Frontier adds support for Apple AirPlay, Google Assistant to its SmartSDK

Thursday 11 January, 2018

The company will be previewing the implementation at this year's CES.

The Frontier SmartSDK is a flexible multi-ecosystem software solution, which
supports the latest audio technologies, including AirPlay 2 and Google
Assistant.

Together with Frontier's Minuet hardware platform, AirPlay 2 enables third
party brands and manufacturers to develop smart audio products quickly and
cost-effectively.

AirPlay 2 introduces multi-room audio playback from iOS devices to enabled
speakers with a simple tap or by asking Siri. AirPlay 2 also offers a superior
user experience with latency reductions and responsiveness improvements; it
also provides a higher level of buffering, which allows audio to keep playing
if users temporarily move out of Wi-Fi range.

Frontier's SmartSDK with Google Assistant will be available to customers in the
first half of 2018 and is previewed at CES on a number of new audio products
from major brands including Klipsch.

Anthony Sethill, CEO, Frontier Smart Technologies, said:

"We are excited to bring AirPlay 2 support to Frontier's SmartSDK. For third
party brands, this functionality will allow speakers to be seamlessly
controlled from an iPhone or iPad using the Apple Music or Podcasts apps, by
asking Siri, and in third party apps which support AirPlay. This will be an
important differentiator in the increasingly competitive Smart Audio space.

"The addition of the Google Assistant to Frontier's SmartSDK is an important
step forward for our business and our customers. "

Hi!
Those of us who use our JAWS license on multiple computers may have encountered
a situation where our authorisation needs to be reset.
If you live in the US then the reset of your Authorisation - computer count for
your license - is extremely easy, just jump onto the Activation web page,
choose reset your authorisation, type in the information and press the reset
button however those outside the US face another layer to work with, that being
the contacting of your local dealer to initiate a Authorisation Reset.
So why haven’t people outside the US got the access to the automated
Authorisation Reset that US customers have? We did - after all - buy JAWS just
the same.
Well actually those outside the US can access the automated Authorisation Reset
using a VPN, I found this out for myself a few days ago when I needed to reset
my JAWS authorisation and I decided to give the VPN trick a go having held on
to speak to someone at Freedom Scientific’s Technical Support line for just
under half an hour, I have no objection to waiting mind you but I thought that
- if I could use the Automated system - then I could save a whole heap of time.
Anyway that’s how its done, for the moment at least .

This App is a great way to order delivery of takeaway food to your home and its
fully accessible.
I used the App earlier this week to order from one of my favourite local
restaurants in my area.
You can browse the menu of the restaurant and select what you want, as you
select the items are aded to your cart and the total of your cart is displayed
near the top of the screen.
When you’ve finished selecting from the menu, double-tap on the Cart icon near
the top of the screen to enter the checkout order process.
>From here you confirm your address - this is already on file if you’ve created
>an Eat Now account -, select delivery time, add notes about any food allergies
>you may have and finally pay for your item using your favourite payment method
>- Paypal is accepted -.
I ordered my delivery for “Around 8 PM”, it arrived at 20 past but nevertheless
it made a nice change to open the door and have my order of takeaway handed to
me and me not needing to do anything else but to say “Thanks!”, close the door
and sit down to eat.

Hi!

I'm hoping for accurate information on this.

I'm looking at setting my Late 2012 Mac Mini as a server machine and thus am
thinking of using some old Firewire drives I have here as part of it.

I'm told that I'll have to install an earlier OS than Sierra given that
- acording to what I've heard - Sierra no longer comes with Firewire drivers
nor Firewire support.

I have to be honest in saying that I find this rather odd so some confirmation
of the status quo would be much appreciated.

Subject: [Techno-Chat]: Phone backups was Apple's iOS11

Hi!

On the subject of IOS devices, is there any way of a total backup of an IOS
device and a total restore should anything go wrong?

I don't use my IOS device that much which - in any case isn't all that
spectacular in the IOS workd -, my device is an iPhone 6 and I've been offered
better numerous times but the iPhone 6 will have to do me as all other models
of IOS devices don't fit my Arcam Portable DAC but I'm waffling again.

I ask the question regarding backup from a curious point of view more than
anything else.

By default Android devices only backup certain aspects such as contacts and
other related data it seems.

I have however just encountered one exception to this backup rule and that's my
new Sony xPeria X-Performance phone which offers a range of complete backup and
restore options on the phone.

For example you can backup all the contents of the phone to the Cloud or
- if you'd prefer - you can select another backup target such as an inserted SD
card, a USB stick or backup to your PC or Mac with the Xperia backup/restore
utilities available for download from the xPeria web site.

These utilities are perfectly accessible given that they use a HTML Interface.

So what happens when you restore a backup? Well I can trufully say that you'll
be put back at the point where your phone was when the last backup was made,
truly and absolutely.

I've tried this myself so I know exactly what I'm talking about.

I reset my phone and - after completing the setup process for the phone again -
I restored a backup made from the PC and congratulations!
everything I had on the phone - including speech settings etc- was on the
device exactly as I left it when the device was backed up.

I'm since repeated the procedure installing from a SD card and the Cloud, with
the same results.

