Ticking and/or un-ticking Quick Search and restarting TB! each time accomplishes
nothing. It remains as you see it. As mentioned in my original post, it cannot
be moved by clicking & dragging either. As an aside, it still functions as a
Quick Search.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for that Adrian, I never knew that. I always dragged the sent message

Reloading v6.0.12 msi

2023-01-05 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

My wife's search bar has migrated to obscuring part of the account tree. Nothing
I've tried will get it to move back to it's original location; not click & drag
nor selecting/de-selecting the search function in the header utilities. I still
have the 6.0.12 msi file in her downloads folder and wondered if I could just
re-run the msi file or will that change everything that has been set up for
years? I also still have the v5 keyblock which I think was used to unlock her
current TB! version.

I don't think it matters but she is running Win 11. The search bar moved long
after she started running Win 11.

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Orphaned Quick Search bar

2022-10-26 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

Something happened to my wife's TB! (ver 6.0.12) and the Quick Search bar is now
where it's not supposed to be (see attached photo). Her computer is running Win
11 if that makes any difference. The Quick Search bar does still function. I've
tried everything I can think of to get it back up top with no success.

Anyone have any ideas?

I sent a separate "redirect" to you so that you could see exactly what I see.
You'll notice that the image filenames tabs do have .jpg extensions. The

Photos no longer appearing

2022-05-19 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

We subscribe to the post office's "USPS Informed Delivery" and every day that
the post office delivers mail we get an email from them. It used to show
pictures of mail we could expect to see in our mailbox on that day. See
attachment please. If you could scroll down past the big blue bar you used to
see pictures of today's mail. It no longer displays the pictures and I haven't
changed anything that I'm aware of. If you look at the very bottom of the
attachment you'll see tabs which in this case are marked "HTML", "Text",
"Part.txt" and three tabs which when clicked on will display a piece of mail in
that space. It defaults to HTML.

This screen has always looked this way and the pieces of mail would appear below
the big blue bar when you scrolled down. They don't anymore.

Anyone have any ideas as to why this should be happening?

Maybe I'm just too old to be using a client as powerful as TB!

Rather than wait for something to come in so I could forward it to you, I took
an image from my phone and sent it to myself. Then I looked at both forwarding
and redirecting to see which would include the picture. Only redirecting would
include the picture. Then I went into account properties and looked at the
forward template. I noticed the "Forward messages as attachments (MIME
Standard)" was ticked. I un-ticked it and tried to forward the message again.
This time the picture was included in the forward.

I AM too old to be using a client as powerful as TB!

But not too old to thank you once again for helping.

Well, that makes sense. I can easily see what you're talking about. But it still
doesn't answer the question of why attachments aren't forwarded with the email.
If the screenshot comes through, you can see how my FORWARD template is set up
(never having been modified since TB! was installed). I don't see anything that

My settings appear to be the same as yours. The only difference appears to be
how that last is worded. Mine says "Forward messages as attachments (MIME
standard)" and it was NOT ticked.

I use the "Forward" icon nestled between the "Reply" and "Redirect" icons at the
top of my screen to initiate a "Forward". I'm going to try it with that box
ticked as soon as I find a good specimen to forward.

BTW, your cut mark is missing a space at the end.

I owe you an apology Miguel. After using your method of trapping a multiple list
of senders I find that it is much more "elegant" than I originally thought. It
turns out that your method is much easier to use than the "block" method I was
attempting to make work. I see that it also finds variations of the address I
was adding to the group which would have been missed had I gotten the "block"
method to work.

So, in sum, a great implementation of one of TB!'s more arcane features.

Thanks again.

Thank you Miguel, that seems to work, if a little Rube Goldbergish. Being able
to use the "block" function as part of a condition seems to me to be a little
more elegant but since I can't get it to work the way I think it should work,
I'll continue to use your method since your method DOES work.

Thank you for the suggestion Miguel but alas, no. I need to trap a bunch of ever
changing merchandise and/or political ads. Each one is different. I plan to
unsubscribe from them all but until I have the time to do I thought I'd just
have the filter mark them as READ and move them to the trash folder. I've set
the trash folder to limit quantity to 500 and to delete old ones when closing

Filter for mutiple SENDERs

2022-04-18 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

Once again I am in need of a way to filter (trap) multiple senders. So far the
only thing that has worked is OR>SENDER>CONTAINS>text for each sender. Needless
to
say, this leads to a very large filter.

