What is your suggested ref for links that are an entrance, not an exit? Well... no reference ? If there is no reference for an entrance, it may be artificial to put a reference. Someone on the French mailing list (talk-fr) explained that he puts the reference of the road where you go (every link is shown as an entrance in this case). And can you give an example of what you mean by an exit ref? Where I come from, some exits have numbers, but the number is associated with the highway ref, so you'd still need that as well. Here is an example in France : http://maps.google.fr/?ie=UTF8ll=48.081778,-1.647391spn=0,359.961848z=15layer=ccbll=48.081749,-1.647577panoid=OUTdtU68JZ69U9zdcNcHgwcbp=12,85.64,,1,-8.41 The road where you are is a trunk, the road where you go is a secondary road. Xav wrote: Well... no reference ? There is a note at the bottom of the wiki page about the German use of ref (don't know if it's been added recently). In the UK it is more likely that if a ref tag is used at all, then it will be the ref of the motorway that is used as motorway restrictions apply on the link (or slip) roads. In the case where two motorways join then there is probably some arbitrary point where the way stops being one motorway and starts being the other - I'd probably not add a ref on the way in this case. The tag highway=motorway_junction has also been used on trunk roads in the UK that have had their junctions numbered (this used to be rare - I'm not sure it is quite so rare any more). One example is where the A12 and M25 meet - the M25 junction is J28 but the A12 junction is J11. The nodes where the slip road leave the main carriageway get the junction ref relevant to that way. I'm not sure whether this is relevant to your question though - perhaps it should just have been highway=junction so it could be used on all ways without people worrying too much about the motorway_ in the name. http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.60859lon=0.26331zoom=16layer s=B000FTF Ed PS: I've just realised that the J11 nodes weren't tagged so have now done so. No it's not. Especially for nodes it is trivial. For ways it requires some more effort. For nodes: download the relevant nodes in the area that you are going to upload in (XAPI might be useful here) and check for each node you want to import if there is a node in the vicinity. Since you have lat-lon of each node that's a basic SQL query. I am assuming you put everything in a database (with osmosis for example). The only thing is that that check is not done online and the exact weeding out of double nodes should be done by hand, according to the list that the query generates. I posted to the forums, but didn't get any response and it was suggested I post here to inform people what's happening. I have written a speedometer app for Android handsets that uses the GPS information to display an analog speed dial. I recently updated the app to upload GPX data to a work server which then batch uploads it to OSM servers. There was almost 1200 GPS traces uploaded based on 50 GPS points or more, I recently decided to limit it to 300+ points and pruned the traces down to about 500, most seem to have about 1000 points, although one has as much as 95,000 points. http://www.openstreetmap.org/user/Bigtincan%20Android%20App%20Account/traces This isn't the first app to do this, I noticed AndNav2 does the same thing although I don't know specific details about what they do filtering wise. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

This is fine for city green spaces, but doesn't work for state/county recreation areas which may be either wilderness or managed trails, motorcycle tracks, boat launches etc. nature_reserve isn't appropriate as they're usually not preserving nature I have been tagging state and county parks which are not open green spaces as parks for the time being, but if anyone has any other suggestions I would love to hear them. Why is landuse=forest not appropriate for parks/forests with the same uses but with a lower administrative classification? landuse=forest is for managed land with trees on it regardless of who manages it. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
Re: [OSM-talk] [Talk-us] Mapping of State/county/national parks
Why is landuse=forest not appropriate for parks/forests with the same uses but with a lower administrative classification? landuse=forest is for managed land with trees on it regardless of who manages it. Because they often aren't forests. (I said similar use) Sometimes they're scrubland, beach, plains, dunes, rocky craginess, volcanos, river deltas... The list goes on and on. I take landuse=forest to mean a managed forest meaning they're harvesting trees, moss or whatever, such as many state natural resource department's forest land or the National Forest lands (excluding wilderness areas) in the United states. And often parks at lower administrative classifications are set aside for recreation, not natural preservation or for logging, farming, grazing or harvesting