Hi Roger

My apologies for the delay in responding to you here. Things have been really
hectic lately.

Yes, indeed, it is a shame that they’ve increased the prices. But having had
one on loan for the last couple of months, I can recommend the Orbit as an
alternative option for those on a low budget. There are, of course, always
drawbacks wen one pays for the cheapest option. For instance, the Orbit Reader
20 has no routing keys, so it’s difficult to put the cursor on a precise spot.
One thing I have discovered which annoys me is that if you’re reading
something, and a Bluetooth® connection is established with a regular device
using the Orbit as a display, the mode jumps to Bluetooth® whether you want it
too or not.

In the next few years it will be interesting to see how developments take
place, it is a pity that there has been such a price increase of the Orbit
Reader and again this could place it beyond what some can afford to pay.

Best wishes,

Roger.

2019-10-24 Thread Roger Firman
Dear Gordon,

Further to your message, are you by chance referring to the Graphiti –
Interactive Tactile Graphic Display?

If so, I had a short look at a prototype earlier this year and felt they have
missed a trick. I have a memory that it works in straight lines, it certainly
did at that time. For me, I felt that if it worked on the basis that you could
display material in both straight lines or in a more flexible way, it would be
much more adaptable to a much greater range of needs.

I look forward with interest to your discoveries.

Best wishes,

Roger Firman.

Subject: Re: [Techno-Chat]: Clever Radios

Couple of points here.

You mentioned that this is a “Communications” receiver. The term
“Communications” receiver usually refers to a receiver whose function is aimed
primarily at the communications bands, be it amateur, PMR or logistical service
providers – each of which has, of course, its own frequency ranges and modes of
transmission.

You also said that “Short Wave” goes all the way up to 30 MHz. This is
technically not quite correct, as from around 3 MHz upwards isn’t usually
defined as “Short” way, and in excess of 20 MHz is definitely not covered by
this description. ;-)

Of course, I’m only splitting hairs here, so don’t take these as serious
contradictions.

My major correction, however, relates to the antennas. You specified that the
telescopic whip antenna provided is used for “FM”, and the Ferrite antenna is
used for “AM”. Technically, this is a grossly inaccurate phraseology, since the
differences between the antennas are actually the frequencies at which they are
resonant, and not the modes of emission which they are designed to best
receive. Again, I’m only speaking here very much tongue-in-cheek. All the same,
that last point is perfectly sound.

Seriously though, having a single portable solution capable of general coverage
from, I would presume, roundabout, presumably, the 100 KHz mark up to 30 MHz
certainly has its advantages. That much is beyond dispute.

I certainly wouldn’t draw comparisons to an RF scanner, of course, which is an
entirely different concept. And my final thought on this one for the moment Is
that, assuming this device covers the amateur bands and even some PMR bands, it
would be an advantage to have either SSB support, some form of RIT control or,
preferably, both. This would have a few advantages when listening in the lower
frequency bands, (100 KHz to 30 MHz in particular).

One thing I’m not quite clear on, however, is where the gaps are. You say that
the device supports FM. So, presumably, you’re referring to the 88/108 MHz
broadcast band. This would seem to be the case as you refer to stereo FM in
your post. Also you say that there’s a telescopic whip for that kind of use. So
what are the limits on listening in the VHF range?

As we’ve discussed privately of late, Air band and, to a lesser extent, the
marine bands I find interesting. PMR also has its attractions in some cases.

Subject: [Techno-Chat]: More on Denon Heos

Hi!
I’ve written to the list about various Denon Heos streaming/multi room products
I have ranging from the Denon Surround-Sound receiver in the lounge, the stereo
speaker in my den and the weatherproof portables.
2 weeks ago I took delivery of the most advanced Heos product I’ve used in the
form of the Denon Heos Super Link, actually perhaps I’d best describe the Heos
Super Link as being the most advanced and versatile audio product I’ve ever
used.
The Super Link is very non descript looking like a typical rack mount component
such as a Musical Synthesiser or radio tuner, the rack out ears can be removed.
There’s nothing on the front of the Super Link itself apart from a button with
markings around it which I take to be a sleep button on some kind though I’ve
never had any reason to use it.
The lack of controls is due to the fact that all controls for the Super Link
and other Heos equipment are found in the Heos App itself which runs under IOS
or Android, take your pick.
The Heos Super Link from Denon is designed to work with a variety of equipment,
everything from Power Amplifiers to Digital to Analogue Converters, whatever
your audio distribution or audio input/output switching dream then the Super
Link can probably handle it and on top of that stream it!
The Super Link is divided into 4 zones - 4 completely separate output devices
if you like - and they can be configured completely independently of each other
even down to the IP address and name.
Using the Heos link you can switch between the zones or stream directly to them
using DLNA compatible Apps.
Each zone has a serious of outputs including Optical/coxial digital and
analogue RCA jacks.
The Analogue outputs can be configured as fixed level - for feeding into
line-in - or variable - for feeding to power amplifiers -.
Each zone has a graphic EQ to match the sound even further.
If that’s not enough the stereo outputs can be combined to produce dual mono
outputs.
The outputs can be set to drive sub-woofer units and have a complete bypass
filter setup.
Remote control compatibility is catered for with each zone with a trigger out
facility which can be used to turn on a power amplifier or similar when it is
required.
Added to this each zone has its own USB port so you have the ability through
the Super Link to connect 4 separate USB memory sticks filled with your
favourite music in your favourite formats whether that be HD audio, MP3 or
anything else.
So that’s the outputs and then come the inputs, 4 sets of stereo Analogue
Line-In jacks along with 2 Optical and 2 Coxial cable digital inputs, all of
which can be switched amongst the output zones or switched to other Heos
equipment on your network.
For example, I have one of my Digital tuners fed into Cox Input Digital 1 of
the Heos Super Link, I can switch the input to any of the 4 zones of the Super
Link or switch the input to the Surround-Sound system in the lounge, the Denon
Heos 7 speaker in my Den, the portable speakers outside etc.
Let your imagination Rome over the possibilities that streaming to and from the
Heos Super link brings, sending your cable Set Top box from the Surround-Sound
to one of the zones of your Super link, sending the USB Memory sticks contents
to the Portables in the barbecue area, pairing a guests Bluetooth phone with
the Heos speaker in the party room and streaming the guests music collection
to your study for your private enjoyment, what absolute fun!
Given the quality of the Heos Super Link it doesn’t come cheap at Australian
$1800 but boy, you really get a good bang for your buck.
There are quite a few Heos products in the range now, the Heos 1 are the
portable speakers I briefly spoke of, they can be paired into stereo pairs or
you can use as individual speakers. The Heos 1 can also be fitted with a Heos
Go rechargeable battery pack.
The Heos 3 is a bigger version of the Heos 1 designed to be run indoors. The
Heos 3 can be used as rear or centre speakers in a Heos Surround-Sound
environment if you like, they also make excellent main audio speakers.
The Heos 5 is a self contained stereo powered speaker unit as is the Heos 7,
the 7 is meant for larger roos whilst the 5 for smaller.
I’ve already mentioned the Heos Super link but there’s another smaller Brother
in the Kink range, the link itself which is only a 1 zone product as compared
to the 4 offered by the Super Link.
The heos Amp is a self-contained Hi-Fi amplifier complete with all Heos has to
offerer, the idea of this amp is that you connect to the Hi-Fi components and
the speakers of your choice whilst having all the benefits of Heos connectivity
at your fingertips.
I beleive that several Heos sub-woofer units are also available.

