ADG Listen carefully. I will say this only once.

ADG TB! Usage Rule Number One: NEVER leave mail in the Inbox. The Inbox
ADG is the folder with the most traffic of all, which makes it also the
ADG most vulnerable. Use filters to move ALL incoming mail to different
ADG folders, even if it doesn't seem necessary. Using the Inbox for
ADG storing messages is asking for trouble.

Excellent advice! I want to add that aggressive AV software will
quarantine the whole inbox if a single infected message appears in
it. I will wager that this is the biggest single reason (maybe
only reason) for people finding their vast inboxes suddenly empty!

Bat bugs force me to T-Bird

2004-06-06 Thread SL
Hi TBUDL listers!
I am writing this from my (and Allie Martin's) alternate mailer as
TheBat (on my PC) is flightless at present.

I have submitted a big report to Ritlabs which in short says that I got
database reading error reports ...Attempts to repair the base did not
work or resulted in TB (ver 2.11.02 on Win 98) seizing up.

Then I resorted to various means to get out of TB, incl
ctrl-alt-del...with some restarts of the computer afterwards... Then I
did some uninstalls and reinstalls (ver 2.11.02...then ver 2.11)with
'restores' from backup etc etc

Then everything seemed OKI ran a full Maintenance routine
againsynchronized my IMAP account...wrote and sent off the bug
report. and then it started again'error reading
database'. 'repair routine' worked this time...Then closed down The
Bat...and got the Runtime Error message again on attempted re-start

T-Bird is much less capable of course than The Bat...but it is still
flying!! :-(

MRA Is there a enable multithreading of status and mail reading or
MRA something that I have overlooked or The Bat just a one job at the
MRA time kind of mail reader ? ;)

I've been noting this as well and you're right. Currently TB! works
with a single IMAP connection and sends/receive requests in series. So
if one thing is happening, you have to wait for it to finish before
another thing is done. If a folder is being sync'd and you wish to
read a message body in another folder, you have to wait until the sync
operation is completed before your message body is retrieved.
ThunderBird and other clients will simply spawn another IMAP
connection and the two requests are dealt with in parallel.

To minimize the wait periods, do the following. In the end TB! will
sort of behave like ThunderBird. :)

- bring up the 'Manage IMAP folders panel'. Set all folders sync
setting to 'Don't synchronize'. There may be a couple vital folders
you wish to have autosync'd so you may wish to do so. However, try
this with all folders set to 'don't synchronize.

- open the IMAP account's properties and go to the 'automatically
connect to the server' tab. Enable all those triggers.

- in the the same IMAP account options go to the 'Options' tab and set
  your interval for mail checking.

- disable the compress on exit function in the IMAP fine tune options
for now since this could also bog down your connection. You can make
that one of your the first options you re-enable.

What you've now done in effect is to make TB! fetch headers and
message bodies only when you specifically request. The new message
counts will be checked when TB! checks for mail. However, headers will
not be downloaded. As a result this check process is quick.

When you select a folder, this will trigger a header sync operation.
So if you see new messages have arrive for a folder, select it and
wait a few moments while the new message headers are downloaded. The
folder will change colour to show that it has downloaded new message
headers. Select each new message and the message body will be
retrieved.

How's that?

I agree with this and simply because IMO, an emoticon is being
inappropriately triggered. Emoticons should be triggered by text that
is not normally used as stand alone text. So in the case above, it
would be better if the emoticon were triggered by :grr:.

Emoticons should be triggered only by special character sequences and
not overlap with commonly emotional words or letter combos we normally
use to mimic a sound like Argh!, Aha!, Hahahaha, Gr, B, oh, etc.

MRA And now onto the questions:

MRA BayesIt and Junk mails:
MRA I can see that BayesIt has loaded it's files etc. in the Information
MRA page of the plugin, but it has not filtered any messages yet - all
MRA stats (except the stuff about the base) is all zero's !?
MRA Is that intentional ? ;)

AM Are you using BayesIt with an IMAP account? I don't know if it will
AM work with IMAP accounts.

yes - of course i'm using it with IMAP accounts...nowhere does the bat
docs mention that IMAP message source are limited compared to POP.
(but I had seen it coming...especially since I've now read 5-10
entries on this mailinglist about limitations/bugs about filtering and
IMAPthus I've taken the consequence and started using imapfilter
to do that particular task instead...that will also allow me to
migrate to another mail client without having to reconfigure
filters)..but i still would like if bayesit could be activated ;)

MRA Speed/Multithread:
MRA Can it be true that The Bat is waay slower to fetch a message while at
MRA the same time checking the state of my folders on my IMAP server ?
MRA Neither Thunderbird, Mozilla, Opera M2 nor Outlook Express has so long
MRA a waiting period from clicking on a new mail and when it is shown in
MRA the preview pane or message dialog?!

MRA Is there a enable multithreading of status and mail reading or
MRA something that I have overlooked or The Bat just a one job at the
MRA time kind of mail reader ? ;)

I've configured it as you said (getting only one access violation in
the process ;( ) and it seems somewhat faster, but now there seem
to be a big mismatch between the unread/total statsoh well - i'll
will probably learn to live with them :(

Btw. can anyone point me to an explanation of the different
states/markers of unread total ?

