Hello Maxim,

but it is essential to use the SmimeCapabilities attribute because otherwise
Outlook will use only 40-bit encryption and this cannot be changed within
Outlook. This way it is impossible to distribute s/mime certificates to Outlook
recipients. I have seen that you changed the bug status in Mantis bug tracker
to resolved. Does that mean that you have included the SmimeCapabilities
attribute?

yes, try this one

What's new in 5.3.2.0 since 5.3.1.0:
[*] Fixes in the Html Viewer form (description of the settings were not visible)
[-] AV when closing Select folders dialog for virtual folder (if there isn't
selection in folder tree)
[-] When Microsoft CryptoAPI implementation was used for TLS, and a certificate
did contain multiple hosts, The Bat! took only one host.
[*] The Bat! now adds SmimeCapailities attribute to signed messages

s/mime handling

2012-09-03 Thread atomheart

There is a big security bug in TB related to handling of s/mime certificates.
TB deletes or damages S/MIME capabilities data of the certificate, especially
data of the recipient's S/MIME capabilities. Consequence: if you import a
certificate sent by TB with MS Outlook, Outlook (and most probably other mail
clients) does not know which encryption algorithm to use and will use the
lowest possible (RC2 40 bits). A 40 bit encryption is far from secure. It is
currently impossible to distribute certificates using TB to Outlook recipients
because TB damages the certificates. Can anyone confirm this?

It's just a guess, but your S/MIME certificate says that it's 2048 bits.
I've had some bad experiences when I got my first 2048 bits certificate
and quickly stepped back to 1024 because too many clients can't handle
them and Outlook Express users even reported not being able to reply to
 me anymore.
You also might want to try what happens when you switch from S/MIME
internal implementation to MS Crypto API. Maybe there's a change in
 behavior that could help.

I tried but no certificate was found. Not surprise because I downloaded the
certificates via Firefox, they never were installed in Windows.

I might try this during the weekend. But the internal impementation should
work - which also makes more sense that the MS Crypto API when using TheBat
from a different computer from time to time.

Yes, everything looks fine INSIDE TheBat and when sending mails from one
TheBat to another TheBat.

The fun starts when you try to verify the signatures with another mailer
than TheBat, e.g. Squirrelmail, Thunderbird or something else.

There the signature is broken and invalid.

This was not the case with older TheBat versions so something was changed
and screwed up the signature thing.

Well, could be that some clients don't handle 2048 bit certificates.

But when I tested the scenario with a friend of mine he sent me a testmail
with TheBat 4.1.11 and his fancy brand new StartSSL 2048 bit certificate.
The certificate was valid in my TheBat 4.2.16, Squirrelmail, a linux mail
client and also in Thunderbird. After he upgraded his TheBat installation
to 4.2.16 as well, mails signed with the same certificate (nothing was
changed in the configuration, just upgraded to the then most recent
version) were only valid in TheBat, not in any other mail client software.

I'm talking about the usual way many bugs are treated comparing to adding
new features.

We had this discussion many times here in the beta list.

Usually I would not be concerned that a bug is not fixed after some days.
But with these discussions in the past and that just nobody replied or

It is signed, but my TB! as well as all those other clients don't have
the root and intermediate certificates that were used to sign your
personal certificate.

As you probably have your TB! on the machine where you requested and
installed your certificate, the import process will likely have added
those to your configuration. But that does this for TB! and possibly the
browser that was used to fetch the certificate only.

You will need to at least have the root and intermediate certificates
installed into the other programs before they will recognize your
certificate as valid.

Also, this may pose a problem with recipients such as us. In order to to
be able to verify your certificate, everyone that receives mail from you
needs to install two CA certificates, including one root-certificate an
therefore everyone also needs to decide whether they trust the
organization that you decided to get your certificate from.

Hello Maurice,

I know that the certificate only appears valid when the root and

The problem here is that it seems that there is some kind of message format
error. If the message format was ok, the signature would show as not valid.
But the mail client would be able to read the signature.

