[OSM-talk] Society of Cartographers

2009-05-07 Thread Steve Chilton
If your appetite for cartography has been whetted by your involvement with OSM
you might like to find out what else is happening in the mapping world.
Three possible things you could do:
1 - have a read of the latest Society of Cartographers Newsletter. It contains
contributions from two prominent OSMers. It can be downloaded from:
http://www.soc.org.uk/newslett.htm#latestNewsletter
2 - consider presenting your latest map-reated idea or project at the Society
of Cartographers summer school. Call for papers and details of the event are at:
http://www.soc.org.uk/southampton09/
3 - consider attending the summer school as a delegate. There will be much of
potential interest to OSMers. Chris Osborne, Keir Clarke and Ed Mac Gillavray
are already confirmed speakers, as is an OpenLayers workshop. Details at link
above, which will be constantly updated as details are firmed up.

[OSM-talk] Society of Cartographers

2008-03-17 Thread Steve Chilton
Volume 41 of the Society of Cartographers Bulletin arrived by post on
Friday, and mighty fine it looks too, with it's enhanced colour section.
OSM is particularly well represented in this issue too.

Main articles include:
Geodata collection in the 21stC Nick Black and Steve
Coast
Designing maps for the colour-vision impaired Bernhard Jenny and
Nathaniel Vaughn Kelso
Open source renders the world Artem Pavlenko
Musical maps: a musical approach to cartography Brian Rogers
Design matters - time matters Pam Baldaro
Mapping the sky Daniel Thomas
Cartography and Google EarthSteve Chilton

There are also 8 pages of cartography tips, plus map and book reviews,
and notes on meetings, exhibitions and conferences.
If you are not a member of the Society of Cartographers you can get all
this (and more benefits) by joining for a ridiculously low annual fee:
http://www.soc.org.uk/member.htm

If you like the sound of all this you should also consider attending a
Society of Cartographers Summer School (or the upcoming Illustrator
workshop http://www.soc.org.uk/workshop.htm).

Summer school details at:
http://www.soc.org.uk/summersc.htm
Why not consider giving a paper at the summer school (there is already
one major OSM initiative being highlighted with a presentation in the
programme).

If you want any further details don't hesitate to contact me.

Cheers