Hello Roger

Yes, there are ways to migrate Windows from one PC to another. There are quite
a few applications out there whose function is to “Clone” either the contents
of a hard drive, or else clone the drive’s layout on a sector-by-sector basis.
The only proviso being that the “Target” drive must be at least the same
capacity of the “Source” drive.

There are a variety of ways you can accomplish the task. Obviously, the easiest
would be to use an application such as the Terabyte suite. All you’d then do is
use an external USB drive for your “Backup” of the original system. Then, use
the same external drive to “Restore” on the destination system. Obviously this
would involve booting from an external third drive, but TeraByte and other
utilities can help you create the boot media.

Actually, it occurs to me as I write that the Paragon software suite may be
more appropriate for this purpose. It would probably make the job simpler to
accomplish.

But in essence, Roger, the answer to your question is, quite definitely,
“Yes!”. You can indeed do this with Windows 10. Older versions of Windows were
much more fussy about this kind of thing, due to the activation processes which
Microsoft used on those versions. Much has changed, however. And the tight
compliance requirements have been substantially relaxed.

But anyway, you should be able to find the information you need on one of the
search engines. I urge you to research this issue if you’re planning such a
move. What’s best for my circumstances may not be best for yours, and visa
versa.

Before I close, may I just remind the group that there is a dedicated Windows
list, running alongside the Techno-Chat group. It’s name is, predictably:

windows-acc...@windows-access.net <mailto:windows-acc...@windows-access.net> .

from experience just how troublesome those occasions where something gos
disastrously wrong and your computer is left US as a consequence. If I can
avoid it, despite the fact that Windows now has an accessible restore process,
I have every intention of preserving my working system now, whilst it’s good to
go. I have invested significantly in terms of both the operating system and
associated software, plus the man-hours it has taken to build the system up to
its current working status. I can assure you, I have absolutely no intention of
repeating the laborious and intensely frustrating task of building this thing
up again from scratch!

If only, if only, it were possible to do things as simply as it is in MacOS.
Although I do not wish to create a debate about which system is superior. That
is entirely down to the individual or entity responsible for the device. But, I
digress.

Having had only the opportunity to play briefly with the software since I
installed it on Sunday, it would appear that much has changed since I
originally bought a license for the product. Since that time, there has been an
upgrade charge for access to the current version. However, I don’t begrudge
that in the slightest, given how much more powerful this product now is. The
cost of the upgrade was minimal, so I opted to pay it without question, and I
regard it as an investment. Believe me, if it saves me the countless hours of
work, and all the frustrations of a total reinstall, then I consider the
upgrade fee to be a most worthwhile investment.

Getting back to the product itself. The options presented even in the Windows
shell context menus appear to put lots of control at your fingertips. Although
it is true to say that, if you’re prepared to spend the time required to learn
the interface, the command-line version is, as the developer states on their
website, more powerful than the GUI interface. However, one thing at a time.
Possibly though, the command-line, (text-only) version is the way to go for a
full system restore.

I do like the fact that, if you configure it as such, your every change to the
hard drive is shadowed in a contiguous backup. It sort of puts me in mind of
Data Horizon Systems RollBack RX Professional, but this seems to be a

RE: [Techno-Chat]: How To Reset Windows Local Account Password

2018-05-30 Thread Roger Firman
Dear Gordon,

Many thanks for your reply.

I expect you have come across alternative approaches where the user has to fill
something in as an answer to a question which gets rid of the audio challenge,
many of which can be very hard to hear.

I hope you find a workable alternative solution.

Kind regards,

Roger.

