I found a setting in Account (properties) / Trabnsport / Protocol logging, 
which includes a pathspec. It's likely that the restore from backup of the 
account properties on the new computer brought across the old path in there.

Ah  -  that  old  chestnut.  This  one has been reported before but is
actually  covered in Options. See the "Quote name limit" option in the
Preferences..  View  /  editor..  Editor.  This  value states how many
characters  are  used  to  denote a quote prefix. Reduce this value to
reduce the effect. It is set to 20 on my system.

Not quite. I offered years ago. Leif wasn't willing to pass the code /
db  over to host at Silverstones and that's how it was left. Even with
a  volunteer with a Apache/MySQL/PHP server we would still need to get
the  site  code  and  db  dump  from  Leif, who may or may not be more
willing now.

Most  of my templates are at Address Book Group level. This has always
proved most effective. Folder level templates have always had unwanted
behaviours  where  the folder focused in the main UI can override that
of  a message open in a browse window for a different folder. Although
that  is  a rare malfunction, it was enough to have me lean toward the
target  address governing the quoting and formatting requirements of a
reply.

I've  never  seen  it  in an RFC - certainly not in the original email

This  content  type  was  not included. It may be due to the fact that
HTML messages are against the list rules, so not sanctioned as a type.

I  accept  that  this is 2020 and HTML email has become ubiquitous. In
order  to move forward, I won't remove the "rule" that HTML is frowned
upon,  but  I  won't  enforce  it  and  I  have  added the type to the
permitted content list on the server.

I  may  have  inadvertently broken a permitted types definition on the
server.

My suspicion is that it is about HTML and multipart encoding.

In the case of TBUDL, this seems to be happening regardless of size. I
have  looked  but  the  settings don't specify to do that. The hosting
server  has  shifted twice since we started to use the current rack. I
am not necessarily confident that the settings have ported correctly.

This  footer  used to be maintained by admins every time a new release
came  from RITlabs, often with a slight lag. Max asked to control this
automatically  and  this was being done for a while. Then they stopped
updating  it.  I guess it's down to me again. (I am the sole admin and
mod these days, everyone else having resigned from the list). Max took
it over because I was updating it when the MSI was released to TBBETA,
not  in  new the loop otherwise as to when a particular version became
the current release.

These  things are still true. I have checked the settings on the TBUDL
server  and can't see that attachments are prohibited in any way other
than the 25kb message size restriction. I still don't know why my 14kb
image  didn't  make it through intact. Perhaps something to do with my
PGP sig.

I know that HTML mails with embedded images and image attachments work
perfectly on the TBBETA list. Just not here in TBUDL, it seems..

Having  seen  the other answers, I note that the actual working answer
hasn't been presented, so I'll give it a go.

a:  create new filter with 2 conditions "Sender in Group A" or "Sender
in Group B" and no action.

b: Now create 3 Subfilters of that top level filter

   1) If sender in Group A copy to Folder A and continue processing
   2) If sender in Group B copy to Folder B and continue processing
   3) delete the message and stop.

This  will  give you the functionality you're looking for. I have many
nested and structured filters like this. They work well.

Oh  - it is a complete recreation. Like I said, It took me ages. But I
had over 500,000 emails in what was my main pop3 account.

My  apologies for not noticing this sooner. Yes, we have migrated to a
new  physical  server within the same rack. The migration was supposed
to have been seamless, but there have been a couple of quirks.

I have now corrected the "preferred domain" setting so this should now
be corrected.

Actually - looking again, it's a mess!! I see messages in the list
that TB says are from me but, when I click on them, I see Maria or
Roelof are the actual senders in the From address on TBOT. I see a
transition in another list over the new year. A late December message
shows the "From" in an almost correct manner while a message from the
same individual in the same format with very similar headers is just
showing the list address as the "From".

I am adding a confirmation to the bug report.

Apologies for my incorrect analysis in the first place!

Here's the lore:

Attachments (inc screen-shots) are perfectly acceptable (although HTML
messages  are  frowned upon because they invariably double the size of
any simple message and our transmission facilities are provided FOC by
a generous host, on whose generosity I /know/ none of us would wish to
over-impose).

...HOWEVER...

There  are  limits  to the size of permitted attachments. 25k on TBUDL
and  75k  on TBBETA. If your screen-shot is small enough, attach it by
all  means.  You  can  even chance it. The worst that can happen is an
automated rejection from the Mailman server.


I hope that clarifies things.

I   didn't   actually   see  the  offending  email.  I  think  my  own
(Silverstones) email server must have weeded it out before delivery.

There are no spam filters on the list server that I am aware of and if
an email arrives for distribution with a valid from address that is in
the membership list, there is no protection. I am not surprised it got
through.  It  won't  be  the fault of the owner of the from address as
these  things  are  nearly always faked from sold spammer lists by the
sender.

