t-and-f: PVWAtG *** NEWS FLASH *** Dragila WR(?) @ Pocatello

2001-02-10 Thread Roger Ruth

Posted from Doug Lang on the VaultCanada mailing list. Does anyone have an
answer to his question about what was non-conforming about the Pocatello
runway when she vaulted 4.57m (15') and 4.61m there last year, and whether
it still is? In a note, Mark Butler described the runway as "irregular."

"DRAGILA BREAKS WORLD RECORD (AGAIN)
AS BENGALS SPLIT WITH BOBCATS IN TRACK FIELD DUAL

Pocatello, Ida. -- It was billed as a dual meet between the Idaho State
Bengals and the Montana State Bobcats, but it was an unattached competitor
who stole the show Friday night at Holt Arena. Stacy Dragila marked the
one-week anniversary of her last World Record (at the Millrose Games in New
York) by breaking the record again, soaring 15-3.25" (4.65m). In the
competition, ISU and MSU split, with the Bengal men winning 79-71 and the
Bobcat women winning 79-72."

So Stacy has done it again. However there has been a recent posted thread
(that I had planned on posting in this weekend's issue) on how non eof
Stacy's Pocatello records have ever been ratified (ergo the question mark
after WR in the title). We'll have to see what happens in that department

Congrats once again Stacy!

In reference to the runway issue, there are specific guidlines set by
the IAAF on what constitutes a legal runway. The Commish or GH can fill
us in on the details. At Millrose, one of the first things they did was
certify the runway met spec after Stacy's vault. I have no idea what
the Pocatella runaway has that would cause it not to certify.

Yes we can, but so can you. The IAAF and USATF have their current rule
books on their respective websites and you and anyone else who wants to
know what constitutes a legal runway can easily look it up.

2001-02-10 Thread Robert Hersh

Since I've now said this in response to several private messages, I might
as well say it publicly. I am not aware of any irregularity in the pole
vault runway in Pocatello. Of course, never having seen it, I can't swear
that there isn't a problem, but if there is, it's news to me--I haven't
heard this before. I would normally assume that, at a major facility,
everything would be in order. I'm inclined to believe that is true in
Pocatello and no vague references to unspecified irregularities are going
to change that belief. If someone KNOWS of some specific element of
non-compliance with the rules, please come forward. Until then, as far as
I'm concerned, I'll presume that the runway is ok. (Of course, for record
recognition purposes, there would have to be a proper certification of that
fact.)