Hello Roger

To be honest, I don’t think most people realise just how much work does get
done to try and stay ahead of the game, or, at the very least, keep pace with
it! Yes, Spam, Ham and other junk are the curse of my life. I spend a lot of
time every day amending filters, blacklisting sites and IP addresses, and so it
goes on. It’s actually become so bad that I have had to configure a “Friends”
system. In theory, it should mean that unless I either initiate an E-Mail to an
external third party, or unless I, or one of those for whom I provide mail
accounts, initiates an entry into their white list, an external sender who is
unknown is supposed to receive a “Friends” challenge. Unfortunately, that means
interacting visually with one of those images which cause us so many issues.
However, I have worked around that to a degree by adding a few sentences to the
outgoing message which unknown senders receive. Basically I invite them to
write to my iCloud address and alert me to the fact that they are blind.
Although I haven’t said exactly that in my message. All it says is “If you
can’t deal with the images”, but that’s what it means. Yes, I realise that is a
very clunky way of doing things. But, unfortunately, I really didn’t have
another workable alternative.

I am in discussions with the server developers to see if we can’t do as so many
sites do these days, offer an audio alternative. That would permit me to
tighten things up considerably, and would make the Friends system far more
reliable.

Subject: [Techno-Chat]: De Taj

Good Friday to you one and all!

This, as they say, is De Taj, (The Day).

Earlier in the week, I informed the group that there would be some power
disruption throughout the week, caused by new wiring being installed as a part
of having my bathroom turned into a “wet room”. The vast majority of the work
is now done, and the room is like an alien landscape to me at the moment.
Although it comes with all the best fixtures and fittings, needless to say. For
what it’s costing me, it’d bloody well better!

Anyway, to get back to the point. Today is the day that the majority of the
disruption to my energy services will occur. The wiring is all in place, it now
just needs to be connected to the pain power supplies and all of the testing
needs to be done just to complete the legal niceties.

Over here in the UK, when work of this nature is undertaken, a certified
electrician and a certified gas engineer are mandatorily required to inspect
and test the new installation, in order that the energy companies can be
informed that the work has been carried out to meet our very high standards of
safety. That, as say, is scheduled to happen this morning. Then it’s just a
matter of fitting the wash basin and a couple of other fixtures and fitting,
then the work is complete.

Why am I telling you this, you may wonder. Well, fair question, as it does not
relate to list topics. I’m simply trying to ensure that those who need to know
are aware that mail will go down probably around 09:00 BST, which is 08:00 UTC.
It will be down for an indefinite period throughout the morning, but will
definitely be restored by, I would estimate, mid afternoon at the very latest.

In the meantime, I apologise for any inconvenience. Be assured that this is
essential work, and must take precedence over everything else.

Subject: [Techno-Chat]: An Apology From The list Owner

Good Saturday to you one and all!

Now that the issue has been resolved, I would like to extend an apology to all
group members for its sudden vanishing off the face of the earth, late on
Wednesday. Its reappearance did not occur until Friday afternoooneving, (is
there such a word as Afternoonevening?). The problem was caused by a very rare
and difficult to diagnose technical issue on one of our servers. Without boring
you all with the full details, the server in question forgot, totally, about
where it was supposed to be, and what it was supposed to be doing. It seems to
have gone into an infinite loop of launching and application, crashing same,
launching, crashing, launching, crashing … you get the picture!

I am taking steps to try and ensure that this issue, rare though it may be,
does not recur. It took me a lot of hours of frustration, tearing what little
hair remains from my head, and then much cursing the day I ever met up with a
computer!

However, I eventually managed to track the problem down, but only after much
trawling through system logs, even putting apps into debug mode, then
studiously wading through the results. That was how I eventually came upon the
problem.

Once diagnosed, it was a two-minute quick-fix to get it back on its feet again.
In over 15 years of using this application, I have never, ever, encountered
this behaviour from it.

Anyway, we should now be back up and running, ready and willing to serve the
membership as before. However, since computers only respond to the data fed
into them, I guess I must assume the blame for the issue. The offending broken
file has now been replaced, and the app seems perfectly content again. Perhaps
there really is some affinity between an upset computer and an upset woman! But
I’d better not go down that road any further or I’ll find myself in serious
strife!

Sorry folks, we’re fixed again now.

This is really odd. If I’m at the desktop or wherever, and insert Dot4+Dot7,

However, when I try this in an edit filled, such as the Skype or Outlook.

“Dot4 A L”. It isn’t an @ symbol that’s being entered. So I’m utterly confused.

Hi Roger

Yes, dots 4+7 does indeed work. The concept of using the Focus’s keyboard is
still quite a new one to me, and for whatever reason, I swear this didn’t work
yesterday when I tried it on Debbie’s suggestion. But it does now. In fact, I
am sure that yesterday I got the Asterisk symbol when I tried this. Not to
worry, it works now.

Incidentally I am probably going to get myself an ElBraille 40 when they hit
the streets at the end of September. I may, or may not, I haven’t yet decided,
get myself the new Focus 40 Braille display which has some very attractive
features. But that one will be next year I think. One needs to be careful here
because the Focus 40 Blue fifth generation is USB3.1C which isn’t compatible
with the current USB 2.0 Focus. The dock station that will hit the market in
September/October is USB2, the new model won’t be available, as I understand
it, until early 2018. But for me, the ElBraille 40 and ElBraille 14 will be a
fantastic solution to a lot of issues. Apart from the tablet motherboard on
which they are built being 32-bit, (which doesn’t exactly break my heart),
they’re a wonderful machine. In my specific case, if I need a BlueTooth Braille
display, one that’s just as portable as the Focus, I have a couple of options.
But the most portable one is the MiniSeika, which I have had for a long time
but not used much until now. Although it’s cheap and a bit clunky, it will
serve the purpose.

Anyway, I’m babbling.