Not  at  all  in this instance. During March, Johannes contacted me to
let  me  know  that  the  current hosting server would be changing for
various  technical reasons. Clearly, the new mailman server is sending
out  reminders  in  tandem  with  the original. I will mention this to
Johannes  and see why two reminders were sent. It seems to me that the
old  server, while no longer responsible for sending out the list mail
itself,  is  still  running  and  thus  sent the old list subscription
reminders.

to  see  yours. That's what roguemoticons are all about. If you wish

containing  all  the  files  you'll  need to be able so see people's

 TBUDL Mission statement

The  TBUDL  list  has  been set up for the purpose of discussing The
Bat! and how to use it. It is a community of users ready and able to
help  new  users  get to grips with some of the capabilities of this
flexible  email  client.  More  complex  issues are discussed on the
TBTECH list (see below for details).

Simply  send  messages to mailto:TBUDL@thebat.dutaint.com to send it
to the whole list.

See  the  notes  at the end of this message for details about how to
manage your list membership or to leave the list.


It  would probably be a good idea for you to set up a folder to keep
TBUDL  messages  in.  If  you do this, the next most useful thing to
have  in  place  is an automatic filter to move mail from your inbox
into your TBUDL folder.

Set up a filter for incoming mail which looks for:

Header Field [Reply-To] Contains [TBUDL@thebat]


The Roguemoticon Project


It's  nice to see your contact's face in the header ... and for them
to  see  yours. That's what roguemoticons are all about. If you wish
to add yourself, then you'll need to visit this site

What  this  place  will  do  for  you  is  to allow you to create an
account,  add  your  image  and  then  let  you download a .ZIP file
containing  all  the  files  you'll  need to be able so see people's
faces  without  having  to  send  or  receive any real images in any
messages.

To trigger the roguemoticon display in the message header for anyone
reading  your  message  using  TB,  you have the choice of using the
X-Rogue: header or a signature trigger.

  How to use a signature trigger
The  image  is  triggered  by  a 'Handle' you've defined in your
account,  and  when  that  Handle  appears  in a message it gets
replaced on the client side by the corresponding image. A handle
could  look  like anything you want it to look like pretty much.
For example:

Just add this text to your standard message signature block.

  How to create the X-Rogue: header
You can do that with this macro:
%SetHeader('X-Rogue',':your_handle:')%-  in  your  templates for
this and other tb-lists.
However, the macro alone won't do the trick.
TB'll  say: 'Hey, that's not any RFC822 header I know about', so
you'll have to define it as such:
Options  ..  Preferences .. Messages .. Message headers .. 'Add'

Now you'll get a pop-up to define the header

  Display as: X-Rogue (or whatever, it isn't very important)
  RFC header: X-Rogue
  Uncheck: 'This field is an address list' (because it isn't)
  Check: 'Allow this field to be edited in the message editor'
  Uncheck:  'Display  this  field  in the scrollable part of the
  header pane'

Now you're done and every TB-user can see your lovable face when
they've installed the roguemoticons.

For you to see peoples faces:

  To get this going, you should be running TB! v2.12 or later. Fetch

  Unzip it to the 'Images' directory that's in your TB! installation
  directory: C:\Program Files\The Bat!\Images

At  the  time  of writing HTML formatting had apparently been fixed in
the  latest  versions.  The BugTraq report has even been closed.

Since  then,  I  too have been disappointed to see images swelling the
HTML  again and have reported this to the developers. My apologies for
the mislead - entirely unintentional, I assure you. I will be pressing
RITlabs  to  re-open  the bug report to allow further investigation of
the issue.

Essentially, yes.

I wouldn't know whether or not they look "correct" since I haven't
compared. All I can say for certain is that this specific bug was
called out as a bug, addressed a month or so back in the beta version
and has been fixed. This fix has improved my personal reading of HTML
mails with embedded pictures to a point of near perfection rather than
sprawling the message to the width of the largest picture and not
scaling.

I'm not certain of the release state of the fixed version.

That's nothing to do with "Authentication". That's to do with
transport encryption, which is not the problem and is working fine
according to the logs you have sent here.

Next to the SMTP server name edit box is a button labelled
"Authentication" (or your local language variation on that word).
That's where your problem lies - in the options within.

I think I said quite early on that the failure here is authentication
mid:336247396.20160602113...@silverstones.com - nothing to do with
SSL/STARTTLS/Certificates. Have you toggled the "Require secure
authentication" option?

The above section states that handshaking completed and looks
successful.

And this is where it goes wrong - authentication. Something is failing
there. It tries a plain authentication and fails after a 60 second
timeout. Second attempt is just shown as '(login)'. The "0 messages
sent" response is instant, implying an authentication failure.

