Hi Aevar, Most coffeshops do offer more than just beverages. In general you are welcome to order: Uitsmijter : 2 bread , ham and 2-3 eggs Tostie: 2 bread ham and cheese , grilled together Broodje : white or brown bread with any sliced meat or cheese (10's of choices) Broodje gezond: Folded bread or baguette type of bread with ham chees salad tomatoe cucumber etc. Broodje bal: Soft white bread, with a meatball in between (try this one !) Broodje haring : Soft white bread with raw salty herring and onions I do not think it makes sense of tagging the kind of food offered. Hi, you could try using gosm (http://gosm.sf.net) you can mark an area and use the download-button in the 'Selection'-panel on the right. There you can select which zoom levels to download from this selection. When you configure nothing special, the tiles will be downloaded to /tmp/osm_mapnik or something and thereby deleted on reboot, but you can set another path as a cache dir in 'Options-Preferences'. This will allow you to make downloaded tiles permanantly available to the software. Is it possible for Marble to cache the data for offline viewing? For some species, I guess, there will be no English name, but there may be a local name. And Latin name will always be defined. As I'm presently working on a semantic application which includes bird catalogs, I can say that things aren't so easy (but aren't much harder). While the idea of using the latin name (a.k.a. binomial name) is a good idea (much better than localized names, that often are ambiguous), there isn't a universal catalog of names (my experience is limited to birds, but I expect my point is valid for other animals too). Instead there is a number of different taxonomies around, even though some are more commonly used than others (e.g. Clements for birds); probably the most complex point is that names don't stay the same in time, as taxonomies are constantly evolved and maintained; sometimes a single species name changes, sometimes the genus name changes, sometimes two different species are grouped into a single one, sometimes what is considered a single species with variants is split in multiple species. Thus, a good way to represent a species name would be a triple: taxonomy name, taxonomy year, binomial name. Eg. Clements, 2008, Larus canus would represent the Mew gull (not sure it's called Common gull throughout the whole world, BTW). This should be enough, and would make possible to specialized applications (such as mine) to find the semantic equivalence with other taxonomies, localized names and so on. While this might sound picky, in the Semantic Web perspective it is important to be picky. -- Fabrizio Giudici - Java Architect, Project Manager Tidalwave s.a.s. - We make Java work. Re: [OSM-talk] A possible way to promote OSM
For the UK its GCSE and A-Level Geography students are the ones to look at I guess. Though I know we might not be able to use information from 11yr old kids it still does not mean we can not help provide education information to them. I know its not what OSM is about but educating the youth in the wonder of maps should be a nice starting ground. Because OSM are free it means teachers can freely print copies and let the student learn about orienteering even if its only on school grounds. You never know the teacher may put the information for the school into OSM so that they could use it themselves. On the wiki it would be useful to put all the information under Teaching Resources and go from there. *Sorry I keep doing this (forgetting to cc the list)* What John was commentating on. Make a teaching pack that would give them ideas on how they can teach students about map making. One idea is that they can map the school. Using walking maps they can upload the hand drawn map and trace that. If suitable permission could be found they could map their neighbourhood or street. When I was at school I loved maps as we have a collection of os maps at home. After taking geography as a gcse subject I was disappointed we never did much with maps. None of the students could read an os map. There are different target groups, primary school, secondary, college/uni so we need targeted plans for each. But for now OSM is still very new and so mapping stuff with the general name should be fine for now. I only said to use English because the tags are in most cases English. Rather tagging an enclosure 'Lesser Spotted Mapper' it should be labelled as 'Mappers' because the Zoo may change the breed or might put several breeds in the same enclosure. Longleat Zoo has areas that you can drive though that contain several different animals. Zebra, Giraffe etc. How would you label that? A dog is named 'Spike' although it is of species 'Canis lupus'. name=Spike species=Canis lupus That idea works but does not work so well for a Zoo that may have 10+ animals in it all called different names. For the average person who is going to use the map, I think that using the name tag and using a general understandable term would do. The professor is aware of open-source GIS software but has not been familiar with OSM beyond a general awareness of it. One student was involved a few years ago in creating something like the GNIS file that someone has uploaded, and he may do some work to correct the location errors in it in the local area. I also encouraged those with access to any of the many gated communities in this area to map those, because the Yahoo imagery indicates a lot of construction but no final streets and structures. I am interested to see what comes of all of this. The students seemed to be intrigued that students have been big contributors to the OSM endeavor. By the way, whom in the OSM network should I contact about getting help with the uploads this fall? A couple of months ago there was some discussion here about developing some sort of support team for uploading files, and I don't remember seeing what came of that. Ed Hillsman Edward L. For various reasons, for example the need to put different max_speed tags on different parts of a way, the need to split ways so individual parts can become part of a relation, etc, even simple linear ways are becoming very fragmented. It looks too complicated to me. Curved bridges will require more than one segment to mark the bridge way. Re: Collected Ways - For a simple way bridge case, I leave the bridge named either the same as the way or for the case of a named bridge, have the way as name_1. The name collector *might* be able to follow the way by inspecting name tags.I don't know how well that concept applies to a bridge carrying multiple ways. Re: [OSM-talk] Collected Way support
I agree that it's a real issue. It's a pain assigning all the short ways to a relation (which is what I've been doing this afternoon), or adding information along a route (ie the number of tracks on a railway). However, when I read the proposal, I could see that trying to use relations would generate a fair few problems - which haven't been addressed. But I realised that the problem could be much reduced if temporary alterations to the tags could be done, which they can for individual nodes (eg barrier=gate). And if they can be done for nodes, they can be done for single segments, if the data model is right. It doesn't completely solve the problem, but it could reduce the problem significantly (at least on main roads like the one near me that used to be called the seven bridges road...) It's very straightforward. Just needs a program to take the one file format and turn it into a different file format. Just create a bunch of new nodes, connect them together with a way, then add the appropriate metadata for your renderer. Number the nodes and ways with negative numbers. Or come to my talk at SOTM (if you're here) on Sunday morning. Re: [talk-au] A possible way to promote OSM
I'm starting as a maths teacher next year and will certainly be mentioning it to the geography teachers in passing ;). The hard bit will be relating it to the syllabus so it's not a waste of time. Obviously it would be an excellent exercise for geography students to do, but unless the syllabus allows for first hand cartography a teacher would really need to twist some arms to justify using class time for it. If anybody's got ideas on how to incorporate it into a maths lesson I'm all ears too.
Unser Chief-Information-Officer :-) Es ist also geschehen.
