I see. Your point is taken - RSS folders are normal local folders, so there
should be a way to move them around and keep under other locally stored
folders, not just under the "RSS Subscriptions". Wish added :-)

Wrote a bit too quick... they're stored indeed in its own folder each, but under
an automatically new created account "RSS Subscriptions".
I tried to create them as part of an existing mail-account where they would fit

This error usually means that the mail client tried using a non-ASCII character
in the envelope (typically a typo in the e-mail address, though I'm not sure
how TB would trigger this, because it properly encodes non-ASCII addresses).

Ticking and/or un-ticking Quick Search and restarting TB! each time accomplishes
nothing. It remains as you see it. As mentioned in my original post, it cannot
be moved by clicking & dragging either. As an aside, it still functions as a

Thanks, Adrian.  I now see what happened:  the menu got displaced from where it
usually is, for some reason, and was above the folders  on the left-hand side
of the window, rather than above the tool bar.   So, I didn't think to click on

There is a slightly awkward way of doing it, that is to type (c ) (which has an
extra space between the "c" and the ")") and then go back and delete that
space. The required (c) then stays .

Re-running the MSI file is unlikely to change anything, since those settings
are per-user, and installers don't touch user settings at all.

Instead, check if you have userdef.xml file in the mail storage directory, and
if you do, try renaming it – I think that file contains toolbar position

You can change where your mail database is stored. It does not change where the

This seems to be a feature of the PureHTML editor, and I haven't found a way to
turn it off. If you switch to RichText editor instead (which is slightly more

Hi Miguel,

Thanks very much for answering. I realised fairly soon that this list wasn't
very busy, so I sent an email to Ritlabs, and they answered very quickly.

In case it helps anyone else, they said:

"Newer versions of The Bat! are backwards compatible, this means the latest The
Bat! v10 will be able to restore backups created in v4 or any other earlier
version of the program.

If you have large accounts, then consider creating separate .tbk backups for
each account."

So I split up my very large accounts into a series of smaller ones, downloaded
v10, and
the restore function worked perfectly!

I've been using v10 for a few days now, and I haven't noticed any problems with
it.

I'm very happy, because I have a huge number of emails dating back around 20
years, and I can now search and retrieve them very easily on my new W11 machine.

It is best wthout autoupdate, but when you run for the first time use the

Haven't heard of this happening before.

I suggest doing a backup of your working version 9 files. Then try installing

Hello Thomas,

I fixed this problem for a new gmail account. The protocol type on the very

that at "Auto", it makes an IMAP account. It used to be the case that you

That should have been "reinstall version 10.2.1".
Another thought struck me. Are you using the normal (WITHOUT autoupdate)
version or the alternative "with autoupdate" version? I always use the former.

just an update - since I archived my emails I had to check on something

the easy way to check an email is not possible if I cannot find the account.
Any idea why this is now hidden and how to look for it - any trick to "unhide

and one more update - not sure why but after restarting TB the Account Archive
is shown again and I am able to open my emails with password again. I would
normally assume it was there all the time and I was not looking properly but I
did check several times very slowly and in particular at the bottom of my
Accounts tree. That's where I "parked" this account and it was not showing

Re: Upgrading to version 10

2022-10-05 Thread Adrian Godfrey
There are two versions, one with and one without autoupdate.
Whichever one you use, it overwrites everything in "program files\The Bat". If
you use the version WITHOUT autoupdate, it is no different than upgrading from
previous versions.
But the one with autoupdate installs files in an "AppData" directory of
whichever Windows user you login with rather than a subdirectory of" Program
Files"
It took some fiddling to get Version 9 and Version 10 installed simultaneously,
but there is a very useful REG option for the command line in the shortcut of
Version 10.

I actually decided on the Version 10 without autoupdate and installed it in the
usual "program files" directory. It is not difficult to use "run as
administrator".

If you mean the post dated August 6 at 09:27 with the subject "sigdash", it was
retrieved today (August 12) and I let The Bat check for mail every 30 minutes
for all my e-mail addresses every day, but sometimes I set to "offline" during
the night. It looks like there are delays at the server for this mailing list.
There are two other mails, one dated August 11 and one August 12 that also did
not get retrieved until today August 12.

Re: Undeliberately deleted messages?