Subject: [Techno-Chat]: The Bradley "Touch & See" Timepiece

Good Tuesday/Wednesday to you one and all.

I’ve had a new wrist watch now for a couple of months, and thought I’d just
talk a little about it here as it’s a very interesting device.

Available in either Titanium or Stainless Steel, the Bradley “Touch & See”
watch is a reminder to me that just sometimes, somebody who loses their vision
can inspire new ways of doing things.

The watch throws out the traditional concept of the big hand and the little
hand. Instead, it uses ball-bearings which move around the face of the watch
using magnetism as the sole driving force. The front face of the watch does not
have a glass or plastic cover of any kind. Instead, the tactile markers are
visible at all times. These watches also don’t use Braille markers. Instead, it
employs different shapes to notate the four major positions on the clock face,
and the in-betweenees are just short lines.

At twelve O’Clock, there is a large triangular shaped marker. The numbers one
and two are marked with short diagonal lines. The number three has a
double-length line at 90 degrees to the twelve-O’clock marker. so it goes on
throughout the rest of the clock face.

Now, here’s the unusual and very clever idea. There is a single ball-baring
which rotates around the top surface, in place of the traditional pointer. This
is the minute hand or, the big pointer. The hours are indicated by a second
ball-bearing which rotates around the outer edge of the watch, just above what
you’d think of as the winding control. The watch’s face is separated by a gap
of about 1 sixteenth of an inch, just under a millimetre, gap between the main
part of the watch and the platter which forms the clock face. And it is within
this gap that the hour marker ball-bearing travels around the clock.

When I demonstrate this device to others, I’m always asked:
“What happens if you accidentally move the ball-bearing with your finger as you
touch it?”

This is, of course, a very valid question and in many cases you do actually
find that you’ve moved it. However, this is where the sheer simplicity of the
device’s fundamental design works in your favour. If you think that you may
have moved one of the ball-bearings, or even if you think you’ve moved both of
them, the simple solution is to give your wrist a little shake. This causes the
ball-bearings to re-align themselves with the position of the magnet. The
strongest magnet is always, of course, facing to twelve-O’Clock. Using this
fundamental aspect of physics, it possible to accurately align the all-airings
to precisely the correct time no matter what you think you may have done to
dislodge them.

Another question I have been asked several times is “What happens when you need
to change the time to reflect daylight saving time?”. “Simple,” is always my
reply. You just gently click out the time adjustment crown on the watch, and
rotate it clockwise until you have the correct time. Then, you just click the
control back into normal mode, and you’re done.”

The watch uses a standard digital device battery, which any qualified jeweller
is able to replace for you. However, because the moving parts in this device
are so small, the battery should last between 5 and 10 years.

Yes, this watch is quite a costly one to buy. However, I consider it very well
worth what I paid for it. This device is, I am proud to say, another example of
a British company coming up with a terrific device based on the forces of
nature.

The only things you need to be careful of are that, although the timepiece will
withstand gentle splashes of water, akin to those it may receive when the
wearer is washing their hands, it is in no way waterproof and should,
therefore, be treated with respect when it comes to close proximity to water.

And finally, the face of the device is not scratch-resistant. Severe scratches
can impede the device’s functions drastically. Care should, therefore, be taken
not to allow this to come about.

The watch comes in two editions. The first, and slightly cheaper of the two, is
housed in a Titanium outer case, and comes supplied with a lack canvas strap
with leather interior. The second edition comes housed in a stainless steel

Dear Iaen,

When I produced that material, it was starting from the perspective of what
is a weatherstation.

Depending upon where you are with this topic, my suggestion would be for you
to contact a dealer of the Davis weatherstations to discuss exactly what you
might have in mind, what you want to obtain from any such unit and how that
can be achieved.

Setting up the equipment is important and this depends upon what type of
system you have in mind.

I don't know where you reside so not quite sure how to best help from here.

Best wishes,

Roger.

Dear Iaen,

For the last few years, I think around ten, I have been running one of these
made by Davis Instruments.

A few years ago I did a feature for Gordon for Sparkle Radio which may be of
interest, given Gordon is happy for me to share it with you, or he himself
might wish to pass it in your direction should this be of interest.

Best wishes,

point.
This arrangement seems to work very well though speed it limited to
600MBPS.
I’m thinking of using some power line LAN adapters in place of the Wi-Fi
arrangement as described above, TP-Link are offering a Starter Pack of 2
Adapters which are supposed to have a maximum transmission speed over the power
line of 1.2GBPS.
So that’s all simple enough but I am a little concerned as to the
venerability of these things.
For example, suppose the owner of the property next door just so happened
to have some of these TP-Link adapters, could he easily gain access to my Home
Network or could the adapters on his property possibly conflict with those on
mine?

Hmm. will be interesting to see whether the new version is compatible with
other countries outside the U.S.
Perhaps I’ve miss-read something but the options described in what you’ve
posted sound remarkably similar to what is available already.
I myself have been meaning to order one - having set one up already I’m
impressed by the performance and functionality - however there’s the Google
Home coming and of course Apple TV will offer similar functionality however
that will be limited to the Apple TV box itself and not a separate unit.

