact with it. [svg-developers] URL in browser status bar
one of the rare things I DON'T like about SVG is that an object that is anchored (hyperlinked) to a URL only displays the URL in the browser status bar for a split second. Re: [svg-developers] URL in browser status bar
Perhaps I am confused about what you are looking for, but I use links like this is svg sites frequently and the URL shows up in the status bar for as long as hold the cursor over it No, you're not confused. I've narrowed in on the problem. Seems that in Internet Explorer, the first view of the SVG shows up with a proper URL in the status bar. But when I press F5 to do a screen redraw (say, if I modify the document, or if I went to bring it back to its default settings) the behavior totally changes. That's when the URL flashes only for an instant precisely when you cross the element boundary with the mouse, and then changes to Done. Nothing I do brings back the original behavior after that Ah, now, here's another weird thing! I just tried clicking on the URL in the address bar, and it loaded a new instance of the browser (complete with original url-in-the-status-bar behavior.) Each new click loaded a new instance. Now to firefox... well, it seems that every time I install ASV 6 (to view in firefox, it also changes my IE installation to ASV6, which doesn't work with my Instant Atlas SVG files. So, definitely some weird glitches. The Done problem (Done showing up in the status bar, instead of the URL) on the mouseovers every time I press F5...can anyone replicate that? Re: [svg-developers] MID/MIF to SVG conversion
I have a bunch of MID/MIF files and I would like to convert them to SVG format. Can anyone give me a hint of how to do this ? These three MID/MIF to SVG converters require that you have MapInfo to perform the conversion: http://www.svg-builder.com/specifications.html http://www.gisnet.com/notebook/SVG_mapping.htm http://www.dbxgeomatics.com/SVGMapMaker.asp?Language=EN This one is a stand-alone GIS conversion tool (but also costly, I think?) converter http://www.safe.com/news/2002/32/ Definitely an opportunity for someone to write a shareware utility to convert MIF/MID without needing a whole GIS package. It would be appreciated and used by the GIS community. Here's a copy of the MIF/MID specification http://www.ci.detroit.mi.us/plandevl/advplanning/cinfo/adv/tools/PDF/MIDMIFfileformat.pdf Margie Roswell http://SVGMapper.blogspot.com - To unsubscribe send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -or- visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers and click edit my membership Yahoo! - SVGMapMaker requires MapInfo - SVGMapper Released for ArcView GIS - MI2SVG (at http://www.gisnet.com/notebook/SVG_mapping.htm) requires MapInfo. - InstantAtlas.com uses shape or MIF/MID files, but I think you need to pay $1000 for it... - Hmmm...now this one looks promising, but you need perl http://aaronland.info/perl/xml/generator/svg/shapefile/docs.html http://www.webmapper.net/svg/create/ - SVGBuilder is in French, (which I don't read) so I'm not quite sure what it is about...http://www.svg-builder.com/specifications.html - Ooh, this one looks promising, too: http://www.mycgiserver.com/~amri/converter.cocoon.xml - And here's another tool: http://www.safe.com/news/2002/32/ Who else has GIS to SVG conversion tools? Re: [svg-developers] Can this be done?
I missed this one, but it also seems to require ArcView http://www.uismedia.de/mapview/eng/index.html Likewise this: http://www.carto.net/projects/shp2svg/ requires arcview. [svg-developers] Directory Thumbnail Viewer for SVG files?
Is there a tool in windows that will allow rapid viewing of SVG files in folders? The Internal Explorer to Windows automatically lets you view thumbnails of JPGs, GIFs, etc. but not SVG files. I don't think Google's new picasa Views SVG files, either. Any ideas welcome! Re: [svg-developers] SVG showing up as XML text file in browser (viewer IS installed)
I appreciate all the help. Still some glitches, though I've followed the directions below. Weird glitches, and I wonder if anyone has any ideas. Check out EpiQMS, the Pennsylvania Epidemiology Query Management System http://app2.health.state.pa.us/epiqms/Asp/ChooseDataset.asp When I view the maps in IE, no problem. Under Firefox, although I do get the outline of the map, the colors are not filled in, and in particular, the legend, instead of containing data, only says ! for each entry. Likewise, these maps don't show up properly in Firefox, so it's not unique to that EpiQMS application: http://healthcybermap.org/PCT/STDs/ These are both awesome applications. Can anyone figure out how to view them in Firefox? [svg-developers] SVG showing up as XML text file in browser (viewer IS installed)
This one feels dumb, but I haven't been able to solve it yet. I can view, this SVG file (for instance, and many others ) in my browser: http://www.carto.net/papers/svg/samples/mouse_over_effects.svg But when I save it as a local file (or create my own SVG file) I just get the display of the xml with the plus and minus signs in my IE browser. Same thing is true if I use the built-in browsers on various of my web developer tools (Dreamweaver, and Namo): Just text, no graphics. I'm also the one who posted the request on how to embed SVG into a blogspot blog. For whatever reason, I can see the message at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers/message/47856 But it never seemed to arrive into my gmail account.) Anyhow, mysteries of the universe. I'd really love to get started with SVG, but at least at home, I can't create files and view them (yet.) No problem on the browser at work. At first I thought the problem had something to do with switching from textpad to the browser, but having downloaded an SVG that I can view over the web, but not if it's local, I'm a bit stuck. Sincerely, Margie http://SVGMapper.blogspot.com/ P.S. In the file associations, it looks like I have the option to call an SVG an SVG document or an HTML Document. Is one preferred over the other? - To unsubscribe send a message to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -or- visit http://groups.yahoo.com/group/svg-developers and click edit my membership Yahoo! [svg-developers] SVG embedded in a blogspot blog?
Hi, I'm brand new to SVG, but smitten. I figured I'd start a blog, http://SVGMapper.blogspot.com/ to document development as I start from ground zero. (maybe a better word for that!) Already, I see I've met a challenge...I want to be able to provide samples via the blog. I don't think I can upload files. I'm looking for an inline text solution. Note, that I've found, and put a link to http://www.jenitennison.com/xslt/utilities/svg-utils.html, but even that solution requires linking to an external file. Has anyone (or can anyone) figure out how to include SVG in a blogspot blog?