I've tried stacking each sender (separated by CRLFs) which didn't work and using
the BLOCK text holder where apparently (or not) multiple senders can be loaded
in a BLOCK. That doesn't work either. So, either I'm not understanding how the
BLOCK function is supposed to be used (probable) or it just doesn't work
(un-likely).

Needless to say, any help will be greatly appreciated.

Are you familiar with "Sorting Office/Filters"? You can create a filter for the
Junk folder so that every incoming Junk message is marked as "read" as they come
in.

I'm sorry I don't have more time right now to explain how to do that but I'm

Please pardon me for butting in but may I ask why you shouldn't do a fetch more
frequently than every 30 minutes? I had to set my TB to do a fetch every 5
minutes because at the time, I needed to know as soon as a particular email came

Well Miguel, removing the password worked. TB! now opens as it had for all

The password in question is the one sent to me each month by RIT Labs. I'm
assuming everyone who uses TB! gets these same emails from RIT Labs monthly.
CTRL F12 will bring up the account password.

Now when I start TB! it opens with my account tree collapsed (it never used to
do that). When I click on the PLUS sign to expand the account tree TB! asks for
the password. Entering the password will cause the collapsed account tree to

I always close TB! when I'm done and when I go to open TB! again, it opens with

Access password

2022-01-07 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

A few days ago I received an email from a very dear friend requesting an urgent
favor. She was in need of five gift cards ASAP and couldn't get them herself as
she was suffering from a sinus infection. She is the type of person who would
put herself in the position of needing presents for friends post haste. Her
request was not out of the ordinary. I immediately went to my local CVS pharmacy
and bought five Apple gift cards. Never having done this before I had no idea
how to get them to her. However, her instructions were to photograph the cards
and send her the photographs. Not a problem. I photographed each card separately
and emailed the photos to her by replying to her original request. A grievous
mistake as you'll see.

After a few hours I decided to call her to see if she had received the photos.
As soon as she realized what I had done, she freaked out and said she had been
hacked. Sure enough, when I looked at the sender's email address originally
requesting the cards, it wasn't hers. I had fallen for a spoof email and sent
negotiable photos worth $500 to bad actors.

I immediately called Apple and the agent checked and saw that the cards had not
been used yet so he was able to void all 5 cards. So the cards are no longer
good and cannot be used. Hooray for my side! But I was out $500 and further
checking with CVS Pharmacy and the credit card company (Visa) proved fruitless.
The money was gone and could not be reimbursed. I made a stupid mistake and it
cost me.

Because of this I decided to change the "access password" on my TB! account, not
necessarily out of fear that I might be in danger of hacking as well but more
because I hadn't changed that password in years. After changing the password I
realized I should have changed my email password instead of my TB! account
password. So I put my account password back to what it was originally and
changed my email password. Now every time I try to look at my mail, TB insists
that I enter my account password, after which, everything is displayed normally.
Anyone have any idea how I can get TB! to stop asking for my password every
time?

I all the years I've used TB! this has never happened. Of course in all those
years I've never changed my account password either.

Sometime later still licking my wounds I wondered how idiots like me could be
automatically protected from this type of crime. It occurred to me that if TB!
were to compare all incoming email addresses to my address book, those for which
there wasn't a match could be displayed in red. Agreed, most of them wouldn't
match and would be flagged in red but I wouldn't recognize or care about the
sender anyway. Those would be discarded by me as they always are. But if I did
recognize the sender and their address was displayed in red, I would know
immediately something was amiss. Had this feature been implemented I would have
seen that my friend's address was flagged which would have caused me to check it
and I would have seen that it was not my friend's real address.

If anyone knows how to get TB! to stop requiring my password every time I try to
view my mail I'd sure appreciate knowing the fix. And I'd like to know what you
think about automatically flagging unknown addresses.

I did not mean to imply that these features were new and unknown. On the

So, as a last resort, I had to actually search for the answer for myself. What I
found was that the dictionary controls are available only when composing a
message, as far as I can tell. Please see attached (I hope) screen grab. If you
are able to see the attached photo you'll see that SPELL CHECKER is in the top
menu bar. Clicking on that option yields the context menu you see. Although
AUTOMATIC CHECKING seems to be selected, I clicked on one of the other options
and then back to AUTOMATIC CHECKING. From that point on (as you can see) the
spell checker started working. Also, right-clicking on a flagged word brings up
a context menu which includes the option to add the word to the dictionary.
Given that you and I are using widely separated versions of TB!, YMMV.