In my case the mail is somehow broken, at least for Squirrelmail and this

Confirmed. I looked, and there even *is* an option to cache
passphrases. I absolutely forgot about it, because TB! *always* asks
for passphrases. I found my option set to the highest possible value,
but you are right: it isn't cached.

BTW, checking your GPG-signed HTML mail returned this:

| gpg: Good signature from Henk M. de Bruijn

Re: some S/MIME bugs

2005-07-25 Thread Martin Sebald
Hi Maxim!

 Can somebody confirm?
 Can't confirm without samples.

Ok no problem.

After deleting all S/MIME certificates out of a address book entry the
 checkbox Cert is still active
 https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4985

What kind of sample do you need here? A screenshot of the addressbook entry
with the checked Cert? Well, no problem but why? Don't you believe what
I'm writing?

TB crashes when importing already existing S/MIME certificate to address
 book
 https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4986

What kind of samples can I provide here?

S/MIME certificate shown as invalid in address book but shown as valid
 in signed mail
 https://www.ritlabs.com/bt/view.php?id=4987

I can give you some screenshots. But they won't tell you more than I
already have written into the bug report. In the message list the signature
of the mail (so also the certificate in my opinion) is shown as valid and
in the address book the same certificate (I imported it from the signed
message into the address book) is shown as invalid with the notes I wrote
into the bug report.

Martin

Well, Dimitry, now I do not feel so bad, after my rather dumb mistake.

Also, you have to use the internal implementation, *not* the MS Crypto

But there is still some more work to do here... I am not quite happy

On S/MIME -- perhaps old news

2004-10-25 Thread hggdh
Hello folks,

I have been trying to show another user how to generate self-signed
certificates on TB!.

Now, I had never used the TB! S/MIME certificate generator (usually I
run openssl to do something like this). so obviously I hit some
roadblocks, which were bypassed. All in all, quite easy, even
considering that the Help sort of lacks on explanations of what fields
should be populated. You either know what you need, or you are on your
own.

Nevertheless, so far, so good.

I then added the brand new self-signed cert to the root, and TB! was
happy.

But then, when I tried to use this brand new self-signed, I found
that if you *already* have a S/MIME certificate, then... you cannot
select WHICH S/MIME you want to use. TB! will *ONLY* use the first you
added in!

It happens I have a Thawte S/MIME certificate, to the
'[EMAIL PROTECTED]' account. So, although I could add the self-signed
certificate to the same account, there is *NO* way to use it.

None.

TB! will not let you select WHICH of the S/MIME certificates you want
to use.

The only way I could get it to work was by removing the Thawte cert
from the store.

I personally consider this to be a bug -- one should be able to select
which, of the (possibly) many different certificates one wishes to
use. If I need to keep on adding/deleting certificates from the store,
then this is simply not usable.

But... since this may impact others I would like to have your input on
this.

Cheers,

Re: S/MIME check mark still there in AB after deleting certificates

2004-09-13 Thread Martin Sebald
Hi Alexander!

I don't understand. I was talking about one single person in the address
book, let's call the person Alexander Leschinsky. This person/entry has a
S/MIME certificate under Certificates. The check mark for Cert in the
address book overview is active for this entry. Now I delete all
certificates out of this entry, the person Alexander Leschinsky has no
certificates anymore. But the check mark is still set in the overview.
Ups... I think about different matter - totally different. For your case
restart of The Bat! can help - AB's stored in memory and The Bat
overwrite (if needed) files only on exit

Ah you thought about something different. No Problem.

I tried the restart right after deleting the certificate out of the entry.
Did not work, it's still there after days and several restarts and upgrades
of TheBat.

You have turned on Compress data before encryption which is off by default. It
conforms to rfc3274, but is not yet supported by a majority of S/MIME clients. The

Should we give an additional warning message box if the user turns on this option?

I've tried using both the internal implementation and the MS

facilitate success or is encryption broken?

1. Send me an empty email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] with a subject S/MIME Broken?
2. I will reply with a signed message

MS CryptoAPI simply can't handle (and even knows) about possible different