My first guess would be that the hotel wifi blocks port 25 to prevent
guests spambot infested systems spewing junk from their connection.
Your mainstream accounts will likely be using SMTP over the secure 465
port, which is usually open for use on public networks. It is highly
possible that your personal domain email accounts are not configured
to use TLS, SLL or StartTLS so get blocked from using port 25.

It  would probably be a good idea for you to set up a folder to keep

The Roguemoticon Project


It's  nice to see your contact's face in the header ... and for them
to  see  yours. That's what roguemoticons are all about. If you wish
to add yourself, then you'll need to visit this site

What  this  place  will  do  for  you  is  to allow you to create an
account,  add  your  image  and  then  let  you download a .ZIP file
containing  all  the  files  you'll  need to be able so see people's
faces  without  having  to  send  or  receive any real images in any
messages.

To trigger the roguemoticon display in the message header for anyone
reading  your  message  using  TB,  you have the choice of using the
X-Rogue: header or a signature trigger.

  How to use a signature trigger
The  image  is  triggered  by  a 'Handle' you've defined in your
account,  and  when  that  Handle  appears  in a message it gets
replaced on the client side by the corresponding image. A handle
could  look  like anything you want it to look like pretty much.
For example:

Just add this text to your standard message signature block.

  How to create the X-Rogue: header
You can do that with this macro:
%SetHeader('X-Rogue',':your_handle:')%-  in  your  templates for
this and other tb-lists.
However, the macro alone won't do the trick.
TB'll  say: 'Hey, that's not any RFC822 header I know about', so
you'll have to define it as such:
Options  ..  Preferences .. Messages .. Message headers .. 'Add'

Now you'll get a pop-up to define the header

  Display as: X-Rogue (or whatever, it isn't very important)
  RFC header: X-Rogue
  Uncheck: 'This field is an address list' (because it isn't)
  Check: 'Allow this field to be edited in the message editor'
  Uncheck:  'Display  this  field  in the scrollable part of the
  header pane'

Now you're done and every TB-user can see your lovable face when
they've installed the roguemoticons.

For you to see peoples faces:

  To get this going, you should be running TB! v2.12 or later. Fetch
  the following file:

  Unzip it to the 'Images' directory that's in your TB! installation
  directory: C:\Program Files\The Bat!\Images
  You  should  now  have a directory called 'rogues' containing many
  images  as well as the file 'rogues.msl' in your Images directory.
  Go into the preferences, and bring up the View/Editor options. Now
  hit  Shift-CTRL-Alt-T  while  TB!  is in focus. This will re-fetch
  TB!'s smiley set from disk and load the new images.

Not with forward, but if you use Reply then invoke a spamfwd quick
template that reformats the message using %text macros etc. then you
can get the functionality you are looking for.

It's actually only one extra step over having a safe forward
function and I think that's not too much overhead for the frequency of
use.

M I think I have missed something: I can't see how this is better than
M simply deleting the attachments from a Forward before sending it.

A QT can be configured to fire on a hotkey. So it becomes Reply, hit
hotkey, Send. It is more fiddly and time consuming to manually remove
attachments.

Efficiency! :-)

I was also a one time Eudora user. There is nothing Eudora did that TB
doesn't do better. There is also a large list of things TB does that
Eudora doesn't. It just takes getting used to the differences and
getting to grips with the new paradigm.

Correct. That usually creates an ever growing reply chain full of
redundant information.

Because TB is a threading email client, it is easy to find references.
Despite the worldwide acceptance of top posting a quick response, it
is only really valid in an a context where a small number of committed
recipients are completely au-fait with the topic being discussed.

In a mass mailing list such as this, anybody interested in joining in
with the thread topic only reads a disjointed, out-of-context sound
bite at the top of a fully quoted message, giving the reader the added
duty of scrolling down to read previous statements and try to
determine context from there.

Imagine reading a joke like that:

Terrible

 How does it smell?

 My dog has no nose
`--\ End /--

When reply to the TB list, the expectation is that you hit the Reply
button and trim out all extraneous text to reduce the quotes and any
response message to a highly legible synopsis and easy-to-read entry
point for anybody else wishing to help.

Top posting is a turn off when it comes to others chiming in.

Right. To clarify - '\n' as a literal within a single cookie line will
line-break the cookie when used from the macro. That was what I
thought you meant. And I was suggesting that replacing '\n' with br
should add a line break within the cookie line in an HTML template.

It was a guess, so I could be wrong.

Hmmm. Not sure what that should look like. In HTML \n is irrelevant.
Any hard line breaks would normally be encoded as br. How that
applies to cookie files I wouldn't know.

My first and most likely suspect in this instance would be the IMAP
server software. When in IMAP mode, The Bat! can only show you what
the server tells it is available. I know that attachments I receive
come through exactly as I would expect them.

You should inspect the message source and check the headers in the
attachment section of the message, which should include some of e.g.