I have no idea why it stopped working to begin with but at this point I'm taking
what I can get.

That MAY have worked Stuart. Un-fortunately, I had a couple of conditions set in
the actual filter from previous tests, and in my haste to try your suggestion I
overlooked them. This caused many emails to get moved to the destination folder
that shouldn't have. I'll have to weed out those inadvertant moves and compare
the final count of emails to the count before the re-filter to see if it has
gone up.

I'll let you know.

Many thanks Stuart.

Thank you Miguel. I'm going to try your suggestion.

However, if this .png makes it through (it's only 4KB), it'll show how the
filter is built. Notice the up/down arrows to the right of the box displaying
"email address 5". clicking those arrows will move you up or down through all
the 127 *actual* addresses entered in the "block".

It seems so simple and as I mentioned, a "re-filter" action on the source folder
did find 39 of the emails contained in the block of addresses. But only on the
first re-filter. Subsequent re-filterings MOVED no more addresses. Even
changing the condition ie: SENDER, TEXT, HEADER, MESSAGE SOURCE, or HEADER FIELD
had no effect. It never did find any more of the multitude of addresses
contained in the block.

Filter help

2021-07-20 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

I have a folder which contains multiple unique emails from a particular group of
people. They were originally moved there manually. I wanted to create a filter
for the source folder to look for the characters in their email addresses which
appear before the @ sign, then move those emails to the aforementioned
destination folder. When I re-filtered the source folder, only about 39 of the
emails actually got moved. Many more which met the criteria specified in the
filter were never moved. I double and tripled checked for typing errors and
there were none.

I can't pinpoint the 39 that were moved because the destination folder had over
a hundred already-read emails and the emails that didn't get moved from the
source folder were also already-read.

I used the block option in the creation of the filter because there were so many
(about 128) addresses I wanted caught. In the re-filter options of the source
folder I chose incoming mail, read mail and replied messages all at once.

Anyone have any idea why the filter caught 39 of them and not any of the others?

Search function

2021-06-01 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

I am completely flummoxed by the search function. It does not seem to make any
sense and although it seems to be intuitive, apparently it isn't.

Specifically, I was searching for a three letter string (lwv) and it returned
dozens and dozens of "hits", none of which appeared to contain that three letter
string. I used all the criteria available (text, header, any, etc.) and although
the results were different, none of the hits contained the string.

Does it actually work or am I just missing something?

I've found that if you start a new email and place your cursor in the TO field,
the little address book icon appears at the far right of the field. Clicking on
the icon will of course open your address book. Select a group (folder) and open
it. In the column of arrows the second one down is a double-right arrow. When
you click on that double-right arrow it will place the name of the group
(folder) in the box to the right. However, you'll see that if the group has two
names as in "The Group", it will reverse the names as "GroupThe". Take that into
consideration.

I tried it with a folder I have called MISC and it displayed it in the right box
as "Misc_handle " so you'll probably have to play around to get it to
display correctly.

Good luck.

2: All my addresses in the address book are now showing in the PERSONAL ADDRESS

re-distribute them?

I think I need someone to define the purpose of the cut mark because I thought
it was to automatically eliminate everything below the cut mark (including the
cut mark) when replying. When I clicked REPLY to this email Mike, your cut mark
and everything below it is visible.

For what it's worth, my editor is automatically set to Plain Text(MicroEd)
whenever I communicate with this list. Somewhere in the distant past it was
recommended to use Plain Text(MicroEd) for this list.

Hmmm, very interesting. When I reply to this (your) email, I'm replying with
your email quoted in the my reply. Your entire sig appears, cut mark, Warmest
regards etc. If I "select" (highlight) your cut mark, the highlight stops after
the two dashes. It does not stop after the trailing dash as you would expect
indicating that the trailing space is not there. This is what prompted me to
remark on it in the first place.

However, since this email also contains my original email to you, my sig is
displayed also which means mine didn't work either. If I try to select
(highlight) my cut mark. It will highlight the two dashes but not the trailing
space. Actually since my sig appears in the first place it would indicate that
my cut mark doesn't work also. And I *know* my cut mark is dash, dash, space.
It would seem that TB is stripping the trailing space on our cut marks thereby
rendering them inoperative. Or I've totally misconstrued the function of the cut
marks in the first place.