2022-07-22 Thread REZK945
Hi all,
ok, the "solution" (workaround) is to disable the inbox folder settings
concerning maximum number of messages and time period for saving messages, as
well as deleting old messages at program exit.
I don't know what's going wrong that messages get deleted when I set the values
to 500 / 550, the deleted emails are the new ones, not the old ones. The
messages which are marked as parked haven't been deleted before in the error
mode.

Weird.

If I try running all options in the Maintenance Centre manually then, apart from some options showing in a corrupted font when running, it finishes all tasks OK.

Anyone know why TB! is taking it upon itself to maintain folders or whatever it's trying to overnight without being asked to?

Thanks.

This is now becoming intolerable and unless I can find a fix I have to choose between an earlier TB, and lose full access to GMAIL, or keep the current one and have it lock up every time I close the Windows Remote DEesktop cconnection to the remote Windows 7 PC it is running on.

I suspect a file or something from my previous legacy version is lurking somewhere and effecting things. I have never come across any application run remotely that "knows" the remote connection has been closed and takes it upon itself to "do thing". How can this occur and are there any logging options to help find the cause please?

Glad my finding Thomas' message was useful to you.

What would be a highly useful feature to me would be to have a function where
you command TB to make a new database mimicking the current ones structure, but
with all folders showing an Archive and pre date identifier.

So one would select an account, select a cut off month and year and tell it to
archive, the result being a separate database created on a destination medium
of user choice, containing only messages created or received pre whatever month
and year. The database remaining within TB would then only contain messages
created or received after the cut off date desired.

Hi Chris,

I finally got around to doing this and I am happy to report a successful
outcome.
All these older messages are now combined in subfolders under Archive XXX and
having this Account stored on a separate drive, does indeed reduce the size
used for
my main OS and any twice-weekly backups. The size for the TBK complete backup
file has reduced from 16.2 gb to 5.8 gb.
The benefit of the password protection of the account compared to my original
idea of just
moving the actual folders somewhere else is that I can now still open the
archive easily and
check on something if necessary. Based on my experience that the minute you
clear out something, you will need it,
this is quite a nice benefit. The only drawback I found was that moving
messages was a bit more involved than
using cut/paste of some folders.

Thanks Chris and Thomas for the suggestion.

Cheers
Tom

I am getting old and forgetful. It suddenly occurred to me that I had once
asked a similar question here, and as I have kept all messages from starting to
use TB! I found it for you. See below, Thomas Fernandez answered and although
based on an earlier TB! version his response should still be applicable, I
would have thought.

What I do is I "archive" old messages to other folders. For example, I
name a subfolder "2016" and then move all messages from that year into
that subfolder. This keep each folder with a manageable size. (Make
sure you compact the folders in which the messages were stored
previously.)

If you want to store those messages somewhere else, you create a dummy
account called "Archive". Under Account / Properties / Files &
Directories, you to an external drive or a drive in the cloud (nobody
uses tape or DVD any more). This way, you don't need to keep them on
your computer's hard disk.

Thomas.

Used to be that TB was a bit slow (=5 seconds) to open folders with more than
~9000 messages, but this hasn't been the case in a while (despite me keeping
the message base on spinning rust, not SSD).

As for why I keep all of it? Because it's less work than not keeping it.

As my sig hopefully shows I got v10.0.10 working. The only issue is it saw
duplicates (which really existed) in my address book, but the Bat! splash
screen hid the overwrite confirmation box and I had to keep using Task Manager
to get rid of the main splash screen to enable each confirmation. I deleted all
the duplicates in the end, and it has calmed down now :)

Only disappointment so far is that in my preferred threaded view mode the
interconnecting lines between messages have gone and are replaced by arrows and
unmarked indents. I do not suppose there's a way of getting the thread lines
back is there?

I have the message bases on my D: drive at D:\TB_Mail, and the basic TB! files
at C:\TheBat I installed V10 in the same C:\TheBat directory as the old one,
can I, once happy with V10, just delete the older files in there?

Thanks again.

I think the only option is in folder Properties > Additional > Keep messages in
base for (days).

But you may use a little trick. Create a virtual folder looking at you inbound.
In Advance filter settings select 'Date of reception if before Date' and the
virtual folder, once refreshed, will display the messages you want to delete.
It should work.

If you look in the account log for your gmail address , you will see "username
and password not accepted" Note "not accepted". That is different from
"invalid" or "not valid".