any natural resources. As the case is in coastal states, there are coastal state parks consisting solely of beaches, and in the southwest of the United States there are state parks consisting solely of desert. Additionally landuse=forest doesn't accurately portray all of the Bureau of Land Managements lands--which account for 1/8th of the area of the US, of which landuse=forest is only appropriate for ~20%. It also would be entirely inappropriate for the United States National Grasslands, which are like the National Forests in almost every aspect, except that they are grasslands (and tagging them as such doesn't distinguish them from surrounding non-public use/recreation grasslands). I'm all for using existing tagging schemes, but the vast majority of land in the United States and Canada classified as parks aren't of the form leisure=park. Personally, I would classify what is leisure=park (manicured greenery with duckponds and funnel cake vendors) as urban parks. -Tyler ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [OSM-talk] [Talk-us] Mapping of State/county/national parks
Just tagging the underlying landtypes and uses is fine (aside from most of them not being natural) but doesn't at all account for the difference between scrubland/seashore/whatever where you will be shot to death if you trespass (military installations) and that which you're free to roam around on and is designated a park. Then use the boundary key. If you way up each of the unique sections, then create a multipolygon relation out of all of the boundary ways and additional multipolygons for each of the various landuses or ground covers. Boundaries are a good solution, and are easy for the national lands set aside for recreation boundary=national_park covers them nicely (and renderers could easily decide to render them as filled green areas--standard practice). Through a quick discussion on #osm I'm going with boundary=national_park (for all parks that aren't urban parks), admin_level=whatever the operator level is, operator=whoever the operator is and ownership=whoever the owner is parsing that out to re-tag it consistently later should be relatively trivial. Thanks for the discussion Adam, -Tyler ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
Re: [OSM-talk] [Talk-us] Mapping of State/county/national parks
Does boundary=national_park have nothing to do with US National Parks? I.e. it's just a park at the national level? It would make more sense to me to just be a park at the national level, that makes it useful to all of the various national level parks which aren't National Park Service parks in the US, in addition to national parks in Canada, Mexico, China, Russia, Lesotho, etc. boundary=national_park ownership=national operator=United States National Park Service or operator=United States National Forest Service operator=United States Bureau of Land Management etc. -Tyler ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk
Re: [OSM-talk] [Talk-us] Mapping of State/county/national parks
boundary=national_park ownership=national operator=United States National Park Service or operator=United States National Forest Service operator=United States Bureau of Land Management etc. makes sense to use just one boundary tag. easier to implement in the renderer and good enough for nearly all maps. also most users don't care if it's a national, state, county park special applications/users can use the operator tag. -Tyler ___ Talk-us mailing list talk...@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk-us ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Although if reset tracks that go over 65,000 seconds back to zero you could get away with only 13 bytes. No idea if this would compress well or not. However 9000 points uncompressed with 13 bytes per point would give you about 115kBytes, the 9000 point gpx file I compressed came out at 35kBytes. I'd say that unless you're *really* concerned about space, I'd just stick with gzip/bzip2-ing the GPX files. If you are that concerned about space, you'd definitely want to use some form of delta encoding, and probably variable-length encoding too. Why spend a whole four bytes storing the latitude? Presumably it's going to be fairly close to the previous point in the track, not 1km away. Same for time, it'll definitely be after the previous timestamp and not by much. If you want to get really fancy, you can start compressing straight- ish sections with something similar to video I an B/P frame, storing it as a fraction of the way between the two key points, and an offset from the line joining them. If it's just to stop people casually seeing where you live, then cutting out a polygon will probably be enough. For the second case, not uploading GPS tracks may not be enough. I would guess that there are plenty of clues as to where you live just in your edit locations and patterns - like someone's early edits are probably going to be streets near where they live. Flo Moin! ...ganz schön interesssant was da alles dahinter steckt!