Just about to set up E-Mail on my ElBraille, and it occurs to me that I can’t
remember how you insert the “@“ symbol. This kind of computer Braille is not
the same as other devices use, so it’s kind of thrown me a bit.

Hello Rogr

OK, I just did some checking and, as I thought, the Braille input and output
tables are both set to UEB in all applications. However, it appears that you
are quite correct, so the symbol is the same in UEB as it is in US grade 2.

I’m just confused though, I have my other Braille devices also set to UEB and
the @ symbol is quite different across the board.

So, what I now need to do is start using the Braille keyboard on my PC, where I
can test with NVDA and JAWS, to see whether those are also the same. It’s
another one of those odd-ball things that don’t quite add up.

However, many thanks for solving the puzzle for me, at least to the point where
I can now configure the ElBraille for E-Mail.

Hello everybody

I’ve stumbled upon an issue. To which I just cannot find the answer. I’ve
banged my head against so many walls that bits are starting to fall off it! So
now, I have to bug the group.

My password to log into Windows and my Microsoft account uses upper case
characters, lower case characters and digits. Using a Braille display’s
Perkins-style keyboard, how does one go about entering this combination of
characters at the Windows password prompt?

I have tried using computer Braille, no go. I’ve tried to use the usual U+Chord
command to indicate that I’m about to enter an upper case character. No go. I
obviously can’t use either literary grade 1/2 at this juncture, because in UEB
and the old-style British Braille, the dots 3, 4, 5 and 6 keystroke produces
different symbols.

Any suggestions very much appreciated.

RE: [Techno-Chat]: The Merits Of Braille Adaptive Devices

2017-06-29 Thread Roger Firman
Dear Gordon,

Regarding your query about the Orbit Reader 20 project, it is still active and
it was hoped that the device would by now be available. I know this is not the
case but believe it is at some stage of production.

As I understand it, the price for the UK has not yet been finalised, or if it
has, the information is not publicly available. It is likely to be higher than
originally stated but beyond that I do not know.

Best wishes,

Roger Firman.

Subject: [Techno-Chat]: The Merits Of Braille Adaptive Devices

I have re-routed this to the list because I think others may wish to contribute
to the discussion,

Personally speaking, I would never be without my displays. At first out of
necessity, then out of choice, I started working without speech for the most
part, just relying on Braille. And Braille is where NVDA is quite a bit weaker
than JAWS, This is especially true when using a Focus display. Rapid Reading
mode can be extraordinarily useful. But where I find Braille without speech
most useful is in a meeting or conference situation where the speech would be
both intrusive to others and debilitating to me. I like to be able to work
privately in meetings as I listen to what is being said by fellow attendees.
Some of the discussions can be quite involved, and note taking is essential for
me. I have to concentrate really hard because of my dual sensory impairments.
And speech just makes things doubly difficult.

So yes, Braille is, for me at least, a vital, absolutely vital tool. I use it
every single day of my life, and have used it professionally to both educate
and to enable me to perform my then job functions.

Does anybody know what became of the Orbit reader project? I haven’t seen any
mention of that since late 2015 so did they fail to produce? If so, what a
waste of all that money, and how disappointing will that be to the thousands of
blind and visually impaired users who, like most people, cannot possibly jump
on to the Braille display ladder for the simple reason that conventional
devices are way beyond their financial limits.

Dear Iaen,

When I produced that material, it was starting from the perspective of what
is a weatherstation.

Depending upon where you are with this topic, my suggestion would be for you
to contact a dealer of the Davis weatherstations to discuss exactly what you
might have in mind, what you want to obtain from any such unit and how that
can be achieved.

Setting up the equipment is important and this depends upon what type of
system you have in mind.

I don't know where you reside so not quite sure how to best help from here.

Hi!

Some of you may have seen this error message pop up when you've tried to start

The error is caused by Windows update disabling some .net Framework services

Subject: [Techno-Chat]: Hims International: Blaze ET – Progress Report

Hello everybody

As I reported to the group earlier, this morning I received my new Blaze ET.
I’ve been playing with it now for a little while, and it goes way, way above
that which is attainable on the rival HumanWare devices.

For one thing, the Web Radio channels are up-to-date, and they actually work!
However, as yet I haven’t managed to play any of the BBC national or local
radio channels. That isn’t to say it isn’t possible, I merely haven’t got
around to it as yet. I shall do so, rest assured.

Regarding settings of the hardware and software. Connecting to my custom
network was a total breeze! I just entered the relevant data into the
appropriate fields, and clicked connect. It just workedQ! With my Stream, I
have always had problems in this regard so I shall go and try that again
shortly, just to be fair, in case anything else has changed which made it
possible for the Blaze to function. It could be, as I recently reset my router
and started over.

Controlling the Blaze is also as easy as 1, 2, 3! i use that expression quite
deliberately. Most of the hardware consists of rows of three buttons, with the
exception of the keypad which is arranged in a traditional circle-style with
the small “OK”button residing in the centre. Without its case, the Blaze fits
snugly in the hand. It weighs in at just a little more than the Stream, and
aesthetically it is only a mere half a centimetre wider, and exactly the same
length. The “Guide” voices on the Blaze seem to use either the Ivona or Acapela
Group speech engine, so the quality is very acceptable. Changing language, time
zone, voice persona, pitch and speed was very simple. So it doesn’t take long
to find your way around.

In the box with the Blaze came a print and Braille quick start guide. However,
and this is my only real dislike about the whole product. Whoever transcribed
the quick start guide into Braille clearly doesn’t really know what they’re
doing. For whatever reason, the line spacing has been changed, and it’s only
around 0.75 of where it would ordinarily be. This close line spacing makes the
quick start guide very difficult to read, to be honest. or the life of me, I
just don’t get it! Why on earth anybody would want to tamper with those
settings is beyond me.