Unless you actually need to send mail from a gmail address, just forward
everything that arrives at your gmail address to an e-mail address on another
domain. www.gmail.com. Settings, Forwarding and POP

I got it! E stands for Encrypted, right? My error was that I didn't rename
them as Messages.EBB/EBN.

It works. Messages with no body still have some header fields visible in the
header list, good.

Maybe Message/View source (F9) should work for no body messages too? It
doesn't, at the moment.

Is there a reason why Message/Copy to folder... doesn't work even when body is
available?

What I really miss since ever is drag and drop of whole folders between
different accounts. Migrating a folder tree to a different account with TB has
always been a pain in the ass.

Thank you.

I tried something like that, but database files in my IMAP account have
extensions .EBB and .EBN. How should I handle them?

Yeah, if connection with the server cannot be established, you need to operate
manually - it is possible copy .TBB and .TBN files of an IMAP
folder as Message.TBB and Messages.TBN of a local folder - they have the same
format. The only problem that could occur is absence of downloaded message body
or attachments...

I sent a separate "redirect" to you so that you could see exactly what I see.
You'll notice that the image filenames tabs do have .jpg extensions. The
previous attachment was a screenshot (of a different email) of what I saw and
you were correct, the first two image filenames did not have extensions yet all
three of the images would appear in a redirect.

That was certainly your original problem for not seeing pictures as
attachments when forwarding. The forwarded message is attached as a
.eml, and no more attachments, but also the text in the editor window
id displayed as per your forward template. This is what I think led
you to think pictures were not being attached.

Maybe I'm just too old to be using a client as powerful as TB!

Rather than wait for something to come in so I could forward it to you, I took
an image from my phone and sent it to myself. Then I looked at both forwarding
and redirecting to see which would include the picture. Only redirecting would
include the picture. Then I went into account properties and looked at the
forward template. I noticed the "Forward messages as attachments (MIME
Standard)" was ticked. I un-ticked it and tried to forward the message again.
This time the picture was included in the forward.

I AM too old to be using a client as powerful as TB!

But not too old to thank you once again for helping.

Version 10 works, but you have to jump through some hoops with a web browser
when you first add a gmail address to The Bat.
Unless you actually need to send from a gmail address, you can fix retrieval of
mail at www.gmail.com and forwarding everything (and delete from Google servers
afterwards) to an e-mail address on a domain that doesn't break every e-mail
client on the planet.

The 50% discount is nice but does me no good, since I have version 9.5.1, but
purchased it BEFORE the date for which one may receive a free upgrade to The
Bat. So, the question remains, what is the oldest version of The Bat that will
support the new protocol, and will even the newest version support it?

I have no idea why your attachments aren't forwarded. All I can do is
volunteer to investigate. When you run into that problem again with a
new email, if you don't mind, please forward it to me by PM, as a MIME
attachment (remember the option in the FWD template), so it will

Well, that makes sense. I can easily see what you're talking about. But it still
doesn't answer the question of why attachments aren't forwarded with the email.
If the screenshot comes through, you can see how my FORWARD template is set up
(never having been modified since TB! was installed). I don't see anything that
would affect attachments.

Hello Jack,

That is not your problem. If you tick that box what will happen is
that any message that you want to forward will be included as an .eml
MIME attachment, and the text of the message (the one you are creating,
will depend on your Forward template for the account or folder you are
selecting. If you untick that box, there will be no .eml attachment,
just the text created by your template.

Now, in your first message you were asking about the difference
between Forward and Redirect, right?

- Forward opens an Editor window with contents that depends on your
Forward template; and you can add, delete or correct/change any text
before sending.

- Redirect opens a kind of Editor window with exactly the message you
are redirecting, there is no template option for Redirect, and you
cannot delete or edit or add any part of the message, just include the new To
address where you want to redirect the message.

More or less ;-)

My settings appear to be the same as yours. The only difference appears to be
how that last is worded. Mine says "Forward messages as attachments (MIME
standard)" and it was NOT ticked.

I use the "Forward" icon nestled between the "Reply" and "Redirect" icons at the
top of my screen to initiate a "Forward". I'm going to try it with that box
ticked as soon as I find a good specimen to forward.

BTW, your cut mark is missing a space at the end.

My settings:

Account / Properties / Templates / Forward: [ ] Forward as MIME is *not* ticked.

I use the arrow button to forward rather than the menu item.
