I cannot agree. I'm using Outlook for work and it behaves the same as

Read EMails out of other directorys

2004-07-07 Thread Holger Schmidt
Hi,

maybe my question is something stupid, but I found no information about
this.

EMails I just write and read online, so my account uses filter to sort the
mail on topic into different directorys.
Now I want to use The_Bat to get emails from the server onto my machine.

How can I transfer emails out of other directory than the incomig one ?

Thank you for your help.

Hello Allie and Roelof,

Oh. This is likely the root of your problem. You're assuming all the
 folders are the same.

I'm not *assuming*, all my folders ARE the same.

BH What exactly do you mean by 'settings'?
Thread by references, sort on created date, that kind of things, not
 to forget purging settings.

OK. Yes, all my folders have the same settings.

Each folder can be configured to sort message lists differently,
depending on the folder view mode you configure the folder to use.

Which I didn't learn how to do until yesterday. That was one of my
questions, in the message with the subject View mode. As I haven't
tried it out yet, my folders are still the same.

So I guess my original question remains unanswered.

Better yet, have younoticed that the copy is made the moment you attach

 You can select the language?

Yes.

How do you see that it doesn't work? Won't it be/stay selected or
don't you agree with the solutions?

If AmE is chosen, every single word in the mail is underlined with
red. As soon as I choose BrE instead, the lines disappear. Very
strange indeed.

BTW, what about these two questions?

Oh, but in that case I must surely be able to manually copy all the
words in my own .dic file into UserDic? My .dic file contains
thousands of words that I've added to it over the years, and then I
wouldn't have to add each word again to TB UserDic every time it comes
 up. Am I right?

TB would have no means to distinguish between languages.

But TB UserDic now contains words from different languages. Hence my
question if I should use one dictionary for each language to add new
words to. If I add them all to UserDic, how does TB then distinguish
 between those languages?

When I first got a Laptop, I wrote asking if I needed to buy a second

So I wrote back (having as income both my own pension and my husband's

Oh, s2, the smileys are only a bit of fun from which evolved the

people are seeing as a possibility to enhance the team spirit of their
in-house networks and there are questions being asked on tbbeta the
last day or so about adding corporate logos into the
already-accomplished display of the Roguemoticons in the headers.

Bat people (even though some of them went over to the HTML side and

We'll all get tired of our new toys after awhile and use them

Did you notice in my sig (on tbot) Ex-plain-text person? That's me!

The IMAP account has similar but not the same exactly folders.

If I look at the IMAP account through webmail I have two messages in

In The Bat I have 2 (3) in the INBOX and 0 in the other folders.

Presumably I have to link The Bat folders with the IMAP account

It means that the preceeding number represents messages that are on
the server but which have not yet been sync'd locally.

Why does the number of mails in a folder keep changing up and down -
 2 then 0 then 2 then 0.

This will happen at times as TB! sorts out the counts between sync
operations. This is one piece of untidiness that I hope will
eventually be sorted out. For the time being, we have to get
accustomed to that. :/

It seems to be 0 when I highlight the folder and then back to 2 when
 I unhighlight it.

Usually, my count goes to 1 when I select the folder and then if I
leave it for a while and another sync operation is done, the count
corrects itself to what it should be.

Though the questions seem to be directed at Ken, I thought I'd answer
them myself.

BTW are you a bit experienced with IMAP and The Bat

Pretty much. I've been using it since January this year. I've seen it
develop from being almost unusable to being much better as it
currently is. I've also tried many other clients in the interim and
have a good idea of how TB!'s IMAP works when compared to other
clients. I can say without reservation that TB!'s is the most elegant
and with the other TB! features makes for the best IMAP client
available. The features just need to be ironed out, streamlined,
tidied up and made to work reliably with the different servers. A lot
has been done since I started using IMAP and I'm quite confident that
things will continue to be improved.

 - and if I have general IMAP Qs rather than Bat/IMAP specific Qs can
I chuck them at you? Have you the time/inclination?

Me? Yes. I'll probably take a while at times but I'll always answer
eventually.