Bulk mailings

2021-01-20 Thread Jack S. LaRosa
Hello TBUDL'ers,

My wife's TB (same version as mine 6.0.12) seems to have developed a problem
with mass mailings (more than one recipient). I tried to send myself a message
from her computer using the protocol I learned from this group. Namely, address
the email to yourself (her) and put everyone else's in the BCC field. So, from
her TB I addressed the email as FROM (her) and in the BCC field I put my two
email addresses. When I press SEND the COMMUNICATION CENTER appears and shows
the message being sent. The log status bar at the bottom of the screen says that
1 message had been sent. However, I never got the email in one of the accounts.
When I look at the log contents, these lines are shown:

<1/20/2021, 10:09:28: SEND - message to em...@address.net and others sent
(1512 bytes)
!1/20/2021, 10:09:28: FETCH - Connection to host broken (last commands sent
were: "DATA", "RSET")
1/20/2021, 10:09:28: SEND - connection finished - 1 message(s) sent

What does "connection to host broken" mean and could that line explain why the
message was received in only one of my accounts and not both?

If so, where do I start looking for the problem?

Not sure if this will help because I'm using an older version of TB but if you
go to OPTIONS-PREFERENCES-EDITOR PREFERENCES, then in the box that appears is
"Wrap text at xx characters".

By the way, your cut-mark doesn't seem to be working. It seems to be lacking the
trailing space. It should be DASH-DASH-SPACE.

Good luck.

This won't be very helpful I'm afraid except misery loves company. I have
always had problems with searching my emails. As you stated above you get heaps
of results none of which have anything to do with the header entered. I get
those same results almost every time I search for something. It helps sometimes
to change the search target. Instead of HEADER you can try TEXT or ANY PART.
This works sometimes but not nearly often enough. Either we're doing something
wrong or it just doesn't work correctly.

BTW, apparently your cut mark doesn't work as you can see. It has to be dash
dash space. I think you're missing the trailing space.

I suspect it's me, particularly since no one else seems to have mentioned it but
your emails have started to come through as black on black text. Your cut mark
and the rest of your sig is pale gray on black. It's only if I click on REPLY

One thing you might want to check is if there's some program that's hogging CPU
time. Move your cursor down into the task bar and right-click. Then click on
TASK MANAGER. When it comes up click on the header POWER USAGE to get the most
hungry app to the top. (My apologies if you're already familiar with this).

Microsoft automatically runs a program called "Anti Malware Service Executable"
(MsMpEng.exe). It's an anti-malware program which has lately (on my computer)
become VERY demanding of CPU time. I have begun to have constant problems with
this program freezing my computer until it releases the CPU. It has high
priority
and cannot be made lower priority.

Just a thought.

Hi Marck, the following is an email you sent me several years ago. Still valid?

Dear Jack,

in mid:1683949350.20171118231...@charter.net said to MFPA:

It would.

It is.

M>> I have never noticed anybody getting "trouted" when they posted links
M>> to screenshots. So it has been accepted, which I guess means it is
M>> acceptable.

JSL> Thanks M. I'll see what happens.

Here's the lore:

Attachments (inc screen-shots) are perfectly acceptable (although HTML
messages are frowned upon because they invariably double the size of
any simple message and our transmission facilities are provided FOC by
a generous host, on whose generosity I /know/ none of us would wish to
over-impose).

...HOWEVER...

There are limits to the size of permitted attachments. 25k on TBUDL
and 75k on TBBETA. If your screen-shot is small enough, attach it by
all means. You can even chance it. The worst that can happen is an
automated rejection from the Mailman server.

I hope that clarifies things.

As you can see above, your entire sig is present in this reply. However, if I
place the cursor at the beginning of the dash-dash-space in your email above and
press END on my keyboard, the cursor goes only to the end of the last dash. If
there was a space there I would think the cursor would have stopped one space
beyond the last dash.

When I reply to the email I sent you on 1 Sep 2019, none of my original sig on
that email appears in the reply. Exactly the opposite of what you're
experiencing.

I may not be explaining myself adequately. For instance, in replying to this

thought your sig cutoff and everything below it should not be there when I click
REPLY and the editor window opens.

Hello TBUDL'ers,

I just noticed that the sig cutoff "-- " doesn't seem to work when I reply, or