Fortunately, there is a documentation CD provided with the Blaze, which
contains the quick start guide and also the main user manual. To be fair, I
only spent a few short minutes looking at the Braille guide, just to check that
everything which should have been in the box was indeed present. I managed to
find my way around the device without the aid of a guide. if you’ve seen Hims
software design philosophy before, you probably won’t even need to touch the
user guide. As somebody who extensively uses a Braille Sense U2, I had a pretty
shrewd idea of how it worked before I even switched on the device and, sure
enough, I was not disappointed.

In terms of services available, the Blaze really lives up to its name. It goes
blazing ahead of the Stream, offering a diverse world of configuration options
which make it possible to configure the device just the way you like it.
Interestingly, the core operating system is Redhat LINUX, judging by the layout
and format of the flash disk. That’s certainly a step in the right direction,
seems that Hims too is on the point of ditching Windows Mobile.

I tried playing a DAISY book, and then recording one. It’s possible to record
in either plane wave or MP3 mode, or else have your recording marked up as a
very basic DAISY book. I don’t know how far Hims will take that, and what level
of navigation it will permit. But I suspect that at the moment at least, there
is only one level supported by native recordings in DAISY format.

I played a book which I created recently for a client which uses multi-level,
multi-heading navigation. I had no difficulty whatsoever with playing that book
on the Blaze, and navigation according to publisher’s parameters seems to work
fine.

Dear Gordon,

I look forward to reading thoughts of those with knowledge within this field.

So, what follows is no level of expertise, just thoughts.

I am tending to feel that a ceiling mounted approach may well be more
convenient that wall mounted. Were there to be any issues of dynamics, might it
be more uniform?

Again, as stated earlier, I look forward to reading informed views.

Best wishes,

Roger Firman.

Subject: [Techno-Chat]; Building My Own Audio Studio

Hello everybody

Now that I am the sole occupant of my own house, which I also own lock, stock
and barrel, I've decided to build myself a little studio, using the smallest
bedroom in the house which is idealy suited in term of proximity and layout.

However, I am throwing this one open for disaussion as I think there are some
in here whose inmut could be very useful.

I am tonying with the idea as using either cieling or wall-mounted microfone
holders. At our community studio, we do use these, and then work well because
the presenter can have the microphone at a conuenies'nt pmint, but not have it
in ow way when laying out a desk.

I'm wondering what this will do to the dynamics, however. Any such mor every is
a commitment So I want to get it right.

Hello everybody

Around three or four years ago I think it was, Roger very kindly produced quite
an indepth, and very informative article for the group and for our soon to be
revived radio station, Sparkle Radio, regarding weather stations.

At that time, I wasn't really in the market for such a thing. Now, however,
things have changed somewhat, and I'm looking with renewed interest at quite a
few things.

So, does anybody know whaj the current situation is regarding se things as
weather stations? Ideally, I'd like one which utilised the free-to-air weather
satellites, but I do remember reading that they are far less accessible than
their terrestrial countaparts. So it seems that we're going to be earthbound
for quite some time to come yen, at least as far as weather predictions which
don't come from the public networks are concerned. Nevertheless, any
information would be appreciated.

Subject: [Techno-Chat]; Reinstalling Windows 10 without a worry in the world

Hi!

Now that things have settled themselves down with my clean reinstall of Windows
10 I thought it may be of benefit to others for me to put pen to paper so to
speak and write about the experience I had over the last 9 days.

I used the Windows 10 media creation tool to create my installation media
though at the time I didn’t have a blank DVD ROM or a USB stick large enough to
take the ISO file the media Creation tool spat out but not to worry, I did have
my software still on my computer that was working and among st the installed
bits and pieces was an ISO mounter - the ability to mount an ISO file in such a
way that Windows 10 thinks its a virtual CD ROM drive - so after the ISO file
was mounted I found the setup App and ran it.

I then allowed the Windows Media Creation tool to update itself and check
whether my system was up to date.

I then followed the instructions telling the App exactly what I wanted to do, a
clean install with everything deleted.

>From the time the reinstall actually started I knew I’d have no speech so time
>to occupy myself in other ways for a couple of hours whilst I waited for the
>Desktop machine and the Windows install to do its thing, I like coffee very
>much so it made good sense to me to enjoy a cup in the sunshine in a nice
>comfortable chair in my backyard.

So back to the machine in just under two hours, I held down the windows key and
pressed enter and was most delighted to here Narrator speak, it seemed the
reinstall had gone smoothly so now? Well it was just a matter of following the
wizard to make those final settings and adjustments, even then I wasn’t at all
worried in the full knowledge that I could make further adjustments through
Windows settings later.

Next came the installation of NVDA which presented no problem whatever given I
had the latest NVDA build on a USB stick in my right hand front pocket of my
trousers.

So now to get my data back and most of this was in Dropbox.

I had some initial problems installing Dropbox as the installation wasn't as
accessible as I remember it being once upon a not so long ago but I managed in
the end to get Dropbox going and the data then started flowing through my
Network from other machines with Dropbox accounts onto my Desktop with the new
Windows installed on it.

The next important tool I found worthwhile at this point of the reinstall was
the Password Manager I use - 1 Password -. Once I had the 1 Password data on
my machine and had installed the 1 Password App I had all the important login
data I would need and other password information - including software licences
for Vipre Internet Security etc - at my fingertips.

1 Password is an App which manages data securely, everything from generated
Passwords to logins to drivers license to bank accounts and credit cards.