I got my knuckles rapped yesterday!

If you're referring to our little exchange a while back then I guess
we haven't really met yet. Rapping your knuckles as you put it was not
at all intended. My wish is to help and not rap knuckles. I have no
desire whatsoever to rap knuckles. :)

Ask specific questions and I'll likely be able to help. Ask what is
IMAP and I'll likely give a URL or something. It's just an easier and
more efficient way of answering as general a query as that. If it's
already written elsewhere why write it again? shrug I guess if we
were previously acquainted it'd be taken as intended but there's no
prior acquaintance to form a basis for interpretation.

If you were not referring to our exchange then please just forget and
ignore the previous paragraphs which would automatically be moot.

There is no question TB has improved dramatically over the last few

considering the overall client functionality, TB has the potential of
becoming the ultimate e-mail client. However, total IMAP functionality
isn't quite there yet and is hardly the best available IMAP client

I cannot change email addresses for my 38 accounts, they are connected

That's really a shame. I love to send and get mails with real letter

The best you can do is to find an image that tiles nicely an use that
one.
If you, for example, open Outlook Express (presuming you have that
installed), you can find where the images it uses for background are by
creating a new message using a template, then go to
Format - Background - Image (I think, I am directly translating from a
Swedish OE). Or, if you're in a lazy mood, type
%CommonProgramFiles%\Microsoft Shared/Stationery/ in your
Start-menu - Run and the correct folder should open.
Remember, or write down or whatever, the file name. Then, in TB, when
you want a document background, you click the correct button, check the
Use background image, and press Load.

Hope I explained it clear enough. I'll be away from mail for a time, so
I can't answer you if you have any questions.

TB has awesome functionality. I've been using it in a production
environment for about 6 weeks and I'm still figuring out all the
functions. Almost anything is possible if one doesn't mind digging
through the list archives and seeing what other people have done. The
existing documentation leaves a lot to be desired.

I'll address the IMAP functionality and leave it to others to expand
on a lot of the other things. Needless to say, the template and filter
functionality, IMO, is its strong point.

The key issues with regards to IMAP are:

1. Draft messages are put in the local outbox folder rather than the industry
standard IMAP draft folder. For those that are used to using IMAP,
we have found this to be a significant usability issue.

2. Synchronization of the IMAP folders is much slower than Outlook or
Eudora. I am confident that this will be addressed in the near future.

3. There are some bugs in the latest public beta that requires some
patience but again, these will be fixed.

4. Not IMAP but if you are expecting Outlook address book
capabilities, the TB address book isn't quite there yet but it is
getting close. Again, you can look at other peoples experience with
the address book.

Most of the feature list works as advertised. I think you will be
extremely happy with TB if you have some patience and willing to put
in the time to learn.

Hope this helps.

I don't know if you've worked with virtual folders, but the IMAP
folders are sort of like those. The similarity is that they display a
representation of what's on the server. The difference is that the
IMAP folder actually has a cache of what you've viewed. What will help
is to browse your IMAP account in explorer. Go to your TB! mail
directory and compare a POP3 to an IMAP account. The POP account will
have a directory setup that reflects the folders in the POP account.
Each folder has a message base. Look at the IMAP account and you'll
see no directories. Only a bunch of files which are actually cached
data files for each IMAP folder on the server.

Then I have a phycical copy on my machine.

You do have a physical copy if you've actually viewed the message or
have done a full sync of message bodies. However, it's a cached copy
and not a standard message base copy.

To get copies in standard bases, you need to copy/move messages from
the IMAP server to local TB! folders. Local TB! folders are either
common folders, folders within POP accounts, or local Outbox, Inbox or
Trash folders for your IMAP account if so configured in your IMAP
account setup.

All the refs I've found suggest this has to be done using PP3 still
 - which doesn't make sense to me.

No. POP3 has nothing to do with IMAP. You don't use it at all when
using the IMAP protocol.

A: How do I get an actual copy of the email and, say, attachments on
 to my machine...