Hi!
I know someone who bought one and he's extremely happy with it though
he had to do a little fiddling to have it work properly in Australia.
Even now the Echo still doesn't read phone numbers correctly - we have
8 digit phone numbers whereas the U.S. have 7 digit phone numbers. -
Part of getting the Echo working correctly was to set it to a location
with the same time zone as Australia, Guam was the obvious choice here.
Then the problem arose of getting the App from the IOS App store, the
Echo App isn't available in Australia so a workaround had to be put into place.
I don't recall all of what had to be done now as it was some time ago -
I actually posted all the steps required to techno-chat at the time - but now
my friend can sign into his account on the web and control the echo from there
- well most of it -.
As was written in the original mail, there are 3 different echos
available right now and a review of each model was in Access World a couple of
months ago, turns out the original echo is by far the best one to buy and -
from the demos I've heard - I'd be pretty happy with that too.
Amazon does have competition from the Google Home device, the Google
Home was demonstrated on the BBC Radio 4 Today show a month or so back, I
actually heard the demo live, Google is to launch the Home soon.
If you'd rather get ahead of the Home and the Echo - and you have an
Android phone - then you can either try the Google Allo App or - if you'd
rather your Android device be shiny and new with all the features of Amazon
Echo and Google Home Built-in - buy a Google Pixel smartphone.

tonight I placed an order for one. It isn’t just a speaker that you can listen

the first step along the way towards a “Smart” home; read on:

Amazon's voice-activated smart home speaker is undeniably futuristic,
but it's also practical and accessible. With a rapidly growing slate of
features and integrations, it's easy to get excited about the Echo's potential.

THE BAD The Echo's sound quality is uneven at times, with weak bass
at high volumes. The growing list of "Skills" in the Alexa app could also
benefit from better organisation.

THE BOTTOM LINE More than a year after its debut, the Echo is smarter
than ever, and one of the best connected home products money can currently buy.

November 2014, Amazon has continued to refresh and expand its lineup of
hands-free, voice-enabled speakers. In April, the company introduced the Echo

updated version of the Dot, simultaneously cutting its price almost in half to
$50(US) or £50 (UK Sterling).

I think that we are making to much of this.

For example was the user of the note 7 charging the phone with a non approved
charger?

A bad cable?

Why are most of the issues happen in aircraft?

Maybe the charging points in the aircraft are faulty?

P.S. I do agree that Samsung don’t have the best of track records, just look
at the Samsung washing machines that catch on fire.

LG slams Samsung over exploding Note 7 phones

Talk about timing… News just hit that an airplane had to be evacuated when a
Samsung Galaxy Note 7 exploded and began smoking while aboard the aircraft.
Making matters even worse — much, much worse — is the news that the Note 7
device in question was apparently a “safe” model
  that
was manufactured recently and was issued to a customer as a replacement phone.
In other words, if this report pans out, not even Samsung’s new replacement
phones are safe to use. As if Samsung’s headache wasn’t bad enough, its
smartphone rival out of South Korea has been using Samsung’s misfortune to help
peddle its own phones.

DON’T MISS: iPhone 7 vs. Google Pixel: 7 ways Google’s new smartphones outshine
Apple

LG has been battling its Korean rival in the smartphone market for years, often
to no avail. The company does manage to sell several million handsets each
quarter, but it hasn’t yet figured out how to consistently make a meaningful
profit by selling phones. While many industry watchers believe Apple will be
the biggest beneficiary from Samsung’s Galaxy Note 7 debacle as consumers opt
for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus instead of Samsung’s potentially dangerous
Note 7, LG wants in on the action, too.

According to

NDTV, LG has been sending out marketing texts in India advising consumers to
avoid Samsung’s “exploding products” and buy an LG phone instead. The messages,
which are reportedly being sent to wireless subscribers all over the country,
assure users that LG’s products are thoroughly tested in order to ensure
people’s safety.

“Heard the news of exploding products? At LG, our products go through multiple
tests to ensure safety of our most valuable asset – YOU,” the marketing SMS
from LG reads. “Have a safe Diwali with LG.”

I think LG has something similar if I recall though I don’t think the idea
was as extensive as that foressen by the Google project.

Hi!

I'm working on my iPhone at the moment installing and uninstalling Apps.

It's amazing what you get used to when using an Android device and what you
then find sadly missing on other devices such as IOS defectives.

For example I'm very used to the idea of installing or uninstalling Apps and
then restarting an Android device - rebooting if you like - from the screen
that's presented when the power button is held down, I start using my iPhone
only to find that the restart option is lacking so I have to go through the
whole shutdown feature, turn the phone on again and wait for the phone to
restart, it's all very time consuming so I sincerely hope that Apple will
add a few options to the "Power Off" screen in the new version of IOS,
options such as Restart, perhaps Airplane Mode, Emergency Calls etc, I don't
think this is too much to ask.

Yes, I know about the emergency reboot function of IOS but that's not really
want a what .

I use Thunderbird email client and there are excellent tutorials/podcasts

easy to use.

I’m considering whether to leave Thunderbird behind and Migrate to Outlook