So There you have it, my thoughts on reinstalling Windows 10 and the key tools
I used to get the job done.

If the worst had come to the worst I had a backup of my working system before
the reinstall which I could have put onto the Desktop but thankfully I didn’t
need to take this cause of action.

Dane,

Perhaps distances and other factors make your speeds much slower than it is
possible to receive in the UK, depending upon provider and package.

Anyway, as long as you get what you require then that is the important matter.

My NBN Broad-Band connection went down on Thursday evening, a technician was
out early this morning and it took him less than 5 minutes to identify and fix
the problem.

I was the cause of the problem, I was making some wiring changes in the NBN
termination box when my arm caught in the thin Fibre Optic cable, i moved my
arm and of course the cable snapped so that was that and again, an annoyance
that I couldn’t see what was about to happen .

Anyway I only mention this because during the down time of the NBN I obviously
had to rely on my 4G mobile data service which I used mainly with my Samsung
Galaxy S6 and the personal Hotspot connected to either the Mac or the Windows
PC but mainly the as the data transfer rate was a lot faster than with the PC
and I’ll explain more about that in a few seconds.

Actually the data rate itself was far faster than I get with the NBN, with the
NBN its about 2.5MB down and 500K up but with the 4G data - using the PC - it
was around 3.5MB up and about the same down.

However on the MAC the data speed changed dramatically and this was absolutely
astounding, 35MB down and 5MB up. So why the big speed difference between
Windows PC and Mac? Well I can’t confirm this definitely but I suspect that the
Wi-Fi dongle I was using on the PC to connect to the Samsung was slowing things
down due to the fact that it is a USB device and connected to a USB 2.0 port
whereas with the Mac Mini I was using its own built-in Wi-Fi connection and I
suspect things may have even been faster had the Wi-Fi connection from the Mac
been the latest AAC standard.

so what of all this? Well nothing really only to say that if you’re not using a
huge amount of data then you’d possibly be much better off getting a good 4G
plan with your phone carrier rather than having a broad-Band service installed
in your home.

Ah Roger that was helpful and I've been able to work out how it all works.

First you have to set the view to recent messages and Skype will tell you if a
voice message exists, press enter on that recent conversation and you'll see
the play voicemail button if you tab around a bit.

Yep, a little experimenting is required but you'l lget the hang of it I'm sure.

Messages that you haven’t listened to yet have an orange dot next to them.

I had to buy another and noticed the HD version is at the same price now as I

I'm wondering, for HD mode to work will I need a USB 3.0 port given the extra

Eitehr way I'll be able to handle it.

[Techno-Chat]; ScannaR

2015-02-23 Thread Roger Firman
Hello,

While appreciating this is not current or the latest technology, I'm hoping
that someone may be able to make a useful suggestion.

I've recently been given a ScannaR stand-alone reading machine.
Unfortunately, it main purpose of scanning text and automatically reading it
isn't working and I'm wondering whether this is a software or hardware
issue.

As far as I can tell, the other functions look to be working as expected but
not the actual scanning operation.

I'm told the light is working on the scannaR and it seems to make the right
kind os sounds I would expect a scanner to make.

Having contacted Humanware this morning they don't seem able to offer
anything.

The equipment seems to date back to 200 or 2004. I know there were a few
models of this piece of equipment but I don't know which it is. It does have
a USB connection on the back and mention is made of Windows 2000
Professional software being used.

I do accept that the conclusion may well be that there is nothing that can
be done, however, I wanted to explore options before arriving at that point.

Best wishes,

Roger.

Hello,

I've just read the message from Lynne about Cloud and Private e-mail

Regardless of which approach one might prefer, there are clearly issues with

If based across the Atlantic, then, as I understand it, information is

may not be a concern to some, however, if one is going to want to write

where your messages are stored and how they might be accessed.

Hi Dane

Yes, but you're talking here about radio channels. That isn't what
we're looking for. Yes, we too have a premium Sky.fm subscription but
when it expires we probably won't be renewing it because to be honest
our needs have changed and we don't use it much now, if ever. The
Squeezebox is largely redundant now because we find that Smooth Radio
gives us what we need for radio listening and we don't spend much time
listening to radio. All of us have our work interests and we joust
don't get the time for radio listening. Personally, I much prefer
making radio to listening to it. I'm having lots of fun with Sparkle
Radio even if it isn't appealing to others. I'm somewhat disappointed
by the lack of interest on the part of those who promised to assist with
the project when it launched, but they have a perfect right to change
their minds, as it would appear they have. But no worries. I recently
bought an amazing new analog/digital mixer come FX processor come
external sound device for a computer, Windows and Mac. But I'll talk
about that on a different thread. Our need for music is far different
than it would appear yours is.

RE: HumanWare BrailleNote, Anybody Using One?

2013-05-27 Thread Roger Firman
Hi Gordon,

I've just found the following information from the user manual which may
be of help.

While I don't have the device in question, I hope what follows will be
of some assistance.

Regards,

Roger.