Copy, move or filter the message to a common folder or a folder within
a POP account. I've created a POP account for archiving mail. However,
I could have depended on common folders.

B: How do I know whether emails I look at using The Bat are actually
on the server or on my machine?

Once you're looking at messages using an IMAP folder, those messages
are actually on the server and you're simply browsing and caching them
pretty much as you do when browsing a website. However, unlike the
website, you have control over what you browse. You can delete, copy,
move messages as you please.

C: I have many and several filters, auto-replies, groups, and other
esoteric filter actions set up for clients' - is The Bat reliably
 processing these with IMAP mail?

It would seem that this is so. At least at my end here. However, this
sort of thing and the reliability of it depends on which IMAP server
you use. I suggest testing and seeing how it goes. I use MDaemon's
IMAP server.

What makes TB! so good as an IMAP client is that all those features
work in the main and more and more of them are being made to work.

D: I really cannot find the answer to this anywhere at all...

Well, hopefully, you've found it here. :)

I cannot change email addresses for my 38 accounts, they are connected
with web sites for clients and email newsletter software etc etc.

Why would you wish to change those addresses.

So, if I need to set up a new account to run as IMAP, how do I, for
example, change [EMAIL PROTECTED] (currently POP3) to the
same address as an IMAP account?

You need to know if the server for that account supports IMAP.

My server, MDaemon, supports both IMAP and POP3. Each account may be
managed using either of the two protocols. The same applies to my
e-mail account at work. I was accessing it using POP3, but recently
created an IMAP account in TB! and it's working well with TB!.

The key issues with regards to IMAP are:

I wanted to add a couple other lacking features that are very useful:

a) selective download message text without attachments on a per
message basis. One can then view the message body over a slow
connection without having to download large attachments. Large
attachments can be left for sessions over a faster connection.

b) download of only X amount of headers for sync operations. At the
moment TB! has to sync all headers for messages in an IMAP folder for
you to be able to read a message. The IMAP protocol does make it
possible to download only the last 50 messages. You can then choose to
download more if you like.

Additionally, the IMAP protocol makes it possible to create a list of
messages without actually downloading the full headers. Downloading
full headers takes longer than downloading only enough information to
create the message list.

c) support for colour coding messages or support for extra flags apart
from the basic read/unread forward/redirected flags. Currently all
other labelling like colour coding, TB! flagging and parking are
local. Move the message to another folder and the TB! label, flagging
is lost. Only the standard ones are preserved.

return to where ALL messages are listed again versus just the

Simply hit the Esc key.

Re: One Email Address, Multiple Names

In my family address book, I have multiple entries for the with the
 same email address. For example:

 Name Handle Address
   -- ---
 Dad dd[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Mom mm[EMAIL PROTECTED]
 Mom Dad md[EMAIL PROTECTED]

My templates use address book macros and pick up the same name no
matter whether I enter dd, mm or md. How do I get around this?

 Here's my new message macro:

 -
 %_Addr=%ABToFirstName %ABToEmail%-
 %To=%To=%_Addr%-
 %From=%ABFromFirstName %ABFromEmail%-
 Dear %ABToFirstName,

 %Cursor
 %QInclude=FamSig%-
 -

Solved! Eliminate the duplicate email addresses by appending #1, #2,
etc. to the addresses of entries with duplicate addresses. Now there
are no duplicates to confuse TB!.

I wasn't able to clear these tags in the template without causing
address book macros from picking up the wrong information. I got
around this by inserting the name of the QT that makes the change.

First, in a new line before %Cursor (see above) add:

%IF:%SETPATTREGEXP='#'%REGEXPMATCH='%To'=#%-
:Hit_Ctrl_Space:%-

Now create a QT called, of course Hit_Ctrl_Space.qt.

Here it is:

%SetPattRegExp='(.*?)#'%-
%RegExpBlindMatch(%To)%-
%To=%To=%Subpatt(1)%-

This approach fails if the To field has any address following a '#'
address. Modifying the QT so it wipes out #\d+ and calling itself
when there are any '#' remaining should solve this - maybe this
weekend?