 Content-Type: application/octet-stream; name=part.att
 Content-Description: part.att
 Content-Disposition: attachment; filename=part.att; size=;

This would demonstrate that the server configuration is at fault by
forcing an inappropriate attachment name.

This is the exact purpose for which the Mass Mailing feature was
designed. It will mean generating individual emails for each

You create your entire message as a Mass Mailing Template. These are
Quick templates, created in the Quick Template editor that have the

by using other fields of the address book to conditionally add or
remove whole paragraphs, but that means getting fairly sophisticated.

account,  add  your  image  and  then  let  you download a .ZIP file
containing  all  the  files  you'll  need to be able so see people's
faces  without  having  to  send  or  receive any real images in any

To trigger the roguemoticon display in the message header for anyone
reading  your  message  using  TB,  you have the choice of using the
X-Rogue: header or a signature trigger.

  How to use a signature trigger
The  image  is  triggered  by  a 'Handle' you've defined in your
account,  and  when  that  Handle  appears  in a message it gets
replaced on the client side by the corresponding image. A handle
could  look  like anything you want it to look like pretty much.

It's a whole turnaround procedure. An email address has to be

Given that in the 13 years we've been running the list, this is the
2nd person to be banned for spamming, do you think you may be
overthinking the issue? :)

JS If this is an US company, I'm pretty sure the e-mail is not in
JS accordance with CAN-SPAM act, which should carry a fine should
JS somebody report them.

I've had a bit of a dig around on the FCC and FTC sites. The FCC has
a complaints procedure but it doesn't apply to email. I was unable
to easily locate an equivalent at the FTC, who are responsible for
email policing. Anybody else want a try and can get me a link, I
have no problem about reporting this spam.

flowery up his approach may simply not be in his instant

AM So what is causing this

If you have multiple messages that refer to the same attachment,
each message MUST have its own copy of that attachment so that, when
message A and attachments are deleted, message B still has its
attached files available and intact.

AM and what can I do to address this?

Keep attachments in the message bodies. It doesn't change anything
except that connected attachments are more obviously attributed to
the message that owns them rather than giving a poor illusion of
cascading duplication in an externalised attachment folder.

account,  add  your  image  and  then  let  you download a .ZIP file
containing  all  the  files  you'll  need to be able so see people's
faces  without  having  to  send  or  receive any real images in any
messages.

To trigger the roguemoticon display in the message header for anyone
reading  your  message  using  TB,  you have the choice of using the
X-Rogue: header or a signature trigger.

  How to use a signature trigger
The  image  is  triggered  by  a 'Handle' you've defined in your
account,  and  when  that  Handle  appears  in a message it gets
replaced on the client side by the corresponding image. A handle
could  look  like anything you want it to look like pretty much.
For example:

Just add this text to your standard message signature block.

  How to create the X-Rogue: header
You can do that with this macro:
%SetHeader('X-Rogue',':your_handle:')%-  in  your  templates for
this and other tb-lists.
However, the macro alone won't do the trick.

you'll have to define it as such:
Options  ..  Preferences .. Messages .. Message headers .. 'Add'

Now you'll get a pop-up to define the header

  Display as: X-Rogue (or whatever, it isn't very important)
  RFC header: X-Rogue
  Uncheck: 'This field is an address list' (because it isn't)
  Check: 'Allow this field to be edited in the message editor'
  Uncheck:  'Display  this  field  in the scrollable part of the
  header pane'

Now you're done and every TB-user can see your lovable face when
they've installed the roguemoticons.

For you to see peoples faces:

  To get this going, you should be running TB! v2.12 or later. Fetch
  the following file:

  Unzip it to the 'Images' directory that's in your TB! installation
  directory: C:\Program Files\The Bat!\Images
  You  should  now  have a directory called 'rogues' containing many

  hit  Shift-CTRL-Alt-T  while  TB!  is in focus. This will re-fetch

Okay, so it's an HTML formatted template. That would be more
complicated to copy into a quick template. Where is it? What is it a
template for??? New Message? Reply? Account or Address book? Please
answer these questions inline so we have a context and point of
reference for any replies you make.

So - perhaps you can't just copy and paste an HTML template. I don't
know. I don't use HTML in email.

can't do if the handle has a space in it!

Here's the optimal way to use multiple template configurations in
TB. Quick Templates.

Use highlight the template content that you want to keep and press
Ctrl-C to copy it to the clipboard.

Open the Quick Templates interface. Create a new Quick Template and
paste your copied template into the body. Create another new Quick
Template for as many variations as you want to have.

Now go back to the original template. If your Quick Template was
(for example) labelled with a tag of MyQT1 then replace the
entire template with a single line that reads:

%qinclude MyQT1

In this way, you can set up as many templates or bits of templates
as you wish and pull them into a real template with the %qinclude
macro.