Creating a new Wireless Configuration.
When you have a wireless connection available to you on a regular basis,
you should set up a dedicated configuration for it. It may be, for
example, on your college campus or in your workplace. All wireless
networks have an SSID (Service Set Identifier). The SSID is just the
name given to the network. For added security, networks not intended for
access by the general public may hide their SSID, so it cannot be
displayed when you scan for visible networks. In this case, the network
administrator needs to tell you what the SSID for the network is, and
any other applicable settings such as WEP.
To create a connection configuration for a wireless connection, go to
the Wireless Network option of the connectivity Menu.
1. Go to the Options Menu by pressing SPACE with O, select Connectivity
by pressing C, then Wireless Ethernet, by pressing W.
2. KeySoft prompts, Wireless internet on? Currently Yes. Press Y for
Yes.
3. You are at the Wireless Ethernet Menu. Select
Configure a New Wireless Connection and press ENTER. KeySoft presents
you with the Entry List for Connection configuration. You can move down
the list by pressing SPACE.
4. The first item is Name. Enter any name you like, something that is
meaningful to you, and press ENTER.
5. KeySoft prompts, SSID? This is the name of the network as
determined by the network administrator. Type in the SSID and press
ENTER.
6. Next is Use Infrastructure Mode? which requires a Y or N value. The
values you need to assign will be given to you by the network
administrator.
7. Next is Security Protocol. Select the security protocol you want to
use (WEP, WPAPSK, WPA2PSK). If you want to use WPAEnterprise or
WPA2Enterprise, select WPA or WPA2. You can also select Open if you
don't want any security at all, however, this option is not recommended.

8. Next is WEPkey entry field. Enter the WEPkey and press ENTER.
Note that the WEPkey will be in hexadecimal format and either 10
characters long, for a 64 bit encryption or 26 characters long for a 128
bit encryption. If instead of WEP, you select WPAPSK, you will need to
fill out information on your Pre shared key (PSK).
9. Next, for Enterprise configurations, is 802.1x Authentication. This
will be either 0 for no authentication, 1 for TLS, or 2 for PEAP, or 3
for MD5 Challenge or 4 for MsCHAPv2. Type in the appropriate value and
press ENTER. If you don't know what this is, you probably don't need it.

10. The rest of the fields are standard network settings and again, the
values will come from the network administrator. The fields are:
Obtain an IP Address Automatically?, IP Address, Subnet Mask, Def
ault Gateway, Primary DNS, Secondary DNS, Primary WINS, and
Secondary WINS. Any fields that don't need changing, just pass over
them by pressing SPACE.
11. KeySoft prompts, Use a proxy server for this connection? If N for
No, you will go to the end of the list. If Y for Yes, you will need to
fill in two more fields proxy server name and proxy server port.
12. To save and close the record, press SPACE with E. KeySoft prompts,
Add this Record? Press Y for Yes or N for No.

2013-05-27 Thread Roger Firman
Hi Gordon,

Thanks for your message.

I did somehow think you may well have already gone down that road but
thought it just might be of help.

Two more thoughts come to mind.

1. Do you have a way of trying to connect the device to a public
available network which you know is working with the object of
establishing if the Apex will work or not? At least that just might show
if the device is working or if there is a fault.

2. Might it be worth contacting the support facility of Humanware, I'm
thinking of the US part of the operation which is probably open today?

Regards,

Roger.

RE: Sparkle Radio Website

2013-01-25 Thread Roger Firman
Hello Lynne,

All kinds of interesting things are clearly going on.

I am musing as to whether a feature about weatherstations would be of
any interest or not.

I would need to go away and do the necessary work but I'm happy to do
that if you and Gordon feel it is the kind of thing appropriate for
Sparkle Radio.

The next issue would then be how best to do any such recording and upon
what equipment to give good quality results from an audio perspective.

I won't be offended should you think this is not what you want.

Best wishes,

RE: Sparkle Radio

2013-01-15 Thread Roger Firman
Gordon,

Further to your message regarding Sparkle Radio, I have just spent some
time reading the website and trying a few things out so hope what
follows may be of assistance noting the early stages of development.

I was unable to get the broadcasters link to work.

Could I suggest that someone goes through the written text as I came
across words with missing letters.

The Request function seemed to work for me using JAWS. Being unsure
exactly how it is meant to work it is not easy to helpfully comment as
to its functionality. I just wondered if the description could be
expanded so one knows what might/could/should happen.

I typed a name into the edit box, pressed enter and this brought around
four items to a list. I then pressed the enter-key on the one I had
typed in and received a message that it had been successful.

Regards,

Roger.

Dear Lynne,

Further to your message, you ask a number of relevant questions about
weatherstations and I may be able to contribute something as I have one
myself.

It very much depends what you wish to do and achieve with any such
system. Money, of course, is a factor.

I can only write about the system I have which is a Davis Vantage pro
plus. It enables me to obtain accurate recordings, keep the information
on my local PC,

You can obtain software to work both on Mac and PC.

The information can be streamed wirelessly from the weatherstation to
you computer.

As I'm unsure exactly what you might like to know, let me know and I
will try and answer your questions or point you in the right direction.

Roger.

Hi all

As Lynne mentioned earlier in the week, we are now working hard on a
Sparkle Radio solution which is intended to be a Fun for all project
for visually impaired people particularly, but that doesn't mean you
have to have a sight impairment to join in the fun. But what's more, we
are not restricting the activities of Sparkle Radio to music only. We
are more than happy to broadcast other things as well. For instance, if
you wish to provide audio reviews and demos, anything like that, we are
more than happy to give you air time. We really want this thing to work
and we are doing our very best to make it happen. We are preparing a
website with broadcaster tutorials and, to simplify things, we ar also
making available the free broadcaster tools for Mac and PC which we
think might help. All of the downloads will be together in the one
place so there's no need to go hunting for them.

If you're interested, would you please let us know off list. Also, if
you wouldn't mind spreading the word, we'd be grateful.