Like what does Unread: 5 * Total: 7 * means ?
And Unread: 55 56 (364) Total: 5.655 5.656 (6.872)

anyhow thanks for the imap optimzations - i'll get back to you if
they start behaving weird ;)

Bayesit configuration - help needed

2004-06-06 Thread Ian Paul
Hello TBUDL,
Since I'm getting inundated with spam I decided to try the recommended
plug-in. I have met a configuration problem. I'm using The Bat! 2.11.2
with BayesIt 0.5.5. I am on dial-up so I do not download larger
messages , preferring to leave on the server for later action using
Mail Despatcher. Hence, I have a filter which , on the next logon,
matches all messages in the Inbox and deletes from server. Now, to the
problem if I configure BayesIt to automatically move spam messages
to the Junk folder, these messages are not in the Inbox at the time of
the next logon, hence do not match, and do not get deleted off the
server! So. I am trying to configure BayesIt to leave the messages
it regards as spam in the inbox but merely mark them read. There is
a check box to do this (on The Bat! preferences anti-spam leaf) but ,
although it is checked it is also greyed out and does not appear to
function (NB I have both the 'delete' and 'move' checkboxes
unchecked). Is this normal and does anyone know what is going on?

Perhaps unrelated, if I go to The Bat! preferences plug-ins leaf,
highlight BayesIt and click configure the Rules button for setting
black/white lists is similarly greyed out. Again, is this normal?

I guess the main problem is the seemingly poor help available for
BayesIt. Is there a help file somewhere I haven't located? I'd like to
know what all the options mean!

Thank you

Maybe I'm getting old, i.e. 'old eyes' but I would love to see an
option for a table view, i.e. an option for a silver or user

IMO.

Anyone else before I pass it on to RitLabs?

Loosing addressbooks - a bug?

My apologies if this second reply to Allie's does not thread properly:
The Bat is still playing up and I am back into ThunderBird:

To recap: Problems with data base reading errors, attempted fixes, then
a series of Run Time error messages from Windows.
I have three accounts in TB: two POP3, one (my main one: FastMail) IMAP.

On my last re-install (ver 2.11.02), restored from a backup, and pointed
TB to a new directory for my email data. Then I ran BackUp and got error
messages suggesting a problem with the database index, and suggesting I
delete the index. I found the index file(s) (*.tbi) - 25 of them,
deleted them (to Recycle Bin) and restarted TB. I got the familar Run
Time error messages. I undeleted the *.tbi files: same RunTime error
messages...

I might come back to re-addressing this problem...but it may have to
wait 2-3 days (work and other commitments!)...so my second fiddle
(T-Bird) is back into first place...

Perhaps I should reconsider using Outlook Express?? ;-)

Hello Max,

Sunday, June 6, 2004, 8:09:21 AM, you wrote:

AM Welcome aboard though I must admit that IMAP still has some problems,
AM one that you've detected below.

yeah - I'm starting to see the tweaks ... anyone know if these are
high-priority for the The Bat team ? ;)
(since I wrote the originally mail I've gotten 8 access violation
 messages - not very asuring ;( )

IMAP is a priority it would seem, but the optimization seems
challenging so the improvements have been somewhat slow in coming. We
have to be patient. They're working on it. :)

The question is whether or not you can make the current incarnation
workable for your needs.

The manage IMAP folders panel has been a source of many AV's. I
prepare for them when I'm going to work with it. :/

AM Are you using BayesIt with an IMAP account? I don't know if it will
AM work with IMAP accounts.

yes - of course i'm using it with IMAP accounts...nowhere does the bat
docs mention that IMAP message source are limited compared to POP.

TB!'s documentation isn't exhaustive and the fact that this has not
been mentioned doesn't mean it's not a problem. There are many POP
features that don't work with IMAP. TB! was originally mainly a POP
client with all features built around POP. Major IMAP reworking was
undertaken and getting all the non-protocol specific features to work
with IMAP has been a challenge. Quite a bit has happened since I first
started using IMAP.

(but I had seen it coming...especially since I've now read 5-10
entries on this mailinglist about limitations/bugs about filtering
 and IMAP

Filtering is one of the big ones..

Autofiltering has *just now* been put into a workable state though
there are still problems with it.

thus I've taken the consequence and started using imapfilter to do
 that particular task instead...

Wise choice. :)

that will also allow me to migrate to another mail client without
 having to reconfigure filters)..

Exactly!!

but i still would like if bayesit could be activated ;)

I understand. However, I think Bayesit needs good filtering to work,
doesn't it?

I've configured it as you said (getting only one access violation in
 the process ;( )

Lucky you. ;)

and it seems somewhat faster, but now there seem to be a big
mismatch between the unread/total statsoh well - i'll will
probably learn to live with them :(

 Like what does Unread: 5 * Total: 7 * means ?

This means that there are 5 unread messages in that IMAP folder and
none of them are cached locally. The same goes for the Total.

 And Unread: 55 56 (364) Total: 5.655 5.656 (6.872)

Unread - 55 sync'd to local cache but 56 are on the server. If the
numbers are equal then you'll only see one.

(364) usually represents the total count including subfolders.

It's because you're syncing only on demand that you're now seeing
these figures.

Things that come to mind and are worth checking:

 - folder compression, especially for the Inbox and Outbox.

SM I've run the compleate maintenence on all folders in all accounts - it
SM only recovered some disc space, but did nothing to the CPU problems.

Did you try to check integrity of all your folders?

Do you have any Virtual Folders?

SM I think it is a regular bug, and not just the usual errors in the
SM mailbox files.

No, it's not a regular bug because regular bugs are easily reproduced
on other systems. :-)

You can sort of do that with the %Eval macro in MyMacros. Create a QT
consisting of:

%Eval(%Clipboard)

Then, copy whatever you want to execute to the clipboard (e.g.
%AbToLastName) and type QT name+Ctrl+Space.

For those who don't know, the MyMacros plug-in is available at:

duplicate folders

I recently upgraded to 2.x and so far love it, especially the virtual
folders. It's just like Outlook's virtual windows. However, for some
reason, I got duplicate folders like 4 Inbox's, Sent, Outbox etc.
When I delete one, it deletes all 4, which is not good either. I have
also deleted the account from the tree and reinserted - no change.

Anyone know why this might be? Thanks.