Now, I want to squash one accusation which was made yesterday in a
private message to Lynne. This project is absolutely not aimed at
generating any form of income for us. We are doing it purely for fun.
There is absolutely no financial gain by us. In fact, we have invested
quite heavily in the project. You need much more than a DSL Internet
tariff to sustain multiple listeners. Our server can cope with up to
500 listeners at a time and we plan to upgrade that soon so that we can
handle up to 1000 listeners. The cloud will be used to broadcast
pre-programmed material when there is no presenter broadcasting live.
So we are aiming to make this a full blown 24/7/365 project in the very
near future. We will probably arrange it so that any articles we
receive are broadcast either in a playlist or randomly. But again, I
stress that there is absolutely no financial motivation here, more will
we be asking for any financial contribution of any kind.

Again, if you're interested in having a bit of fun and sharing your
work, we welcome your input very much. You know where to reach us:
supp...@mac-access.net or supp...@techno-chat.net will find us. We will
soon be implementing mail services for the Sparkle Radio project and
anybody is welcome to an E-Mail account under that domain if they wish.

Gordon,

I don't recall the exact details of which screenreaders you have or
decided not to use. I am just wondering if JAWS would work exactly the
same or not?

Hi Gordon,

If it would be any help, I would be more than happy to try the product
with JAWS if there is a demo version or something you could send to me,
FTP if necessary?

RE: Easy CD-DA Extractor 16

2012-11-20 Thread Roger Firman
Hi Gordon,

I've just been having a further look at the program.

On my computer, it sets itself up with three options if I look at the
menu where all the programs, or most programs are listed i.e. windows
start-key and pressing the letter p for the programs.

If I press enter on the various options and then explore the context
menu, I can find out an amount of information but I'm not sure how much
it isn't telling me. Tabbing around the various areas does reveal at
least something!

Roger.

RE: firefox being strange with jaws 13?

2012-08-09 Thread Roger Firman
Dear Hank,

I have just tried a few websites and they seemed all right.

I did encounter a problem when an application on my PC needed to run at
the same time, it did cause the navigation and speech to behave a little
strangely.

Could you send me the URL of a specific website where you have had
difficulties and I will have a try on that site.

As far as I know, I have the latest version of Firefox, some updates
took effect this morning.

Regards,

Roger.

RE: Notifications In Internet Explorer on Secure Web Pages

2012-05-16 Thread Roger Firman
Dear Dane,

I can't pretend to have done what follows but hope the information will
prove of use.

There will probably be differences should you be using Internet Explorer
9 and also differences with which specific version of Windows you have.

1. In Internet Explorer, go to Tools and Internet Options.
Alternative: Control Panel, Network and Internet Connections (Windows
XP) or Network and Internet (Windows Vista and Windows 7), Internet
Options.

2. Go to Security tab.

3. Select Internet zone (if it's not been selected by default).

4. Locate Custom level button under Security level for this zone
section.

5. Under Miscellaneous branch, locate Display mixed content setting,
and locate the radio button of Enabled.

6. Enter Yes when asked to confirm to change the settings for this zone.

7. Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.

or:

1. From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.

2. Select the Security tab, and then click the Trusted sites icon.

3. Click Sites.

4. Add the domains for those sites containing unencrypted or non-secure
content.

5. When you are finished adding domains, click Close.

6. To have this list of trusted domains accept mixed (both secure and
non-secure) content:

a. From the Security tab, click Custom Level.

b. In the Miscellaneous section, under Display mixed content, select
Enable.

c. Click OK.

Regards,

Roger.

looked as if the Brailliant was supported from version 10. Is this for

RE: JFW

2011-12-30 Thread Roger Firman
Hello Lynne,

As I understand it, the Humanware Brailliant BI 40 cell braille display
will work with JAWS version 10 and above. I'm not sure if that is the
display Gordon has or not?

Other things with JAWS:

Depending upon which version, to get it going after initially either
putting the CD in, or running a downloaded file, it might need a hand to
get going, but it might not.

Reading can be done with cursor-keys and the tab-key. Additionally,
using the keys on a desktop keypad, lower-left and top-right should say
JAWS to pc. Key next down from top right will then say PC. Top right
alone will say JAWS.

From the JAWS menu, ensure JAWS is set to start automatically when
booting up the computer, unless for any reason you don't want this to
happen.
From the desktop with JAWS highlighted, pressing the alt-key and
enter-key enable the user to set a key-combination if JAWS has been
unloaded but the PC is still running.

Although brief, I hope the above may be of some help.

Roger.

RE: Adobe DreamWeaver CS5.5

2011-12-29 Thread Roger Firman
Dear Lynne,

Yes it is me who has purchased a copy.

I certainly wouldn't claim to have any degree of expertise at this
moment in time as this programme looks to be quite complex but offers
plenty of options. Currently I am trying to learn something about how it
all works which I hope will then give me a better idea of just how much
I am able to achieve.

I wonder if you might consider the option of downloading a trial version
of JFW to see if it offers anything in advance to WI?

Sorry not to have more personal experience of this software at the time
of writing.

Regards,

Roger.

RE: USB To Parallel Cable Still Not Working

2011-12-29 Thread Roger Firman
Hello Lynne,

Just a couple of further thoughts.

Are you able to assign the USB 001 virtual printer port or not?

I have heard that parallel printers can be made to work by unchecking
the bidirectional tab.

Is the software already on the PC to which you want to run the
parallel/USB device, just wondering about the driver.

Regards,

Roger.

RE: USB To Parallel Cable Still Not Working

2011-12-29 Thread Roger Firman
Hello Lynne,

I gather that USB to Parallel cables can be a pain to install, but that
the one from Maplin (£14.99 or £25.99) works. such devices do NOT
install a parallel port as such, it will connect itself to a USB Port.

Am I correct in thinking you want to use the Duxbury Braille Translator,
I don't know if the version-number is significant but you probably have
a reasonably current one? Also, I was also wondering which embosser you
have?

Regards,

Roger.
